We present the multi-hop extensions of the recently proposed energy-efficient time synchronization scheme for wireless sensor networks, which is based on the asynchronous source clock frequency recovery and reversed two-way message exchanges. We consider two hierarchical extensions based on packet relaying and time-translating gateways, respectively, and analyze their performance with respect to the number of layers and the delay variations through simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that the time synchronization performance of the packet relaying, which has lower complexity, is close to that of time-translating gateways.
Clock synchronization is ubiquitous in wireless systems for communication, sensing and control. In this paper we design a scalable system in which an indefinite number of passively receiving wireless units can synchronize to a single master clock at the level of discrete clock ticks. Accurate synchronization requires an estimate of the node positions. If such information is available the framework developed here takes position uncertainties into account. In the absence of such information we propose a mechanism which enables simultaneous synchronization and positioning. Furthermore we derive t…
Industrial control systems present numerous challenges from the communication systems perspective: clock synchronization, deterministic behavior, low latency, high reliability, flexibility, and scalability. These challenges are mostly solved with standard technologies over Ethernet, e.g., Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). As a research trend, it is expected that TSN will converge with wireless, leading to the Wireless TSN paradigm. Also, Wireless TSN is expected to be integrated with Ethernet TSN to create large-scale wired-wireless (Hybrid) TSN networks. The first step towards Hybrid TSN is th…
Accurate wireless timing synchronization has been an extremely important topic in wireless sensor networks, required in applications ranging from distributed beam forming to precision localization and navigation. However, it is very challenging to realize, in particular when the required accuracy should be better than the runtime between the nodes. This work presents, to our knowledge for the first time, an experimental timing synchronization scheme that achieves a timing accuracy better than 5ns rms in a network with 4 nodes. The experimental hardware is built from commercially available comp…

With this paper we aim at providing initial observations regarding the synchronization of intermittently powered systems. In particular, we design and implement the first and very initial synchroniza…
One of the main pervasive problems Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) encounter is to maintain flawless communication sharing and cooperative processing between sensors via radio links to ensure a reliable treatment of information. Many applications based on these WSNs consider local clocks at each sensor node that need to be synchronized to a common notion of time. In this context, the majority of previous researches were focused on the study of protocols, and algorithms that address these issues in order to resolve synchronization problems. Previous fforts and empirical studies in wireless senso…
The behavior of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is nowadays widely analyzed. One of the most important issues is related to their energy consumption, as this has a major impact on the network lifetime. Another important application requirement is to ensure data sensing synchronization, which leads to additional energy consumption as a high number of messages is sent and received at each node. Our proposal consists in implementing a combined synchronization protocol based on the IEEE 1588 standard that was designed for wired networks and the PBS (Pairwise Broadcast Synchronization) protocol that…
We report preliminary results of a simulation study on the multi-hop extension of the recently-proposed energy-efficient wireless sensor network time synchronization scheme based on time-translating gateways. Unlike the single-hop case, in multi-hop time synchronization a sensor node sends measurement data to a head node through gateways which translate the timestamp values of the received measurement data. Through simulations for two-hop time synchronization, we analyze the impact of the addition of a gateway and its translation of timestamp values on the clock frequency and measurement time …
In a wireless sensor network, nodes communicate time-stamped packets in order to synchronize their clocks, i.e., estimate each other's time display. We introduce and analyze a parametrized stochastic model for clocks and use it to calculate, at any given time, the Maximum-Likelihood (ML) estimate of the relative skew/offset between two communicating nodes. For network synchronization, event-based Kalman-Bucy filtering gives rise to a centralized scheme, and we propose an efficient distributed suboptimal algorithm. We study the performance both analytically and experimentally and provide provab…
