After a successful core-collapse supernova, a neutrino-driven wind develops where it is possible to synthesize lighter heavy elements ($30<Z<45$). In the early galaxy, the origin of these elements is associated to the r-process and to an additional process. Here we assume the additional process corresponds to the weak r-process or alpha-process taking place in neutrino-driven winds. Based on a trajectory obtained from hydrodynamical simulations we study the astrophysics and nuclear physics uncertainties with our main focus on the $(α,n)$ reactions. These are critical to redistribute the matter and allow to further move it from light to heavy elements after nuclear statistical equilibrium freezes out. In this first sensitivity study, we vary all $(α,n)$ reactions by given constant factors which are justified based on the uncertainties of the statistical model and its nuclear physics input, mainly alpha optical potentials under the conditions found in the wind. Our results show that $(α,n)$ reactions are indeed very important to predict abundances. Therefore, further studies will follow to identify individual critical reactions. Since the nucleosynthesis path is close to stability, these reactions can be measured in the near future. This will uniquely allow to reduce the nuclear physics uncertainties and thus to use observations to constrain and understand the astrophysical conditions in the wind.
Neutrino-driven winds following core collapse supernovae have been proposed as a suitable site where the so-called light heavy elements (between Sr to Ag) can be synthetized. For moderately neutron-rich winds, ($α,n$) reactions play a critical role in the weak r process, becoming the main mechanism to drive nuclear matter towards heavier elements. In this paper we summarize the sensitivity of network-calculated abundances to the astrophysical conditions, and to uncertainties in the ($α,n$) reaction rates. A list of few ($α,n$) reactions were identified to dominate the uncertainty in the calcul…
Neutrino-driven winds, which follow core-collapse supernova explosions, present a fascinating nuclear astrophysics problem that requires understanding advanced astrophysics simulations, the properties of matter and neutrino interactions under extreme conditions, the structure and reactions of exotic nuclei, and comparisons against forefront astronomical observations. The neutrino-driven wind has attracted vast attention over the last 20 years as it was suggested to be a candidate for the astrophysics site where half of the heavy elements are produced via the r-process. In this review, we summa…
We introduce a hybrid method to determine neutrino mass hierarchy by simultaneous measurements of detector responses induced by antineutrino and neutrino fluxes from accretion and cooling phase of type II supernova. The (anti)neutrino-nucleus cross sections for $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{56}$Fe and $^{208}$Pb are calculated in the framework of relativistic nuclear energy density functional and weak Hamiltonian, while the cross sections for inelastic scattering on free protons, $p(\barν_{e},e^{+})n$, are obtained using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. The simulations of (anti)neutrino fluxe…
The experimental result of the solar neutrino flux at one AU produced by the $p+p+e \rightarrow d+ν_e$ reaction (\textit{pep}) was announced for the first time in 2012 by the Borexino collaboration. This neutrino flux was significantly greater than the flux predicted by Bahcall and May, who used two body approaches for calculation of this reaction. We have used the three-body model for the proton-proton-electron system in the continuous spectrum of energy to determine the rate of the \textit{pep} reaction and have estimated the neutrino flux. Our result of the neutrino flux is 25-40\% more tha…
