[Background:] Recent work found that core excitation can be important in extracting structure information from (d,p) reactions. [Purpose:] Our objective is to systematically explore the role of core excitation in (d,p) reactions, and understand the origin of the dynamical effects. [Method:] Based on the particle-rotor model of $n+^{10}$Be, we generate a number of models with a range of separation energies ($S_n=0.1-5.0$ MeV), while maintaining a significant core excited component. We then apply the latest extension of the momentum-space based Faddeev method, including dynamical core excitation in the reaction mechanism to all orders, to the $^{10}$Be(d,p)$^{11}$Be like reactions, and study the excitation effects for beam energies from $E_d=15-90$ MeV. [Results:] We study the resulting angular distributions and the differences between the spectroscopic factor that would be extracted from the cross sections, when including dynamical core excitation in the reaction, to that of the original structure model. We also explore how different partial waves affect the final cross section. [Conclusions:] Our results show a strong beam energy dependence of the extracted spectroscopic factors that become smaller for intermediate beam energies. This dependence increases for loosely bound systems.
The internal excitation of nuclei after multi-nucleon transfer is estimated by using the time-dependent mean-field theory. Transfer probabilities for each channel as well as the energy loss after re-separation are calculated. By combining these two informations, we show that the excitation energy distribution of the transfer fragments can be obtained separately for the different transfer channels. The method is applied to the reaction involving a $^{238}$U beam on a $^{12}$C target, which has recently been measured at GANIL. It is shown that the excitation energy calculated with the microscopi…
The core excitation, being an important reaction mechanism, so far is not properly included in most calculations of three-body nuclear reactions. We aim to include the excitation of the core nucleus using an exact Faddeev-type framework for nuclear reactions in the three-body (core + neutron + proton) system. We employ Alt, Grassberger, and Sandhas (AGS) integral equations for the three-particle transition operators and solve them in the momentum-space framework. The Coulomb interaction is included via the method of screening and renormalization. We calculate elastic, inelastic, and transfer r…
Three-body nuclear reactions in two-nucleon plus core systems are described in the framework of exact scattering equations including the core excitation. A nucleon-core optical potential is constructed that can be easily adjusted to the reference potential and thereby to the experimental two-body data, if available. This constitutes an important improvement over the simple deformation of the potential used previously that violated the original fit to the data. Predictions for elastic, inelastic, and transfer reactions involving $^{10}{Be}$ and $^{24}{Mg}$ nuclear cores are obtained. The new op…
In this work, we reexamine the extension of the CDCC formalism to include target excitation and apply it to a variety of reactions to study the effect of breakup on inelastic cross sections. We use a transformed oscillator basis to discretize the continuum of the projectiles in the different reactions and use the extended CDCC method developed in this work to solve the resulting coupled differential equations. A new code has been developed to perform the calculations. Reactions 58Ni(d, d) 58Ni*, 24Mg(d, d) 24Mg* , 144Sm( 6Li, 6Li) 144Sm* and 9Be( 6Li, 6Li) 9Be* are studied. Satisfactory agreem…
Previous studies of $(d,p)$ reactions in three-body (proton, neutron, nuclear core) systems revealed a nontrivial effect of the core excitation: the transfer cross section cannot be factorized into the spectroscopic factor and the single-particle cross section obtained neglecting the core excitation. This observable, up to a kinematic factor, is the angular distribution of the core nucleus in the $(p,d)$ reaction. The study of the core excitation effect for the most closely related observable in the $(p,pn)$ three-body breakup, i.e., the core angular distribution, is aimed in the present work.…
The excitation of the carbon $2^+$ state at 4.439 MeV by $70-150$ MeV electron impact and its subsequent decay to the ground state by photon emission is described within the distorted-wave Born approximation. The transition densities are obtained from the nuclear quasiparticle phonon model. The photon angular distributions are compared with earlier results and with experiment, including the influence of bremsstrahlung. Predictions for spin asymmetries in the case of polarized electron impact are also made.