Due to their heavy restrictions on the hardware side, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) require specially adapted synchronization protocols to maximize measurement precision and minimize computation efforts and energy costs. A promising approach is given by the 'Firefly Protocol'. Inspired by the behavior of fireflies it is intrinsically robust, specific to the wireless broadcast nature of WSNs and promises high precision. So far only theoretically evaluated, this thesis implements the 'Firefly Protocol' on a system of MICAz Berkeley motes using TinyOS 2.x. In order to implement the theoretical f…
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), implementing a high-precision time synchronization scheme on resource-constrained sensor nodes is a major challenge. Our investigation of the practical implementation on a real testbed of the state-of-the-art WSN time synchronization scheme based on the asynchronous source clock frequency recovery and the reverse two-way message exchange, which can compensate for both propagation delay and clock skew for higher precision, reveals that its performance on battery-powered, low-complexity sensor nodes is not up to that predicted from simulation experiments due t…
One-way-broadcast based flooding time synchronization algorithms are commonly used in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, the packet delay and clock drift pose challenges to accuracy, as they entail serious by-hop error accumulation problems in the WSNs. To overcome it, a rapid flooding multi-broadcast time synchronization with real-time delay compensation (RDC-RMTS) is proposed in this paper. By using a rapid-flooding protocol, flooding latency of the referenced time information is significantly reduced in the RDC-RMTS. In addition, a new joint clock skew-offset maximum likelihood estim…
Clock synchronization is a key function in embedded wireless systems and networks. This issue is equally important and more challenging in IoT systems nowadays, which often include heterogeneous wireless devices that follow different wireless standards. Conventional solutions to this problem employ gateway-based indirect synchronization, which suffers low accuracy. This paper for the first time studies the problem of cross-technology clock synchronization. Our proposal called Crocs synchronizes WiFi and ZigBee devices by direct cross-technology communication. Crocs decouples the synchronizatio…
In this paper we report preliminary results of a simulation study on an energy-efficient time synchronization scheme based on source clock frequency recovery (SCFR) at sensor nodes in asymmetric wireless sensor networks (WSNs), where a head node --- serving as a gateway between wired and wireless networks --- is equipped with a powerful processor and supplied power from outlet, and sensor nodes --- connected only through wireless channels --- are limited in processing and battery-powered. In the SCFR-based WSN time synchronization scheme, we concentrate on battery-powered sensor nodes and redu…
This paper develops a fast, accurate and energy-efficient time synchronization protocol in wireless sensor networks that operate in harsh environments. The suggested protocol concept is based on an electrical physical metaphor. The protocol treats the nodes times as the states of an unconditionally stable discrete dynamical system that uses only single hop communication. The system can terminate at a low number of message exchanges while still in the transient phase. It can yield high quality time estimates with accuracies that are fractions of the clock at which node communication takes place…

The paper addresses state estimation for clock synchronization in the presence of factors affecting the quality of synchronization. Examples are temperature variations and delay asymmetry. These working conditions make synchronization a challenging problem in many wireless environments, such as Wireless Sensor Networks or WiFi. Dynamic state estimation is investigated as it is essential to overcome non-stationary noises. The two-way timing message exchange synchronization protocol has been taken as a reference. No a-priori assumptions are made on the stochastic environments and no temperature …

The usage of the close-loop data from sensors in the manufacturing chain is extending the common monitoring scenario of the Wireless Sensors Networks WSN where data were just logged. In this paper we present an accurate timing synchronization for TDMA implemented on the state of art IoT radio, such as LoRa, that is a good solution in industrial environments for its high robustness. Experimental results show how it is possible to modulate the drift correction and keep the synchronization…
Time synchronization is important for a variety of applications in wireless sensor networks including scheduling communication resources, coordinating sensor wake/sleep cycles, and aligning signals for distributed transmission/reception. This paper describes a non-hierarchical approach to time synchronization in wireless sensor networks that has low overhead and can be implemented at the physical and/or MAC layers. Unlike most of the prior approaches, the approach described in this paper allows all nodes to use exactly the same distributed algorithm and does not require local averaging of meas…

Message bundling is an effective way to reduce the energy consumption for message transmissions in wireless sensor networks. However, bundling more messages could increase both end-to-end delay and message transmission interval; the former needs to be maintained within a certain value for time-sensitive applications like environmental monitoring, while the latter affects time synchronization accuracy when the bundling includes synchronization messages as well. Taking as an example a novel time synchronization scheme recently proposed for energy efficiency, we propose an optimal message bundlin…
