We point out a strong influence of the pairing force on the size of the two neutron Cooper pair in $^{11}$Li, and to a lesser extent also in $^6$He. It seems that these are quite unique situations, since Cooper pair sizes of stable superfluid nuclei are very little influenced by the intensity of pairing, as recently reported. We explore the difference between $^{11}$Li and heavier superfulid nuclei, and discuss reasons for the exceptional situation in $^{11}$Li.
With realistic HFB calculations, using the D1S Gogny force, we reveal a generic behavior of concentration of small sized Cooper pairs (2-3 fm) in the surface of superfluid nuclei. This study confirms and extends previous results given in the literature that use more schematic approaches.
Cooper pair sizes are evaluated in a simple harmonic oscillator model reproducing the values of sophisticated HFB calculations. Underlying reasons for the very small sizes of 2.0-2.5 fm of Cooper pairs in the surface of nuclei are analysed. It is shown that the confining properties of the nuclear volume is the dominating effect. It is argued that for Cooper pair sizes LDA is particularly inadapted.
The phenomenon of low-temperature superconductivity is intimately associated with the condensation of weakly bound, very extended, strongly overlapping Cooper pairs, and systematic experimental studies of the associated mean square radius (coherence length) have been made. While the extension of BCS theory to the atomic nucleus has been successful beyond expectation, to our knowledge, no measurement of the nuclear coherence length (expected to be much larger than nuclear dimensions) has been reported in the literature. Recent studies of Cooper pair transfer across a Josephson-like junction, tr…
For the low energy Standard Model neutrino-matter interactions, we calculate neutrino pair ($ν\barν$) emissivites in superfluid quark matter. Just below the critical temperature, Cooper pairs continuously break and recombine, resulting in the emission of $ν\bar ν$ pairs with a rate that greatly exceeds the standard quark modified Urca and bremsstrahlung rates. At the same baryon density in baryonic and quark matter, the ratio of baryon to quark $ν\barν$ emissivites lies in the range 2-5 for the densities of interest in the long-term cooling of solar mass compact stars. We also find that in mat…
A system of equations is obtained for the Cooper gap in nuclei. The system takes two mechanisms of superfluidity into account in an approximation quadratic in the phonon- production amplitude : a Bardeen- Cooper- Schrieffer (BCS) type mechanism and a quasiparticle- phonon mechanism. These equations are solved for 120 Sn in a realistic approximation. If the simple procedures proposed are used to determine the new particle- particle interaction and to estimate the average effect, then the contribution of the quasiparticle- phonon mechanism to the observed width of the pairing gap is 26% and the …
A brief review is given of the current state of the problem of neutrino pair emission through neutral weak currents caused by the Cooper pairs breaking and formation (PBF) in superfluid baryon matter at thermal equilibrium. The cases of singlet-state pairing with isotropic superfluid gap and spin-triplet pairing with anisotropic gap are analyzed with allowance for the anomalous weak interactions caused by superfluidity. It is shown that taking into account the anomalous weak interactions in both the vector and axial channels is very important for a correct description of neutrino energy losses…
Asymptotic form of neutron Cooper pair penetrating to the exterior of nuclear surface is investigated with the Bogoliubov theory for the superfluid Fermions. Based on a two-particle Schrödinger equation governing the Cooper pair wave function and systematic studies for both weakly bound and stable nuclei, the Cooper pair is shown to be spatially correlated even in the asymptotic large distance limit, and the penetration length of the pair condensate is revealed to be universally governed by the two-neutron separation energy $S_{2n}$ and the di-neutron mass $2m$.
Josephson-like junctions, transiently established in heavy ion collisions between superfluid nuclei, few MeV below the Coulomb barrier, allow for the back and forth transfer of a nuclear Cooper pair of effectively charged nucleons and thus the emission of $γ$-rays. The second order DWBA $T$-matrix formulation of single Cooper pair alternating current is shown to contain the gauge phases and gauge rotational frequencies as required by the Josephson (ac) effect, in keeping with the derivation of the transfer (tunneling) Hamiltonian in a gauge invariant representation. We describe the emergence o…
Superfluidity in fermionic systems originates from pairing of fermions, and Bose condensation of these so-called Cooper pairs. The Cooper pairs are usually made of fermions of different species; for example in superconductors they are pairs of electrons with opposite spins. Thus the most favorable situation for pairing and superfluidity is when the two species of fermions that form pairs have the same density. This paper studies the possible superfluid states when the two pairing species have different densities, and show that the resultant states have remarkable similarities to the phases of …
The fermion Cooper pairing with unequal masses is investigated in a standard field theory approach. We derived the superfluid density and Meissner mass squared of the U(1) gauge field in a general two species model and found that the often used proportional relation between the two quantities is broken down when the fermion masses are unequal. In weak coupling region, the superfluid density is always negative but the Meissner mass squared becomes mostly positive when the mass ratio between the pairing fermions is large enough. We established a proper momentum configuration of the LOFF pairing …

In cold compact stars, Cooper pairing between fermions in dense matter leads to the formation of a gap in their excitation spectrum and typically exponentially suppresses transport properties. However, we show here that weak Urca reactions become strongly enhanced and approach their ungapped level when the star undergoes density oscillations of sufficiently large amplitude. We study both the neutrino emissivity and the bulk viscosity due to direct Urca processes in hadronic, hyperonic and quark matter and discuss different superfluid and superconducting pairing patterns.
