Whittaker functions on non-archimedean fields were first introduced in the work of Jacquet, and they were characterized explicitly by Shintani. We obtain an explicit inversion formula and a Plancherel formula for the $p$-adic Whittaker transform on $\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. As an application, integral representations are obtained for the local factors of certain symmetric power $L$-functions.
It is shown that Mellin transforms of p-adic Whittaker functions exist for generic characters. For good choices of vectors they are rational functions. For class one vectors they can be calculated explicitly. It turns out that they are automorphic L-factors times normalization factors.
In this paper we tackle a question raised by N. Templier and A. Saha concerning the size of Whittaker new vectors appearing in infinite dimensional representations of GL(2) over non-archimedean fields. We derive precise bounds for such functions in all possible situations. Our main tool is the p-adic method of stationary phase.
We investigate recursive properties of certain p-adic Whittaker functions (of which representation densities of quadratic forms are special values). The proven relations can be used to compute them explicitly in arbitrary dimensions, provided that enough information about the orbits under the orthogonal group acting on the representations is available. These relations have implications for the first and second special derivatives of the Euler product over all p of these Whittaker functions. These Euler products appear as the main part of the Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series associated…
We define unramified Whittaker functions on the p-adic points of an affine Kac-Moody group, and establish an analogue of the Casselman-Shalika formula for these functions.
Let F be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro and Shalika introduced the notion of newforms for irreducible generic representations of GL_n(F). In this paper, we give an explicit formula for Whittaker functions associated to newforms on the diagonal matrices in GL_n(F).
In this note, we give a formula for the Whittaker-Shintani functions for the p-adic symplectic groups, which is a generalization of the Zonal spherical functions and Whittaker functions. We then use the formula to give an alternative proof of a conjecture given by T.Shintani on the unramified calculation of L-function for $Sp_{2n}\times GL_{1}$.
In a previous paper the first two named authors defined an action of a Weyl group on rational functions and used it to construct multiple Dirichlet series. These series are related to Whittaker functions on an n-fold metaplectic cover of a reductive group. In this paper, we define metaplectic analogues of the Demazure and Demazure-Lusztig operators. We show how these operators, together with results of McNamara, can be used to compute Whittaker functions on metaplectic groups over p-adic fields.
In this paper, we consider how to express an Iwahori--Whittaker function through Demazure characters. Under some interesting combinatorial conditions, we obtain an explicit formula and thereby a generalization of the Casselman--Shalika formula. Under the same conditions, we compute the transition matrix between two natural bases for the space of Iwahori fixed vectors of an induced representation of a p-adic group; this generalizes a result of Bump--Nakasuji.
We prove the transfer congruence between $p$-adic Hecke $L$-functions for CM fields over cyclotomic extensions, which is a non-abelian generalization of the Kummer's congruence. The ingredients of the proof include the comparison between Hilbert modular varieties, the $q$-expansion principle, and some modification of Hsieh's Whittaker model for Katz' Eisenstein series. As a first application, we prove explicit congruence between special values of Hasse-Weil $L$-function of a CM elliptic curve twisted by Artin representations. As a second application, we prove the existence of a non-commutative…
Let F be a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. Let G(n) and G`(n) be the metaplectic double covers of the general symplectic group and the symplectic group attached to the 2n dimensional symplectic space over F. Let T be a genuine, possibly reducible, unramified principal series representation of G(n). In these notes we give an explicit formulas for a spanning set for the space of Spherical Whittaker functions attached to T. For odd n, and generically for even n, this spanning set is a basis. The signicant property of this set is that each of its elements is unchanged under the action…
We describe the structure of the Whittaker or Gelfand-Graev module on a $n$-fold metaplectic cover of a $p$-adic group $G$ at both the Iwahori and spherical level. We express our answer in terms of the representation theory of a quantum group at a root of unity attached to the Langlands dual group of $G$. To do so, we introduce an algebro-combinatorial model for these modules and develop for them a Kazhdan-Lusztig theory involving new generic parameters. These parameters can either be specialized to Gauss sums to recover the $p$-adic theory or to the natural grading parameter in the representa…
The study of Whittaker models for representations of reductive groups over local and global fields has become a central tool in representation theory and the theory of automorphic forms. However, only generic representations have Whittaker models. In order to encompass other representations, one attaches a degenerate (or a generalized) Whittaker model $W_{\mathcal{O}}$, or a Fourier coefficient in the global case, to any nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}$. In this note we survey some classical and some recent work in this direction - for Archimedean, p-adic and global fields. The main results conce…
