Photon anti-bunching, measured via the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss experiment, is one of the key signatures of quantum light and is tied to sub-Poissonian photon number statistics. Recently, it has been reported that photon anti-bunching or conditional sub-Poissonian photon number statistics can be obtained via second-order interference of mutually incoherent weak lasers and heralding based on photon counting. Here, we report theoretical analysis on the limits of manipulating conditional photon statistics via interference of weak lasers. It is shown that conditional photon number statistics can become super-Poissonian in such a scheme. We, however, demonstrate explicitly that it cannot become sub-Poissonian, i.e., photon anti-bunching cannot be obtained in such a scheme. We point out that incorrect results can be obtained if one does not properly account for seemingly negligible higher-order photon number expansions of the coherent state.
On-chip integrated photonic circuits are crucial to further progress towards quantum technologies and in the science of quantum optics. Here we report precise control of single photon states and multi-photon entanglement directly on-chip. We manipulate the state of path-encoded qubits using integrated optical phase control based on resistive elements, observing an interference contrast of 98.2+/-0.3%. We demonstrate integrated quantum metrology by observing interference fringes with 2- and 4-photon entangled states generated in a waveguide circuit, with respective interference contrasts of 97.…
Constructing a universal operation scheme for Majorana qubits remains a central issue for the topological quantum computation. We study the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference in a Majorana qubit and show that this interference can be used to achieve controllable operations. The Majorana qubit consists of an rf SQUID with a topological nanowire Josephson junction which hosts Majorana bound states. In the SQUID, a magnetic flux pulse can drive the quantum evolution of the Majorana qubit. The qubit experiences two Landau-Zener transitions when the amplitude of the pulse is tuned around the sup…
Based on the exact conditional quantum dynamics for a two-ion system, we propose an efficient {\it single-step} scheme for coherently manipulating quantum information of two trapped cold ions by using a pair of synchronous laser pulses. Neither the auxiliary atomic level nor the Lamb-Dicke approximation are needed.
In this paper, we describe how to realize conditional frequency entanglement swapping and to produce probabilisticly a three-photon frequency entangled state from two pairs of frequency entangled states by using an Acoustic-Optical-Modulator. Both schemes are very simple and may be implementable in practice.
Radio-frequency phase modulation of frequency entangled photons leads to a two-photon interference pattern in the frequency domain. In recent experiments, the pattern was measured with narrow-band frequency filters which select photons belonging to a given frequency bin. Here we show how photons can be grouped into even and odd frequencies by using periodic frequency filters called interleavers. In our theoretical analysis we show how this reduces the high-dimensional photon state to an effective two-dimensional state. This is of interest for applications such as quantum cryptography or low-di…
Several sequential operations are usually needed for implementing controlled quantum gates and generating entanglement between a pair of quantum bits. Based on the conditional quantum dynamics for a two-ion system beyond the Lamb-Dicke limit, here we propose a theoretical scheme for manipulating two-qubit quantum information, i.e., implementing a universal two-qubit quantum gate and generating a two-qubit entangled state, by using a pair of simultaneous laser pulses. Neither the Lamb-Dicke approximation nor the auxiliary atomic level are required. The experimental realizability of this simple …
We consider multimode two-photon interference at a beam splitter by photons created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The resulting interference pattern is shown to depend upon the transverse spatial symmetry of the pump beam. In an experiment, we employ the first-order Hermite-Gaussian modes in order to show that, by manipulating the pump beam, one can control the resulting two-photon interference behavior. We expect these results to play an important role in the engineering of quantum states of light for use in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.
