We demonstrate the existence of large phononic band gaps in designed hyperuniform (isotropic) disordered two-dimensional (2D) phononic structures of Pb cylinders in epoxy matrix. The phononic band gaps in hyperuniform disordered phononic structures are comparable to band gaps of similar periodic structures, for both out-of-plane and in-plane polarizations. A large number of localized modes is identified near the band edges, as well as, diffusive transmission throughout the rest of the frequency spectrum. Very high-Q cavity modes for both out-of-plane and in-plane polarizations are formed by selectively removing a single cylinder out of the structure. Efficient waveguiding with almost 100% transmission trough waveguide structures with arbitrary bends is also presented. We expand our results to thin three-dimensional layers of such structures and demonstrate effective band gaps related to the respective 2D band gaps. Moreover, the drop in the Q factor for the three-dimensional structures is not more than three orders of magnitude compared to the 2D ones.
We introduce the first designs for high-Q photonic cavities in slab architectures in hyperuniform disordered solids displaying isotropic band gaps. Despite their disordered character, hyperuniform disordered structures have the ability to tightly confine the TE-polarised radiation in slab configurations that are readily fabricable. The architectures are based on carefully designed local modifications of otherwise unperturbed hyperuniform dielectric structures. We identify a wide range of confined cavity modes, which can be classified according to their approximate symmetry (monopole, dipole, q…
We present wave transport experiments in hyperuniform disordered arrays of cylinders with high dielectric permittivity. Using microwaves, we show that the same material can display transparency, photon diffusion, Anderson localization, or a full band gap, depending on the frequency $ν$ of the electromagnetic wave. Interestingly, we find a second weaker band gap, which appears to be related to the second peak of the structure factor. Our results emphasize the importance of spatial correlations on different length scales for the formation of photonic band gaps.
In this work we present a study on the characterization of ordered and disordered hyperuniform point distributions on spherical surfaces. In spite of the extensive literature on disordered hyperuniform systems in Euclidean geometries, to date few works have dealt with the problem of hyperuniformity in curved spaces. As a matter of fact, some systems that display disordered hyperuniformity, like the space distribution of photoreceptors in avian retina, actually occur on curved surfaces. Here we will focus on the local particle number variance and its dependence on the size of the sampling windo…
Disordered and hyperuniform structures of densely packed spheres near and at jamming are characterized by vanishing of long-wavelength density fluctuations, or equivalently by long-range power-law decay of the direct correlation function (DCF). We focus on previous simulation results that exhibit degradation of hyperuniformity in jammed structures while maintaining the long-range nature of the DCF to a certain length scale. Here we demonstrate that a field-theoretic formulation of the stochastic density functional theory is relevant to explore the degradation mechanism. The strong-coupling exp…
Hyperuniform disordered photonic materials have recently been shown to display large, complete photonic band gaps and isotropic optical properties, and are emerging as strong candidates for a plethora of optoelectronic applications, making them competitive with many of their periodic and quasiperiodic counterparts. In this work, high quality factor optical cavities in hyperuniform disordered architectures are fabricated through semiconductor slabs and experimentally addressed by scanning near-field optical microscopy. The wide range of confined cavity modes that we detect arise from carefully …
Disordered hyperuniformity (DHU) is a recently proposed new state of matter, which has been observed in a variety of classical and quantum many-body systems. DHU systems are characterized by vanishing infinite-wavelength density fluctuations and are endowed with unique novel physical properties. Here we report the first discovery of disordered hyperuniformity in atomic-scale 2D materials, i.e., amorphous silica composed of a single layer of atoms, based on spectral-density analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscope images. Subsequent simulations suggest that the observed DHU …
The hyperuniformity concept provides a unified means to classify all perfect crystals, perfect quasicrystals, and exotic amorphous states of matter according to their capacity to suppress large-scale density fluctuations. While the classification of hyperuniform point configurations has received considerable attention, much less is known about the classification of hyperuniform heterogeneous two-phase media, which include composites, porous media, foams, cellular solids, colloidal suspensions and polymer blends. The purpose of this article is to begin such a program for certain two-dimensional…
Carbon nanotubes are quasi-one-dimensional systems that possess superior transport, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties. In this work, we generalize the notion of disorder hyperuniformity, a recently discovered exotic state of matter with hidden long-range order, to quasi-one-dimensional materials. As a proof of concept, we then apply the generalized framework to quantify the density fluctuations in amorphous carbon nanotubes containing randomly distributed Stone-Wales defects. We demonstrate that all of these amorphous nanotubes are hyperuniform, i.e., the infinite-wavelength density…
The purpose of this work is to understand the fundamental connection between structural correlations and light localization in three-dimensional (3D) open scattering systems of finite size. We numerically investigate the transport of vector electromagnetic waves scattered by resonant electric dipoles spatially arranged in 3D space by stealthy hyperuniform disordered point patterns. Three-dimensional stealthy hyperuniform disordered systems (3D-SHDS) are engineered with different structural correlation properties determined by their degree of stealthiness $χ$. Such fine control of exotic states…
Disordered hyperuniform systems are exotic states of matter that completely suppress large-scale density fluctuations like crystals, and yet possess no Bragg peaks similar to liquids or glasses. Such systems have been discovered in a variety of equilibrium and non-equilibrium physical and biological systems, and are often endowed with novel physical properties. The mechanisms associated with the emergence of disordered hyperuniformity in nonequilibrium systems, in particular inherent structures are often not well understood, which we will address from a topological perspective in this work. Sp…
Hyperuniform disordered photonic materials (HDPM) are spatially correlated dielectric structures with unconventional optical properties. They can be transparent to long-wavelength radiation while at the same time have isotropic band gaps in another frequency range. This phenomenon raises fundamental questions concerning photon transport through disordered media. While optical transparency is robust against recurrent multiple scattering, little is known about other transport regimes like diffusive multiple scattering or Anderson localization. Here we investigate band gaps, and we report Anderso…

A new formalism using the ideas of the augmented space recursion (introduced by one of us) has been proposed to study the ground state properties of ordered and disordered one-dimensional Holstein model. For ordered case our method works equally well in all parametric regime and matches with the existing exact diagonalization and DMRG results. On the other hand the quenched substitutionally disordered model works in low and intermediate regime of electron phonon coupling. Effect of phononic and substitutional disorder are treated on equal footing.
The design and fabrication of phononic crystals (PnCs) hold the key to control the propagation of heat and sound at the nanoscale. However, there is a lack of experimental studies addressing the impact of order/disorder on the phononic properties of PnCs. Here, we present a comparative investigation of the influence of disorder on the hypersonic and thermal properties of two-dimensional PnCs. PnCs of ordered and disordered lattices are fabricated of circular holes with equal filling fractions in free-standing Si membranes. Ultrafast pump and probe spectroscopy (asynchronous optical sampling) a…
Structural correlations have a significant effect on light propagation in disordered media. We numerically investigate the role of short-range order in light absorption in thin films with disordered nanoholes. Two types of disordered distributions, including stealthy hyperuniform (SHU) and hard disk (HD) patterns with different degrees of short-range order, are studied. We find that Bragg scattering induced by short-range order results in the appearance of a gradually sharper absorption peak with the increasing of degrees of short-range order ($χ$, $ϕ$). A physical model is proposed to calcula…
