We investigate the origin of ubiquitous low energy kinks found in Angle Resolved Photoemission (ARPES) experiments in a variety of correlated matter. Such kinks are unexpected from weakly interacting electrons and hence identifying their origin should lead to fundamental insights in strongly correlated matter. We devise a protocol for extracting the kink momentum and energy from the experimental data which relies solely on the two asymptotic tangents of each dispersion curve, away from the feature itself. It is thereby insensitive to the different shapes of the kinks as seen in experiments. The body of available data is then analyzed using this method. We proceed to discuss two alternate theoretical explanations of the origin of the kinks. Some theoretical proposals invoke local Bosonic excitations (Einstein phonons or other modes with spin or charge character), located exactly at the energy of observed kinks, leading to a momentum independent self energy of the electrons. A recent alternate is the theory of extremely correlated Fermi liquids (ECFL). This theory predicts kinks in the dispersion arising from a momentum dependent self energy of correlated electrons. We present the essential results from both classes of theories, and identify experimental features that can help distinguish between the two mechanisms. The ECFL theory is found to be consistent with currently available data on kinks in the nodal direction of cuprate superconductors, but conclusive tests require higher resolution energy distribution curve data.
We present detailed energy dispersions near the Fermi level on the monolayer perovskite ruthenate Sr2RuO4, determined by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. An orbital selectivity of the kink in the dispersion of Sr2RuO4 has been found: A kink for the Ru 4d_xy orbital is clearly observed, but not for the Ru 4d_yz and 4d_zx ones. The result provides insight into the origin of the kink.
We investigate the electronic dispersion of high-Tc superconductor on the basis of the two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model with the electron-phonon interaction together with the strong electron-electron interaction. In our model, it is shown across the hole-doped region of high-Tc superconductor that the electron-phonon interaction makes a dispersion kink, observed along the nodal direction, and that the small isotope effect appears on the electronic dispersion.
Ultrahigh resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy photons is used to study the detailed momentum dependence of the well-known nodal "kink" dispersion anomaly of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. We find that the kink's location transitions smoothly from a maximum binding energy of about 65 meV at the node of the d-wave superconducting gap to 55 meV roughly one-third of the way to the antinode. Meanwhile, the self-energy spectrum corresponding to the kink dramatically sharpens and intensifies beyond a critical point in momentum space. We discuss the possible bosonic spectrum in ener…
Recently, it was shown that strongly correlated metallic fermionic systems [Nature Phys. 3, 168 (2007)] generically display kinks in the dispersion of single fermions without the coupling to collective modes. Here we provide compelling evidence that the physical origin of these kinks are emerging internal collective modes of the fermionic systems. In the Hubbard model under study these modes are identified to be spin fluctuations which are the precursors of the spin excitations in the insulating phase. In spite of their damping the emergent modes give rise to signatures very similar to feature…
Motivated by the observation in copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors, we investigate the appearance of kinks in the electronic dispersion due to coupling to phonons for a system with strong electronic repulsion. We study a Hubbard model supplemented by an electron-phonon coupling of Holstein type within Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) utilizing Numerical Renormalization Group as impurity solver. Paramagnetic DMFT solutions in the presence of large repulsion show a kink only for large values of the electron-phonon coupling $λ$ or large doping and, contrary to the conventional electr…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements have established the phenomenon of kink in band dispersion of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors. However, systematic studies of the kink in electron-doped cuprates are still lacking experimentally. We performed $in$-$situ$ ARPES measurements on ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Ce}_x{\rm CuO}_{4\pmδ}$ (LCCO) thin films over a wide electron doping ($n$) range from 0.05 to 0.23. While the nodal kink is nearly invisible, an antinodal kink around 45 meV, surviving above 200 K, is observed for $n\sim0.05-0.19$, whose position is roughly indepe…
