A Borromean nucleus is a bound three-body system which is pairwise unbound because none of the two-body subsystem interactions are strong enough to bind them in pairs. As a consequence, the single-particle spectrum of a neutron in the core of a Borromean nucleus is purely continuum, similarly to the spectrum of a free neutron, but two valence neutrons are bound up in such a core. Most of the usual approaches do not use the true continuum to solve the three-body problem but use a discrete basis, like for example, wave functions in a finite box. In this paper the proper continuum is used to solve the pairing Hamiltonian in the continuum spectrum of energy by using the single particle level density devoid of the free gas. It is shown that the density defined in this way modulates the pairing in the continuum. The partial-wave occupation probabilities for the Borromean nuclei $^6$He and $^{11}$Li are calculated as a function of the pairing strength. While at the threshold strength the $(s_{1/2})^2$ and $(p_{3/2})^2$ configurations are equally important in $^6$He, the $(s_{1/2})^2$ configuration is the main one in $^{11}$Li. For very small strength the $(s_{1/2})^2$ configuration becomes the dominant in both Borromean nuclei. At the physical strength, the calculated wave function amplitudes show a good agreement with other methods and experimental data which indicates that this simple model grasps the essence of the pairing in the continuum.
It is shown that the three-body non-Borromean halo nuclei like ^{12}Be, ^{18}C, ^{20}C have p-wave virtual states with energy of about 1.6 times the corresponding neutron-core binding energy. We use a renormalizable model that guarantees the general validity of our results in the context of short range interactions.
We study the eikonal model for the nuclear-induced breakup of Borromean nuclei, using Li11 and He6 as examples. The full eikonal model is difficult to realize because of six-dimensional integrals, but a number of simplifying approximations are found to be accurate. The integrated diffractive and one-nucleon stripping cross sections are rather insensitive to the neutron-neutron correlation, but the two-nucleon stripping does show some dependence on the correlation. The distribution of excitation energy in the neutron-core final state in one-neutron stripping reactions is quite sensitive to the …
We solve the coordinate space Faddeev equations in the continuum. We employ hyperspherical coordinates and provide analytical expressions allowing easy computation of the effective potentials at distances much larger than the ranges of the interactions where only s-waves in the different Jacobi coordinates couple. Realistic computations are carried out for the Borromean halo nuclei 6He (n+n+α) for Jπ= 0+-, 1+-, 2+- and 11Li (n+n+9Li) for (1/2)+-, (3/2)+-, (5/2)+-. Ground state properties, strength functions, Coulomb dissociation cross sections, phase shifts, complex S-matrix poles are computed…
We exploit the possibility of new configurations in three-body halo nuclei - Samba type - (the neutron-core form a bound system) as a doorway to Borromean systems. The nuclei $^{12}$Be, $^{15}$B, $^{23}$N and $^{27}$F are of such nature, in particular $^{23}$N with a half-life of 37.7 s and a halo radius of 6.07 fm is an excellent example of Samba-halo configuration. The fusion below the barrier of the Samba halo nuclei with heavy targets could reveal the so far elusive enhancement and a dominance of one-neutron over two-neutron transfers, in contrast to what was found recently for the Borrome…
We discuss the geometry of the highly quantal nuclear three-body systems composed of a core plus two loosely bound particles. These Borromean nuclei have no single bound two-body subsystem. Correlation plays a prominent role. From consideration of the $B(E1)$ value extracted from electromagnetic dissociation, in conjunction with HBT-type analysis of the two valence-halo particles correlation, we show that an estimate of the over-all geometry can be deduced. In particular we find that the opening angle between the two neutrons in $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li are, respectively, $θ_{nn} = {83^{\circ}}^…
We analyze the Coulomb breakup cross sections of $^{11}$Li and $^6$He nuclei using a three-body model with a density-dependent contact interaction. We show that the concentration of the B(E1) strength near the threshold can be well reproduced with this model. With the help of the calculated B(E1) value, we extract the root-mean-square (rms) distance between the core nucleus and the center of mass of two valence neutrons without resorting to the sum rule, which may suffer from unphysical Pauli forbidden transitions. Together with the empirical rms distance between the neutrons obtained from the…
Borromean nuclear cluster structures are expected at the corresponding driplines. We locate the regions in the nuclear chart with the most promising constituents, it being protons and alpha-particles and investigate in details the properties of the possible borromean two-alpha systems in medium heavy nuclei. We find in all cases that the alpha-particles are located at the surface of the core-nucleus as dictated by Coulomb and centrifugal barriers. The two lowest three-body bound states resemble a slightly contracted $^{8}\text{Be}$ nucleus outside the core. The next two excited states have mor…
We describe a schematic coupled channels transfer calculation for the reaction 6He + 238U at near-barrier energies. We also present a simple semiclassical DWBA calculation of the two neutron transfer. Both calculations are meant to supply the conditions under which the transfer cross section becomes much larger than the complete fusion one at sub-barrier energies. It seems that a feasible mechanism is the incoherent contributions of two or more processes with quite different Q-vlaues.
