Exact bounds are derived for the total energy which conform with the Kolmogorov phenomenology of turbulence. We present direct numerical simulations of reversals of the magnetic field generated by swirling flows in a spherical domain. In agreement with a recent model, we observe that coupling dipolar and quadrupolar magnetic modes by an asymmetric forcing of the flow generates field reversals. In addition, we show that this mechanism strongly depends on the value of the magnetic Prandtl number.
We compute numerically the threshold for dynamo action in Taylor-Green swirling flows. Kinematic calculations, for which the flow field is fixed to its time averaged profile, are compared to dynamical runs for which both the Navier-Stokes and the induction equations are jointly solved. The kinematic instability is found to have two branches, for all explored Reynolds numbers. The dynamical dynamo threshold follows these branches: at low Reynolds number it lies within the low branch while at high kinetic Reynolds number it is close to the high branch.

We measure the decay rates of magnetic field modes in a turbulent flow of liquid sodium below the dynamo threshold.We observe that turbulent fluctuations induce energy transfers between modes with different symmetries (dipolar and quadrupolar). We report the observation of dynamo action in the VKS experiment, i.e., the generation of magnetic field by a strongly turbulent swirling flow of liquid sodium. We report the results of three-dimensional numerical simulations of convection-driven dynamos in relatively thin rotating spherical shells that show a transition from an strong non-oscillatory dipolar magnetic field to a weaker regularly oscillating dipolar field. The transition is induced primarily by the effects a stress-free boundary condition. The variation of the inner to outer radius ratio is found to have a less important effect.

We present the first study on the amplification of magnetic fields by the turbulent dynamo in the highly subsonic regime, with Mach numbers ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $0.4$. In this review, we describe turbulent drag reduction in a variety of flows using a universal framework of energy flux. In a turbulent flow with dilute polymers and magnetic field, the kinetic energy injected at large scales cascades to the velocity field at intermediate scales, as well as to the polymers and magnetic field at all scales. Consequently, the kinetic energy flux, $ Π_u(k) $, is suppressed in comparison to the pure hydrodynamic turbulence.