Electronic band dispersions in copper oxide superconductors have kinks around 70 meV that are typically attributed to coupling of electrons to a bosonic mode. We performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on overdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors to test the relationship between the superconducting transition temperature and electron-bosonic mode coupling. Remarkably, the kinks remain strong in the heavily overdoped region of the doping phase diagram of LSCO, even when the superconductivity completely disappears. This unexpected observation is incompati…
In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. The incoherent nature of the spectra suggests that the hopping-dominated dispersion occurs possibly with the assistance of local spin correlations. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate in the low energy region. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our cu…
We report the first comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeFeAsO, a parent compound of FeAs-based high temperature superconductors with a mangetic/structural transition at $\sim$150 K. In the magnetic ordering state, four hole-like Fermi surface sheets are observed near $Γ$(0,0) and the Fermi surface near M(+/-$π$,+/-$π$) shows a tiny electron-like pocket at M surrounded by four Dirac cone-like strong spots. The unusual Fermi surface topology deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. The electronic signature of the magnetic/structural transit…
The properties of condensed matter are determined by single-particle and collective excitations and their interactions. These quantum-mechanical excitations are characterized by an energy E and a momentum \hbar k which are related through their dispersion E_k. The coupling of two excitations may lead to abrupt changes (kinks) in the slope of the dispersion. Such kinks thus carry important information about interactions in a many-body system. For example, kinks detected at 40-70 meV below the Fermi level in the electronic dispersion of high-temperature superconductors are taken as evidence for …
We present GW based self-energy calculations for the state of coexisting spin-density wave and d-wave superconductivity in a series of cuprate superconductors. In these systems, the spin resonance spectrum exhibits the typical `hour-glass' form, whose upward and downward dispersion branches come from the gapped spin-wave and magnetic scattering of Cooper pairs, respectively. We show that the crossover between these two different dispersion features leads to an abrupt change in slope in the quasiparticle self-energy, and hence the low-energy kink commences in the single-particle quasiparticle s…
Employing dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations we show that the single particle spectral weight A(k,w) of the one-band two-dimensional Hubbard model displays a high energy kink in the quasiparticle dispersion followed by a steep dispersion of a broad peak similar to recent ARPES results reported for the cuprates. Based on the agreement between the Monte Carlo results and a simple calculation which couples the quasiparticle to spin fluctuations, we conclude that the kink and the broad spectral feature in the Hubbard model spectra is due to scattering with damped high energy spin f…
We present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic study of the high-Tc superconductor class (Sr/Ba){1-x}(K/Na)xFe2As2. By utilizing a photon-energy-modulation contrast and scattering geometry we report the Fermi surface and the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap, Delta(k). A prominent quasiparticle dispersion kink reflecting strong scattering processes is observed in a binding-energy range of 25-55 meV in the superconducting state, and the coherence length or the extent of the Cooper pair wave function is found to be about 20-angstrom, which is uncharacteristic of …
We study kinks in the electronic dispersion of a generic strongly correlated system by dynamic mean-field theory (DMFT). The focus is on doped systems away from particle-hole symmetry where valence fluctuations matter potentially. Three different algorithms are compared to asses their strengths and weaknesses, as well as to clearly distinguish physical features from algorithmic artifacts. Our findings extend a view previously established for half-filled systems where kinks reflect the coupling of the fermionic quasiparticles to emergent collective modes, which are identified here as spin fluct…
Evolution of the hole spectral function along the Gamma-(pi,pi) cut is studied in the antiferromagnetic state of the Hubbard model. The kink in the calculated hole dispersion, the sharp spectral-weight transfer between the branches, and the drastically suppressed coherent spectral weight near k=(0,0), as observed recently in the high-resolution ARPES studies of cuprate antiferromagnets, are shown to be strongly enhanced by finite-U double-occupancy effects. Together with the anomalous spin-wave dispersion observed earlier in high-resolution neutron-scattering studies, the present study provide…
Perovskite SrRuO3, a prototypical conductive ferromagnetic oxide, exhibits a kink in its band dispersion signalling the unusual electron dynamics therein. However, the origin of this kink remains elusive. By taking advantage of the combo of reactive molecular beam epitaxy and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically studied the evolution of the low-energy electronic structure of SrRuO3 films with thickness thinning down to nearly two-dimensional limit in a well-controlled way. The kink structure persists even in the 4-unit-cell-thick film. Moreover, through quantita…