The analysis of the core recoil momentum distribution of neutron-rich isotopes of light exotic nuclei is performed within a model of the halo nuclei described by a core and two neutrons dominated by the $s-$wave channel. We adopt the renormalized three-body model with a zero-range force, that accounts for the universal Efimov physics. This model is applicable to nuclei with large two-neutron halos compared to the core size, and a neutron-core scattering length larger than the interaction range. The halo wave function in momentum space is obtained by using as inputs the two-neutron separation e…
Background. Knockout reactions with proton targets provide an invaluable tool to access the properties of two-neutron halo nuclei. Recently, experimental results for the average opening angle as a function of the intrinsic neutron momentum in 11Li have shown a localization of dineutron correlations on the nucleus surface. Purpose. Study the model dependence and the effect of distortion and absorption on the opening angle distributions to assess the reliability of this observable to extract properties of Borromean two-neutron halo nuclei. Method. A quasifree sudden model is used to describe the…
We discuss the energy and angular distributions of two emitted neutrons from the dipole excitation of typical weakly-bound Borromean nuclei, $^{11}$Li and $^6$He. To this end, we use a three-body model with a density dependent contact interaction between the valence neutrons. Our calculation indicates that the energy distributions for the valence neutrons are considerably different between the two nuclei, although they show similar strong dineutron correlations in the ground state to each other. This different behaviour of the energy distribution primarily reflects the interaction between the …
We derive the inclusive breakup cross section of a three-fragment projectile nuclei, $a = b +x_1 + x_2$, in the spectator model. The resulting four-body cross section for observing $b$, is composed of the elastic breakup cross section which contains information about the correlation between the two participant fragments, and the inclusive non-elastic breakup cross section. This latter cross section is found to be a non-trivial four-body generalization of the Austern formula \cite{Austern1987}, which is proportional to a matrix element of the form, $\langle\hatρ_{{x_1},{x_2}}\left|\left[W_{x_1}…
To discuss the dineutron correlation in the ground state, the quasi-free neutron knockout reaction on $^6$He is investigated. In the present work, the momentum distribution of the two emitted neutrons is calculated with the $α$~+~$n$~+~$n$ three-body model and a simple reaction model to assess the effects of the knockout process via the $^5$He resonance and the target dependence in the momentum distribution. A clear signature of the dineutron correlation can be obtained by choosing the kinematical condition so the process via the $^5$He resonance is excluded because the $^5$He resonance drastic…
Recently, a square-integrable discrete basis, obtained performing a simple analytical local scale transformation to the harmonic oscillator basis, has been proposed and successfully applied to study the properties of two-body systems. Here, the method is generalized to study three-body systems. To test the goodness of the formalism and establish its applicability and limitations, the capture reaction rate for the nucleosynthesis of the Borromean nucleus 6He (4He + n + n) is addressed. Results are compared with previous publications and with calculations based on actual three-body continuum wav…
One-neutron removal $(p,pn)$ reactions induced by two-neutron Borromean nuclei are studied within a Transfer-to-the-Continuum (TC) reaction framework, which incorporates the three-body character of the incident nucleus. The relative energy distribution of the residual unbound two-body subsystem, which is assumed to retain information on the structure of the original three-body projectile, is computed by evaluating the transition amplitude for different neutron-core final states in the continuum. These transition amplitudes depend on the overlaps between the original three-body ground-state wav…
