We study the discretization of 3d gravity with $Λ=0$ following the loop quantum gravity framework. In the process, we realize that different choices of polarization are possible. This allows to introduce a new discretization based on the triad as opposed to the connection as in the standard loop quantum gravity framework. We also identify the classical non-trivial symmetries of discrete gravity, namely the Drinfeld double, given in terms of momentum maps. Another choice of polarization is given by the Chern-Simons formulation of gravity. Our framework also provides a new discretization scheme of Chern-Simons, which keeps track of the link between the continuum variables and the discrete ones. We show how the Poisson bracket we recover between the Chern-Simons holonomies allows to recover the Goldman bracket. There is also a transparent link between the discrete Chern-Simons formulation and the discretization of gravity based on the connection (loop gravity) or triad variables (dual loop gravity).
We study constrained Hamiltonian systems by utilizing general forms of time discretization. We show that for explicit discretizations, the requirement of preserving the canonical Poisson bracket under discrete evolution imposes strong conditions on both allowable discretizations and Hamiltonians. These conditions permit time discretizations for a limited class of Hamiltonians, which does not include homogeneous cosmological models. We also present two general classes of implicit discretizations which preserve Poisson brackets for any Hamiltonian. Both types of discretizations generically do no…
Lattice actions and amplitudes that perfectly mirror continuum physics are known as perfect discretizations. Such perfect discretizations naturally preserve the symmetries of the continuum. This is a key concern for general relativity, where diffeomorphism symmetry and dynamics are deeply connected, and diffeomorphisms play a crucial role in quantization. In this work we construct for the first time a perfect discretizations for four-dimensional linearized gravity. We show how the perfect discretizations do lead to a straightforward construction of the one-loop quantum corrections for manifold…
In this paper we suggest gauge invariant discretization of Poincare quantum gravity. We generalize Regge calculus to the case of Riemann-Cartan space. The basic element of the constructed discretization is piecewize linear Riemann-Cartan space with flat pieces of hypercubic form. We consider the model with squared curvature action and calculate the correspondent lattice action. We construct local measure over the dynamical variables of the lattice model.
This is a summary of the talk presented by JP at ICGC2004. It covered some developments in canonical quantum gravity occurred since ICGC2000, emphasizing the recently introduced consistent discretizations of general relativity.
We present a brief description of the ``consistent discretization'' approach to classical and quantum general relativity. We exhibit a classical simple example to illustrate the approach and summarize current classical and quantum applications. We also discuss the implications for the construction of a well defined quantum theory and in particular how to construct a quantum continuum limit.
Boundary actions for three-dimensional quantum gravity in the discretized formalism of Ponzano-Regge are studied with a view towards understanding the boundary degrees of freedom. These degrees of freedom postulated in the holography hypothesis are supposed to be characteristic of quantum gravity theories. In particular it is expected that some of these degrees of freedom reside on black hole horizons. This paper is a study of these ideas in the context of a theory of quantum gravity that requires no additional structure such as supersymmetry or special gravitational backgrounds. Lorentzian as…
We review a recent proposal for the construction of a quantum theory of the gravitational field. The proposal is based on approximating the continuum theory by a discrete theory that has several attractive properties, among them, the fact that in its canonical formulation it is free of constraints. This allows to bypass many of the hard conceptual problems of traditional canonical quantum gravity. In particular the resulting theory implies a fundamental mechanism for decoherence and bypasses the black hole information paradox.
General Relativity is a hugely successful description of gravitation. However, both theory and observations suggest that General Relativity might have significant classical and quantum corrections in the Strong Gravity regime. Testing the strong field limit of gravity is one of the main objectives of the future gravitational wave detectors. One way to detect strong gravity is through the polarization of gravitational waves. For quasi-normal modes of black-holes in General Relativity, the two polarisation states of gravitational waves have the same amplitude and frequency spectrum. Using the pr…
Quasi-normal modes (QNMs) uniquely characterize the final black-hole. Till now, only the QNM frequency and damping time are used to test General relativity. In this work, we show explicitly that another property of the QNMs --- their polarization --- can be a reliable tool for probing gravity. We provide a consistent test for General relativity by considering Chern-Simons gravity. Distinguishing Chern-Simons gravity from General relativity using only template matching is highly challenging. Thus a parameter that can differentiate between Chern-Simons gravity and GR will be a suitable candidate…
In a recent paper, we introduced a new discretization scheme for gravity in 2+1 dimensions. Starting from the continuum theory, this new scheme allowed us to rigorously obtain the discrete phase space of loop gravity, coupled to particle-like "edge mode" degrees of freedom. In this work, we expand on that result by considering the most general choice of integration during the discretization process. We obtain a family of polarizations of the discrete phase space. In particular, one member of this family corresponds to the usual loop gravity phase space, while another corresponds to a new polar…
Gravity can arise in a conventional non-Abelian gauge theory in which a specific phenomenon takes place. Suppose there is a condensation of polarized instantons and antiinstantons in the vacuum state. Then the excitations of the gauge field in the classical approximation are described through the variables of Riemann geometry satisfying the Einstein equations of general relativity. There are no dimensional coupling constants in the theory.
