Motivated by black holes thermodynamics, we consider the zeroth law of thermodynamics for systems whose entropy is a quasi-homogeneous function of the extensive variables. We show that the generalized Gibbs-Duhem identity and the Maxwell construction for phase coexistence based on the standard zeroth law are incompatible in this case. We argue that the generalized Gibbs-Duhem identity suggests a revision of the zeroth law which in turns permits to reconsider Maxwell's construction in analogy with the standard case. The physical feasibility of our proposal is considered in the particular case of black holes.
We critically revisit the definition of thermal equilibrium, in its operational formulation, provided by standard thermodynamics. We show that it refers to experimental conditions which break the covariance of the theory at a fundamental level and that, therefore, it cannot be applied to the case of moving bodies. We propose an extension of this definition which is manifestly covariant and can be applied to the study of isolated systems in special relativity. The zeroth law of thermodynamics is, then, proven to establish an equivalence relation among bodies which have not only the same tempera…
We consider diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity with arbitrary higher derivative terms in the Lagrangian as corrections to the leading two derivative theory of Einstein's general relativity. We construct a proof of the zeroth law of black hole thermodynamics in such theories. We assume that a stationary black hole solution in an arbitrary higher derivative theory can be obtained by starting with the corresponding stationary solution in general relativity and correcting it order by order in a perturbative expansion in the coupling constants of the higher derivative Lagrangian. We prove…
We show that the equation of motion of scalar-tensor theory acquires thermodynamic identity when projected on a generic null surface. The relevant projection is given by $E_{ab}l^ak^b$, where $E_{ab} =8πT_{ab}^{(m)}$ represents the equation motion for gravitational field in presence of external matter, $l^a$ is the generator of the null surface and $k^a$ is the corresponding auxiliary null vector. Our analysis is done completely in a covariant way. Therefore all the thermodynamic quantities are in covariant form and hence can be used for any specific form of metric adapted to a null surface. W…
The zeroth principle of thermodynamics in the form "temperature is uniform at equilibrium" is notoriously violated in relativistic gravity. Temperature uniformity is often derived from the maximization of the total number of microstates of two interacting systems under energy exchanges. Here we discuss a generalized version of this derivation, based on informational notions, which remains valid in the general context. The result is based on the observation that the time taken by any system to move to a distinguishable (nearly orthogonal) quantum state is a universal quantity that depends solel…
The zeroth law of black hole mechanics is an assertion of constancy of the surface gravity on a stationary Killing horizon. The Hawking temperature of the black hole horizon is proportional to the surface gravity. Therefore, the constancy of the surface gravity is reminiscent of the zeroth law of ordinary thermodynamics. In this work, we provide a proof of the zeroth law in Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, where the Einstein Hilbert action is supplemented by higher curvature terms.
We study thermodynamics and critical behaviors of higher-dimensional Lovelock black holes with non-maximally symmetric horizons in the canonical ensemble of extended phase space. The effects from non-constancy of the horizon of the black hole via appearing two chargelike parameters in thermodynamic quantities of third-order Lovelock black holes are investigated. We find that Ricci flat black holes with nonconstant curvature horizon show critical behavior. This is an interesting feature that is not seen for any kind of black hole in Einstein or Lovelock gravity in the literature. We examine how…
It has been known that the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Sch-dS) black hole may not be in thermal equilibrium and also be found to be thermodynamically unstable in the standard black hole thermodynamics. In the present work, we investigate the possibility to realize the thermodynamical stability of the Sch-dS black hole as an effective system by using the Rényi statistics, which includes the non-extensive nature of black holes. Our results indicate that the non-extensivity allows the black hole to be thermodynamically stable which gives rise to the lower bound on the non-extensive parameter. By com…
Thermodynamics of rotating black holes described by the Rényi formula as equilibrium and zeroth law compatible entropy function is investigated. We show that similarly to the standard Boltzmann approach, isolated Kerr black holes are stable with respect to axisymmetric perturbations in the Rényi model. On the other hand, when the black holes are surrounded by a bath of thermal radiation, slowly rotating black holes can also be in stable equilibrium with the heat bath at a fixed temperature, in contrast to the Boltzmann description. For the question of possible phase transitions in the system, …
A slowly rotating black hole solution in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity was considered. Having used the obtained solution we investigated thermodynamic functions such as black hole's temperature, entropy and heat capacity. In addition to examine thermodynamic properties of the black hole extended technique was applied. The equation of state of Van der Waals type was obtained and investigated. It has been shown that the given system has phase transitions of the first as well as of the zeroth order for the temperatures below a critical one which is notable feature of the black hole. A coexiste…
A static black hole with spherical symmetry is obtained and examined in the framework of Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. The obtained black hole solution allowed us to derive and investigate entropy, temperature and heat capacity. To better examine the thermodynamics of the black hole extended phase space is also used. On this ground the equation of state is obtained and studied. We have also investigated the Gibbs free energy and it is shown that below the critical temperature the system demonstrates phase transitions of the first as well as of the zeroth order which is notable feature fo…
Hamiltonian dynamics of gravitational field contained in a spacetime region with boundary $S$ being a null-like hypersurface (a wave front) is discussed. Complete Hamiltonian formula for the dynamics (with no surface integrals neglected) is derived. A quasi-local proof of the first law of black holes thermodynamics is obtained as a consequence, in case when $S$ is a non-expanding horizon. The zeroth law and Penrose inequalities are discussed from this point of view.
