Spin and charge fluctuations at vicinity of metal-to-Mott insulator transitions are studied in an organic solid with molecular dimers. The extended Hubbard model taking account of the internal electronic degree of freedom in a molecular dimer is analyzed using the variational Monte Carlo method. Three kinds of the electronic phases, i.e. a metallic phase, an antiferromagnetic insulating phase and a polar charge ordered phase, compete with each other in the ground state. It is found that the polar-charge fluctuation is dominant in a wide range of the molecular dimerization and Coulomb interaction amplitudes, and is enhanced remarkably near the metal-insulator phase boundary, in which the spin fluctuation is almost unchanged. Implication for the $κ$-type BEDT-TTF salts is discussed.
"Nonmagnetic" Dimer Mott insulator induced by the coupling of spin with quantum electric dipoles
Anomalous dielectric response in the dimer Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$
The organic charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Hg(SCN)$_{2}$Br is a quasi two-dimensional metal with a half-filled conduction band at ambient conditions. When cooled below $T=80$ K it undergoes a pronounced transition to an insulating phase where the resistivity increases many orders of magnitude. In order to elucidate the nature of this metal-insulator transition we have performed comprehensive transport, dielectric and optical investigations. The findings are compared with other dimerized $κ$-(BEDT-TTF) salts, in particular the Cl-analogue, where a charge-order transition takes place a…
We present an example for the phase transition between a topological non-trivial solid phase and a trivial solid phase in the quantum dimer model(QDM) on triangular lattice. Such a transition is beyond the Landau's paradigm of phase transition. We have characterized such a transition with the topological entanglement entropy(TEE) of the system, which is found to change from $γ=\ln 2$ in the topological solid phase to zero in the trivial solid phase, through a pronounced peak around the transition point. We also calculated the correlation function of the vison excitation in the QDM and find tha…
We report on our investigation of the electronic structure of Ti$_2$O$_3$ using (hard) x-ray photoelectron and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. From the distinct satellite structures in the spectra we have been able to establish unambiguously that the Ti-Ti $c$-axis dimer in the corundum crystal structure is electronically present and forms an $a_{1g}a_{1g}$ molecular singlet in the low temperature insulating phase. Upon heating we observed a considerable spectral weight transfer to lower energies with orbital reconstruction. The insulator-metal transition may be viewed as a transition from…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl reveal a phonon anomaly in a wide temperature range. Starting from $T_{\rm ins}\sim50$-$60$ K where the charge gap opens, the low-lying optical phonon modes become overdamped upon cooling towards the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N} = 27$ K, where also a ferroelectric ordering at $T_{\rm FE} \approx T_{\rm N}$ occurs. Conversely, the phonon damping becomes small again when spins and charges are ordered below $T_\mathrm{N}$, while no change of the lattice sym…
The dimerized Kane-Mele model with/without the strong interaction is studied using analytical methods. The boundary of the topological phase transition of the model without strong interaction is obtained. Our results show that the occurrence of the transition only depends on dimerized parameter . From the one-particle spectrum, we obtain the completed phase diagram including the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state and the topologically trivial insulator. Then, using different mean-field methods, we investigate the Mott transition and the magnetic transition of the strongly correlated dimerized Kane-…
Triangular lattice quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulators based on BEDT-TTF molecule and its analogies present a possibility to produce exotic phases by coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom. In this work we discuss magnetic properties of one of such materials, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl, which is found at the border of the phase transition between a Mott insulator into a charge ordered state. Our magnetic susceptibility and cantilever magnetisation measurements demonstrate how the charge degree of freedom defines magnetic properties for few different charge phases observed in this m…
We consider the dimer Hubbard model within Dynamical Mean Field Theory to study the interplay and competition between Mott and Peierls physics. We describe the various metal-insulator transition lines of the phase diagram and the break down of the different solutions that occur along them. We focus on the specific issue of the debated Mott-Peierls insulator crossover and describe the systematic evolution of the electronic structure across the phase diagram. We found that at low intra-dimer hopping the emerging local magnetic moments can unbind above a characteristic singlet temperature $T^*$. …
$^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed for a single-component molecular material Zn(tmdt)$_{2}$, in which tmdt's form an arrangement similar to the so-called $κ$-type molecular packing in quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulators and superconductors. Detailed analysis of the powder spectra uncovered local spin susceptibility in the tmdt $π$ orbitals. The obtained shift and relaxation rate revealed the singlet-triplet excitations of the $π$ spins, indicating that Zn(tmdt)$_{2}$ is a spin-gapped Mott insulator with exceptionally large electron correlations compared to conven…
Motivated by the magnetic properties of the spin-chain compounds LiCuSbO$_4$$\equiv$LiSbCuO$_4$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, we study the ground state of the Heisenberg chain with dimerized nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic (FM)($J_1, J_1^\prime<0$) and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2>0$) couplings. Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique and spin-wave theory we find a first-order transition between a fully-polarized FM and an incommensurate spiral state at $2α=β/(1+β)$, where $α$ is the frustration ratio $J_2/|J_1|$ and $β$ the degree of dimerization $J_1^\prime…