We study the polarizations of gravitational waves (GWs) in two classes of extended gravity theories. First, we formulate the polarizations in linear massive gravity (MG) with generic mass terms of non-Fierz-Pauli type by identifying all the independent variables that obey Klein-Gordon-type equations. The dynamical degrees of freedom (dofs) in the generic MG consist of spin-2 and spin-0 modes, the former breaking down into two tensor (helicity-2), two vector (helicity-1) and one scalar (helicity-0) components, while the latter just corresponding to a scalar. We find convenient ways of decomposi…
In this review we discuss the interplay between discretization, constraint implementation, and diffeomorphism symmetry in Loop Quantum Gravity and Spin Foam models. To this end we review the Consistent Discretizations approach, which is an application of the master constraint program to construct the physical Hilbert space of the canonical theory, as well as the Perfect Actions approach, which aims at finding a path integral measure with the correct symmetry behavior under diffeomorphisms.
There are at least two ways to encode gravity into geometry: Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) for the metric tensor, and teleparallel gravity, where torsion as opposed to curvature encodes the dynamics of the gravitational degrees of freedom. The main purpose of the paper is to explore the relation between loop gravity and teleparallel gravity. We argue that these two formulations of gravity are related to two different discretizations of the Einstein--Cartan action, which were studied recently in the literature. The first discretization leads to the \emph{loop gravity} kinematical…
We point out that there are only three polarizations for gravitational waves in $f(R)$ gravity, and the polarization due to the massive scalar mode is a mix of the pure longitudinal and transverse breathing polarization. The classification of the six polarizations by the Newman-Penrose quantities is based on weak, plane and null gravitational waves, so it is not applicable to the massive mode.
The detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory opens a new era to use gravitational waves to test alternative theories of gravity. We investigate the polarizations of gravitational waves in $f(R)$ gravity and Horndeski theory, both containing scalar modes. These theories predict that in addition to the familiar $+$ and $\times$ polarizations, there are transverse breathing and longitudinal polarizations excited by the massive scalar mode and the new polarization is a single mixed state. It would be very difficult to detect the longitudinal polar…
We present a new method for the quantization of totally constrained systems including general relativity. The method consists in constructing discretized theories that have a well defined and controlled continuum limit. The discrete theories are constraint-free and can be readily quantized. This provides a framework where one can introduce a relational notion of time and that nevertheless approximates in a well defined fashion the theory of interest. The method is equivalent to the group averaging procedure for many systems where the latter makes sense and provides a generalization otherwise. …
Quantum theories of gravity help us to improve our insight into the gravitational interactions. Motivated by the interesting effect of gravity on the photon trajectory, we treat a quantum recipe concluding a classical interaction of light and a massive object such as the sun. We use the linear quantum gravity to compute the classical potential of a photon interacting with a massive scalar. The leading terms have a traditional $1/r$ subordinate and demonstrate a polarization-dependent behavior. This result challenges the equivalence principle; attractive and/or repulsive interactions are admiss…
The question of the correspondence between the number of degrees of freedom and the number of polarization states in hybrid metric-Palatini f(R)-gravity is considered. It is shown that the scalar transverse breathing and longitudinal modes are a mixture of one polarization state. The speed of gravitational waves propagation in hybrid f(R)-gravity is calculated.
A brief review of cosmology in some generalized modified gravity theories with vacuum polarization is presented. Stability question of de Sitter solution is investigated.
