With XML becoming a standard for business information representation and exchange, stor-ing, indexing, and querying XML documents have rapidly become major issues in database research. In this context, query processing and optimization are primordial, native-XML data-bases not being mature yet. Data structures such as indices, which help enhance performances substantially, are extensively researched, especially since XML data bear numerous specifici-ties with respect to relational data. In this paper, we survey state-of-the-art XML indices and discuss the main issues, tradeoffs and future trends in XML indexing. We also present an in-dex that we specifically designed for the particular architecture of XML data warehouses.
With the increasing popularity of XML data and a great need for a database management system able to store, retrieve and manipulate XML-based data in an efficient manner, database research communities and software industries have tried to respond to this requirement. XML-enabled database and native XML database are two approaches that have been proposed to address this challenge. These two approaches are a legacy database systems which are extended to store, retrieve and manipulate XML-based data. The major objective of this paper is to explore and compare between the two approaches and reach …
We study the applicability of XML path summaries in the context of current-day XML databases. We find that summaries provide an excellent basis for optimizing data access methods, which furthermore mixes very well with path-partitioned stores. We provide practical algorithms for building and exploiting summaries, and prove its benefits through extensive experiments.
In this article, we describe the XML storage system used in the WebContent project. We begin by advocating the use of an XML database in order to store WebContent documents, and we present two different ways of storing and querying these documents : the use of a centralized XML database and the use of a P2P XML database.
Storing XML documents in a relational database is a promising solution because relational databases are mature and scale very well and they have the advantages that in a relational database XML data and structured data can coexist making it possible to build application that involve both kinds of data with little extra effort . In this paper, we propose an algorithm schema named XRecursive that translates XML documents to relational database according to the proposed storing structure. The steps and algorithm are given in details to describe how to use the storing structure to storage and quer…
In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML …
A lot of advances in the processing of XML data have been proposed in last two decades. There were many approaches focused on the efficient processing of twig pattern queries (TPQ). However, including the TPQ into an XQuery compiler is not a straightforward task and current XML DBMSs process XQueries without any TPQ detection. In this paper, we demonstrate our prototype of a native XML DBMS called RadegastXDB that uses a TPQ detection to accelerate structural XQueries. Such a detection allows us to utilize state-of-the-art TPQ processing algorithms. Our experiments show that, for the structura…
CERN's (European Organization for Nuclear Research) WISDOM project uses XML for the replication of data between different data repositories in a heterogeneous operating system environment. For exchanging data from Web-resident databases, the data needs to be transformed into XML and back to the database format. Many different approaches are employed to do this transformation. This paper addresses issues that make this job more efficient and robust than existing approaches. It incorporates the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) XML Schema specification in the database-XML relationship. Incorporati…
We study a collection of heterogeneous XML databases maintaining similar and related information, exchanging data via a peer to peer overlay network. In this setting, a mediated global schema is unrealistic. Yet, users/applications wish to query the databases via one peer using its schema. We have recently developed HepToX, a P2P Heterogeneous XML database system. A key idea is that whenever a peer enters the system, it establishes an acquaintance with a small number of peer databases, possibly with different schema. The peer administrator provides correspondences between the local schema and …
As XML becomes ubiquitous and XML storage and processing becomes more efficient, the range of use cases for these technologies widens daily. One promising area is the integration of XML and data warehouses, where an XML-native database stores multidimensional data and processes OLAP queries written in the XQuery interrogation language. This paper explores issues arising in the implementation of such a data warehouse. We first compare approaches for multidimensional data modelling in XML, then describe how typical OLAP queries on these models can be expressed in XQuery. We then show how, regard…
Today's database is associated with interoperability between different domains and applications. This consequently results in the importance of data portability in database. XML format fits the requirements and it has been increasingly used for serving applications across different domains and purposes. However, querying XML document effectively and efficiently is still a challenging issue. This paper discusses query processing issues on XML and reviews proposed solutions for querying XML databases by various authors.
