We report a high performance relative humidity (RH) microsensor by coating a few-layer graphene oxide (GO) flake over a photonic crystal (PC) cavity. Since the GO layer has a high water-activity and interacts with the evanescent cavity mode strongly, the exposure of GO-PC cavity in varied humidity levels results in significant resonant wavelength shifts, showing a slope of 0.68 nm/%RH in the range of 60%-85% RH. By interrogating the power variation of the cavity reflection, the microsensor presents an ultrahigh sensitivity exceeding 3.9 dB/%RH. Relying on the unimpeded permeation of water molecules through the GO interlayers and microscale distribution of the cavity mode, the integrated sensor has a response time less than 100 ms, which promises successful measurements of human breathing. Combining with the ease of fabrication, this high performance RH sensor has potential applications requiring optical access, device compactness, and fast dynamic response.
A wavelength spacing tunable, multiwavelength Q-switched mode-locked (QML) fiber laser in an erbium-doped fiber cavity based on graphene oxide deposited on tapered fiber is proposed by choosing the diameter and length of the taper, graphene oxide thickness and cavity dispersion, in which the wavelength spacing could be tuned by pump power. The evolutions of temporal and spectral with different pump strengths are investigated. Results show that the tunability of the multiwavelength laser can be interpreted by the bound states of QML laser resulting from a mutual interaction of dispersion, nonli…
We report Doppler-free two-photon absorption of N$_2$O at $λ$ = 4.53 $μ$m, measured by cavity ring-down spectroscopy. High power was achieved by optical self-locking of a quantum cascade laser to a linear resonator of finesse $F$ = 22730, and accurate laser detuning over a 400 MHz range was measured relative to an optical frequency comb. At a sample pressure of p = 0.13 kPa, we report a large two-photon cross-section of $σ_{13}^{(2)}$ = 8.0 $\times$ 10$^{-41}$ cm$^4$ s molecule$^{-1}$ for the $Q$(18) rovibrational transition at a resonant frequency of $ν_0$ = 66179400.8 MHz.
Cross-phase modulation instability (XPMI) is experimentally observed in a fiber ring cavity with net normal dispersion and mode-locked by long fiber taper. The taper is deposited with reduced graphene oxide, which can decrease the threshold of XPMI due to the enhanced nonlinearity realized by 8 mm evanescent field interaction length and strong mode confinement. Experimental results indicate that the phase matching conditions in two polarization directions are different, and sidebands with different intensities are generated. This phase matching condition can be satisfied even the polarization …
We demonstrate the superior performance of fluoride coated versus oxide coated mirrors in long term vacuum operation of a high power deep-ultraviolet enhancement cavity. In high vacuum ($10^{-8}$ mbar), the fluoride optics can maintain up to a record-high 10 w of stable intracavity power on one hour time scales, whereas for the oxide optics, we observe rapid degradation at lower intracavity powers with a rate that increases with power. After observing degradation in high vacuum, we can recover the fluoride and oxide optics with oxygen; however, this recovery process becomes ineffective after s…
Tunable optical material properties enable novel applications in both versatile metamaterials and photonic components including optical sources and modulators. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are able to highly tune their optical properties with applied bias via altering their free carrier concentration and hence plasma dispersion. The TCO material indium tin oxide (ITO) exhibits unity-strong index changes, and epsilon-near-zero behavior. However, with such tuning the corresponding high optical losses, originating from the fundamental Kramers-Kronig relations, result in low cavity finesse…
We present a sensor capable of detecting solution-based nanoparticles using an optical fiber tip functionalized with a photonic crystal cavity. When sensor tips are retracted from a nanoparticle solution after being submerged, we find that a combination of convective fluid forces and optically-induced trapping cause an aggregation of nanoparticles to form directly on cavity surfaces. A simple readout of quantum dot photoluminescence coupled to the optical fiber shows that nanoparticle presence and concentration can be detected through modified cavity properties. Our sensor can detect both gold…
We propose a Watt-level, all-fiber, ultrafast Er/Yb-codoped double-clad fiber laser passively mode-locked by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) interacting with a weak evanescent field of photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The rGO solution is filled into the cladding holes of the PCF based on total reflection, and after evaporation, the rGO flakes bear only 1/107 of the total energy in laser system, which enhances the thermal damage threshold and decreases the accumulated nonlinearity. By incorporating the saturable absorber into an Er/Yb-codoped fiber ring cavity, stable conventional soliton with a dura…
An interleaved, chirped electro-optic dual comb system is demonstrated for rapid, high dynamic range measurements of cavity optomechanical sensors. This approach allows for the cavity displacements to be interrogated at measurement times as fast as 10 μs over ranges far larger than can be achieved with alternative methods. While the performance of this novel readout approach is evaluated with an optomechanical accelerometer, this method is applicable to a wide range of applications including temperature, pressure, and humidity sensing as well as acoustics and molecular spectroscopy.