We apply the ``consistent discretization'' technique to the Regge action for (Euclidean and Lorentzian) general relativity in arbitrary number of dimensions. The result is a well defined canonical theory that is free of constraints and where the dynamics is implemented as a canonical transformation. This provides a framework for the discussion of topology change in canonical quantum gravity. In the Lorentzian case, the framework appears to be naturally free of the ``spikes'' that plague traditional formulations. It also provides a well defined recipe for determining the measure of the path int…
The gravitational waves of Hořava gravity, their polarization states and their possible observational signatures are discussed. Using the gauge-invariant variable formalism, we found the three polarization modes in Hořava gravity excited by the three physical degrees of freedom contained in this theory. In particular, the scalar degree of freedom excites a mix of the transverse breathing and the longitudinal polarizations. The constraints from the previous experimental observations are taken into account, especially including the speed bound from the observations of GW170817 and GRB 170817A. I…
Multigravity theories are constructed from the discretization of the extra dimension of five dimensional gravity. Using an ADM decomposition, the discretization is performed while maintaining the four dimensional diffeomorphism invariance on each site. We relate the Goldstone bosons used to realize nonlinearly general covariance in discretized gravity to the shift fields of the higher dimensional metric. We investigate the scalar excitations of the resulting theory and show the absence of ghosts and massive modes; this is due to a local symmetry inherited from the reparametrization invariance …
In the fat brane model, also known as the split fermion model, it is assumed that leptons and baryons live in different hypersurfaces of a thick brane in order to explain the proton stability without invoking any symmetry. It turns out that, in the presence of a gravity source $M$, particles will see different four-dimensional (4D) geometries and hence, from the point of view of 4D-observers, the equivalence principle will be violated. As a consequence, we show that a hydrogen atom in the gravitational field of $M$ will acquire a radial electric dipole. This effect is regulated by the Hamilton…
Gravitational waves (GWs) have opened a new window on fundamental physics in a number of important ways. The next generation of GW detectors may reveal more information about the polarization structure of GWs. Additionally, there is growing interest in theories of gravity beyond GR. One such theory which remains viable within the context of recent measurements of the speed of propagation of GWs is the teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity. In this work, we explore the polarization structure of this newly proposed formulation of Horndeski theory. In curvature-based gravity, Horndeski theor…
The Regge Calculus is a powerful method to approximate a continuous manifold by a simplicial lattice, keeping the connectivities of the underlying lattice fixed and taking the edge lengths as degrees of freedom. The Discrete Regge Model limits the choice of the link lengths to a finite number. We examine the phase structure of Standard Regge Calculus in four dimensions and compare our Monte Carlo results with those of the $Z_2$-Regge Model as well as with another formulation of lattice gravity derived from group theoretical considerations. Within all of the three models of quantum gravity we f…
We determine the possible gravitational wave polarizations in two general classes of teleparallel gravity theories, using the metric and symmetric teleparallel geometries. For this purpose we apply the Newman-Penrose formalism, and find that depending on the choice of parameters, the $\mathrm{E}(2)$ class of the theories is one of $\mathrm{N}_2, \mathrm{N}_3, \mathrm{III}_5, \mathrm{II}_6$, corresponding to two to six polarizations, where all of them include the two tensor polarizations known from general relativity. We also find classes of theories apart from general relativity which yield th…
In this article we give a systematic definition of the recently introduced spin foam models for four dimensional quantum gravity reviewing the main results on their semiclassical limit on fixed discretizations.
Discrete versions of the Yang-Mills and Einstein actions are proposed for any finite group. These actions are invariant respectively under local gauge transformations, and under the analogues of Lorentz and general coordinate transformations. The case Z_n \times Z_n \times...\times Z_n is treated in some detail, recovering the Wilson action for Yang-Mills theories, and a new discretized action for gravity.
We investigate the spectral properties of the volume operator in quantum gravity in the framework of a previously introduced lattice discretization. The presence of a well-defined scalar product in this approach permits us to make definite statements about the hermiticity of quantum operators. We find that the spectrum of the volume operator is discrete, but that the nature of its eigenstates differs from that found in an earlier continuum treatment.
Conventional non-Abelian SO(4) gauge theory is able to describe gravity provided the gauge field possesses a specific polarized vacuum state. In this vacuum the instantons and anti-instantons have a preferred direction of orientation. Their orientation plays the role of the order parameter for the polarized phase of the gauge field. The interaction of a weak and smooth gauge field with the polarized vacuum is described by an effective long-range action which is identical to the Hilbert action of general relativity. In the classical limit this action results in the Einstein equations of general…
We propose a toy model of quantum gravity in two dimensions with Euclidean signature. The model is given by a kind of discretization which is different from the dynamical triangulation. We show that there exists a continuum limit and we can calculate some physical quantities such as the expectation value of the area, that is, the volume of the two dimensional euclidean space-time. We also consider the extensions of the model to higher dimensions.