${}^{20}\mathrm{O}(d,p){}^{21}\mathrm{O}$ transfer reactions are described using momentum-space Faddeev-type equations for transition operators and including the vibrational excitation of the ${}^{20}\mathrm{O}$ core. The available experimental cross section data at 10.5 MeV/nucleon beam energy for the ${}^{21}\mathrm{O}$ ground state $\frac52^+$ and excited state $\frac12^+$ are quite well reproduced by our calculations including the core excitation. Its effect can be roughly simulated reducing the single-particle cross section by the corresponding spectroscopic factor. Consequently, the extr…
Coherent one-particle one-hole (1p1h) excitations have given us effective insights into general nuclear excitations. However, the two-particle two-hole (2p2h) excitation beyond 1p1h is now recognized as critical for the proper description of experimental data of various nuclear responses. The spin-flip charge-exchange reactions $^{48}{\rm Ca}(p,n)^{48}{\rm Sc}$ are investigated to clarify the role of the 2p2h effect on their cross sections. The Fermi transition of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ via the $(p,n)$ reaction is also investigated in order to demonstrate our framework. The transition density is calc…
A new value for the emission probability of 137.144keV g-ray of 186gRe decay are re-recommended to be 9.47+-0.03 (%). From this new g-ray emission probability, the measured cross sections for 187Re(n,2n)186mRe and 187Re(n,2n)186gRe reactions around 14MeV are evaluated, and the total cross section for 187Re(n,2n)186m+gRe reaction at 14.8MeV is recommended to be 2213+-116 mb. The UNF code are adopted to calculate the total cross sections for 187Re(n,2n)186m+gRe reaction below 20 MeV fitting to the recommended value 2213+-116 mb at 14.8MeV using a set of optimum neutron optical potential paramete…
For $N=Z$ odd-odd nuclei, a three-body model assuming two valence particles and an inert core can provide an understanding of pairing correlations in the ground state and spin-isospin excitations. However, since residual core-nucleon interactions can have a significant impact on these quantities, the inclusion of core excitations in the model is essential for useful calculation to be performed. The effect of core excitations must be included in order to gain a detailed understanding of both the ground state and spin-isospin properties of these systems. To this end, we include the vibrational e…
We investigate the applicability of a random-matrix model to the description of non-collective excitations in heavy-ion reactions around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we study fusion in the reaction $^{16}$O + $^{208}$Pb, taking account of the known non-collective excitations in the $^{208}$Pb nucleus. We show that the random-matrix model for the corresponding couplings reproduces reasonably well the exact calculations, obtained using empirical deformation parameters. This implies that the model may provide a powerful method for systems in which the non-collective couplings are not so well…
In this paper an attempt was to measure, the excitation functions of $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, 4n)$^{177}$Re, $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, 5n)$^{176}$Re, $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, $α$n)$^{176}$Ta, $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, $α$2n)$^{175}$Ta , $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, $α$3n)$^{174}$Ta , $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, $α$4n)$^{173}$Ta, and $^{169}$Tm($^{12}$C, 2$α$2n)$^{171}$Lu reaction channels populated in the interaction of $^{12}$C projectile with $^{169}$Tm target were considered in order to investigate the mechanisms of complete and incomplete fusion reactions. The theoretically predicted excitation functions using PACE4 code …
The excitation functions for (n,p) reactions from reaction threshold to 20 MeV on four stable Iron isotopes viz; 54Fe,56Fe,57Fe and 58Fe were calculated using Talys-1.2 nuclear model code, this essentially involves fitting a set of global parameters. An excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental data is obtained with minimal effort on parameter fitting and only one free parameter called 'Shell damping factor' has been adjusted. This is very importance to the validation of nuclear model approaches with increased predictive power. The systematic decrease in (n, p) cross-sections…
We investigate the effect of single-particle excitations on heavy-ion reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we describe single-particle degrees of freedom with the random matrix theory and solve the coupled-channels equations for one-dimensional systems. We find that the single-particle excitations hinder the penetrability at energies above the barrier, leading to a smeared barrier distribution. This indicates that the single-particle excitations provide a promising way to explain the difference in a quasi-elastic barrier distribution recently observed in $^{20}$Ne + $^{…
We describe low-lying collective excitations of atomic nuclei with the multi-reference covariant density functional theory, and combine them with coupled-channels calculations for heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we use the calculated transition strengths among several collective states as inputs to the coupled-channels calculations. This approach provides a natural way to describe anharmonic multi-phonon excitations as well as a deviation of rotational excitations from a simple rigid rotor. We apply this method to subbarrier fusion reactions of $…