Repetitive wet thermal oxidations of a tapered oxide aperture in a micropillar structure are demonstrated. After each oxidation step the confined optical modes are analyzed at room temperature. Three regimes are identified. First, the optical confinement increases when the aperture oxidizes towards the center. Then, the cavity modes shift by more than 30 nm, when the taper starts to oxidize through the center, leading to a decrease in the optical path length. Finally, the resonance frequency levels o?f, when the aperture is oxidized all the way through the micropillar, but confined optical mod…

This work presents numerical and experimental results of plasmonic Metal-Insulator optical nano-cavities. The systems are composed of Silver as metal, polyvinylpyrrolidone or indium tin oxide or zinc oxide as insulator. The proposed nano-cavities exhibit extraordinary effects as colors changing in function of the incident/view angles, enhancement of the experimental real and imaginary parts of the pseudo dielectric constant, an extraordinary transmission of 50$\%$ and zero reflection for both polarizations at the resonant wavelengths. These results lead to the formation and propagation of surf…
We demonstrate generation of linearly polarized pulses from a passively Q-switched Erbium-doped fiber laser. The cavity was designed using only polarization maintaining (PM) fibers and components, resulting in linearly polarized output beam with degree of polarization (DOP) at the level of 97.6%. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used as a saturable absorber for Q-switched operation. The laser was capable of delivering 1.85us pulses with 125nJ pulse energy at 115kHz repetition rate.
Second harmonic conversion from 1550~nm to 775~nm with an efficiency of 400% W$^{-1}$ is demonstrated in a gallium phosphide (GaP) on oxide integrated photonic platform. The platform consists of doubly-resonant, phase-matched ring resonators with quality factors $Q \sim 10^4$, low mode volumes $V \sim 30 (λ/n)^3$, and high nonlinear mode overlaps. Measurements and simulations indicate that conversion efficiencies can be increased by a factor of 20 by improving the waveguide-cavity coupling to achieve critical coupling in current devices.
By combining the large Purcell effect of photonic crystal nanocavity and the strong plasma dispersion effect of the transparent conductive oxides, ultra-compact silicon modulators with heterogeneously integrated indium-tin-oxide (ITO) can potentially achieve unprecedented energy efficiency to atto-joule per bit. In this article, we report the first high-speed silicon nanocavity modulator driven by an ITO gate, achieving 2.2 GHz bandwidth. On-off-key modulation is measured up to 5 Gb/s with only 2 V voltage swing and 18.3 fJ/bit energy efficiency. In addition, we perform in-depth analysis of th…
We propose and demonstrate a direct method to observe higher-order whispering-gallery modes in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) at room temperature. Instead of introducing any defect mode, we show that suppression of lower-order cavity modes can be achieved by destroying vertical reflectors with a surface micro-structure. Up to the 23rd azimuthal order whispering-gallery mode confined laterally by the native oxide layers is observed in experiments through collecting near-field radiation patterns. Various vertical emission transverse modes are identified by the spectrum in exper…
One dimensional nano-beam photonic crystal cavities fabricated in silicon dioxide are considered in both simulation and experiment. Quality factors of over 10^4 are found via simulation, while quality factors of over 5*10^3 are found in experiment, for cavities with mode volumes of 2.0 cubic wavelengths (in oxide) and in the visible wavelength range (600-716nm). The dependences of the cavity quality factor and mode volume for different design parameters are also considered.