Background: In the environment of high neutrino-fluxes provided in core-collapse supernovae or neutron star mergers, neutrino-induced reactions with nuclei contribute to the nucleosynthesis processes. A number of terrestrial neutrino detectors are based on inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and modeling of the respective cross sections allow predictions of the expected detector reaction rates. Purpose: To provide a self-consistent microscopic description of neutrino-nucleus cross sections involving a large pool of Z = 8 - 82 nuclei for the implementation in models of nucleosynthesis and neu…
It has recently been proposed that ${}^{92}_{41}$Nb and ${}^{98}_{43}$Tc may have been formed in the $ν$-process. We investigate the neutrino induced reactions related to the $ν$-process origin of the two odd-odd nuclei. The main neutrino reactions for ${}^{92}_{41}$Nb are the charged-current (CC) $^{92}$Zr($ν_e,e^{-}$)$^{92}$Nb and the neutral-current (NC) $^{93}$Nb($ν ({\bar ν}), ν^{'} ({\bar ν})^{'}$ n)$^{92}$Nb reactions. The main reactions for ${}^{98}_{43}$Tc, are the CC reaction $^{98}$Mo($ν_e,e^-$)$^{98}$Tc and the NC reaction $^{99}$Ru($ν ({\bar ν}), ν^{'} ({\bar ν})^{'}$ p)$^{98}$Tc.…
A protoneutron star produced in a core-collapse supernova (CCSN) drives a wind by its intense neutrino emission. We implement active-sterile neutrino oscillations in a steady-state model of this neutrino-driven wind to study their effects on the dynamics and nucleosynthesis of the wind in a self-consistent manner. Using vacuum mixing parameters indicated by some experiments for a sterile $ν_s$ of $\sim 1$ eV in mass, we observe interesting features of oscillations due to various feedback. For the higher $ν_s$ mass values, we find that oscillations can reduce the mass loss rate and the wind vel…
Inclusive neutrino-nucleus cross sections are calculated using a consistent relativistic mean-field theoretical framework. The weak lepton-hadron interaction is expressed in the standard current-current form, the nuclear ground state is described with the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model, and the relevant transitions to excited nuclear states are calculated in the relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation. Illustrative test calculations are performed for charged-current neutrino reactions on $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{56}$Fe, and $^{208}$Pb, and results compared with previous stud…
Charged-current neutrino-nucleus cross sections for 54,56Fe and 58,60Ni are calculated and compared using frameworks based on relativistic and Skyrme energy density functionals, and the shell model. The current theoretical uncertainties in modeling neutrino-nucleus cross sections are assessed in relation to the predicted Gamow-Teller transition strength and available data, multipole decomposition of the cross sections, and cross sections averaged over the Michel flux and Fermi-Dirac distribution. Employing different microscopic approaches and models, the DAR neutrino-56Fe cross section and its…
We study the effect of the density-dependent axial and vector form factors on the electro-neutrino ($ν_e$) and anti-neutrino $({\bar ν}_e)$ reactions for a nucleon in nuclear matter or in $^{12}$C. The nucleon form factors in free space are presumed to be modified for a bound nucleon in a nuclear medium. We adopt the density-dependent form factors calculated by the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, and apply them to the $ν_e$ and ${\bar ν}_e$ induced reactions with the initial energy $E = $ 8 $\sim$ 80 MeV. We find that the total $ν_e$ cross sections on $^{12}$C as well as a nucleon in nuclear…
Based on the steady state equilibrium condition for neutron-proton-electron-positron gas in the neutrino-driven wind from protoneutron star, we estimate the initial electron fraction in the wind in a simple and effective way. We find that the condition in the wind might be propriate for the r-process nucleosynthesis.