There is considerable amount of sensitive XML data stored in relational databases. It is a challenge to enforce node level fine-grained authorization policies for XML data stored in relational databases which typically support table and column level access control. Moreover, it is common to have conflicting authorization policies over the hierarchical nested structure of XML data. There are a couple of XML access control models for relational XML databases proposed in the literature. However, to our best knowledge, none of them discussed handling authorization conflicts with conditions in the …
In this paper, we proposed a new technique for backing up and restoring different Database Management Systems (DBMS). The technique is enabling to backup and restore a part of or the whole database using a unified interface using ASP.NET and XML technologies. It presents a Web Solution allowing the administrators to do their jobs from everywhere, locally or remotely. To show the importance of our solution, we have taken two case studies, oracle 11g and SQL Server 2008.
To date, most of the XML native databases (DB) flexible querying systems are based on exploiting the tree structure of their semi structured data (SSD). However, it becomes important to test the efficiency of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) formalism for this type of data since it has been proved a great performance in the field of information retrieval (IR). So, the IR in XML databases based on FCA is mainly based on the use of the lattice structure. Each concept of this lattice can be interpreted as a pair (response, query). In this work, we provide a new flexible modeling of XML DB based on f…
In this paper, we first define a logical theory representing an XML database supporting XPath as query language and XUpdate as modification language. We then extend our theory with predicates allowing us to specify the security policy protecting the database. The security policy includes rules addressing the read and write privileges. We propose axioms to derive the database view each user is permitted to see. We also propose axioms to derive the new database content after an update.
We define XPathLog as a Datalog-style extension of XPath. XPathLog provides a clear, declarative language for querying and manipulating XML whose perspectives are especially in XML data integration. In our characterization, the formal semantics is defined wrt. an edge-labeled graph-based model which covers the XML data model. We give a complete, logic-based characterization of XML data and the main language concept for XML, XPath. XPath-Logic extends the XPath language with variable bindings and embeds it into first-order logic. XPathLog is then the Horn fragment of XPath-Logic, providing a Da…
The aim of this article is to present an overview of the major families of state-of-the-art data-base benchmarks, namely: relational benchmarks, object and object-relational benchmarks, XML benchmarks, and decision-support benchmarks, and to discuss the issues, tradeoffs and future trends in database benchmarking. We particularly focus on XML and decision-support benchmarks, which are currently the most innovative tools that are developed in this area.
In this paper, we present the guidelines for an XML-based approach for the sociological study of Web data such as the analysis of mailing lists or databases available online. The use of an XML warehouse is a flexible solution for storing and processing this kind of data. We propose an implemented solution and show possible applications with our case study of profiles of experts involved in W3C standard-setting activity. We illustrate the sociological use of semi-structured databases by presenting our XML Schema for mailing-list warehousing. An XML Schema allows many adjunctions or crossings of…
In contrast to XML query languages as e.g. XPath which require knowledge on the query language as well as on the document structure, keyword search is open to anybody. As the size of XML sources grows rapidly, the need for efficient search indices on XML data that support keyword search increases. In this paper, we present an approach of XML keyword search which is based on the DAG of the XML data, where repeated substructures are considered only once, and therefore, have to be searched only once. As our performance evaluation shows, this DAG-based extension of the set intersection search algo…
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit heterogeneous data from multiple sources. However, XML-native database systems currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to research ways to optimize them. In this paper, we propose a new index that is specifically adapted to the multidimensional architecture of XML warehouses and eliminates join operations, while preserving the information contained in the original warehouse. A theoretical study and experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of our index, even when queries are compl…
XML is becoming the most relevant new standard for data representation and exchange on the WWW. Novel languages for extracting and restructuring the XML content have been proposed, some in the tradition of database query languages (i.e. SQL, OQL), others more closely inspired by XML. No standard for XML query language has yet been decided, but the discussion is ongoing within the World Wide Web Consortium and within many academic institutions and Internet-related major companies. We present a comparison of five, representative query languages for XML, highlighting their common features and dif…
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit complex data. However, native-XML database management systems (DBMSs) currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to research for ways to optimize them. In this paper, we propose a new join index that is specifically adapted to the multidimensional architecture of XML warehouses. It eliminates join operations while preserving the information contained in the original warehouse. A theoretical study and experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of our join index. They also show that nat…
