The aim of this article is to present an overview of the major families of state-of-the-art data-base benchmarks, namely: relational benchmarks, object and object-relational benchmarks, XML benchmarks, and decision-support benchmarks, and to discuss the issues, tradeoffs and future trends in database benchmarking. We particularly focus on XML and decision-support benchmarks, which are currently the most innovative tools that are developed in this area.
With the increasing popularity of XML data and a great need for a database management system able to store, retrieve and manipulate XML-based data in an efficient manner, database research communities and software industries have tried to respond to this requirement. XML-enabled database and native XML database are two approaches that have been proposed to address this challenge. These two approaches are a legacy database systems which are extended to store, retrieve and manipulate XML-based data. The major objective of this paper is to explore and compare between the two approaches and reach …
We study the applicability of XML path summaries in the context of current-day XML databases. We find that summaries provide an excellent basis for optimizing data access methods, which furthermore mixes very well with path-partitioned stores. We provide practical algorithms for building and exploiting summaries, and prove its benefits through extensive experiments.
With XML becoming a standard for business information representation and exchange, stor-ing, indexing, and querying XML documents have rapidly become major issues in database research. In this context, query processing and optimization are primordial, native-XML data-bases not being mature yet. Data structures such as indices, which help enhance performances substantially, are extensively researched, especially since XML data bear numerous specifici-ties with respect to relational data. In this paper, we survey state-of-the-art XML indices and discuss the main issues, tradeoffs and future tren…
In this article, we describe the XML storage system used in the WebContent project. We begin by advocating the use of an XML database in order to store WebContent documents, and we present two different ways of storing and querying these documents : the use of a centralized XML database and the use of a P2P XML database.
Storing XML documents in a relational database is a promising solution because relational databases are mature and scale very well and they have the advantages that in a relational database XML data and structured data can coexist making it possible to build application that involve both kinds of data with little extra effort . In this paper, we propose an algorithm schema named XRecursive that translates XML documents to relational database according to the proposed storing structure. The steps and algorithm are given in details to describe how to use the storing structure to storage and quer…
In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML …
A lot of advances in the processing of XML data have been proposed in last two decades. There were many approaches focused on the efficient processing of twig pattern queries (TPQ). However, including the TPQ into an XQuery compiler is not a straightforward task and current XML DBMSs process XQueries without any TPQ detection. In this paper, we demonstrate our prototype of a native XML DBMS called RadegastXDB that uses a TPQ detection to accelerate structural XQueries. Such a detection allows us to utilize state-of-the-art TPQ processing algorithms. Our experiments show that, for the structura…
CERN's (European Organization for Nuclear Research) WISDOM project uses XML for the replication of data between different data repositories in a heterogeneous operating system environment. For exchanging data from Web-resident databases, the data needs to be transformed into XML and back to the database format. Many different approaches are employed to do this transformation. This paper addresses issues that make this job more efficient and robust than existing approaches. It incorporates the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) XML Schema specification in the database-XML relationship. Incorporati…
We study a collection of heterogeneous XML databases maintaining similar and related information, exchanging data via a peer to peer overlay network. In this setting, a mediated global schema is unrealistic. Yet, users/applications wish to query the databases via one peer using its schema. We have recently developed HepToX, a P2P Heterogeneous XML database system. A key idea is that whenever a peer enters the system, it establishes an acquaintance with a small number of peer databases, possibly with different schema. The peer administrator provides correspondences between the local schema and …
As XML becomes ubiquitous and XML storage and processing becomes more efficient, the range of use cases for these technologies widens daily. One promising area is the integration of XML and data warehouses, where an XML-native database stores multidimensional data and processes OLAP queries written in the XQuery interrogation language. This paper explores issues arising in the implementation of such a data warehouse. We first compare approaches for multidimensional data modelling in XML, then describe how typical OLAP queries on these models can be expressed in XQuery. We then show how, regard…
Today's database is associated with interoperability between different domains and applications. This consequently results in the importance of data portability in database. XML format fits the requirements and it has been increasingly used for serving applications across different domains and purposes. However, querying XML document effectively and efficiently is still a challenging issue. This paper discusses query processing issues on XML and reviews proposed solutions for querying XML databases by various authors.
There is considerable amount of sensitive XML data stored in relational databases. It is a challenge to enforce node level fine-grained authorization policies for XML data stored in relational databases which typically support table and column level access control. Moreover, it is common to have conflicting authorization policies over the hierarchical nested structure of XML data. There are a couple of XML access control models for relational XML databases proposed in the literature. However, to our best knowledge, none of them discussed handling authorization conflicts with conditions in the …
In this paper, we proposed a new technique for backing up and restoring different Database Management Systems (DBMS). The technique is enabling to backup and restore a part of or the whole database using a unified interface using ASP.NET and XML technologies. It presents a Web Solution allowing the administrators to do their jobs from everywhere, locally or remotely. To show the importance of our solution, we have taken two case studies, oracle 11g and SQL Server 2008.