We investigate the nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven winds blown off from a $3M_\odot$ massive proto-neutron star (mPNS) temporarily formed during the collapse of a $100M_\odot$ star. Such mPNSs would be formed in hypernovae. We construct steady and spherically symmetric wind solutions. We set large neutrino luminosities of $\sim 10^{53}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$ and average energies of electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in the ranges of $ε_{ν_e}=9-16\ {\rm MeV}$ and $ε_{\barν_e}=11-18\ {\rm MeV}$ based on a recent numerical relativity simulation. The wind solutions indicate much shorter temp…
Neutrino oscillations, especially to light sterile states, can affect the nucleosynthesis yields because of their possible feedback effect on the electron fraction (Ye). For the first time, we perform nucleosynthesis calculations for neutrino-driven wind trajectories from the neutrino-cooling phase of an 8.8 Msun electron-capture supernova, whose hydrodynamic evolution was computed in spherical symmetry with sophisticated neutrino transport and whose Ye evolution was post-processed by including neutrino oscillations both between active and active-sterile flavors. We also take into account the …
The neutrino-driven wind from proto-neutron stars is a proposed site for r-process nucleosynthesis, although most previous work has found that a wind heated only by neutrinos cannot produce the third r-process peak. However, several groups have noted that introducing a secondary heating source within the wind can change the hydrodynamic conditions sufficiently for a strong r-process to proceed. One possible secondary heating source is gravito-acoustic waves, generated by convection inside the proto-neutron star. As these waves propagate into the wind, they can both accelerate the wind and shoc…
Neutrino induced reactions are a basic ingredient in astrophysical processes like star evolution. The existence of neutrino oscillations affects the rate of nuclear electroweak decays which participates in the chain of events that determines the fate of the star. Among the processes of interest, the production of heavy elements in core-collapse supernovae is strongly dependent upon neutrino properties, like the mixing between different species of neutrinos. In this work we study the effects of neutrino oscillations upon the electron fraction as a function of the neutrino mixing parameters, for…
We introduce a hybrid method to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy by simultaneous measurements of responses of at least two detectors to antineutrino and neutrino fluxes from accretion and cooling phases of core-collapse supernovae. The (anti)neutrino-nucleus cross sections for $^{56}$Fe and $^{208}$Pb are calculated in the framework of the relativistic nuclear energy density functional and weak interaction Hamiltonian, while the cross sections for inelastic scattering on free protons $\mathrm{p}(\barν_\mathrm{e},\mathrm{e}^{+})\mathrm{n}$ are obtained using heavy-baryon chiral perturbatio…
Neutrino-driven winds that follow core collapse supernovae were thought to be the site where half of the heavy elements are produced by the r-process. Although recent hydrodynamic simulations show that the conditions in the wind are not enough for the r-process, lighter heavy elements like Sr, Y, and Zr can be produced. However, it is still not clear whether the conditions in the wind are slightly neutron rich or proton rich. Here we investigate the nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds for both these conditions and systematically explore the impact of wind parameters on abundances. Our res…
Neutrino-driven winds that follow core-collapse supernovae are an exciting astrophysical site for the production of heavy elements. Although hydrodynamical simulations show that the conditions in the wind are not extreme enough for a r-process up to uranium, neutrino-driven winds may be the astrophysical site where lighter heavy elements between Sr an Ag are produced, either by the weak r-process or by the $ν\!p$-process. However, it is still not clear if the conditions in the wind are slightly neutron-rich or proton-rich. Therefore, we investigate the nucleosynthesis in the wind for neutron- …
We review the theory and phenomenology of neutrino electromagnetic interactions, which give us powerful tools to probe the physics beyond the Standard Model. After a derivation of the general structure of the electromagnetic interactions of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the one-photon approximation, we discuss the effects of neutrino electromagnetic interactions in terrestrial experiments and in astrophysical environments. We present the experimental bounds on neutrino electromagnetic properties and we confront them with the predictions of theories beyond the Standard Model.
We have performed hydrodynamical simulations of the long-time evolution of proto-neutron stars to study the nucleosynthesis using the resulting wind trajectories. Although the conditions found in the present wind models are not favourable for the production of heavy elements, a small enhancement of the entropy results in the production of r-process elements with A $\approx$ 195. This allows us to explore the sensitivity of their production to the hydrodynamical evolution (wind termination shock) and nuclear physics input used.
We predict the sterile neutrino spectrum of some of the key solar nuclear reactions and discuss the possibility of these being observed by the next generation of solar neutrino experiments. By using an up-to-date standard solar model with good agreement with current helioseismology and solar neutrino flux data sets, we found that from solar neutrino fluxes arriving on Earth only 3\%-4\% correspond to the sterile neutrino. The most intense solar sources of sterile neutrinos are the $pp$ and $^7Be$ nuclear reactions with a total flux of $2.2\times 10^{9}\;{\rm cm^2 s^{-1}}$ and $1.8\times 10^{8}…