The framework of tunnelling states in amorphous media provides the dissipative mechanism that imposes fundamental limits on the performances of ultra-high-Q optical and microwave resonators. In the optical domain, however, the microscopic nature of the tunnelling states and their direct consequences to the optical losses have not been characterized. In this work, we examine the interplay between glassy physics and stoichiometric point defects of ultra-low-loss dielectric mirrors, with a focus on two-level systems of oxygen defects in metal oxide, Ta$_2$O$_5$. In the context of ultra-high-fines…
Quantum photonic integrated circuit (QPIC) is a promising tool for constructing integrated devices for quantum technology applications. In the optical regime, silicon photonics empowered by complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology provides optical components useful for realizing large-scale QPICs. Optical nonlinearity at the single-photon level is required for QPIC to facilitate photon-photon interaction. However, to date, realization of optical elements with deterministic( i.e., not probabilistic) single-photon nonlinearity by using silicon-based components is challenging, de…
We report the fully-scalable fabrication of a large array of hybrid molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) - silicon dioxide (SiO$_2$) one-dimensional, free-standing photonic-crystal cavities capable of enhancement of the MoS$_2$ photoluminescence at the narrow cavity resonance. We demonstrate continuous tunability of the cavity resonance wavelength across the entire emission band of MoS$_2$ simply by variation of the photonic crystal periodicity. Device fabrication started by substrate-scale growth of MoS$_2$ using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on non-birefringent thermal oxide on a silicon wafer; …

We present a low-loss integrated photonics platform in the visible and near ultraviolet regime. Fully-etched waveguides based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) of aluminum oxide operate in a single transverse mode with $<$3 dB/cm propagation loss at a wavelength of 371 nm. Ring resonators with intrinsic quality factors exceeding 470,000 are demonstrated at 405 nm, and the thermo optic coefficient of ALD aluminum oxide is estimated to be $2.75\times10^{-5}$ [RIU/$^\circ$C]. Absorption loss is sufficiently low to allow on-resonance operation with intra-cavity powers up to at least 12.5 mW, limite…
Exciton polaritons in atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenide crystals (monolayer TMDCs) have emerged as a promising candidate to enable topological transport, ultra-efficient laser technologies, and collective quantum phenomena such as polariton condensation and superfluidity at room temperature. However, integrating monolayer TMDCs into high-quality planar microcavities to achieve the required strong coupling between the cavity photons and the TMDC excitons (bound electron-hole pairs) has proven challenging. Previous approaches to integration had to compromise between various adverse…
Chip-scale, high-energy optical pulse generation is becoming increasingly important as we expand activities into hard to reach areas such as space and deep ocean. Q-switching of the laser cavity is the best known technique for generating high-energy pulses, and typically such systems are in the realm of large bench-top solid-state lasers and fiber lasers, especially in the long wavelength range >1.8 um, thanks to their large energy storage capacity. However, in integrated photonics, the very property of tight mode confinement, that enables a small form factor, becomes an impediment to high ene…
Silicon nitride (Si3N4), as a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) material, finds wide use in modern integrated circuit (IC) technology. The past decade has witnessed tremendous development of Si3N4 in photonic areas, with innovations in nonlinear photonics, optical sensing, etc. However, the lack of an integrated laser with high performance prohibits the large-scale integration of Si3N4 waveguides into complex photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here, we demonstrate a novel III-V/Si/Si3N4 structure to enable efficient electrically pumped lasing in a Si3N4 based laser external cavi…
Portable mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy and sensing applications require widely tunable, narrow linewidth, chip-scale, single-mode sources without sacrificing significant output power. However, no such lasers have been demonstrated beyond 3 $μ$m due to the challenge of building tunable, high quality-factor (Q) on-chip cavities. We demonstrate a tunable, single-mode mid-IR laser at 3.4 $μ$m using a high-Q silicon microring cavity with integrated heaters and a multi-mode Interband Cascade Laser (ICL). We show that the multiple longitudinal modes of an ICL collapse into a single frequency via…
Electro-optic signal modulation provides a key functionality in modern technology and information networks. Photonic integration has enabled not only miniaturizing photonic components, but also provided performance improvements due to co-design addressing both electrical and optical device rules. However the millimeter-to-centimeter large footprint of many foundry-ready photonic electro-optic modulators significantly limits scaling density. Furthermore, modulators bear a fundamental a frequency-response to energy-sensitive trade-off, a limitation that can be overcome with coupling-based modula…