The original formulae of Kuznetsov for $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ allowed one to study either a spectral average via Kloosterman sums or to study an average of Kloosterman sums via a spectral interpretation. In previous papers, we have developed the spectral Kuznetsov formulae at the minimal weights for $SL(3,\mathbb{Z}))$, and in these formulae, the big-cell Kloosterman sums occur with weight functions attached to four different integral kernels, according to the choice of signs of the indices. These correspond to the $J$- and $K$-Bessel functions in the case of $GL(2)$. In this paper, we demonstrate…
Lapid and Mao formulated a conjecture on an explicit formula of Whittaker Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on quasi-split classical groups and metaplectic groups as an analogue of Ichino-Ikeda conjecture. They also showed that this conjecture is reduced to a certain local identity in the case of unitary groups. In this paper, we study even unitary group case. Indeed, we prove this local identity over $p$-adic fields. Further, we prove an equivalence between this local identity and a refined formal degree conjecture over any local field of characteristic zero. As a consequence, we prov…
Whittaker functions are special functions that arise in $p$-adic number theory and representation theory. They may be defined on representations of reductive groups as well as their metaplectic covering groups: fascinatingly, many of their number theoretic applications survive the transition between the reductive and metaplectic cases. However, one notable difference is that the space of Whittaker functions on a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field $F$ is one-dimensional, whereas this is no longer true in the metaplectic case. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the…
Let F be a p-adic field and let G(n) and G`(n) be the metaplectic double covers of the general symplectic group and symplectic group attached to a 2n dimensional symplectic space over F. We show here that if n is odd then all the genuine irreducible representations of G(n) are induced from a normal subgroup of finite index closely related to G`(n). Thus, we reduce, in this case, the theory of genuine admissible representations of G(n) to the better understood corresponding theory of G`(n). For odd n we also prove the uniqueness of certain Whittaker functionals along with Rodier type of Heredit…
We study the local zeta integrals attached to a pair of generic representations $(π,τ)$ of $GL_n\times GL_m$, $n>m$, over a $p$-adic field. Through a process of unipotent averaging we produce a pair of corresponding Whittaker functions whose zeta integral is non-zero, and we express this integral in terms of the Langlands parameters of $π$ and $τ$. In many cases, these Whittaker functions also serve as a test vector for the associated Rankin-Selberg (local) $L$-function.
We construct a family of solvable lattice models whose partition functions include $p$-adic Whittaker functions for general linear groups from two very different sources: from Iwahori-fixed vectors and from metaplectic covers. Interpolating between them by Drinfeld twisting, we uncover unexpected relationships between Iwahori and metaplectic Whittaker functions. This leads to new Demazure operator recurrence relations for spherical metaplectic Whittaker functions. In prior work of the authors it was shown that the row transfer matrices of certain lattice models for spherical metaplectic Whitta…
By applying the formula for essential Whittaker functions established by Matringe and Miyauchi, we study five integral representations for irreducible admissible generic representations of ${\rm GL}_n$ over $p$-adic fields. In each case, we show that the integrals achieve local formal $L$-functions defined by Langlands parameters, when the test vector is associated to the newform. We give the relation between local periods involving essential Whittaker functions and special values of formal $L$-factors at $s=1$ for certain distinguished or unitary representations. The period integrals are also…
In this paper, we prove a kernel formula of Bessel functions attached to irreducible smooth supercuspidal representations of p-adic $GL(n)$. We also show that the Bessel function defined by Bessel distribution coincides with the Bessel function defined via uniqueness of Whittaker models on the open Bruhat cell. As an application we give a proof of the local converse conjecture of Jacquet.
From an analytical perspective, we introduce a sequence of Cartier operators that act on the field of formal Laurent series in one variable with coefficients in a field of positive characteristic $p$. In this work, we discover the binomial inversion formula between Hasse derivatives and Cartier operators, implying that Cartier operators can play a prominent role in various objects of study in function field arithmetic, as suitable substitutes for higher derivatives. For an applicable object, the Wronskian criteria associated with Cartier operators are introduced. These results stem from a care…
We introduce spaces of exponential constructible functions in the motivic setting for which we construct direct image functors in the absolute and relative cases. This allows us to define a motivic Fourier transformation for which we get various inversion statements. We define also motivic Schwartz-Bruhat spaces on which motivic Fourier transformation induces an isomorphism. Our motivic integrals specialize to non archimedian integrals. We give a general transfer principle comparing identities between functions defined by integrals over local fields of characteristic zero, resp. positive, havi…