Fast data synchronization in wireless ad hoc networks is a challenging and critical problem. It is fundamental for efficient information fusion, control and decision in distributed systems. Previously, distributed data synchronization was mainly studied in the latency-tolerant distributed databases, or assuming the general model of wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a pair of linear network coding (NC) and all-to-all broadcast based fast data synchronization algorithms for wireless ad hoc networks whose topology is under operator's control. Low latency and reliable information transfer are highly demanded in fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G wireless communications. A novel delay-bounded wireless media access control (MAC) protocol called Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Arbitration Point (CSMA/AP) was established to strictly ensure the upper boundary of communication delay. CSMA/AP enables collision-free and delay-bounded communications with a simple arbitration mechanism exploiting the precise time synchronization achieved by Wireless Two-Way Interferometry (Wi-Wi). Experimental demonstration and proving the feasibility in …
The actual performance of video delivery over wireless networks is best captured through experimental studies over real testbed, which is crucial to uncover the technical problems and practical challenges of realizing the proposed video delivery techniques. Network coding (NC) provides a paradigm shift to optimize the network resources for enhancing the video quality as a result of delivery over multi-hop wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for evaluating the performance of NC-based video delivery over multi-hop wireless networks. Based on an experimental testbed imp…
Congestions in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) could potentially cause packet loss, throughput impairment and energy waste. To address this issue, a hop-by-hop cross-layer congestion control scheme (HCCC) built on contention-based MAC protocol is proposed in this paper. According to MAC-layer channel information including buffer occupancy ratio and congestion degree of local node, HCCC dynamically adjusts channel access priority in MAC layer and data transmission rate of the node to tackle the problem of congestion. Simulations have been conducted to compare HCCC against closely-related existi…
We consider energy-efficient time synchronization in a wireless sensor network where a head node (i.e., a gateway between wired and wireless networks and a center of data fusion) is equipped with a powerful processor and supplied power from outlet, and sensor nodes (i.e., nodes measuring data and connected only through wireless channels) are limited in processing and battery-powered. It is this asymmetry that our study focuses on; unlike most existing schemes to save the power of all network nodes, we concentrate on battery-powered sensor nodes in minimizing energy consumption for time synchro…
The ever-increasing number of WSN deployments based on a large number of battery-powered, low-cost sensor nodes, which are limited in their computing and power resources, puts the focus of WSN time synchronization research on three major aspects, i.e., accuracy, energy consumption and computational complexity. In the literature, the latter two aspects have not received much attention compared to the accuracy of WSN time synchronization. Especially in multi-hop WSNs, intermediate gateway nodes are overloaded with tasks for not only relaying messages but also a variety of computations for their …
In this paper, we propose LMEEC, a cluster-based routing protocol with low energy consumption for wireless sensor networks. Our protocol is based on a strategy which aims to provide a more reasonable exploitation of the selected nodes (cluster-heads) energy. Simulation results show the effectiveness of LMEEC in decreasing the energy consumption, and in prolonging the network lifetime, compared to LEACH.
Large-scale wireless testbeds have been setup in the last years with the goal to study wireless multi-hop networks in more realistic environments. Since the setup and operation of such a testbed is expensive in terms of money, time, and labor, the crucial question rises whether this effort is justified with the scientific results the testbed generates. In this paper, we give an answer to this question based on our experience with the DES-Testbed, a large-scale wireless sensor network and wireless mesh network testbed. The DES-Testbed has been operated for almost 5 years. Our analysis comprises…

In this paper, we present the performance of different broadcast schemes for multihop sensor networks based on mathematical modeling. In near future many applications will demand multicast (Broadcast) communication feature from the sensor networks. This broadcast feature does not use virtual carrier sensing but relies on physical carrier sensing to reduce collision. For this paper, we analyze the different broadcast schemes for multihop wireless sensor networks and also calculated the achievable throughput.