The recently extracted matter radius of carbon isotope $^{22}$C allows us to estimate the mean-square distance of a halo neutron with respect to the center-of-mass of this nucleus. By considering this information, we suggest an energy region for an experimental investigation of the unbound $^{21}$C virtual state. Our analysis, in a renormalized zero-ranged three-body model, also indicates that the two-neutron separation energy in $^{22}$C is expected to be found below $\sim$0.4~MeV, where the $^{22}$C is approximated by a Borromean configuration with a pointlike $^{20}$C and two $s$-wave halo …
We develop a model to treat the inclusive non-elastic break up reactions involving weakly bound three-cluster nuclei. Borromean, two-nucleon, halo nuclei are candidates of unstable three-fragments projectiles. The model is based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. The theory was developed in the 80's by Ichimura, Autern and Vincent (IAV) [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)] \cite{IAV1985}, Udagawa and Tamura (UT)[Phys. Rev. C 24, 1348 (1981)], \cite{UT1981} and Hussein and McVoy (HM)[Nucl. Phys. A 445, 124 (1985)],…
An analytical model, recently developed to study the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) energy spectra of two-neutron halo nuclei, is applied to 11-Li and 14-Be. We find that a reliable set of experimental data on EMD could help to resolve the problem concerning the structure of the 11-Li ground state. For 14-Be we find a mutual inconsistency between the existing experimental data on the binding energy, radius and EMD energy spectrum. We also conclude that the structure of 14-Be is essentially more complicated than the structure of other Borromean two--neutron halo nuclei.
We perform three-body model calculations for soft dipole excitations of the proton-rich Borromean nucleus $^{17}$Ne. To this end, we assume that $^{17}$Ne takes the $^{15}$O+p+p structure, in which the two valence protons are excited from the $0^+$ ground state configuration to $1^-$ continuum states. We employ a density-dependent contact force for the nuclear part of the pairing interaction, and discretize the continuum states with the box boundary condition. We show by explicitly including the Coulomb interaction between the valence protons that the Coulomb repulsion does not significantly a…
We study the Borromean nuclei formed by a core nucleus and two neutrons in a nonrelativistic effective field theory formalism considering both neutron-neutron and neutron-core interactions. We provide formulae of the charge and matter radii, and successfully reproduce the universal relation proposed by Hongo and Son based on the approximation of an infinite neutron-neutron scattering length and neglecting the neutron-core scattering. Once the realistic finite neutron-neutron and neutron-core scattering lengths are used, the charge and matter radii are influenced by the neutron-core channel in …
Cooper pair sizes are evaluated in a simple harmonic oscillator model reproducing the values of sophisticated HFB calculations. Underlying reasons for the very small sizes of 2.0-2.5 fm of Cooper pairs in the surface of nuclei are analysed. It is shown that the confining properties of the nuclear volume is the dominating effect. It is argued that for Cooper pair sizes LDA is particularly inadapted.
We present a new procedure of isospin symmetry breaking of cooper-quartets in nuclear matter using Ginzburg-Landau theory, namely we couple the cooper-quartets to the pion-meson field and $SU(2)$ gluons. The paper also describes phenomena resulting from this approach.
With realistic HFB calculations, using the D1S Gogny force, we reveal a generic behavior of concentration of small sized Cooper pairs (2-3 fm) in the surface of superfluid nuclei. This study confirms and extends previous results given in the literature that use more schematic approaches.
Asymptotic form of neutron Cooper pair penetrating to the exterior of nuclear surface is investigated with the Bogoliubov theory for the superfluid Fermions. Based on a two-particle Schrödinger equation governing the Cooper pair wave function and systematic studies for both weakly bound and stable nuclei, the Cooper pair is shown to be spatially correlated even in the asymptotic large distance limit, and the penetration length of the pair condensate is revealed to be universally governed by the two-neutron separation energy $S_{2n}$ and the di-neutron mass $2m$.
We discuss in this paper both the past and the present of two-nucleon transfer reactions, as well as try to foresee the near future of such studies in nuclei, induced by light as well as by heavy ion reactions.