We elucidate generally the interference of independent Bose fields in view of the conditional probability for the particle number measurements, and clarify its relation to the source number statistics. Despite lack of intrinsic phases, the interference phase can be inferred from the particle number registered at one detector by using the classical mean fields. If the conditional number distributions for the other detectors, given the outcome of the first detector, exhibit sufficiently narrow peaks around the values specified by the estimated phases, the mean field description is valid in a sin…
We have developed a theory of three-pulse coherent control of photochemical processes. It is based on adiabatic passage and quantum coherence and interference attributed to the lower-lying dissociation continuum and excited upper discrete states, which are otherwise not connected to the ground state by one-photon transitions. Novel opportunities offered by the proposed scheme are demonstrated through extensive numerical simulations with the aid of a model relevant to typical experiments. The opportunities for manipulating the distribution of the population among discrete and continuous states …
Most quantum logics do not allow for a reasonable calculus of conditional probability. However, those ones which do so provide a very general and rich mathematical structure, including classical probabilities, quantum mechanics as well as Jordan algebras. This structure exhibits some similarities with Alfsen and Shultz's non-commutative spectral theory, but these two mathematical approaches are not identical. Barnum, Emerson and Ududec adapted the concept of higher-order interference, introduced by Sorkin in 1994, into a general probabilistic framework. Their adaption is used here to reveal a …
Biphotons of narrow bandwidth and long temporal length play a crucial role in long-distance quantum communication (LDQC) and linear optical quantum computing (LOQC). However, generation of these photons usually requires atomic ensembles with high optical depth or spontaneous parametric down-conversion with sophisticated optical cavity. By manipulating the two-component biphoton wavefunction generated from a low-optical-depth (low-OD) atomic ensemble, we demonstrate biphotons with subnatural linewidth in the sub-MHz regime. The potential of shaping and manipulating the quantum wavepackets of th…
Optical signals obtained by the material response to classical laser fields are given by nonlinear response functions which can be expressed by sums over various quantum pathways of matter. We show that some pathways can be selected by using nonclassical fields, through the entanglement of photon and material pathways, which results in a different-power law dependence on the incoming field intensity. Spectrally overlapping stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and two-photon-absorption (TPA) pathways in a pump probe experiment are separated by controlling the degree of entanglement of pairs of inc…
We present an experimental realization of a two-photon conditional-phase switch, related to the ``$c$-$ϕ$'' gate of quantum computation. This gate relies on quantum interference between photon pairs, generating entanglement between two optical modes through the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). The interference effect serves to enhance the effective nonlinearity by many orders of magnitude, so it is significant at the quantum (single-photon) level. By adjusting the relative optical phase between the classical pump for SPDC and the pair of input modes, one can impress a …
Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect was long believed to be a two-photon interference phenomenon. It describes the fact that two indistinguishable photons mixed at a beam splitter will bunch together to one of the two output modes. Considering the two single-photon emitters such as trapped ions, we explore a hidden scenario of the HOM effect, where entanglement can be generated between the two ions when a single photon is detected by one of the detectors. A second photon emitted by the entangled photon sources will be subsequently detected by the same detector. However, we can also control the fate of…
We introduce the concept of hypergraphs to describe quantum optical experiments with probabilistic multi-photon sources. Every hyperedge represents a correlated photon source, and every vertex stands for an optical output path. Such general graph description provides new insights for producing complex high-dimensional multi-photon quantum entangled states, which go beyond limitations imposed by pair creation via spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Furthermore, properties of hypergraphs can be investigated experimentally. For example, the NP-Complete problem of deciding whether a hypergraph…
Cat states, with their unique phase-space interference properties, are ideal candidates for understanding fundamental principles of quantum mechanics and performing key quantum information processing tasks. However, they are highly susceptible to photon loss, which inevitably diminishes their quantum non-Gaussian features. Here, we protect these non-Gaussian features against photon loss by compressing the phase-space distribution of a cat state. We achieve this compression with a deterministic technique based on the echo conditional displacement operation in a circuit QED device. We present a …
Conditional interference patterns can be obtained with twin photons from spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the phase of the pattern can be controlled by the relative transverse position of the signal and idler detectors. Using a configuration that produces entangled photons in both polarization and transverse momentum we report on the control of the conditional patterns by acting on the polarization degree of freedom.