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit heterogeneous data from multiple sources. However, XML-native database systems currently suffer from limited performances in terms of manageable data volume and response time for complex analytical queries. Fragmenting and distributing XML data warehouses (e.g., on data grids) allow to address both these issues. In this paper, we work on XML warehouse fragmentation. In relational data warehouses, several studies recommend the use of derived horizontal fragmentation. Hence, we propose to adapt it to the…
With the emergence of XML as a standard for representing business data, new decision support applications are being developed. These XML data warehouses aim at supporting On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) operations that manipulate irregular XML data. To ensure feasibility of these new tools, important performance issues must be addressed. Performance is customarily assessed with the help of benchmarks. However, decision support benchmarks do not currently support XML features. In this paper, we introduce the XML Warehouse Benchmark (XWeB), which aims at filling this gap. XWeB derives from …
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit complex data. However, native XML database management systems currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to design strategies to optimize them. In this paper, we propose an automatic strategy for the selection of XML materialized views that exploits a data mining technique, more precisely the clustering of the query workload. To validate our strategy, we implemented an XML warehouse modeled along the XCube specifications. We executed a workload of XQuery decision-support queries on this wa…
A key goal of bioinformatics is to create database systems and software platforms capable of storing and analysing large sets of biological data. Hundreds of biological databases are now available and provide access to huge amount of biological data. SGD, Yeastract, CYGD-MIPS, BioGrid and PhosphoGrid are five of the most visited databases by the yeast community. These sources provide complementary data on biological entities. Biologists are brought systematically to query these data sources in order to analyse the results of their experiments. Because of the heterogeneity of these sources, que…
With the multiplication of XML data sources, many XML data warehouse models have been proposed to handle data heterogeneity and complexity in a way relational data warehouses fail to achieve. However, XML-native database systems currently suffer from limited performances, both in terms of manageable data volume and response time. Fragmentation helps address both these issues. Derived horizontal fragmentation is typically used in relational data warehouses and can definitely be adapted to the XML context. However, the number of fragments produced by classical algorithms is difficult to control.…
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit complex data. However, native-XML database management systems (DBMSs) currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to research for ways to optimize them. In this chapter, we present two such techniques. First, we propose a join index that is specifically adapted to the multidimensional architecture of XML warehouses. It eliminates join operations while preserving the information contained in the original warehouse. Second, we present a strategy for selecting XML materialized views by cluster…
We describe a meta-querying system for databases containing queries in addition to ordinary data. In the context of such databases, a meta-query is a query about queries. Representing stored queries in XML, and using the standard XML manipulation language XSLT as a sublanguage, we show that just a few features need to be added to SQL to turn it into a fully-fledged meta-query language. The good news is that these features can be directly supported by extensible database technology.
Data validation is becoming more and more important with the ever-growing amount of data being consumed and transmitted by systems over the Internet. It is important to ensure that the data being sent is valid as it may contain entry errors, which may be consumed by different systems causing further errors. XML has become the defacto standard for data transfer. The XML Schema Definition language (XSD) was created to help XML structural validation and provide a schema for data type restrictions, however it does not allow for more complex situations. In this article we introduce a way to provide…
In a data warehousing process, the data preparation phase is crucial. Mastering this phase allows substantial gains in terms of time and performance when performing a multidimensional analysis or using data mining algorithms. Furthermore, a data warehouse can require external data. The web is a prevalent data source in this context, but the data broadcasted on this medium are very heterogeneous. We propose in this paper a UML conceptual model for a complex object representing a superclass of any useful data source (databases, plain texts, HTML and XML documents, images, sounds, video clips...)…
This paper proposes a set of tools to help dealing with XML database evolution. It aims at establishing a multi-system environment where a global integrated system works in harmony with some local original ones, allowing data translation in both directions and, thus, activities on both levels. To deal with schemas, we propose an algorithm that computes a mapping capable of obtaining a global schema which is a conservative extension of original local schemas. The role of the obtained mapping is then twofold: it ensures schema evolution, via composition and inversion, and it guides the construct…