We extend our previous calculation of the breakup of 11Be using Halo Effective Field Theory and the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation to include an effective 10Be-n-target force. The force is constructed to account for the virtual excitation of 10Be to its low-lying 2+ excited state. In the case of breakup on a 12C target this improves the description of the neutron-energy and angular spectra, especially in the vicinity of the 11Be 5/2+ state. By fine-tuning the range parameters of the three-body force, a reasonable description of data in the region of the 3/2+ 11Be state can also be obtained. T…
Isobaric single charge-exchange reactions, changing nuclear charges by one unit but leaving the mass partitions unaffected, have been for the first time investigated by peripheral collisions of $^{112}$Sn ions accelerated up to 1\textit{A} GeV at the GSI facilities. The high-resolving power of the FRS spectrometer allows us to obtain $(p, n)$-type isobaric charge-exchange cross sections with an uncertainty of $3.5\%$ and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic components in the missing-energy spectra of the ejectiles. The inelastic component is associated to the excitation of the $Δ$(1232) iso…
178m2-Hf is an extremely interesting isomeric state due to its potential energy capacity level. One possible way to obtain it is by irradiation of a nat-Ta sample with a high-current proton accelerator. Up to now, there was no information in the international experimental nuclear data base (EXFOR) for this reaction. Irradiations of nat-Ta samples performed for other purposes provide an opportunity to address this question. This paper presents the 172m2-Hf independent production cross-sections determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The nat-Ta(p,x)172m2-Hf excitation function is studied in the 20…
The excitation spectra in the deformed nucleus 228Th have been studied by means of the (p,t)-reaction, using the Q3D spectrograph facility at the Munich Tandem accelerator. The angular distributions of tritons were measured for about 110 excitations seen in the triton spectra up to 2.5 MeV. Firm 0+ assignments are made for 17 excited states by comparison of experimental angular distributions with the calculated ones using the CHUCK3 code. Assignments up to spin 6+ are made for other states. Sequences of states are selected which can be treated as rotational bands and as multiplets of excitatio…
The resonant break-up of $^{19}$C on protons measured at RIKEN [Phys. Lett. B 660, 320 (2008)] is analyzed in terms of a valence-core model for $^{19}$C including possible core excitations. The analysis of the angular distribution of a prominent peak appearing in the relative-energy spectrum could be well described with this model and is consistent with the previous assignment of $5/2^{+}$ for this state. Inclusion of core-excitation effects are found to be essential to give the correct magnitude of the cross section for this state. By contrast, the calculation assuming an inert $^{18}$C core …
The fission fragment mass distributions have been measured in the reactions 16O + 184W and 19F+ 181Ta populating the same compound nucleus 200Pb? at similar excitation energies. It is found that the widths of the mass distribution increases monotonically with excitation energy, indicating the absence of quasi-fission for both reactions. This is contrary to two recent claims of the presence of quasi-fission in the above mentioned reactions.
The effect of core excitations in transfer reactions of the form A(d, p)B has been found to affect significantly the calculated cross sections and to depend strongly and non-linearly on the incident deuteron energy in Faddeev/AGS calculations. Our goal is to investigate these effects within a coupled-channels formulation of the scattering problem which, in addition of being computationally less demanding than the Faddeev counterpart, may help shed some light into the physical interpretation of the cited effects. We use an extended version of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) me…
Semimicroscopical description of the simplest photonuclear reactions accompanied by excitation of the giant dipole resonance in medium-heavy mass nuclei
Understanding of inclusive one-nucleon knockout reactions for long-lived fission fragments (LLFPs) is crucial for nuclear transmutation studies. However, the particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS) severely overshoots the inclusive one-nucleon knockout cross sections sigma_-1N. Therefore development of a reaction model for describing the inclusive one-nucleon knockout processes is necessary. A key is specification of the position and the momentum of a nucleon inside a nucleus to be struck by the incident nucleon. In this paper the semiclassical distorted wave model incorporating t…
We study reactions between neutron-rich $^{132}$Sn nucleus and $^{96}$Zr within a dynamic microscopic theory at energies in the vicinity of the ion-ion potential barrier peak, and we compare the properties to those of the stable system $^{124}$Sn+$^{96}$Zr. The calculations are carried out on a three-dimensional lattice using the density-constrained Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock method. In particular, we calculate the dynamic excitation energy $E^*(t)$ and the quadrupole moment of the dinuclear system, $Q_{20}(t)$, during the initial stages of the heavy-ion collision. Capture cross sections for …