To date, most of the XML native databases (DB) flexible querying systems are based on exploiting the tree structure of their semi structured data (SSD). However, it becomes important to test the efficiency of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) formalism for this type of data since it has been proved a great performance in the field of information retrieval (IR). So, the IR in XML databases based on FCA is mainly based on the use of the lattice structure. Each concept of this lattice can be interpreted as a pair (response, query). In this work, we provide a new flexible modeling of XML DB based on f…
In this paper, we first define a logical theory representing an XML database supporting XPath as query language and XUpdate as modification language. We then extend our theory with predicates allowing us to specify the security policy protecting the database. The security policy includes rules addressing the read and write privileges. We propose axioms to derive the database view each user is permitted to see. We also propose axioms to derive the new database content after an update.
In this paper, we present the guidelines for an XML-based approach for the sociological study of Web data such as the analysis of mailing lists or databases available online. The use of an XML warehouse is a flexible solution for storing and processing this kind of data. We propose an implemented solution and show possible applications with our case study of profiles of experts involved in W3C standard-setting activity. We illustrate the sociological use of semi-structured databases by presenting our XML Schema for mailing-list warehousing. An XML Schema allows many adjunctions or crossings of…
With the emergence of XML as a standard for representing business data, new decision support applications are being developed. These XML data warehouses aim at supporting On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) operations that manipulate irregular XML data. To ensure feasibility of these new tools, important performance issues must be addressed. Performance is customarily assessed with the help of benchmarks. However, decision support benchmarks do not currently support XML features. In this paper, we introduce the XML Warehouse Benchmark (XWeB), which aims at filling this gap. XWeB derives from …
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit heterogeneous data from multiple sources. However, XML-native database systems currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to research ways to optimize them. In this paper, we propose a new index that is specifically adapted to the multidimensional architecture of XML warehouses and eliminates join operations, while preserving the information contained in the original warehouse. A theoretical study and experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of our index, even when queries are compl…
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit complex data. However, native XML database management systems currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to design strategies to optimize them. In this paper, we propose an automatic strategy for the selection of XML materialized views that exploits a data mining technique, more precisely the clustering of the query workload. To validate our strategy, we implemented an XML warehouse modeled along the XCube specifications. We executed a workload of XQuery decision-support queries on this wa…
A key goal of bioinformatics is to create database systems and software platforms capable of storing and analysing large sets of biological data. Hundreds of biological databases are now available and provide access to huge amount of biological data. SGD, Yeastract, CYGD-MIPS, BioGrid and PhosphoGrid are five of the most visited databases by the yeast community. These sources provide complementary data on biological entities. Biologists are brought systematically to query these data sources in order to analyse the results of their experiments. Because of the heterogeneity of these sources, que…
Business Intelligence plays an important role in decision making. Based on data warehouses and Online Analytical Processing, a business intelligence tool can be used to analyze complex data. Still, summarizability issues in data warehouses cause ineffective analyses that may become critical problems to businesses. To settle this issue, many researchers have studied and proposed various solutions, both in relational and XML data warehouses. However, they find difficulty in evaluating the performance of their proposals since the available benchmarks lack complex hierarchies. In order to contribu…
With the multiplication of XML data sources, many XML data warehouse models have been proposed to handle data heterogeneity and complexity in a way relational data warehouses fail to achieve. However, XML-native database systems currently suffer from limited performances, both in terms of manageable data volume and response time. Fragmentation helps address both these issues. Derived horizontal fragmentation is typically used in relational data warehouses and can definitely be adapted to the XML context. However, the number of fragments produced by classical algorithms is difficult to control.…
XML data warehouses form an interesting basis for decision-support applications that exploit complex data. However, native-XML database management systems (DBMSs) currently bear limited performances and it is necessary to research for ways to optimize them. In this chapter, we present two such techniques. First, we propose a join index that is specifically adapted to the multidimensional architecture of XML warehouses. It eliminates join operations while preserving the information contained in the original warehouse. Second, we present a strategy for selecting XML materialized views by cluster…
We describe a meta-querying system for databases containing queries in addition to ordinary data. In the context of such databases, a meta-query is a query about queries. Representing stored queries in XML, and using the standard XML manipulation language XSLT as a sublanguage, we show that just a few features need to be added to SQL to turn it into a fully-fledged meta-query language. The good news is that these features can be directly supported by extensible database technology.