Inspired by the recent studies on the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the restricted phase space formalism, we propose a similar formalism for the thermodynamics of non-AdS black holes with variable Newton constant. It is shown that, by introducing the new variables $N,μ$, where $N$ is proportional to the inverse Newton constant and $μ$ its conjugate variable, referred to as the chemical potential, the black hole thermodynamics can be formulated in a form which is consistent with the standard extensive thermodynamics for open macroscopic systems, with the first law and the Euler relation …
Although the fundamental equations of ordinary thermodynamic systems are known to correspond to first-degree homogeneous functions, in the case of non-ordinary systems like black holes the corresponding fundamental equations are not homogeneous. We present several arguments, indicating that black holes should be described by means of quasi-homogeneous functions of degree different from one. In particular, we show that imposing the first-degree condition leads to contradictory results in thermodynamics and geometrothermodynamics of black holes. As a consequence, we show that in generalized grav…
We propose a generalized thermodynamics in which quasi-homogeneity of the thermodynamic potentials plays a fundamental role. This thermodynamic formalism arises from a generalization of the approach presented in paper [1], and it is based on the requirement that quasi-homogeneity is a non-trivial symmetry for the Pfaffian form $δQ_{rev}$. It is shown that quasi-homogeneous thermodynamics fits the thermodynamic features of at least some self-gravitating systems. We analyze how quasi-homogeneous thermodynamics is suggested by black hole thermodynamics. Then, some existing results involving self-…
We present an approach to the four laws of black hole thermodynamics by utilizing the thermodynamics of quantum coherence. Firstly, Hawking effect is attributed to the decoherence of the two-mode squeezed state in a black hole spacetime. Then use is made of the relative entropy between undecohered and decohered squeezed states whose monotonicity gives the zeroth and the second law, while the first law can be obtained either by the vanishing of the first derivative of relative entropy or by studying the effective thermal model generated by the modular Hamiltonian. Futhermore, information-theore…
As the interaction between the black holes and highly energetic infalling charged matter receives quantum corrections, the basic laws of black hole mechanics have to be carefully rederived. Using the covariant phase space formalism, we generalize the first law of black hole mechanics, both "equilibrium state" and "physical process" versions, in the presence of nonlinear electrodynamics fields, defined by Lagrangians depending on both quadratic electromagnetic invariants, $F_{ab}F^{ab}$ and $F_{ab}\,{\star F}^{ab}$. Derivation of this law demands a specific treatment of the Lagrangian parameter…
In this paper we discuss the laws of thermodynamics for interacting tachyonic scalar field. The components of the tachyonic scalar field in the universe are taken to exist in the state of non-equilibrium initially, but due to interaction they undergo a transition towards the equilibrium state. We show that the zeroth law of thermodynamics demands interaction among the components of cosmic field. The second law of thermodynamics is governing dynamics in transfer of energy among the three components of the proposed field with local violation of conservation of energy for individual components.
In this work we study a homogeneous and quasilocal Thermodynamics associated to the Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black hole. The usual thermodynamic description is extended within a Hamiltonian approach with the introduction of the cosmological constant in the thermodynamic phase space. The treatment presented is consistent in as much as it respects the laws of black hole Thermodynamics and accepts the introduction of any thermodynamic potential. We are able to construct new equations of state that characterize the Thermodynamics. Novel phenomena can be expected from the proposed setup.