The excitation spectra in the deformed nucleus 232U have been studied by means of the (p,t) reaction, using the Q3D spectrograph facility at the Munich Tandem accelerator. The angular distributions of tritons were measured for 162 excitations seen in the triton spectra up to 3.25 MeV. 0+ assignments are made for 13 excited states by comparison of experimental angular distributions with the calculated ones using the CHUCK3 code. Assignments up to spin 6+ are made for other states. Sequences of states are selected which can be treated as rotational bands. Moments of inertia have been derived fro…
Conventional coupled-channels analyses, that take account of only the collective excitations of the colliding nuclei, have failed to reproduce the different behavior of the experimental quasi-elastic barrier distributions for the $^{20}$Ne + $^{90,92}$Zr systems. To clarify the origins of this difference, we investigate the effect of non-collective excitations of the Zr isotopes. Describing these excitations in a random-matrix model, we explicitly take them into account in our coupled-channels calculations. The non-collective excitations are capable of reproducing the observed smearing of the …
To complete earlier studies of the properties of the electric pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) obtained in various nuclear reactions, the excitation of the 1$^-$ states in $^{140}$Ce by $(e,e')$ scattering for momentum transfers $q=0.1-1.2$~fm$^{-1}$ is calculated within the plane-wave and distorted-wave Born approximations. The excited states of the nucleus are described within the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA), but also within the Quasiparticle-Phonon Model (QPM) by accounting for the coupling to complex configurations. It is demonstrated that the excitation mechanism of the PD…
The angular distributions of fission fragments for the $^{32}$S+$^{184}$W reaction at center-of-mass energies of 118.8, 123.1, 127.3, 131.5, 135.8, 141.1 and 144.4 MeV were measured. The experimental fission excitation function is obtained. The fragment angular anisotropy ($\mathcal{A}_{\rm exp}$) is found by extrapolating the each fission angular distributions. The measured fission cross sections of the $^{32}$S+$^{182,184}$W reaction are decomposed into fusion-fission, quasifission and fast fission contributions by the dinuclear system model. The total evaporation residue excitation function…
The coupled-channels method has been a standard tool in analyzing heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. We investigate three simplifications usually adopted in the coupled-channels calculations. These are i) the exclusion of non-collective excitations, ii) the assumption of coordinate independent coupling strengths, and iii) the harmonic oscillator approximation for multi-phonon excitations. In connection to the last point, we propose a novel microscopic method based on the beyond-mean-field approach in order to take into account the anharmonic effects of collectiv…
We demonstrate, within symmetry unrestricted time-dependent density functional theory, the existence of new effects in low-energy nuclear reactions which originate from superfluidity. The dynamics of the pairing field induces solitonic excitations in the colliding nuclear systems, leading to qualitative changes in the reaction dynamics. The solitonic excitation prevents collective energy dissipation and effectively suppresses fusion cross section. We demonstrate how the variations of the total kinetic energy of the fragments can be traced back to the energy stored in the superfluid junction of…
For studying the collective pairing excitations of nuclei, the two-nucleon transfer reactions in superfluid nuclei (the pairing gap of the ground state is not zero), in particular, the (p,t) reaction, are of the greatest interest. A simple model of monopole pairing excitations in superfluid nuclei on the basis of the semiclassical time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory in the limit of small amplitudes is considered. Using the anomalous density response function, the monopole pairing mode in the energy region of double pairing gap and the variation of the pairing gap associated with this…
Sensitivity to multi-phonon excitations in heavy-ion fusion reactions
Measured cross sections for the fusion of {64}Ni with {64}Ni, {74}Ge, and {100}Mo targets are analyzed in a coupled-channels approach. The data for the {64}Ni target above 0.1 mb are reproduced by including couplings to the low-lying 2^+ and 3^- states and the mutual and two-phonon excitations of these states. The calculations become more challenging as the fusing nuclei become softer and heavier, and excitations to multi-phonon states start to play an increasingly important role. Thus it is necessary to include up to four-phonon excitations in order to reproduce the data for the {64}Ni+{74}Ge…
Nuclear Field Theory of structure and reactions is confronted with observations made on neutron halo dripline nuclei, resulting in the prediction of a novel (symbiotic) mode of nuclear excitation, and on the observation of the virtual effect of the halo phenomenon in the apparently non-halo nucleus $^7$Li. This effect is forced to become real by intervening the virtual process with an external (t,p) field which, combined with accurate predictive abilities concerning the absolute differential cross section, reveals an increase of a factor 2 in the cross section due to the presence of halo groun…