One of the possible mechanisms of high Tc superconductivity is Cooper pairing with the help of bosons, which change the slope of the electronic dispersion as observed by photoemission. Giustino et al. calculated that in the high temperature superconductor La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 crystal lattice vibrations (phonons) should have a negligible effect on photoemission spectra and concluded that phonons do not play an important role. We show that the calculations employed by Giustino et al. fail to reproduce huge influence of electron-phonon coupling on important phonons observed in experiments. Thus one w…
The renormalization of quasiparticle (QP) dispersion in bilayer high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is investigated theoretically by examining respectively the interactions of the QP with spin fluctuations (SF) and phonons. It is illustrated that both interactions are able to give rise to a kink in the dispersion around the antinodes (near $(π,0)$). However, remarkable differences between the two cases are found for the peak/dip/hump structure in the lineshape, the QP weight, and the interlayer coupling effect on the kink, which are suggested to serve as a discriminance to single out the dominant interactio…
The list of two dimensional Dirac systems with a tilt in their Dirac cone spectrum is expanding, and now in addition to organic system $α$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ includes the two dimensional $8Pmmn$-borophene sheet, which allows for controlled doping by the gate voltage. We analytically calculate the polarization function of tilted Dirac cone for arbitrary tilt parameter, $0\le η<1$, and arbitrary doping. This enables us to find two interesting plasmonic effects solely caused by the tilt: (i) In addition to the standard plasmon oscillations, strong enough tilt, induces an additional linearly dispe…
Recently, dynamical mean field theory calculations have shown that kinks emerge in the real part of the self energy of strongly correlated metals close to the Fermi level. This gives rise to a similar behavior in the quasi-particle dispersion relation as well as in the electronic specific heat. Since f-electron systems are even more strongly correlated than the -hitherto studied- d-electron systems we apply the dynamical mean field approach with the numerical renormalization group method as impurity solver to study whether there are kinks in the periodic Anderson model.
Although the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid exhibits spin-charge separation and the electron is not an elementary excitation of the system, nevertheless an effective electronic dispersion may be defined by the frequency-dependent peak in the momentum distribution curve (MDC). The MDC is defined by considering the single hole spectral function $A^<(\vec{k},ω)$ as a function of $\vec{k}$ at a fixed frequency $ω$. We show the existence of a \emph{kink} in this dispersion for the spin-rotationally invariant Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at finite temperature. In the repulsive regime where the charge veloci…
Recent angular-resolved photoemission experiments on LaNiO$_3$ reported a renormalization of the Fermi velocity of $e_g$ quasiparticles, a kink in their dispersion at $ -0.2$ eV and a large broadening and weakened dispersion of the occupied $t_{2g}$ states. We show here that all these features result from electronic correlations and are quantitatively reproduced by calculations combining density-functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. The importance and general relevance of correlation effects in filled bands coupled by inter-orbital interactions to a partially-filled band are point…
We find that the heat capacity of a strongly correlated metal presents striking changes with respect to Landau Fermi liquid theory. In contrast with normal metals, where the electronic specific heat is linear at low temperature (with a T^3 term as a leading correction), a dynamical mean-field study of the correlated Hubbard model reveals a clear kink in the temperature dependence, marking a rapid change from a low-temperature linear behavior and a second linear regime with a reduced slope. Experiments on LiV2O4 support our findings, implying that correlated materials are more resistive to cool…
Using Angle-Resolved Photoemission (ARPES), we present the first observation of sharp quasiparticle-like peaks in a CMR manganite. We focus on the ($π$,0) regions of k-space and study their electronic scattering rates and dispersion kinks, uncovering the critical energy scales, momentum scales, and strengths of the interactions that renormalize the electrons. To identify these bosons we measured phonon dispersions in the energy range of the kink by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), finding a good match in both energy and momentum to the oxygen bond-stretching phonons.