In this paper, we consider the problem of modelling the average delay in an IEEE 802.11 DCF wireless mesh network with a single root node under light traffic. We derive expression for mean delay for a co-located wireless mesh network, when packet generation is homogeneous Poisson process with rate λ. We also show how our analysis can be extended for non-homogeneous Poisson packet generation. We model mean delay by decoupling queues into independent M/M/1 queues. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the analytical results.
Testbeds are a key element in the evaluation of wireless multi-hop networks. In order to relieve researchers from the hassle of deploying their own testbeds, remotely controllable testbeds, such as the FIT/IoT-LAB, are built. However, while the IoT-LAB has a high number of nodes, they are deployed in constraint areas. This, together with the complex nature of radio propagation, makes an ad-hoc construction of multi-hop topologies with a high number of hops difficult. This work presents a strategic approach to solve this problem and proposes algorithms to generate topologies with desired proper…
In wireless networks, stations can improve their received quality of service (QoS) by handling packets of source flows with higher priority. Additionally, in cooperative relay networks, the relays can handle transit flows with lower priority. We use game theory to model a two-hop relay network where each of the two involved stations can commit such selfish QoS manipulation. We design and evaluate a reputation-based incentive scheme called RISC2WIN, whereby a trusted third party (e.g., an access point) can limit selfish behavior and preserve appropriate QoS for both stations.
This paper proposes a Traffic-Differentiated Two-Hop Routing protocol for Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It targets WSN applications having different types of data traffic with several priorities. The protocol achieves to increase Packet Reception Ratio (PRR) and reduce end-to-end delay while considering multi-queue priority policy, two-hop neighborhood information, link reliability and power efficiency. The protocol is modular and utilizes effective methods for estimating the link metrics. Numerical results show that the proposed protocol is a feasible solution t…
The growing demand of high-bandwidth and low-latency information transfer in information and communication technologies such as data centres and in-vehicle networks has increased the importance of optical communication networks in recent years. However, complicated arbitration schemes can impose significant overheads in data transfer, which may inhibit the full exploitation of the potential of optical interconnects. Herein, we propose an arbitration protocol based on precision time synchronization via wireless two-way interferometry (Wi-Wi), and numerically validate its efficiency including th…
Energy efficiency and transmission delay are very important parameters for wireless multi-hop networks. Previous works that study energy efficiency and delay are based on the assumption of reliable links. However, the unreliability of the channel is inevitable in wireless multi-hop networks. This paper investigates the trade-off between the energy consumption and the end-to-end delay of multi-hop communications in a wireless network using an unreliable link model. It provides a closed form expression of the lower bound on the energy-delay trade-off for different channel models (AWGN, Raleigh f…
Supporting real-time communications over Wireless networks (WSNs) is a tough challenge, due to packet collisions and the non-determinism of common channel access schemes like CSMA/CA. Real-time WSN communication is even more problematic in the general case of multi-hop mesh networks. For this reason, many real-time WSN solutions are limited to simple topologies, such as star networks. We propose a real-time multi-hop WSN MAC protocol built atop the IEEE 802.15.4 physical layer. By relying on precise clock synchronization and constructive interference-based flooding, the proposed MAC builds a c…
One of the limitations of wireless sensor nodes is their inherent limited energy resource. Besides maximizing the lifetime of the sensor node, it is preferable to distribute the energy dissipated throughout the wireless sensor network in order to minimize maintenance and maximize overall system performance. Any communication protocol that involves synchronization of peer nodes incurs some overhead for setting up the communication. We introduce a new algorithm, e3D (energy-efficient Distributed Dynamic Diffusion routing algorithm), and compare it to two other algorithms, namely directed, and ra…
