We consider bicolored maps, i.e. graphs which are drawn on surfaces, and construct a bijection between (i) oriented maps with arbitary face structure, and (ii) (weighted) non-oriented maps with exactly one face. Above, each non-oriented map is counted with a multiplicity which is based on the concept of the orientability generating series and the measure of orientability of a map. This bijection has the remarkable property of preserving the underlying bicolored graph. Our bijection shows equivalence between two explicit formulas for the top-degree of Jack characters, i.e. (suitably normalized) coefficients in the expansion of Jack symmetric functions in the basis of power-sum symmetric functions.
Phylogenetic trees are binary nonplanar trees with labelled leaves, and plane oriented recursive trees are planar trees with an increasing labelling. Both families are enumerated by double factorials. A bijection is constructed, using the respective representations a 2-partitions and trapezoidal words.
The active bijection for oriented matroids (and real hyperplane arrangements, and graphs, as particular cases) is introduced and investigated by the authors in a series of papers. Given any oriented matroid defined on a linearly ordered ground set, we exhibit one particularité of its bases, which we call its active basis, with remarkable properties. It preserves activities (for oriented matroids in the sense of Las Vergnas, for matroid bases in the sense of Tutte), as well as some active partitions of the ground set associated with oriented matroids and matroid bases. It yields a canonical bij…
Short rewriting, and geometric explanations related to the active bijection, for: Extension-lifting bijections for oriented matroids, by S. Backman, F. Santos, C.H. Yuen, arXiv:1904.03562v2 (October 29, 2023)
Kim and Drake used generating functions to prove that the number of 2-distant noncrossing matchings, which are in bijection with little Schroeder paths, is the same as the weight of Dyck paths in which downsteps from even height have weight 2. This work presents bijections from those Dyck paths to little Schroeder paths, and from a similar set of Dyck paths to big Schroeder paths. We show the effect of these bijections on the corresponding matchings, find generating functions for two new classes of lattice paths, and demonstrate a relationship with 231-avoiding permutations.
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.
We introduce and study filtrations of a matroid on a linearly ordered ground set, which are particular sequences of nested sets. A given basis can be decomposed into a uniquely defined sequence of bases of minors, such that these bases have an internal/external activity equal to 1/0 or 0/1 (in the sense of Tutte polynomial activities). This decomposition, which we call the active filtration/partition of the basis, refines the known partition of the ground set into internal and external elements with respect to a given basis. It can be built by a certain closure operator, which we call the acti…
This paper is motivated by two problems recently proposed by Coker on combinatorial identities related to the Narayana polynomials and the Catalan numbers. We find that a bijection of Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde can be used to provide combinatorial interpretations of the identities of Coker when it is applied to weighted plane trees. For the sake of presentation of our combinatorial correspondences, we provide a description of the bijection of Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde in a slightly different manner in the form of a direct construction from plane trees to 2-Motzkin paths without the intermedia…
We settle a question of Bressoud concerning the existence of an explicit bijection from a class of oriented square-ice graphs to a class of tournaments. We give an algorithm constructing such a bijection.
We construct a bijection from permutations to some weighted Motzkin paths known as Laguerre histories. As one application of our bijection, a neat $q$-$γ$-positivity expansion of the $(\inv,\exc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials is obtained.
A generalized Motzkin path, called G-Motzkin path for short, of length $n$ is a lattice path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the XOY-plane that consists of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. An $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin path is a weighted G-Motzkin path such that the $\mathbf{u}$-steps, $\mathbf{h}$-steps, $\mathbf{v}$-steps and $\mathbf{d}$-steps are weighted respectively by $1, a, b$ and $c$. Let $τ$ be a word on $\{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{d}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, denoted …
We describe a bijection between oriented cubes and adjoints of cross-polytopes. This correspondence is used to prove that the real affine cube is, up to reorientation in the same class, the unique oriented cube that is realizable. Moreover, its underlying matroid is, up to isomorphism, the unique combinatorial cube that is realizable over the reals.