We discuss interaction of strongly correlated electrons (described within the Hubbard model solved by dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT)) with Debye and Einstein phonons using recently developed DMFT+Sigma computational scheme. Electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is analyzed in adiabatic approximation (assuming the validity of Migdal theorem), allowing the neglect of EPI vertex corrections. This approach is valid for EPI coupling constant L < e_F/w_ph~10, where e_F is Fermi energy and w_ph is Debye or Einstein frequency. For moderate values of L only small changes in the electronic density of st…
I apply the newly developed dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) to the calculation of the electron and phonon dispersions in the two dimensional Holstein model. In contrast to previous work, the DCA enables the effects of spatial fluctuations (non-local corrections) to be examined. Approximations neglecting and incorporating lowest-order vertex corrections are investigated. I calculate the phonon density of states, the renormalised phonon dispersion, the electron dispersion and electron spectral functions. I demonstrate how vertex corrections stabilise the solution, stopping a catastrophic s…
I present results from an approach that extends the Eliashberg theory by systematic expansion in the vertex function; an essential extension at large phonon frequencies, even for weak coupling. In order to deal with computationally expensive double sums over momenta, a dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) approach is used to incorporate momentum dependence into the Eliashberg equations. First, I consider the effects of introducing partial momentum dependence on the standard Eliashberg theory using a quasi-local approximation; which I use to demonstrate that it is essential to include correcti…
We report the first measurement of the optical phonon dispersion in optimally doped single layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6+delta using inelastic x-ray scattering. We found a strong softening of the Cu-O bond stretching phonon at about q=(0.25,0,0) from 76 to 60 meV, similar to the one reported in other cuprates. A direct comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements taken on the same sample, revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy and momentum between the ARPES nodal kink and the soft part of the bond stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where…
High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on the electron-doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ high temperature superconductor. We have revealed a clear kink at $\sim$60 meV in the dispersion along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction, accompanied by a peak-dip-hump feature in the photoemission spectra. This indicates that the nodal electrons are coupled to collective excitations (bosons) in electron-doped superconductors, with the phonons as the most likely candidate of the boson. This finding has established a universality of nodal electron c…
It is shown that spectral functions within the extended t-J model, evaluated using the finite-temperature diagonalization of small clusters, exhibit the high-energy kink in single-particle dispersion consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission results on hole-doped cuprates. The kink and waterfall-like features persist up to large doping and to temperatures beyond $J$ hence the origin can be generally attributed to strong correlations and incoherent hole propagation at large binding energies. In contrast, our analysis predicts that electron-doped cuprates do not exhibit these phenomena…
The experimental finding of an ubiquitous kink in the nodal direction of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies of superconducting cuprates has been reproduced theoretically. Our model is built upon the Migdal-Eliashberg theory for the electron self-energy within the phonon-coupling scenario. Following this perturbative approach, a numerical evaluation of the bare band dispersion energy in terms of the electron-phonon coupling parameter $λ$ allows a unified description of the nodal-kink effect. Our study reveals that distinction between $λ$ and the technically defined mass-enhancement par…
The textbook knowledge of solid state physics is that the electronic specific heat shows a linear temperature dependence with the leading corrections being a cubic term due to phonons and a cubic-logarithmic term due to the interaction of electrons with bosons. We have shown that this longstanding conception needs to be supplemented since the generic behavior of the low-temperature electronic specific heat includes a kink if the electrons are sufficiently strongly correlated
