Recent progress in computer vision has been dominated by deep neural networks trained over large amounts of labeled data. Collecting such datasets is however a tedious, often impossible task; hence a surge in approaches relying solely on synthetic data for their training. For depth images however, discrepancies with real scans still noticeably affect the end performance. We thus propose an end-to-end framework which simulates the whole mechanism of these devices, generating realistic depth data from 3D models by comprehensively modeling vital factors e.g. sensor noise, material reflectance, surface geometry. Not only does our solution cover a wider range of sensors and achieve more realistic results than previous methods, assessed through extended evaluation, but we go further by measuring the impact on the training of neural networks for various recognition tasks; demonstrating how our pipeline seamlessly integrates such architectures and consistently enhances their performance.

While convolutional neural networks are dominating the field of computer vision, one usually does not have access to the large amount of domain-relevant data needed for their training. It thus became common to use available synthetic samples along domain adaptation schemes to prepare algorithms for the target domain. Tackling this problem from a different angle, we introduce a pipeline to map unseen target samples into the synthetic domain used to train task-specific methods. Denoising the data and retaining only the features these recognition algorithms are familiar with, our solution greatly…

In this paper, we propose a machine learning approach to recognise engineering shape features such as holes, slots, etc. in a CAD mesh model. With the advent of digital archiving, newer manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, scanning of components and reverse engineering, CAD data is proliferated in the form of mesh model representation. As the number of nodes and edges become larger in a mesh model as well as the possibility of presence of noise, direct application of graph-based approaches would not only be expensive but also difficult to be tuned for noisy data. Hence, this calls for…

With the increasing availability of large databases of 3D CAD models, depth-based recognition methods can be trained on an uncountable number of synthetically rendered images. However, discrepancies with the real data acquired from various depth sensors still noticeably impede progress. Previous works adopted unsupervised approaches to generate more realistic depth data, but they all require real scans for training, even if unlabeled. This still represents a strong requirement, especially when considering real-life/industrial settings where real training images are hard or impossible to acquir…

In radar activity recognition, 2D signal representations such as spectrogram, cepstrum and cadence velocity diagram are often utilized, while range information is often neglected. In this work, we propose to utilize the 3D time-range-Doppler (TRD) representation, and design a 3D Orthogonally-Projected EfficientNet (3D-OPEN) to effectively capture the discriminant information embedded in the 3D TRD cubes for accurate classification. The proposed model aggregates the discriminant information from three orthogonal planes projected from the 3D feature space. It alleviates the difficulty of 3D CNNs…
Long-tail recognition tackles the natural non-uniformly distributed data in real-world scenarios. While modern classifiers perform well on populated classes, its performance degrades significantly on tail classes. Humans, however, are less affected by this since, when confronted with uncertain examples, they simply opt to provide coarser predictions. Motivated by this, a deep realistic taxonomic classifier (Deep-RTC) is proposed as a new solution to the long-tail problem, combining realism with hierarchical predictions. The model has the option to reject classifying samples at different levels…

We introduce a library of geometric voxel features for CAD surface recognition/retrieval tasks. Our features include local versions of the intrinsic volumes (the usual 3D volume, surface area, integrated mean and Gaussian curvature) and a few closely related quantities. We also compute Haar wavelet and statistical distribution features by aggregating raw voxel features. We apply our features to object classification on the ESB data set and demonstrate accurate results with a small number of shallow decision trees.

Understanding human actions is a crucial problem for service robots. However, the general trend in Action Recognition is developing and testing these systems on structured datasets. That's why this work presents a practical Skeleton-based Action Recognition framework which can be used in realistic scenarios. Our results show that although non-augmented and non-normalized data may yield comparable results on the test split of the dataset, it is far from being useful on another dataset which is a manually collected data.

Despite various methods are proposed to make progress in pedestrian attribute recognition, a crucial problem on existing datasets is often neglected, namely, a large number of identical pedestrian identities in train and test set, which is not consistent with practical application. Thus, images of the same pedestrian identity in train set and test set are extremely similar, leading to overestimated performance of state-of-the-art methods on existing datasets. To address this problem, we propose two realistic datasets PETA\textsubscript{$zs$} and RAPv2\textsubscript{$zs$} following zero-shot se…

3D shape is a crucial but heavily underutilized cue in today's computer vision systems, mostly due to the lack of a good generic shape representation. With the recent availability of inexpensive 2.5D depth sensors (e.g. Microsoft Kinect), it is becoming increasingly important to have a powerful 3D shape representation in the loop. Apart from category recognition, recovering full 3D shapes from view-based 2.5D depth maps is also a critical part of visual understanding. To this end, we propose to represent a geometric 3D shape as a probability distribution of binary variables on a 3D voxel grid,…
Synthetic data has been a critical tool for training scene text detection and recognition models. On the one hand, synthetic word images have proven to be a successful substitute for real images in training scene text recognizers. On the other hand, however, scene text detectors still heavily rely on a large amount of manually annotated real-world images, which are expensive. In this paper, we introduce UnrealText, an efficient image synthesis method that renders realistic images via a 3D graphics engine. 3D synthetic engine provides realistic appearance by rendering scene and text as a whole,…