Schema Matching, i.e. the process of discovering semantic correspondences between concepts adopted in different data source schemas, has been a key topic in Database and Artificial Intelligence research areas for many years. In the past, it was largely investigated especially for classical database models (e.g., E/R schemas, relational databases, etc.). However, in the latest years, the widespread adoption of XML in the most disparate application fields pushed a growing number of researchers to design XML-specific Schema Matching approaches, called XML Matchers, aiming at finding semantic matc…
OpenAIRE, the Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe, comprises a database of all EC FP7 and H2020 funded research projects, including metadata of their results (publications and datasets). These data are stored in an HBase NoSQL database, post-processed, and exposed as HTML for human consumption, and as XML through a web service interface. As an intermediate format to facilitate statistical computations, CSV is generated internally. To interlink the OpenAIRE data with related data on the Web, we aim at exporting them as Linked Open Data (LOD). The LOD export is required to integrat…
XML has emerged as the standard for representing and exchanging data on the World Wide Web. It is critical to have efficient mechanisms to store and query XML data to exploit the full power of this new technology. Several researchers have proposed to use relational databases to store and query XML data. While several algorithms of schema mapping and query mapping have been proposed, the problem of mapping XML data to relational data, i.e., mapping an XML INSERT statement to a sequence of SQL INSERT statements, has not been addressed thoroughly in the literature. In this paper, we propose an ef…
Object-centric process mining provides a set of techniques for the analysis of event data where events are associated to several objects. To store Object-centric Event Logs (OCELs), the JSON-OCEL and JSON-XML formats have been recently proposed. However, the proposed implementations of the OCEL are file-based. This means that the entire file needs to be parsed in order to apply process mining techniques, such as the discovery of object-centric process models. In this paper, we propose a database storage for the OCEL format using the MongoDB document database. Since documents in MongoDB are equ…
A practical and promising approach to parallelizing XPath queries was proposed by Bordawekar et al. in 2009, which enables parallelization on top of existing XML database engines. Although they experimentally demonstrated the speedup by their approach, their practice has already been out of date because the software environment has largely changed with the capability of XQuery processing. In this work, we implement their approach in two ways on top of a state-of-the-art XML database engine and experimentally demonstrate that our implementations can bring significant speedup on a commodity serv…
In this paper we present the functionality of a currently under development database programming methodology called ODRA (Object Database for Rapid Application development) which works fully on the object oriented principles. The database programming language is called SBQL (Stack based query language). We discuss some concepts in ODRA for e.g. the working of ODRA, how ODRA runtime environment operates, the interoperability of ODRA with .net and java .A view of ODRA's working with web services and xml. Currently the stages under development in ODRA are query optimization. So we present the pri…
In object-oriented or object-relational databases such as multimedia databases or most XML databases, access patterns are not static, i.e., applications do not always access the same objects in the same order repeatedly. However, this has been the way these databases and associated optimisation techniques like clustering have been evaluated up to now. This paper opens up research regarding this issue by proposing a dynamic object evaluation framework (DOEF) that accomplishes access pattern change by defining configurable styles of change. This preliminary prototype has been designed to be open…
Database system architectures are undergoing revolutionary changes. Algorithms and data are being unified by integrating programming languages with the database system. This gives an extensible object-relational system where non-procedural relational operators manipulate object sets. Coupled with this, each DBMS is now a web service. This has huge implications for how we structure applications. DBMSs are now object containers. Queues are the first objects to be added. These queues are the basis for transaction processing and workflow applica-tions. Future workflow systems are likely to be buil…
This paper explores the effect that changing access patterns has on the performance of database management systems. Changes in access patterns play an important role in determining the efficiency of key performance optimization techniques, such as dynamic clustering, prefetching, and buffer replacement. However, all existing benchmarks or evaluation frameworks produce static access patterns in which objects are always accessed in the same order repeatedly. Hence, we have proposed the Dynamic Evaluation Framework (DEF) that simulates access pattern changes using configurable styles of change. D…
While many applications export data in hierarchical formats like XML and JSON, it is often necessary to convert such hierarchical documents to a relational representation. This paper presents a novel programming-by-example approach, and its implementation in a tool called Mitra, for automatically migrating tree-structured documents to relational tables. We have evaluated the proposed technique using two sets of experiments. In the first experiment, we used Mitra to automate 98 data transformation tasks collected from StackOverflow. Our method can generate the desired program for 94% of these b…
Watermarking is a way of embedding information in digital documents. Much research has been done on techniques for watermarking relational databases and XML documents, where the process of embedding information shouldn't distort query outputs too much. Recently, techniques have been proposed to watermark some classes of relational structures preserving first-order and monadic second order queries. For relational structures whose Gaifman graphs have bounded degree, watermarking can be done preserving first-order queries. We extend this line of work and study watermarking schemes for other class…