Based on heralded interference on a six-port Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we propose protocols to generate a series of multiphoton states in primary output port, by injecting a coherent state in primary input port and two Fock states in two ancillary input ports, and measuring two Fock states in two ancillary output ports. Only manipulating at the single-photon level (i.e, |0> or |1>) in all ancillary ports, we generate sixteen types (six categories) of multiphoton nonclassical states, whose state vectors are unified as superposition of a new coherent state, a single-photon added coherent stat…

A fundamental prerequisite for the implementation of linear optical quantum computation is a source of single-photon wavepackets capable of high-visibility interference in scalable networks. These conditions can be met with micro-structured waveguides in conjunction with ultra-short classical timing pulses. By exploiting a novel type-II phasematching configuration we demonstrate a waveguided single photon source exhibiting a conditional detection efficiency exceeding 51% (which corresponds to a preparation efficiency of 85%) and extraordinarily high detection rates of up to 8.5x10^5 coincidenc…
Differing from the traditional method of achieving subwavelength interference, we have demonstrated the two-photon subwavelength interference effect of broadband chaotic light in a polarization-selective Michelson interferometer with an ultrafast two-photon absorption detector the first time, which is achieved by manipulating two-photon probability amplitudes involved in the interference. In theory, the two-photon polarization coherence matrix and probability amplitudes matrix are combined to develop polarized two-photon interference terms, which explains the experimental results well. In orde…
Quality of individual photons and their ability to interfere is traditionally tested by measuring the Hong-Ou-Mandel photon bunching effect. However, this phase insensitive measurement only tests the particle aspect of the quantum interference. Motivated by these limitations, we formulate a witness capable of recognizing both the quality and the coherence of two photons from a single set of measurements. We exploit the conditional nonclassical squeezing which is sensitive to both the quality of the single photons and their indistinguishability and we show that it can be used to irectly reveal …
Cavity polaritonics is capturing the imagination of the chemistry community because of the novel opportunities it creates to direct chemistry. Electron transfer (ET) reactions are among the simplest reactions, and they also underpin bioenergetics. As such, new conceptual strategies to manipulate and direct electron flow at the nanoscale are of wide-ranging interest in biochemistry, energy science, bio-inspired materials science, and chemistry. We show that optical cavities can modulate electron transfer pathway interferences and ET rates in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems. We derive the ra…
With propagating through a dispersive medium, the temporal-spectral profile of laser pulses should be inevitably modified. Although such dispersion effect has been well studied in classical optics, its effect on a single-photon wave-packet, i.e., the matter wave of a single-photon, has not yet been entirely revealed. In this paper, we investigate the effect of dispersion on indistinguishability of single-photon wave-packets through the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. By dispersively manipulating two indistinguishable single-photon wave-packets before interfering with each other, we observe …
We study the collective spontaneous emission of three identical two-level atoms initially prepared in the excited states by measuring Glauber's third-order photon correlation function. Assuming two atoms at sub-wavelength distance from each other such that they are subject to the dipole-dipole interaction while the third one is located several wavelengths away, we observe super- and subradiant decay alike, depending on the direction of observation. Unlike the case where no remote atom is introduced or no conditional measurements are performed, the spontaneous emission behavior of the condition…
Coherent optical states consist of a quantum superposition of different photon number (Fock) states, but because they do not form an orthogonal basis, no photon number states can be obtained from it by linear optics. Here we demonstrate the reverse, by manipulating a random continuous single-photon stream using quantum interference in an optical Sagnac loop, we create engineered quantum states of light with tunable photon statistics, including approximate weak coherent states. We demonstrate this experimentally using a true single-photon stream produced by a semiconductor quantum dot in an opt…
In classical physics the joint probability of a number of individually rare independent events is given by the Poisson distribution. It describes, for example, unidirectional transfer of population between the densely and sparsely populated states of a classical two-state system. We derive a quantum version of the law for a large number of non-interacting systems (particles) obeying Bose-Einstein statistics. The classical low is significantly modified by quantum interference, which allows, among other effects, for the counter flow of particles back into the densely populated state. Suggested o…
We develop a technique for generating multi-photon nonclassical states via interference between coherent and Fock states using quantum catalysis. By modulating the coherent field strength, the number of catalyst photons and the ratio of the beam splitter upon which they interfere, a wide range of nonclassical phenomena can be created, including squeezing of up to 1.25 dB, anti- and super-bunched photon statistics and states exhibiting over 90% fidelity to displaced coherent superposition states. We perform quantum catalysis experimentally, showing tunability into the nonclassical regime. Our p…
By engineering and manipulating quantum entanglement between incoming photons and experimental apparatus, we construct single-photon detectors which cannot distinguish between photons of very different wavelengths. These color erasure detectors enable a new kind of intensity interferometry, with potential applications in microscopy and astronomy. We demonstrate chromatic interferometry experimentally, observing robust interference using both coherent and incoherent photon sources.
Quantum interference and quantum correlation, as two main features of quantum optics, play an essential role in quantum information applications, such as multi-particle quantum walk and boson sampling. While many experimental demonstrations have been done in one-dimensional waveguide arrays, it remains unexplored in higher dimensions due to tight requirement of manipulating and detecting photons in large-scale. Here, we experimentally observe non-classical correlation of two identical photons in a fully coupled two-dimensional structure, i.e. photonic lattice manufactured by three-dimensional …