We investigate color superfluidity and trimer formation in resonantly interacting SU(3) Fermi gases with a finite interaction range. The finite range is crucial to avoid the Thomas collapse and treat the Efimov effect occurring in this system. Using the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) equation with medium effects, we show the effects of the atomic Fermi distribution on the Efimov trimer energy at finite temperature. We show the critical temperature of color superfluidity within the non-selfconsistent $T$-matrix approximation (TMA). In this way, we can provide a first insight into the phase di…
Neutrino emission in processes of breaking and formation of nucleon Cooper pairs is calculated in the framework of the Larkin-Migdal and the Leggett approaches to the description of superfluid Fermi liquids at finite temperatures. We explain peculiarities of both approaches and explicitly demonstrate that they lead to the same expression for the emissivity in pair breaking and formation processes.
A finite unbound system which is equilibrium in one reference frame is in general nonequilibrium in another frame. This is a consequence of the relative character of the time synchronization in the relativistic physics. This puzzle was a prime motivation of the Cooper--Frye approach to the freeze-out in relativistic hydrodynamics. Solution of the puzzle reveals that the Cooper--Frye recipe is far not a unique phenomenological method that meets requirements of energy-momentum conservation. Alternative freeze-out recipes are considered and discussed.
At temperatures below the critical temperature of superfluid phase transition baryonic matter emits neutrinos by breaking and recombination of Cooper pairs formed in the condensate. The strong interactions in the nuclear medium modify the weak interaction vertices and the associated neutrino loss rates. We study these modifications non-perturbatively by summing infinite series of particle-hole loops in the S-wave superfluid neutron matter. The pairing and particle-hole interactions in neutron matter are described in the framework of the BCS and Fermi-liquid theories derived from microscopic in…
Neutrino emission in processes of breaking and formation of neutron and proton Cooper pairs is calculated within the Larkin-Migdal-Leggett approach for a superfluid Fermi liquid. We demonstrate explicitly that the Fermi-liquid renormalization respects the Ward identity and assures the weak vector current conservation. The systematic expansion of the emissivities for small temperatures and nucleon Fermi velocity, v_{F,i}, i=n,p, is performed. Both neutron and proton processes are mainly controlled by the axial-vector current contributions, which are not strongly changed in the superfluid matter…
We present an ab initio determination of spin responses of the unitary Fermi gas, based on finite temperature quantum Monte Carlo calculations and the Kubo linear-response formalism. We determine the temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility and the spin conductivity. We show that both quantities exhibit suppression above the critical temperature of the superfluid to normal phase transition due to presence of the Cooper pairs. The spin diffusion transport coefficient does not display the existence of a minimum in the vicinity of the critical temperature and it drops to very low values …
We non-perturbatively study pairing in the high-temperature regime of polarized unitary two-component Fermi gases by extracting the pair-momentum distribution and shot-noise correlations. Whereas the pair-momentum distribution allows us to analyze the propagation of pairs composed of one spin-up and one spin-down fermion, shot-noise correlations provide us with a tomographic insight into pairing correlations around the Fermi surfaces associated with the two species. Assuming that the dominant pairing patterns right above the superfluid transition also govern the formation of condensates in the…
A possibility of the condensation of excitations with a non-zero momentum in rectilinearly moving and rotating superfluid bosonic and fermionic (with Cooper pairing) media is considered in terms of a phenomenological order-parameter functional at zero and non-zero temperature. The results might be applicable to the description of bosonic systems like superfluid $^4$He, ultracold atomic Bose gases, charged pion and kaon condensates in rotating neutron stars, and various superconducting fermionic systems with pairing, like proton and color-superconducting components in compact stars, metallic su…
We theoretically investigate Raman photoassociation of a degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of atoms and the subsequent prospect for anomalous (Cooper) pairing between atoms and molecules. Stable fermionic molecules are created via free-bound-bound stimulated Raman adiabatic passage which, in contrast to purely bosonic systems, can occur in spite of collisions. With the leftover atomic condensate to enhance intrafermion interactions, the superfluid transition to atom-molecule Cooper pairs occurs at a temperature that is roughly an order of magnitude below what is currently feasible.