Dimerized valence bond solids appear naturally in spin-1/2 systems on bipartite lattices, with the geometric frustrations playing a key role both in their stability and the eventual `melting' due to quantum fluctuations. Here, we ask the question of the stability of such dimerized solids in spin-1 systems, taking the anisotropic square lattice with bilinear and biquadratic spin-spin interactions as a paradigmatic model. The lattice can be viewed as a set of coupled spin-1 chains, which in the limit of vanishing inter-chain coupling are known to possess a stable dimer phase. We study this model…
We present a theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of rutile (metallic) and M$_1$ and M$_2$ monoclinic (insulating) phases of VO$_2$ employing a fully self-consistent combination of density functional theory and embedded dynamical mean field theory calculations. We describe the electronic structure of the metallic and both insulating phases of VO$_2$, and propose a distinct mechanism for the gap opening. We show that Mott physics plays an essential role in all phases of VO$_2$: undimerized vanadium atoms undergo classical Mott transition through local moment formation (in the M…
Metal-insulator (MI) transitions in correlated electron systems have long been a central and controversial issue in material science. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits a first-order MI transition at 340 K. For more than half a century, it has been debated whether electronic correlation or the structural instability due to dimerised V ions is the more essential driving force behind this MI transition. Here, we show that an ultrahigh magnetic field of 500 T renders the insulator phase of tungsten (W)-doped VO2 metallic. The spin Zeeman effect on the d electrons of the V ions dissociates the dimers…
$Li_{2}RuO_{3}$ with a honeycomb structure undergoes a drastic transition from a regular honeycomb lattice with the $C2/m$ space group to a valence bond solid state of the $P2_{1}/m$ space group with an extremely strong dimerization at 550 K. We synthesized $Li_{2}Ru_{1-x}Mn_{x}O_{3}$ with a full solid solution and investigated doping effects on the valence bond solid state as a function of Mn content. The valence bond solid state is found to be stable up to $x = 0.2$, based on our extensive experiments: structural studies, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility. On the other hand, the exten…
We calculate the bipartite von Neumann and second Rényi entanglement entropies of the ground states of spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice. Two distinct dimerization patterns are considered: columnar and staggered. In both cases, we concentrate on the valence bond solid (VBS) phase and describe such a phase with the bond-operator representation. Within this formalism, the original spin Hamiltonian is mapped into an effective interacting boson model for the triplet excitations. We study the effective Hamiltonian at the harmonic approximation and determine the spec…
We use a strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) method and ground-state quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations to study S=1/2 spin chains with random couplings, calculating disorder-averaged spin and dimer correlations. The QMC simulations demonstrate logarithmic corrections to the power-law decaying correlations obtained with the SDRG scheme. The same asymptotic forms apply both for systems with standard Heisenberg exchange and for certain multi-spin couplings leading to spontaneous dimerization in the clean system. We show that the logarithmic corrections arise in the valence-bond (sing…
The development of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in dilute magnetic topological insulators can induce dissipationless electronic surface transport via the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We measure the magnetic excitations in a prototypical magnetic topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te, using inelastic neutron scattering. Neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that our Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te sample has no FM long-range order above a temperature of 2 K. However, we observe slow, collective FM fluctuations ($<$~70 $μ$eV), indicating proximity to FM orde…
We study the single-orbital Hubbard model on the half-filled decorated honeycomb lattice. In the non-interacting theory at half-filling the Fermi energy lies within a flat band where strong correlations are enhanced. The lattice is highly frustrated. We find a correlation driven first-order metal-insulator transition to two different insulating ground states - a dimer valence bond solid Mott insulator when inter-triangle correlations dominate, and a broken $\mathcal{C}_3$-symmetry antiferromagnet that arises from frustration when intra-triangle correlations dominate. The metal-insulator transi…
The Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ forms a highly-frustrated triangular lattice of $S=1/2$ dimers with a possible quantum-spin-liquid state. Our experimental and numerical studies reveal the emergence of a slight charge imbalance between crystallographically inequivalent sites, relaxor dielectric response and hopping dc transport. In a broader perspective we conclude that the universal properties of strongly-correlated charge-transfer salts with spin liquid state are an anion-supported valence band and cyanide-induced quasi-degenerate electronic configurations in the relaxed s…
Accurate and predictive computations of the quantum-mechanical behavior of many interacting electrons in realistic atomic environments are critical for the theoretical design of materials with desired properties, and require solving the grand-challenge problem of the many-electron Schrodinger equation. An infinite chain of equispaced hydrogen atoms is perhaps the simplest realistic model for a bulk material, embodying several central themes of modern condensed matter physics and chemistry, while retaining a connection to the paradigmatic Hubbard model. Here we report a combined application of …
The honeycomb-lattice ruthenate Li$_2$RuO$_3$ is made heavily Li-deficient by chemical oxidation by iodine. The delithiation triggers a different phase Li$_{2-x}$RuO$_3$, the "D-phase", with superlattice. For the first time we disclose the magnetic and structural properties of the D-phase in the dimer-solid state. The low temperature magnetic susceptibility and the bond lengths indicate a bonding configuration consisting of both Ru$^{4+}$-Ru$^{4+}$ and Ru$^{5+}$-Ru$^{5+}$ dimers.