We present a systematic photoemission study of the newly discovered high Tc superconductor class (Sr/Ba)1-xKxFe2As2. By utilizing a unique photon energy range and scattering geometry we resolve the details of the single particle dynamics of interacting electrons on the central Fermi surfaces of this series which shows overall strong coupling behavior (2D/kBTc = 6). Quasiparticle dispersion kinks are observed in a binding energy range of 15 to 50 meV which matches the magnetic excitation energy scales (parameterized by J1,J2). The size of the Cooper pair wavefunction is found to be less than 20…
Recent observation of a "kink" in single-particle dispersion in photoemission experiments on cuprate superconductors has initiated a heated debate over the issue of a boson that mediates the pairing in cuprates. If the "kink" is indeed caused by interaction with a bosonic excitation, then there are two possible candidates: phonons and spin fluctuations. Here, the role of anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in shaping the phase diagram of cuprate superconductors will be discussed. By using the local (momentum-integrated) dynamic spin susceptibility, recently measured in neutron scattering expe…
We investigate the interplay between strong electron correlations and charge-lattice interaction in cuprates. The coupling between half breathing bond stretching phonons and doped holes in the t-t'-J model is studied by limited phonon basis exact diagonalization method. Nonadiabatic electron-phonon interaction leads to the splitting of the phonon spectral function at half-way to the zone boundary at $\vec{q}_s=\{(\pm π/ 2, 0), (0, \pm π/ 2) \}$ and to low energy kink feature in the electron dispersion, in agreement with experimental observations. Another kink due to strong electron correlation…
Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$, we have made the first observation of a mass renormalization or "kink" in the E vs. $\vec k$ dispersion relation localized near $(π, 0)$. Compared to the kink observed along the nodal direction, this new effect is clearly stronger, appears at a lower energy near 40 meV, and is only present in the superconducting state. The kink energy scale defines a cutoff below which well-defined quasiparticle excitations occur. This effect is likely due to coupling to a bosonic excitation, with the most plausib…
We analyze the effects of a momentum-dependent self-energy on the photoemission momentum distribution curve (MDC) lineshape, dispersion and linewidth. We illustrate this general analysis by a detailed examination of nodal quasiparticles in high Tc cuprates. We use variational results for the nodal quasiparticle weight Z (which varies rapidly with hole doping x) and the low energy Fermi velocity $v_F^{low}$ (which is independent of x), to show that the high energy MDC dispersion $v_{high} = v_F^{low}/Z$, so that it is much larger than the bare (band structure) velocity and also increases strong…
We compute the one-particle spectral function and the optical conductivity for the 2-d Hubbard model on a square lattice. The computational method is cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) in which a 4-site Hubbard plaquette is embedded in a self-consistent bath. We obtain a `kink' feature in the dispersion of the spectral function and a mid-infrared (mid-IR) absorption peak in the optical conductivity, consistent with experimental data. Of the 256 plaquette states, only a single state which has d$_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry contributes to the mid-IR, thereby suggesting a direct link with the p…
We report the three-dimensional (3-D) momentum-resolved soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of the Fermi liquid LaNiO$_3$. The out-of-plane and in-plane cuts of the 3-D electron- and hole-Fermi surfaces (FSs) are observed by energy- and angle- dependent photoemission measurements. The energy bands forming the electron FS suggest an $ω^2$ dependence of the imaginary part of the self-energy and a `correlation kink' at an energy scale of 0.25 eV. In contrast, the bands which form nesting character hole FSs do not show kinks and match local density approximation calculations. The results indicat…
We perform investigation of Hubbard model with interaction between strongly correlated conducting electrons on a lattice with Debye phonons. To solve the problem generalized dynamical mean-field DMFT+Σmethod is employed with "external" self-energy Σ_ph corresponding to electron-phonon interaction. We present DMFT+Σ_ph results for densities of states and kinks in energy dispersions for a variety of model parameters, analyzing the interplay of recently discovered kinks of purely electronic nature and usual phonon kinks in the electronic spectrum.