As deep networks require large amounts of accurately labeled training data, a strategy to collect sufficiently large and accurate annotations is as important as innovations in recognition methods. This is especially true for building Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems for chest X-rays where domain expertise of radiologists is required to annotate the presence and location of abnormalities on X-ray images. However, there lacks concrete evidence that provides guidance on how much resource to allocate for data annotation such that the resulting CAD system reaches desired performance. Without …
Recent work has shown good recognition results in 3D object recognition using 3D convolutional networks. In this paper, we show that the object orientation plays an important role in 3D recognition. More specifically, we argue that objects induce different features in the network under rotation. Thus, we approach the category-level classification task as a multi-task problem, in which the network is trained to predict the pose of the object in addition to the class label as a parallel task. We show that this yields significant improvements in the classification results. We test our suggested a…
Face recognition of realistic visual images has been well studied and made a significant progress in the recent decade. Unlike the realistic visual images, the face recognition of the caricatures is far from the performance of the visual images. This is largely due to the extreme non-rigid distortions of the caricatures introduced by exaggerating the facial features to strengthen the characters. The heterogeneous modalities of the caricatures and the visual images result the caricature-visual face recognition is a cross-modal problem. In this paper, we propose a method to conduct caricature-vi…
Modeling spatial-temporal relations is imperative for recognizing human actions, especially when a human is interacting with objects, while multiple objects appear around the human differently over time. Most existing action recognition models focus on learning overall visual cues of a scene but disregard informative fine-grained features, which can be captured by learning human-object relationships and interactions. In this paper, we learn human-object relationships by exploiting the interaction of their local and global contexts. We hence propose the Global-Local Interaction Distillation Net…

A laser scanner can easily acquire the geometric data of physical environments in the form of a point cloud. Recognizing objects from a point cloud is often required for industrial 3D reconstruction, which should include not only geometry information but also semantic information. However, recognition process is often a bottleneck in 3D reconstruction because it requires expertise on domain knowledge and intensive labor. To address this problem, various methods have been developed to recognize objects by retrieving the corresponding model in the database from an input geometry query. In recent…

We tackle the problem of producing realistic simulations of LiDAR point clouds, the sensor of preference for most self-driving vehicles. We argue that, by leveraging real data, we can simulate the complex world more realistically compared to employing virtual worlds built from CAD/procedural models. Towards this goal, we first build a large catalog of 3D static maps and 3D dynamic objects by driving around several cities with our self-driving fleet. We can then generate scenarios by selecting a scene from our catalog and "virtually" placing the self-driving vehicle (SDV) and a set of dynamic o…

The framework is composed of a global network (GN), a 3D perspective network (3DPN), and a fusion network. The GN is used to locate the region of interest (RoI) and generate the 2D global feature. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using synthetic data to augment face datasets. In particular, we propose a novel generative adversarial network (GAN) that can disentangle identity-related attributes from non-identity-related attributes. This is done by training an embedding network that maps discrete identity labels to an identity latent space that follows a simple prior distribution, and training a GAN conditioned on samples from that distribution. Our proposed GAN allows us to augment face datasets by generating both synthetic images of subjects in the training set and synthe…

We propose to leverage existing large-scale datasets of 3D models to understand the underlying 3D structure of objects seen in an image by constructing a CAD-based representation of the objects and their poses. We present Mask2CAD, which jointly detects objects in real-world images and for each detected object, optimizes for the most similar CAD model and its pose. We construct a joint embedding space between the detected regions of an image corresponding to an object and 3D CAD models,…

In this paper, we tackle the problem of 24 hours-monitoring patient actions in a ward such as "stretching an arm out of the bed", "falling out of the bed", where temporal movements are subtle or significant. In the concerned scenarios, the relations between scene layouts and body kinematics (skeletons) become important cues to recognize actions; however they are hard to be secured at a testing stage. To address this problem, we propose a kinematic-layout-aware random forest which takes into account the kinematic-layout (\ie layout and skeletons), to maximize the discriminative power of depth i…
The COVID-19 pandemic raises the problem of adapting face recognition systems to the new reality, where people may wear surgical masks to cover their noses and mouths. Traditional data sets (e.g., CelebA, CASIA-WebFace) used for training these systems were released before the pandemic, so they now seem unsuited due to the lack of examples of people wearing masks. We propose a method for enhancing data sets containing faces without masks by creating synthetic masks and overlaying them on faces in the original images. Our method relies on SparkAR Studio, a developer program made by Facebook that…
In this work we present a framework for the recognition of natural scene text. Our framework does not require any human-labelled data, and performs word recognition on the whole image holistically, departing from the character based recognition systems of the past. The deep neural network models at the centre of this framework are trained solely on data produced by a synthetic text generation engine -- synthetic data that is highly realistic and sufficient to replace real data, giving us infinite amounts of training data. This excess of data exposes new possibilities for word recognition model…