In this paper, we investigate the weighted Catalan, Motzkin and Schröder numbers together with the corresponding weighted paths. The relation between these numbers is illustrated by three equations, which also lead to some known and new interesting identities. To show these three equations, we provide combinatorial proofs. One byproduct is to find a bijection between two sets of Catalan paths: one consisting of those with $k$ valleys, and the other consisting of $k$ $\mathbf{N}$ steps in even positions.
Ardila and Develin's paper on tropical oriented hyperplane arrangements and tropical oriented matroids defines tropical oriented matroids and conjectures a bijection between them and triangulations of products of simplices $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. Oh and Yoo recently confirmed this conjecture; however, neither group addressed the case of hyperplanes that are not in generic position. These non-generic arrangements do not correspond to tropical oriented matroids, but they encode information about subdivisions of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. This note considers the non-generic case and presents som…
The active bijection forms a package of results studied by the authors in a series of papers in oriented matroids. The present paper is intended to state the main results in the particular case, and more widespread language, of graphs. We associate any directed graph, defined on a linearly ordered set of edges, with one particular of its spanning trees, which we call its active spanning tree. For any graph on a linearly ordered set of edges, this yields a surjective mapping from orientations onto spanning trees, which preserves activities (for orientations in the sense of Las Vergnas, for span…
Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we show that all the symbolic and ordinary powers of $I(\mathcal{D})$ coincide when $\mathcal{D}$ is a weighted oriented certain class of tree. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers of naturally oriented lines.
Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and let $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal in a polynomial ring $R$. We give the formula of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/I(\mathcal{D})$ when $\mathcal{D}$ is a weighted oriented path or cycle such that edges of $\mathcal{D}$ are oriented in one direction. Additionally, we compute the projective dimension for this class of graphs.
Let $D$ be a weighted oriented graph with the underlying graph $G$ and $I(D), I(G) $ be the edge ideals corresponding to $D$ and $G$ respectively. We show that the regularity of edge ideal of a certain class of weighted oriented graph remains same even after adding certain kind of new edges to it. We also establish the relationship between the regularity of edge ideal of weighted oriented path and cycle with the regularity of edge ideal of their underlying graph when vertices of $V^+$ are sinks.
Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we investigate the Betti numbers of $I(\mathcal{D})$ via upper-Koszul simplicial complexes, Betti splittings and the mapping cone construction. In particular, we provide recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of edge ideals of several classes of weighted oriented graphs. We also identify classes of weighted oriented graphs whose edge ideals have a unique extremal Betti number which allows us to compute the regularity and projective dimension for the identified classes. Furthermore, we charac…
This paper concentrates on the set $\mathcal{V}_n$ of weighted Dyck paths of length $2n$ with special restrictions on the level of valleys. We first give its explicit formula of the counting generating function in terms of certain weight functions. When the weight functions are specialized, some connections are builded between $\mathcal{V}_n$ and other classical combinatorial structures such as $(a,b)$-Motzkin paths, $q$-Schröder paths, Delannoy paths and complete $k$-ary trees. Some bijections are also established between these settings and $\mathcal{V}_n$ subject to certain special weight fu…
A probabilistic bijection between twenty-vertex configurations with a free west boundary and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns avoiding three equal entries in a row
Let $D=(G,\mathcal{O},w)$ be a weighted oriented graph whose edge ideal is $I(D)$. In this paper, we characterize the unmixed property of $I(D)$ for each one of the following cases: $G$ is an $SCQ$ graph; $G$ is a chordal graph; $G$ is a simplicial graph; $G$ is a perfect graph; $G$ has no $4$- or $5$-cycles; $G$ is a graph without $3$- and $5$-cycles; and ${\rm girth}(G)\geqslant 5$.
Let $D$ be a weighted oriented graph, whose underlying graph is $G$, and let $I(D)$ be its edge ideal. If $G$ has no $3$-, $5$-, or $7$-cycles, or $G$ is König, we characterize when $I(D)$ is unmixed. If $G$ has no $3$- or $5$-cycles, or $G$ is König, we characterize when $I(D)$ is Cohen--Macaulay. We prove that $I(D)$ is unmixed if and only if $I(D)$ is Cohen--Macaulay when $G$ has girth greater than $7$ or $G$ is König and has no $4$-cycles.