In order to reveal many-body interactions in the three-dimensional (3D) perovskite manganite, we have performed an $in$ $situ$ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and investigated the behaviors of quasiparticles. We observe quasiparticle peaks around the Fermi momentum, both in the electron and the hole bands, and clear kinks throughout the hole Fermi surface in the ARPES band dispersion. The isotropic behavior sharply contrasts to the strong anisotropic quasiparticle excitation observed in layered manganites. These results suggest that polar…
Our detailed Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) study of $2H$-TaS$_2$, a canonical incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) material, illustrates pronounced many-body renormalization in the system, which is manifested by the presence of multiple kink structures in the electronic dispersions. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal that these kink structures persist even at temperatures higher than the charge density wave transition temperature $\it{T}_{\text{cdw}}\,$ and the energy locations of the kinks are practically temperature-independent. Correlating kink energies with t…
The normal state single particle spectral function of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, measured by the angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), has been considered both anomalous and crucial to understand. Here we show that an unprecedentedly detailed description of the data is provided by a spectral function arising from the Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid state of the t-J model proposed recently by Shastry. The description encompasses both laser and conventional synchrotron ARPES data on optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, and also conventional synchrotro…
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to image the emergence of substaintial dispersion anomalies in the electronic renormalization of the actinide compound UCoGa$_5$ which was presumed to belong to a conventional Fermi liquid family. Kinks or abrupt breaks in the slope of the quasiparticle dispersion are detected both at low ($\sim$130 meV) and high ($\sim$1 eV) binding energies below the Fermi energy, ruling out any significant contribution of phonons. We perform numerical calculations to demonstrate that the anomalies are adequately described by coupling between itinerant…
The reason for the appearance of two distinct bands in the photoemission of the single CuO$_2$ plane Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ near the Fermi level is discussed on the basis of the self-consistent solution of the two-dimensional t-J model.
We report on low-energy electronic structure and electronic correlations of K$_{0.65}$RhO$_2$, studied using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We observe a highly correlated hole pocket on the Fermi surface. We further notice that the correlations are momentum dependent. Most importantly, two $kinks$ at binding energies of 75 meV and 195 meV have been observed from the band dispersion in the vicinity of the Fermi level. While the low energy $kink$ at 75 meV can be understood as a result of the electron-…
Properties of low-energy excitations in one-dimensional superconductors and density-wave systems are examined by the bosonization technique. In addition to the usual spin and charge quantum numbers, a new, independently measurable attribute is introduced to describe elementary, low-energy excitations. It can be defined as a number w which determines, in multiple of $π$, how many times the phase of the order parameter winds as an excitation is transposed from far left to far right. The winding number is zero for electrons and holes with conventional quantum numbers, but it acquires a nontrivial…
We study the charge-density dynamics within the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the presence of long-range Coulomb interaction across the metal-insulator transition point. To take into account strong correlations we start from self-consistent extended dynamical mean-field theory and include non-local dynamical vertex corrections through a ladder approximation to the polarization operator. This is necessary to fulfill charge conservation and to describe plasmons in the correlated state. The calculated plasmon spectra are qualitatively different from those in the random-phase approxima…
Despite the intensive efforts for determining the mechanism that causes high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxide materials, no consensus on the pairing mechanism has been reached. Recent advances in high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies have suggested that a sizeable electron-phonon coupling exists as the principal cause for kinks in the dispersion relations (energy versus wave vector) of the electronic states. Here, we report on a systematic study about the influence of the electron-phonon coupling parameter "$λ$" in the electronic quasiparticle dispersions alo…
Recent ARPES experiments in cuprates superconductors show a kink in the electron dispersion near the Fermi energy. This kink coexists with a linear frequency dependence of the imaginary part of the electron self-energy. In this paper we show that both features could be accounted for if an electron-phonon interaction is included in a model where the electrons are described by a marginal Fermi liquid theory. Phonons provide the energy scale seen in the experiments but the quasiparticle weight at the Fermi level is zero. At high binding energy, in agreement with the experiment, the electron dispe…
A variational ansatz for momentum eigenstates of translation invariant quantum spin chains is formulated. The matrix product state ansatz works directly in the thermodynamic limit and allows for an efficient implementation (cubic scaling in the bond dimension) of the variational principle. Unlike previous approaches, the ansatz includes topologically non-trivial states (kinks, domain walls) for systems with symmetry breaking. The method is benchmarked using the spin-1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet and the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and we obtain surprisingly accurate results.