The thermodynamic behaviour of a charged and accelerating AdS black hole is studied in the context of extended phase space with variable cosmological constant. When compared to the charged AdS black hole without acceleration, a remarkable new feature of `snapping swallowtails' appears. Namely, for any black hole with charge $Q$ and any string tension $μ$ causing the acceleration of the black hole, there exists a transition pressure $P_t=3μ^2/(8πQ^2)$ at which the standard swallowtail `snaps', causing the branch of low temperature black holes to completely disappear, leading to a pressure induc…
In this paper, we study thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically AdS hairy and Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RNAdS) black holes in the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant is interpreted as a thermal pressure. The RNAdS and hairy black holes are black hole solutions of an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) model with a non-minimal coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields. The Smarr relation, the first law of thermodynamics and the free energy are derived for black hole solutions in the EMS model. Moreover, the phase structure of the RNAdS and hairy black holes i…
We review the problem of divergences in one--loop thermodynamical quantities for matter fields in thermal equilibrium on a black hole background. We discuss a number of results obtained for various thermodynamical quantities. Then we discuss the ansatz called ``literal interpretation" of zeroth law of black hole mechanics and try to explain the diseases of the conical defect procedure in light of this ansatz. Finally, an analysis of the consequences implied by our ansatz on the calculation of the partition function is made.
Recently a multidimensional generalization of Isolated Horizon framework has been proposed by Lewandowski and Pawlowski (gr-qc/0410146). Therein the geometric description was easily generalized to higher dimensions and the structure of the constraints induced by the Einstein equations was analyzed. In particular, the geometric version of the zeroth law of the black hole thermodynamics was proved. In this work we show how the IH mechanics can be formulated in a dimension--independent fashion and derive the first law of BH thermodynamics for arbitrary dimensional IH. We also propose a definition…
The thermodynamics of the BTZ black holes are revisited with variable Newton constant. A new pair of conjugated variables, the central charge $C$ and the chemical potential $μ$, is introduced as thermodynamic variables. The first law of thermodynamics and the Euler relation, instead of the Smarr relation in the extended phase space formalism, are matched perfectly in this formalism. Compatible with standard extensive thermodynamics, the black hole mass is verified to be a first order homogeneous function of the related extensive variables, and restores the role of internal energy. In addition,…
The thermodynamics for Kerr-AdS black hole in four dimensions is revisited using the recently proposed restricted phase space formalism, which includes the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT and the chemical potential $μ$, but excludes the pressure and the conjugate volume, as thermodynamic variables. The Euler relation holds automatically, and the first order homogeneity of the mass and the zeroth order homogeneity of the intensive variables are made explicit. Thermodynamic processes involving each pair of conjugate variables are studied in some detail, with emphasis on the scaling properties…

We examine the Zeroth Law and the Second Law of black hole thermodynamics within the context of effective gravitational actions including higher curvature interactions. We show that entropy can never decrease for quasi-stationary processes in which a black hole accretes positive energy matter, independent of the details of the gravitational action. Within a class of higher curvature theories where the Lagrangian consists of a polynomial in the Ricci scalar, we use a conformally equivalent theory to establish that stationary black hole solutions with a Killing horizon satisfy the Zeroth Law, an…
In this work a static spherically symmetric black hole's solution within the Einstein-Maxwell-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory is derived. The obtained solution is examined, in particular, we have calculated the Kretschmann scalar which allowed us to characterize singularity points. Using the obtained black hole's solution we have studied its thermodynamics. Namely, the temperature was calculated, the first law was written, and the heat capacity was studied. The extended thermodynamics approach is utilized to obtain the equation of state. Within the extended thermodynamics the Gibbs free energy is de…
In this work we review, in the framework of the so-called brick wall model, the divergence problem arising in the one loop calculations of various thermodynamical quantities, like entropy, internal energy and heat capacity. Particularly we find that, if one imposes that entanglement entropy is equal to the Bekenstein-Hawking one, the model gives problematic results. Then a proposal of solution to the divergence problem is made following the zeroth law of black hole mechanics.
In the present paper we numerically construct new charged anti-de Sitter black holes coupled to nonlinear Born-Infeld electrodynamics within a certain class of scalar-tensor theories. The properties of the solutions are investigated both numerically and analytically. We also study the thermodynamics of the black holes in the canonical ensemble. For large values of the Born-Infeld parameter and for a certain interval of the charge values we find the existence of a first-order phase transition between small and very large black holes. An unexpected result is that for a certain small charge subin…
We investigate the thermodynamic phase behaviour of rotating and slowly accelerating AdS black holes. While we find some similarities with the non-rotating charged counterparts, such as the peculiar phenomena of "snapping swallow tails" we also find subtle but significant distinctions that can be attributed to a qualitatively modified parameter space of the solution. Consequently the zeroth order phase transition now occurs over a range of pressures, mini-entropic black holes no longer exist in the regime of slow acceleration, and the "no black hole region" emerges continuously---from a zero t…
The de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) black string solution is a cylindrically symmetric and static solution of the Einstein field equation with graviton mass term. For the asymptotically de Sitter (dS) solution, it is possible to obtain the black string with two event horizons corresponding to two thermodynamic systems. The Rényi entropy is one of the entropic forms which is suitable to deal with nonextensive properties of the black string. In this work, we investigated the possibility to obtain a stable black string by using the Rényi entropy in both separated and effective approaches. We foun…
We re-derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell theory in a gauge-invariant way introducing "momentum maps" associated to field strengths and the vectors that generate their symmetries. These objects play the role of generalized thermodynamical potentials in the first law and satisfy generalized zeroth laws, as first observed in the context of principal gauge bundles by Prabhu, but they can be generalized to more complex situations. We test our ideas on the $d$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Tangherlini black hole.