We point out a strong influence of the pairing force on the size of the two neutron Cooper pair in $^{11}$Li, and to a lesser extent also in $^6$He. It seems that these are quite unique situations, since Cooper pair sizes of stable superfluid nuclei are very little influenced by the intensity of pairing, as recently reported. We explore the difference between $^{11}$Li and heavier superfulid nuclei, and discuss reasons for the exceptional situation in $^{11}$Li.
The second order DWBA implementation of two-particle transfer direct reactions which includes simultaneous and successive transfer, properly corrected by non-orthogonality effects is tested with the help of controlled nuclear structure and reaction inputs against data spanning the whole mass table, and showed to constitute a quantitative probe of nuclear pairing correlations.
We discuss the spatial structure of the Cooper pair in dilute neutron matter and neutron-rich nuclei by means of the BCS theory and the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogioliubov model, respectively. The neutron pairing in dilute neutron matter is close to the region of the BCS-BEC crossover in a wide density range, giving rise to spatially compact Cooper pair whose size is smaller than the average interaparticle distance. This behavior extends to moderate low density ($\sim 10^{-1}$ of the saturation density) where the Cooper pair size becomes smallerst ($\sim 5$ fm). The Cooper pair in finite nuclei al…
We consider the development of Cooper pairs in a self-consistent Hartree Fock mean field for the even Sm isotopes. Results are presented at the level of a BCS treatment, a number-projected BCS treatment and an exact treatment using the Richardson ansatz. While projected BCS captures much of the pairing correlation energy that is absent from BCS, it still misses a sizable correlation energy, typically of order $1 MeV$. Furthermore, because it does not average over the properties of the fermion pairs, the exact Richardson solution permits a more meaningful definition of the Cooper wave function …
The bare NN-potential, parametrized so as to reproduce the nuclear phase shifts leads to a sizable Cooper pair binding energy in nuclei along the stability valley. It is a much debated matter whether this value accounts for the "empirical" value of the pairing gap or whether a similarly important contribution arises from the exchange of collective vibrations between Cooper pair partners. In keeping with the fact that two-particle transfer reactions are the specific probe of pairing in nuclei, and that exotic halo nuclei like 11Li are extremely polarizable, we find that the recent studied react…
Four-body distorted wave theory appropriate for nucleon-nucleus reactions leading to 3-body continuum excitations of two-neutron Borromean halo nuclei is developed. The peculiarities of the halo bound state and 3-body continuum are fully taken into account by using the method of hyperspherical harmonics. The procedure is applied for A=6 test-bench nuclei; thus we report detailed studies of inclusive cross sections for inelastic $^6$He(p,p')$^6$He$^*$ and charge-exchange $^6$Li(n,p)$^6$He$^*$ reactions at nucleon energy 50 MeV. The theoretical low-energy spectra exhibit two resonance-like struc…
The development of a continuum-bins scheme of discretization for three-body projectiles is necessary for studies of reactions of Borromean nuclei such as 6He within the continuum-discretized coupled-channels approach. Such a procedure, for constructing bin states on selected continuum energy intervals, is formulated and applied for the first time to reactions of a three-body projectile. The continuum representation uses the eigenchannel expansion of the three-body S-matrix. The method is applied to the challenging case of the 6He + 208Pb reaction at 22 MeV, where an accurate treatment of both …
In this work we test the validity of a Hartree-Fock plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model in which a finite-range interaction is used in the two steps of the calculation by comparing the results obtained to those found in a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the same interaction.Specifically, we consider the Gogny-type D1S and D1M forces. We study a wide range of spherical nuclei, far from the stability line, in various regions of the nuclear chart, from oxygen to tin isotopes. We calculate various quantities related to the ground state properties of these nuclei, …
A system of equations is obtained for the Cooper gap in nuclei. The system takes two mechanisms of superfluidity into account in an approximation quadratic in the phonon- production amplitude : a Bardeen- Cooper- Schrieffer (BCS) type mechanism and a quasiparticle- phonon mechanism. These equations are solved for 120 Sn in a realistic approximation. If the simple procedures proposed are used to determine the new particle- particle interaction and to estimate the average effect, then the contribution of the quasiparticle- phonon mechanism to the observed width of the pairing gap is 26% and the …