We show that a strongly renormalized band of polaronic quasiparticle excitations is induced at the Fermi level of an interacting many-electron system on increasing the coupling of the electrons to local phonons. We give results for the local density of states at zero temperature both for the electrons and phonons. The polaronic quasiparticles satisfy Luttinger's theorem for all regimes considered, and their dispersion shows a kink similar to that observed experimentally in copper oxides. We calculate the quasiparticle weight factor $z$ and deduce the local effective inter-quasiparticle interac…
The correlated electronic structure of SrVO3 has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using in-situ prepared thin films. Pronounced features of band renormalization have been observed: a sharp kink ~60 meV below the Fermi level (EF) and a broad so-called "high-energy kink" ~0.3 eV below EF as in the high-Tc cuprates although SrVO3 does not show magnetic fluctuations. We have deduced the self-energy in a wide energy range by applying the Kramers-Kronig relation to the observed spectra. The obtained self-energy clearly shows a large energy scale of ~0.7 eV which is attr…
We present a framework to determine nonequilibrium steady states in strongly correlated electron systems in the presence of dissipation. This is demonstrated for a correlated electron (Falicov-Kimball) model attached to a heat bath and irradiated by an intense pump light, for which an exact solution is obtained with the Floquet method combined with the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. On top of a Drude-like peak indicative of photometallization as observed in recent pump-probe experiments, new nonequilibrium phenomena are predicted to emerge, where the optical conductivity exhibits …
High-harmonic generation (HHG) in crystalline solids have been examined so far on the basis of one-body energy-band structures arising from electron itineracy in a periodic potential. Here, we show emergence of HHG signals which are attributed to dynamics of many-body states in a low-dimensional correlated electron system. An interacting fermion model and its effective pseudo-spin model on a one-dimensional dimer-type lattice are analyzed. Observed HHG signals in a spontaneously symmetry-broken state, where charge densities are polarized inside of dimer units, show threshold behavior with resp…
Using the bosonization approach we study fermionic systems with a nonlinear dispersion relation in dimension d>2. We explicitly show how the band curvature gives rise to interaction terms in the bosonic version of the model. Although these terms are perturbatively irrelevant in relation to the Landau Fermi liquid fixed point, they become relevant perturbations when instabilities take place. Using a coherent state path integral technique we built up the effective action that governs the dynamics of the Fermi surface fluctuations. We consider the combined effect of fermionic interactions and ban…
The magnetoresistance (MR) of CeCoIn_5 is notably different from that in many conventional metals. We show that a pronounced crossover from negative to positive MR at elevated temperatures and fixed magnetic fields is determined by the scaling behavior of quasiparticle effective mass. At a quantum critical point (QCP) this dependence generates kinks (crossover points from fast to slow growth) in thermodynamic characteristics (like specific heat, magnetization etc) at some temperatures when a strongly correlated electron system transits from the magnetic field induced Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) …
Quantum transitions between the Mott insulator and metals by controlling filling in two-dimensional square lattice are characterized by a large dynamical exponent $z=4$ where the origin of unusual metallic properties near the Mott insulator are ascribed to the proximity of the transition. The scaling near the transition indicates the formation of flat dispersion area due to singular momentum dependence of the single-particle renormalization. The flat dispersion controls critical properties of the Mott transition. An instability of the flat dispersion to the d-wave superconducting order is disc…