We present in this paper a generic object-oriented benchmark (the Object Clustering Benchmark) that has been designed to evaluate the performances of clustering policies in object-oriented databases. OCB is generic because its sample database may be customized to fit the databases introduced by the main existing benchmarks (e.g., OO1). OCB's current form is clustering-oriented because of its clustering-oriented workload, but it can be easily adapted to other purposes. Lastly, OCB's code is compact and easily portable. OCB has been implemented in a real system (Texas, running on a Sun workstati…
Considering relational databases having powerful capabilities in handling security, user authentication, query optimization, etc., several commercial and academic frameworks reuse relational databases to store and query semi-structured data (e.g., XML, JSON) or graph data (e.g., RDF, property graph). However, these works concentrate on managing one of the above data models with RDBMSs. That is, it does not exploit the underlying tools to automatically generate the relational schema for storing multi-model data. In this demonstration, we present a novel reinforcement learning-based tool called …
Existing benchmarks for analytical database systems such as TPC-DS and TPC-H are designed for static reporting scenarios. The main metric of these benchmarks is the performance of running individual SQL queries over a synthetic database. In this paper, we argue that such benchmarks are not suitable for evaluating database workloads originating from interactive data exploration (IDE) systems where most queries are ad-hoc, not based on predefined reports, and built incrementally. As a main contribution, we present a novel benchmark called IDEBench that can be used to evaluate the performance of …
Database engines have historically absorbed many of the innovations in data processing, adding features to process graph data, XML, object oriented, and text among many others. In this paper, we make the case that it is time to do the same for AI -- but with a twist! While existing approaches have tried to achieve this by integrating databases with external ML tools, in this paper we claim that achieving a truly AI-centric database requires moving the DBMS engine, at its core, from a relational to a tensor abstraction. This allows us to: (1) support multi-modal data processing such as images, …

The need for performance measurement tools appeared soon after the emergence of the first Object-Oriented Database Management Systems (OODBMSs), and proved important for both designers and users (Atkinson \& Maier, 1990). Performance evaluation is useful to designers to determine elements of architecture and more generally to validate or refute hypotheses regarding the actual behavior of an OODBMS. Thus, performance evaluation is an essential component in the development process of well-designed and efficient systems. Users may also employ performance evaluation, either to compare the efficien…
In this study, we present the first results of a complete implementation of the LDBC SNB benchmark -- interactive short, interactive complex, and business intelligence -- in two native graph database systems---Neo4j and TigerGraph. In addition to thoroughly evaluating the performance of all of the 46 queries in the benchmark on four scale factors -- SF-1, SF-10, SF-100, and SF-1000 -- and three computing architectures -- on premise and in the cloud -- we also measure the bulk loading time and storage size. Our results show that TigerGraph is consistently outperforming Neo4j on the majority of …
In recent years, the increased need to house and process large volumes of data has prompted the need for distributed storage and querying systems. The growth of machine-readable RDF triples has prompted both industry and academia to develop new database systems, called NoSQL, with characteristics that differ from classical databases. Many of these systems compromise ACID properties for increased horizontal scalability and data availability. This thesis concerns the development and evaluation of a NoSQL triplestore. Triplestores are database management systems central to emerging technologies s…
We discuss long-term preservation of and access to relational databases. The focus is on national archives and science data archives which have to ingest and integrate data from a broad spectrum of vendor-specific relational database management systems (RDBMS). Furthermore, we present our solution SIARD which analyzes and extracts data and data logic from almost any RDBMS. It enables, to a reasonable level of authenticity, complete detachment of databases from their vendor-specific environment. The user can add archival descriptive metadata according to a customizable schema. A SIARD database …
Metadata of scientific articles such as title, abstract, keywords or index terms, body text, conclusion, reference and others play a decisive role in collecting, managing and storing academic data in scientific databases, academic journals and digital libraries. An accurate extraction of these kinds of data from scientific papers is crucial to organize and retrieve important scientific information for researchers as well as librarians. Research social network systems and academic digital library systems provide academic data extracting, organizing and retrieving services. Mostly these types of…
Time-series data has an increasingly growing usage in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and large-scale scientific experiments. Managing time-series data needs a storage engine that can keep up with their constantly growing volumes while providing an acceptable query latency. While traditional ACID databases favor consistency over performance, many time-series databases with novel storage engines have been developed to provide better ingestion performance and lower query latency. To understand how the unique design of a time-series database affects its performance, we design SciTS, a highly…