The extended thermodynamics of static charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity is analyzed. The $P-V$ criticality of these black holes has some unusual features. There exists a single critical point with critical temperature $T_c$ and critical pressure $P_c$. At fixed $T>T_c$ (or at fixed $P>P_c$), there are two zeroth order phase transition points but no first order phase transition points. The systems favors large pressure states at constant $T$, or high temperature states at constant $P$.
In this paper, we take into account the dilaton black hole solutions of Einstein gravity in the presence of logarithmic and exponential forms of nonlinear electrodynamics. At first, we consider the cosmological constant and nonlinear parameter as thermodynamic quantities which can vary. We obtain thermodynamic quantities of the system such as pressure, temperature and Gibbs free energy in an extended phase space. We complete the analogy of the nonlinear dilaton black holes with Van der Waals liquid-gas system. We work in the canonical ensemble and hence we treat the charge of the black hole as…

We propose a classification of thermodynamic systems in terms of the homogeneity properties of their fundamental equations. Ordinary systems correspond to homogeneous functions and non-ordinary systems are given by generalized homogeneous functions. This affects the explicit form of the Gibbs-Duhem relation and Euler's identity. We show that these generalized relations can be implemented in the formalism of black hole geometrothermodynamics in order to completely fix the arbitrariness present in Legendre invariant metrics.
We study first order fluctuations of a relativistic membrane in the curved background of a black hole. The zeroth-order solution corresponds to a spherical membrane tightly covering the event horizon. We obtain a massive Klein-Gordon equation for the fluctuations of the membrane's radial coordinate on the 2+1 dimensional world-volume. We finally suggest that quantization of the fluctuations can be related to black hole's mass quantization and the corresponding entropy is computed. This entropy is proportional to the membrane area and is related to the one-loop correction to the thermodynamical…
The present work deals with a non-equilibrium thermodynamics that is associated with the scenario of warm inflation. The premise is that an adiabatic radiation production process holds exactly i.e. the radiation dilution is exactly counterbalanced by a dissipation term. Under this hypothesis, it is found that radiation particle number, temperature, radiation energy density and pressure are all conserved -- a contradiction to the very nature of the warm inflation dynamics. However, such exact adiabatic radiation production process never happens in any realistic analysis of warm inflation. In th…
The laws of mechanics of stationary black holes bear a close resemblance with the laws of thermodynamics. This is not only a mathematical analogy but also a physical one that helps us answer deep questions related to the thermodynamic properties of the black holes. It turns out that we can define an entropy which is purely geometrical for black holes. In this thesis we explain Wald's formulation which identifies black hole entropy for an arbitrary covariant theory of gravity. We would like to know precisely what inputs go into arriving at Wald's formalism. This expression for the entropy clear…
A unified first law of black-hole dynamics and relativistic thermodynamics is derived in spherically symmetric general relativity. This equation expresses the gradient of the active gravitational energy E according to the Einstein equation, divided into energy-supply and work terms. Projecting the equation along the flow of thermodynamic matter and along the trapping horizon of a blackhole yield, respectively, first laws of relativistic thermodynamics and black-hole dynamics. In the black-hole case, this first law has the same form as the first law of black-hole statics, with static perturbati…
Brans-Dicke cosmological models for a spatially isotropic and homogeneous universe are tested in terms of the validity of the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics (GSL). The investigation is carried out in the Einstein frame. It is found that the models are thermodynamically viable for negative values of the Brans-Dicke parameter w and thus are quite consistent with the recent accelerated expansion of the universe.
Homogeneous and isotropic, nonsingular, bouncing world models are designed to evade the initial singularity at the beginning of the cosmic expansion. Here, we study the thermodynamics of the subset of these models governed by general relativity. Considering the entropy of matter, radiation and that the entropy of the apparent horizon is proportional to its area, we argue that these models do not respect the generalised second law of thermodynamics, also away from the bounce.