An antimagic labeling of a directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1,\dots,m\}$ such that all oriented vertex sums of vertices in $D$ are pairwise distinct, where the oriented vertex sum of a vertex $u$ is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation, where an antimagic orientation of a graph $G$ is an orientation of $G$ which has an antimagic labeling. We use a constructive technique to prove that caterpilla…
In this work, we establish an analogue result of the Erdös-Stone theorem of weighted digraphs using Regularity Lemma of digraphs. We give a stability result of oriented graphs and digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle and show that almost all oriented graphs and almost all digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle are almost bipartite respectively.
We build on recent work of Yeats, Courtiel, and others involving connected chord diagrams. We first derive from a Hopf-algebraic foundation a class of tree-like functional equations and prove that they are solved by weighted generating functions of two different subsets of weighted connected chord diagrams: arbitrary diagrams and diagrams forbidding so-called top cycle subdiagrams. These equations generalize the classic specification for increasing ordered trees and their solution uses a novel decomposition, simplifying and generalizing previous results. The resulting tree perspective on chord…
In a recent work, Keith and Xiong gave a refinement of Glaisher's theorem by using a Sylvester-style bijection. In this paper, we introduce two families of colored partitions, flat and regular partitions, and generalize the bijection of Keith and Xiong to these partitions. We then state two results, the first at degree one, where partitions have parts with primary colors, and the second result at degree two for secondary-colored partitions, using the result of the first paper of this series. These results allow us to easily retrieve the Frenkel-Kac character formulas of level one standard modu…
In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equ…
It has been previously shown by the authors that a directed graph on a linearly ordered set of edges (ordered graph) with adjacent unique source and sink (bipolar digraph) has a unique fully optimal spanning tree, that satisfies a simple criterion on fundamental cycle/cocycle directions. This result yields, for any ordered graph, a canonical bijection between bipolar orientations and spanning trees with internal activity 1 and external activity 0 in the sense of the Tutte polynomial. This bijection can be extended to all orientations and all spanning trees, yielding the active bijection, prese…
We characterize unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay edge-weighted edge ideals of very well-covered graphs. We also provide examples of oriented graphs which have unmixed and non-Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted edge ideals, while the edge ideal of their underlying graph is Cohen-Macaulay. This disproves a conjecture posed by Pitones, Reyes and Toledo.
A graphical design is a subset of graph vertices such that the weighted averages of certain graph eigenvectors over the design agree with their global averages. We use Gale duality to show that positively weighted graphical designs in regular graphs are in bijection with the faces of a generalized eigenpolytope of the graph. This connection can be used to organize, compute and optimize designs. We illustrate the power of this tool on three families of Cayley graphs -- cocktail party graphs, cycles, and graphs of hypercubes -- by computing or bounding the smallest designs that average all but t…
This manuscript recounts some of the author's contributions to algebraic and enumerative combinatorics. We have focused on two types of generalizations of bipartite maps, which are bipartite graphs embedded on surfaces. Maps are known to appear in many areas of theoretical physics and discrete mathematics, but one key interest for fundamental computer science is how multi-facetted they are in the sense that multiple encodings exist which are not interchangeable, like Tutte's/loop equations, the topological recursion, the KP hierarchy and numerous bijections which made the field so rich. One ge…
We consider the random Markov matrix obtained by assigning i.i.d. non-negative weights to each edge of the complete oriented graph. In this study, the weights have unbounded first moment and belong to the domain of attraction of an alpha-stable law. We prove that as the dimension tends to infinity, the empirical measure of the singular values tends to a probability measure which depends only on alpha, characterized as the expected value of the spectral measure at the root of a weighted random tree. The latter is a generalized two-stage version of the Poisson weighted infinite tree (PWIT) intro…
We study the combinatorics of tropical hyperplane arrangements, and their relationship to (classical) hyperplane face monoids. We show that the refinement operation on the faces of a tropical hyperplane arrangement, introduced by Ardila and Develin in their definition of a tropical oriented matroid, induces an action of the hyperplane face monoid of the classical braid arrangement on the arrangement, and hence on a number of interesting related structures. Along the way, we introduce a new characterization of the types (in the sense of Develin and Sturmfels) of points with respect to a tropica…