Wireless sensor networks have been increasingly used for real-time surveillance over large areas. In such applications, it is important to support end-to-end delay constraints for packet deliveries even when the corresponding flows require multi-hop transmissions. In addition to delay constraints, each flow of real-time surveillance may require some guarantees on throughput of packets that meet the delay constraints. Further, as wireless sensor networks are usually deployed in challenging environments, it is important to specifically consider the effects of unreliable wireless transmissions. I…
Designing energy-efficient all-to-all multicasting protocols is of of great importance for multi-hop wireless networks such as wireless sensor networks and wireless ad hoc networks. In an all-to-all multicast session, there exists a set of wireless destination nodes, and each destination node needs to send some data packets to all other destination nodes. We consider the problem of building a shared multicast tree spanning the destination nodes such that the total energy consumption of realizing an all-to-all multicast session using the shared multicast tree is minimized. Since building such a…
The link scheduling in wireless multi-hop networks is addressed. Different from most of work that adopt the protocol interference model which merely take consideration of packet collisions, our proposed algorithms use the physical interference model to reflect the aggregated signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR), which is a more accurate abstraction of the real scenario. We first propose a centralized scheduling method based on the Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and resolve it by an approximate solution based on the randomized rounding method. The probability bound of getting a guara…
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the dominant reliable transport protocol utilized in the Internet. Improving the performance of TCP associated with the presence of multi-hop is one of the research challenges in wireless mesh networks. Wireless mesh networks have large round trip time variations and these variations are dependent on the number of hops. In wireless mesh network, when congestion loss and wireless loss are co-existed the number of packets dropped increases and will have adverse effects on TCP and its congestion control mechanism which leads to low throughput. Here we have d…
In this paper we consider security-related and energy-efficiency issues in multi-hop wireless networks. We start our work from the observation, known in the literature, that shortest path routing creates congested areas in multi-hop wireless networks. These areas are critical--they generate both security and energy efficiency issues. We attack these problems and set out routing in outer space, a new routing mechanism that transforms any shortest path routing protocol (or approximated versions of it) into a new protocol that, in case of uniform traffic, guarantees that every node of the network…
Given the increasing demand from wireless applications, designing energy-efficient group communication protocols is of great importance to multi-hop wireless networks. A group communication session involves a set of member nodes, each of them needs to send a certain number of data packets to all other members. In this paper, we consider the problem of building a shared multicast tree spanning the member nodes such that the total energy consumption of a group communication session using the shared multicast tree is minimized. Since this problem was proven as NP-complete, we propose, under our M…
We quantify the throughput capacity of wireless multi-hop networks with several medium access schemes. We analyze pure ALOHA scheme where simultaneous transmitters are dispatched according to a uniform Poisson distribution and exclusion schemes where simultaneous transmitters are dispatched according to an exclusion rule such as node coloring and carrier sense based schemes. Our results show that, under no-fading, slotted ALOHA can achieve at least one-third (or half under Rayleigh fading) of the throughput capacity of nod…
The increasing trend in wireless Internet access has been boosted by IEEE 802.11. However, the application scenarios are still limited by its short radio range. Stub Wireless Multi-hop Networks (WMNs) are a robust, flexible, and cost-effective solution to the problem. Yet, typically they are formed by single radio mesh nodes and suffer from hidden node, unfairness, and scalability problems. We propose a simple multi-radio, multi-channel WMN solution, named Wi-Fi network Infrastructure eXtension - Dual-Radio (WiFIX-DR), to overcome these problems. WiFIX-DR reuses IEEE 802.11 built-in mechanisms…
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have severe energy constraints imposed by limited capacity of the internal battery of sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose a centralized control to elect more appropriate Cluster Heads, assuming three levels of heterogeneity and multi-hop communication between Cluster Heads. The centralized control uses the k-means algorithm, responsible for the division of clusters and Fuzzy Logic to elect the Cluster Head and…