The phenomenon of low-temperature superconductivity is intimately associated with the condensation of weakly bound, very extended, strongly overlapping Cooper pairs, and systematic experimental studies of the associated mean square radius (coherence length) have been made. While the extension of BCS theory to the atomic nucleus has been successful beyond expectation, to our knowledge, no measurement of the nuclear coherence length (expected to be much larger than nuclear dimensions) has been reported in the literature. Recent studies of Cooper pair transfer across a Josephson-like junction, tr…
In order to analyse the role of the quasiparticle-phonon interaction in the origin of nuclear gap, we applied an approach which is similar to the Eliashberg theory for usual superconductors. We obtained that the averaged contribution of the quasiparticle-phonon mechanism to the observed value of the pairing gap for $^{120}$Sn is 26% and the BCS-type mechanism gives 74% . Thus, pairing is of a mixed nature at least in semi-magic nuclei -- it is due to the quasiparticle-phonon and BCS mechanisms, the first one being mainly a surface mechanism and the second one mainly a volume mechanism. The cal…
The tunneling of composite systems, where breakup may occur during the barrier penetration process is considered in connection with the fusion of halo-like radioactive, neutron- and proton-rich nuclei on heavy targets. The large amount of recent and new data clearly indicates that breakup hinders the fusion at near and below the Coulomb barrier energies. However, clear evidence for the halo enhancements, seems to over ride the breakup hindrance at lower energies, owing, to a large extent, to the extended matter density distribution. In particular we report here that at sub-barrier energies the…

We investigate the spatial structure of the two-neutron wave function in the Borromean nucleus $^{11}$Li, using a three-body model of $^9$Li $+n+n$, which includes many-body correlations stemming from the Pauli principle. The behavior of the neutron pair at different densities is simulated by calculating the two-neutron wave function at several distances between the core nucleus $^9$Li and the center of mass of the two neutrons. With this representation, a strong concentration of the neutron pair on the nuclear surface is for the first time quantitatively established for neutron-rich nuclei. T…
In this paper we show that the theory of transfer reactions from bound to continuum states is well suited to extract structure information from data obtained by performing "spectroscopy in the continuum". The low energy unbound states of nuclei such as $^{10}$Li and $^{5}$He can be analyzed and the neutron-core interaction, necessary to describe the corresponding borromean nuclei $^{11}$Li and $^{6}$He can be determined in a semi-phenomenological way. An application to the study of $^{10}$Li is then discussed and it is shown that the scattering length for s-states at threshold can be obtained …
Two-nucleon removal (or knock-out) reactions at intermediate energies are a developing tool for both nuclear spectroscopy and for the study of certain nucleon correlations in very exotic and some stable nuclei. We present an overview of these reactions with specific emphasis on the nature of the two-nucleon correlations that can be probed. We outline future possibilities and tests needed to fully establish these sensitivities.
Josephson-like junctions, transiently established in heavy ion collisions between superfluid nuclei, few MeV below the Coulomb barrier, allow for the back and forth transfer of a nuclear Cooper pair of effectively charged nucleons and thus the emission of $γ$-rays. The second order DWBA $T$-matrix formulation of single Cooper pair alternating current is shown to contain the gauge phases and gauge rotational frequencies as required by the Josephson (ac) effect, in keeping with the derivation of the transfer (tunneling) Hamiltonian in a gauge invariant representation. We describe the emergence o…
Rotational motion of heated 72-Ge is studied within the microscopic Shell Model Monte Carlo approach. We investigate the the angular momentum alignment and nuclear pairing correlations associated with J-pi Cooper pairs as a function of the rotational frequency and temperature. The reentrance of pairing correlations with temperature is predicted at high rotational frequencies. It manifests itself through the anomalous behavior of specific heat and level density.