Schema Matching, i.e. the process of discovering semantic correspondences between concepts adopted in different data source schemas, has been a key topic in Database and Artificial Intelligence research areas for many years. In the past, it was largely investigated especially for classical database models (e.g., E/R schemas, relational databases, etc.). However, in the latest years, the widespread adoption of XML in the most disparate application fields pushed a growing number of researchers to design XML-specific Schema Matching approaches, called XML Matchers, aiming at finding semantic matc…
The probabilistic threshold query is one of the most common queries in uncertain databases, where a result satisfying the query must be also with probability meeting the threshold requirement. In this paper, we investigate probabilistic threshold keyword queries (PrTKQ) over XML data, which is not studied before. We first introduce the notion of quasi-SLCA and use it to represent results for a PrTKQ with the consideration of possible world semantics. Then we design a probabilistic inverted (PI) index that can be used to quickly return the qualified answers and filter out the unqualified ones b…
XML data sources are more and more gaining popularity in the context of a wide family of Business Intelligence (BI) and On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) applications, due to the amenities of XML in representing and managing semi-structured and complex multidimensional data. As a consequence, many XML data warehouse models have been proposed during past years in order to handle hetero-geneity and complexity of multidimensional data in a way traditional relational data warehouse approaches fail to achieve. However, XML-native database systems currently suffer from limited performance, both i…
OpenAIRE, the Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe, comprises a database of all EC FP7 and H2020 funded research projects, including metadata of their results (publications and datasets). These data are stored in an HBase NoSQL database, post-processed, and exposed as HTML for human consumption, and as XML through a web service interface. As an intermediate format to facilitate statistical computations, CSV is generated internally. To interlink the OpenAIRE data with related data on the Web, we aim at exporting them as Linked Open Data (LOD). The LOD export is required to integrat…
Linked Open Data (LOD) has been proliferated over various domains, however, there are still lots of open data in various format other than RDF, a standard data description framework in LOD. These open data can also be connected to entities in LOD when they are associated with URIs. Document-centric XML data are such open data that are connected with entities in LOD as supplemental documents for these entities, and to convert these XML data into RDF requires various techniques such as information extraction, ontology design and ontology mapping with human prior knowledge. To utilize document-ce…
XML has emerged as the standard for representing and exchanging data on the World Wide Web. It is critical to have efficient mechanisms to store and query XML data to exploit the full power of this new technology. Several researchers have proposed to use relational databases to store and query XML data. While several algorithms of schema mapping and query mapping have been proposed, the problem of mapping XML data to relational data, i.e., mapping an XML INSERT statement to a sequence of SQL INSERT statements, has not been addressed thoroughly in the literature. In this paper, we propose an ef…
In a data warehousing process, mastering the data preparation phase allows substantial gains in terms of time and performance when performing multidimensional analysis or using data mining algorithms. Furthermore, a data warehouse can require external data. The web is a prevalent data source in this context. In this paper, we propose a modeling process for integrating diverse and heterogeneous (so-called multiform) data into a unified format. Furthermore, the very schema definition provides first-rate metadata in our data warehousing context. At the conceptual level, a complex object is repres…
A practical and promising approach to parallelizing XPath queries was proposed by Bordawekar et al. in 2009, which enables parallelization on top of existing XML database engines. Although they experimentally demonstrated the speedup by their approach, their practice has already been out of date because the software environment has largely changed with the capability of XQuery processing. In this work, we implement their approach in two ways on top of a state-of-the-art XML database engine and experimentally demonstrate that our implementations can bring significant speedup on a commodity serv…
This document is an white paper about how to connect reverse engineering and programing skills to extract data from a proprietary implementation of a database system to build EML-Tools for data format conversion into raw data. This article shows how to access data of a source software system without any interface for data conversion. We discuss how raw data can be transfered into structural format by using XML or any other custom designed software solution. For demonstration purposes only, we will use a CRM system called Harmony(r) by Harmony(r) Software AG, the programing language Python and …
Database system architectures are undergoing revolutionary changes. Algorithms and data are being unified by integrating programming languages with the database system. This gives an extensible object-relational system where non-procedural relational operators manipulate object sets. Coupled with this, each DBMS is now a web service. This has huge implications for how we structure applications. DBMSs are now object containers. Queues are the first objects to be added. These queues are the basis for transaction processing and workflow applica-tions. Future workflow systems are likely to be buil…