A novel structure-preserving algorithm for general relativity in vacuum is derived from a lattice gauge theoretic discretization of the tetradic Palatini action. The resulting model of discrete gravity is demonstrated to preserve local Lorentz invariance and symplectic structure.
We consider quantum gravity model with the squared curvature action. We construct lattice discretization of the model (both on hypercubic and simplicial lattices) starting from its teleparallel equivalent. The resulting lattice models have the actions that are bounded from below while Einstein equations (without matter) appear in their classical limit.
We compute analytically the tidal field and polarizations of an exact gravitational wave generated by a cylindrical beam of null matter of finite width and length in quadratic curvature gravity. We propose that this wave can represent the gravitational wave that keep up with the high energy photons produced in a gamma ray burst (GRB) source.
The energy conditions of classical Einstein gravity fail once quantum effects are introduced. These quantum violations of the energy conditions are not subtle high-energy Planck scale effects. Rather the quantum violations of the energy conditions already occur in semiclassical quantum gravity and are first-order O(\hbar) effects. Quantum violations of the energy conditions are widespread, albeit small.
The review paper "Discrete Structures in Physics", written in 2000, describes how Regge's discretization of Einstein's theory has been applied in classical relativity and quantum gravity. Here, developments since 2000 are reviewed briefly, with particular emphasis on progress in quantum gravity through spin foam models and group field theories.
To obtain a well defined path integral one often employs discretizations. In the case of gravity and reparametrization invariant systems, the latter of which we consider here as a toy example, discretizations generically break diffeomorphism and reparametrization symmetry, respectively. This has severe implications, as these symmetries determine the dynamics of the corresponding system. Indeed we will show that a discretized path integral with reparametrization invariance is necessarily also discretization independent and therefore uniquely determined by the corresponding continuum quantum mec…
The observation of the inspiral and merger of compact binaries by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration has allowed for new tests of Einstein's theory in the extreme gravity regime, where gravitational interactions are simultaneously strong, non-linear, and dynamical. Theories beyond Einstein's can also be constrained by detecting the polarization modes of gravitational waves. In this paper, we show that dynamical Chern-Simons and Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity cannot be differentiated from general relativity based on the detection of polarization modes alone. To prove this result, we use the Ne…
We show that discretization of spacetime naturally suggests discretization of Hilbert space itself. Specifically, in a universe with a minimal length (for example, due to quantum gravity), no experiment can exclude the possibility that Hilbert space is discrete. We give some simple examples involving qubits and the Schrodinger wavefunction, and discuss implications for quantum information and quantum gravity.
We derive the gravitational waves for $f\left(T, B\right)$ gravity, an extension of teleparallel gravity containing the torsion scalar $T$ and the boundary term $B$, and demonstrate that it is equivalent to $f(R)$ gravity. Gravitational waves, in this theory, show three polarizations: the two standard, plus and cross, of General Relativity, which are purely transverse, massless tensor polarization modes with two-helicity, and an additional massive scalar mode with zero-helicity. The last one is a mix of a longitudinal mode and a transverse breathing mode. The boundary term $B$ excites the extr…
The direct detection of gravitational waves by LIGO/Virgo opened the possibility to test General Relativity and its alternatives in the high speed, strong field regime. Alternative theories of gravity generally predict more polarizations than General Relativity, so it is important to study the polarization contents of theories of gravity to reveal the nature of gravity. In this talk, we analyzed the polarizations contents of Horndeski theory and $f(R)$ gravity. We found out that in addition to the familiar plus and cross polarizations, a \emph{massless} Horndeski theory predicts an extra trans…
A magnetic field, coherent over the horizon size at the decoupling and strong enough to rotate the polarization plane of the CMBR, can be generated from the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations amplified by the space-time evolution of the dilaton coupling. The possible relevance of this result for superstring inspired cosmological models is discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the connection between Faraday rotation signals and stochastic gravity-wave backgrounds.
We study gravity coupled to a scalar field in spherical symmetry using loop quantum gravity techniques. Since this model has local degrees of freedom, one has to face ``the problem of dynamics'', that is, diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints that do not form a Lie algebra. We tackle the problem using the ``uniform discretization'' technique. We study the expectation value of the master constraint and argue that among the states that minimize the master constraint is one that incorporates the usual Fock vacuum for the matter content of the theory.