With the help of the static and dynamic mean field spectroscopic amplitudes, taking into account successive and simultaneous transfer channels properly corrected because of non-orthogonality effects, as well as describing the associated elastic channels in terms of experimentally determined optical potentials, one obtains absolute, two-particle transfer differential cross sections which provide an overall account of the data within experimental errors. One of the first results connected with such quantitative studies of pairing correlations in nuclei is the observation of phonon mediated pairi…
The $α$ ($^4$He) - clustering structure is a common phenomenon in light nuclei due to the decreasing contribution of mean field in few-body system. In this work we presented calculations of giant dipole resonance (GDR) excitations for two non $α$-conjugate light nuclei, namely $^{6}$Li and $^{9}$Be, within a framework of an extended quantum molecular dynamics model. For $^{6}$Li, we investigated the GDR spectra from the two-body clustering structure with $α$ + deuteron as well as the three-body structure with $α$ + $n$ + $p$, and found that the major $α$-clustering contribution on the GDR peak…
Resonance is a general phenomenon which can happen in classic or quantum systems. An unbound many-body quantum system can undergo a self-resonant process. It has long been a challenge how to describe unbound many-body quantum systems in resonances. In this paper, we develop a novel first-principles method that is capable of describing resonant quantum systems. We exploit, for the first time, the advanced in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) in the complex-energy Gamow-Berggren representation with resonance and non-resonant continuum. The ab initio Gamow IMSRG has broad applicatio…
We investigate the possibility that some nuclei show density distributions with a depletion in the center, a semi-bubble structure, by using a Hartree-Fock plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer approach. We separately study the proton, neutron and matter distributions in 37 spherical nuclei mainly in the $s - d$ shell region. We found a relation between the semi-bubble structure and the energy splitting of spin-orbit partner single particle levels. The presence of semi-bubble structure reduces this splitting, and we study its consequences on the excitation spectrum of the nuclei under investigation b…
Gamow-Teller (GT) states in N=Z nuclei with the mass number A from 48 to 64 are studied by using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov + quasi-particle random phase approximation (HFB+QRPA) with Skyrme interactions. The isoscalar spin-triplet (T=0,S=1) pairing interaction is taken into account in QRPA calculations. It is found in the context of SU(4) symmetry in the spin-isospin space that the GT strength of lower energy excitations is largely enhanced by the T=0 pairing interaction which works cooperatively with the T=1 pairing interaction in the ground state. A two-peaked structure observed recently in $(…
A systematic study of the ground state properties of the entire chains of even even neutron magic nuclei represented by isotones of traditional neutron magic numbers N = 8, 20, 40, 50, 82 and 126 has been carried out using relativistic mean field (rmf) plus Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer (BCS) approach. Our present investigation includes deformation, binding energy, two proton separation energy, single particle energy, rms radii along with proton and neutron density profiles, etc. Several of these results are compared with the results calculated using non relativistic approach (Skyrme Hartree Fock …
General equations for one- particle Green function in non- magic nuclei have been derived where a pairing mechanism, which is analogous to the Bardeen- Cooper- Schrieffer one, has been singled out explicitely. A "refining" procedure for the phenomenological single- particle energies and pairing gaps is formulated to avoid double counting of the phonon mixing if the initial data of the problem are these phenomenological quantities. The general equations obtained have been written in the squared phonon creation amplitude approximation. This corresponds to taking quasiparticle$\otimes$phonon conf…
We study the competition between alpha-type and conventional pair condensation in the ground state of nuclei with neutrons and protons interacting via a charge-independent pairing interaction. The ground state is described by a product of two condensates, one of alpha-like quartets and the other one of pairs in excess relative to the isotope with N=Z. It is shown that this ansatz for the ground state gives very accurate pairing correlation energies for nuclei with the valence nucleons above the closed cores 16O, 40Ca and 100Sn. These results indicate that alpha-type correlations are important …
The variational principle is used to build a model which describes open shell nuclei with ground state deformations. Hartree-Fock equations are solved by using single particle wave functions whose radial parts depend on the projection of the angular momentum on the quantization axis. Pairing effects are taken into account by solving Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer equations in each step of the minimisation procedure. The Gogny D1S finite-range interaction and an extension of it that includes tensor terms are consistently used in both parts of our calculations. The model is applied to study a set of …
If neutrons are progressively added to a normal nucleus, the Pauli principle forces them into states of higher momentum. When the core becomes neutron-saturated, the nucleus expels most of the wavefunction of the last neutrons outside to form a halo, which because of its large size can have lower momentum. It is an open question how nature stabilizes such a fragile system and provides the glue needed to bind the halo neutrons to the core. Here we show that this problem is similar to that of the instability of the normal state of an electron system at zero temperature solved by Cooper, solution…