While many applications export data in hierarchical formats like XML and JSON, it is often necessary to convert such hierarchical documents to a relational representation. This paper presents a novel programming-by-example approach, and its implementation in a tool called Mitra, for automatically migrating tree-structured documents to relational tables. We have evaluated the proposed technique using two sets of experiments. In the first experiment, we used Mitra to automate 98 data transformation tasks collected from StackOverflow. Our method can generate the desired program for 94% of these b…
We present the design and the status of the database for detector description parameters in ATLAS experiment. The ATLAS Primary Numbers are the parameters defining the detector geometry and digitization in simulations, as well as certain reconstruction parameters. Since the detailed ATLAS detector description needs more than 10,000 such parameters, a preferred solution is to have a single verified source for all these data. The database stores the data dictionary for each parameter collection object, providing schema evolution support for object-based retrieval of parameters. The same Primary …
Considering relational databases having powerful capabilities in handling security, user authentication, query optimization, etc., several commercial and academic frameworks reuse relational databases to store and query semi-structured data (e.g., XML, JSON) or graph data (e.g., RDF, property graph). However, these works concentrate on managing one of the above data models with RDBMSs. That is, it does not exploit the underlying tools to automatically generate the relational schema for storing multi-model data. In this demonstration, we present a novel reinforcement learning-based tool called …
Database engines have historically absorbed many of the innovations in data processing, adding features to process graph data, XML, object oriented, and text among many others. In this paper, we make the case that it is time to do the same for AI -- but with a twist! While existing approaches have tried to achieve this by integrating databases with external ML tools, in this paper we claim that achieving a truly AI-centric database requires moving the DBMS engine, at its core, from a relational to a tensor abstraction. This allows us to: (1) support multi-modal data processing such as images, …
Scientific endeavors such as large astronomical surveys generate databases on the terabyte scale. These, usually multidimensional databases must be visualized and mined in order to find interesting objects or to extract meaningful and qualitatively new relationships. Many statistical algorithms required for these tasks run reasonably fast when operating on small sets of in-memory data, but take noticeable performance hits when operating on large databases that do not fit into memory. We utilize new software technologies to develop and evaluate fast multidimensional indexing schemes that inhere…
We discuss long-term preservation of and access to relational databases. The focus is on national archives and science data archives which have to ingest and integrate data from a broad spectrum of vendor-specific relational database management systems (RDBMS). Furthermore, we present our solution SIARD which analyzes and extracts data and data logic from almost any RDBMS. It enables, to a reasonable level of authenticity, complete detachment of databases from their vendor-specific environment. The user can add archival descriptive metadata according to a customizable schema. A SIARD database …
"Clustering" the significance and application of this technique is spread over various fields. Clustering is an unsupervised process in data mining, that is why the proper evaluation of the results and measuring the compactness and separability of the clusters are important issues. The procedure of evaluating the results of a clustering algorithm is known as cluster validity measure. Different types of indexes are used to solve different types of problems and indices selection depends on the kind of available data. This paper first proposes Canonical PSO based K-means clustering algorithm and al…
Metadata of scientific articles such as title, abstract, keywords or index terms, body text, conclusion, reference and others play a decisive role in collecting, managing and storing academic data in scientific databases, academic journals and digital libraries. An accurate extraction of these kinds of data from scientific papers is crucial to organize and retrieve important scientific information for researchers as well as librarians. Research social network systems and academic digital library systems provide academic data extracting, organizing and retrieving services. Mostly these types of…
ASP.NET web applications typically employ server controls to provide dynamic web pages, and data-bound server controls to display and maintain database data. Most developers use default properties of ASP.NET server controls when developing web applications, which allows for rapid development of workable applications. However, creating a high-performance, multi-user, and scalable web application requires enhancement of server controls using custom-made code. In this empirical study we evaluate the impact of various technical approaches for paging and sorting functionality in data-driven ASP.NET…
Traditional indexing techniques commonly employed in da\-ta\-ba\-se systems perform poorly on multidimensional array scientific data. Bitmap indices are widely used in commercial databases for processing complex queries, due to their effective use of bit-wise operations and space-efficiency. However, bitmap indices apply natively to relational or linearized datasets, which is especially notable in binned or compressed indices. We propose a new method for multidimensional array indexing that overcomes the dimensionality-induced inefficiencies. The hierarchical indexing method is based on $n$-di…