We discuss the interplay between standard canonical analysis and canonical discretization in three-dimensional gravity with cosmological constant. By using the Hamiltonian analysis, we find that the continuum local symmetries of the theory are given by the on-shell space-time diffeomorphisms, which at the action level, corresponds to the Kalb-Ramond transformations. At the time of discretization, although this symmetry is explicitly broken, we prove that the theory still preserves certain gauge freedom generated by a constant curvature relation in terms of holonomies and the Gauss's law in the…
Several approaches to the dynamics of loop quantum gravity involve discretizing the equations of motion. The resulting discrete theories are known to be problematic since the first class algebra of constraints of the continuum theory becomes second class upon discretization. If one treats the second class constraints properly, the resulting theories have very different dynamics and number of degrees of freedom than those of the continuum theory. It is therefore questionable how these theories could be considered a starting point for quantization and the definition of a continuum theory through…
A local quantum bosonic model on a lattice is constructed whose low energy excitations are gravitons described by linearized Einstein action. Thus the bosonic model is a quantum theory of gravity, at least at the linear level. We find that the compactification and the discretization of metric tenor are crucial in obtaining a quantum theory of gravity.
As in other parts of physics, we advocate the interaction approach: experiments <--> phenomenology <--> low-energy effective (field) theory <--> microscopic theory to probe the microscopic origin of gravity. Using chi-g phenomenological framework, we discuss the tests of equivalence principles. The only experimentally unconstrained degree of freedom is the axion freedom. It has effects on the long-range astrophysical/cosmological propagation of electromagnetic waves and can be tested/measured using future generation of polarization measurement of cosmic background radiation. The verification o…
We consider an extended theory of gravity with Lagrangian $\mathcal{L} = f(R,{\bf T}^{(n)})$, with ${\bf T}^{(n)}$ being a $2n$-th order invariant made of contractions of the energy-momentum tensor. When $n=1$ this theory reduces to $f(R,T)$ gravity, where $T$ accounts for the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We study the gravitational wave polarization modes, from which it results that when the matter Lagrangian contains dynamical scalar fields minimally coupled to the geometry, further polarization modes arise with respect to General Relativity. Finally we show that the motion for test p…
In general relativity, a gravitational wave has two polarization modes (tensor mode), but it could have additional polarizations (scalar and vector modes) in the early stage of the universe, where the general relativity may not strictly hold and/or the effect of higher-dimensional gravity may become significant. In this paper, we discuss how to detect extra-polarization modes of stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB), and study the separability of each polarization using future space-based detectors such as BBO and DECIGO. We specifically consider two plausible setups of the spacecraft…
I analyze the deformation of Lorentz symmetry that holds in certain noncommutative spacetimes and the way in which Lorentz symmetry is broken in other noncommutative spacetimes. I also observe that discretization of areas does not necessarily require departures from Lorentz symmetry. This is due to the fact that Lorentz symmetry has no implications for exclusive measurement of the area of a surface, but it governs the combined measurements of the area and the velocity of a surface. In a quantum-gravity theory Lorentz symmetry can be consistent with area discretization, but only when the observ…
The 4D Regge action is invariant under 5--1 and 4--2 Pachner moves, which define a subset of (local) changes of the triangulation. Given this fact one might hope to find a local path integral measure that makes the quantum theory invariant under these moves and hence makes the theory partially triangulation invariant. We show that such a local invariant path integral measure does not exist for the 4D linearized Regge theory. To this end we uncover an interesting geometric interpretation for the Hessian of the 4D Regge action. This geometric interpretation will allow us to prove that the determ…
The physical degrees of freedom of a gravitational wave (GW) are imprints of the nature of gravity. We can test a gravity theory by searching for polarization modes beyond general relativity. The LIGO-Virgo collaboration analyzed several GW events in the O1 and O2 observing runs in the pure polarization framework, where they perform the Bayesian model selection between general relativity and the theory allowing only scalar or vector polarization modes. In this paper, we reanalyze the polarizations of GW170814 (binary black hole merger) and GW170817 (binary neutron star merger) in the improved …
We consider the nondynamical Chern-Simons (nCS) modified gravity, which is regarded as a parity-odd theory of massive gravity in four dimensions. We first find polarization modes of gravitational waves for $θ=x/μ$ in nCS modified gravity by using the Newman-Penrose formalism where the null complex tetrad is necessary to specify gravitational waves. We show that in the Newman-Penrose formalism, the number of polarization modes is one in addition to an unspecified $Ψ_4$, implying three degrees of freedom for $θ=x/μ$. This compares with two for a canonical embedding of $θ=t/μ$. Also, if one intro…
