We investigate the effect of single-particle excitations on heavy-ion reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we describe single-particle degrees of freedom with the random matrix theory and solve the coupled-channels equations for one-dimensional systems. We find that the single-particle excitations hinder the penetrability at energies above the barrier, leading to a smeared barrier distribution. This indicates that the single-particle excitations provide a promising way to explain the difference in a quasi-elastic barrier distribution recently observed in $^{20}$Ne + $^{90,92}$Zr systems.
Collective reaction paths for fusion reactions, $^{16}$O+$α$ $\rightarrow$ $^{20}$Ne and $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O $\rightarrow$ $^{32}$S, are microscopically determined, on the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method. The collective path is maximally decoupled from other intrinsic degrees of freedom. The reaction paths turn out to deviate from those obtained with standard mean-field calculations with constraints on quadrupole and octupole moments. The potentials and inertial masses defined in the ASCC method are calculated along the reaction paths. The sub-barrier f…
We investigate the applicability of a random-matrix model to the description of non-collective excitations in heavy-ion reactions around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, we study fusion in the reaction $^{16}$O + $^{208}$Pb, taking account of the known non-collective excitations in the $^{208}$Pb nucleus. We show that the random-matrix model for the corresponding couplings reproduces reasonably well the exact calculations, obtained using empirical deformation parameters. This implies that the model may provide a powerful method for systems in which the non-collective couplings are not so well…
In this paper, we review the roles of collective modes in nuclear reactions. We emphaize the strong couplings of various collective states with the monopole and quadrupole motions. In inelastic excitation, these couplings can be seen as an important source of anharmonicity in the multiphonon spectrum. In fusion reaction, the breathing and quadrupole motions strongly affects the oscillation of protons against neutrons. Finally, the modification of the collective properties induced by a large amplitude dilution might be the origin of the nuclear multifragmentation, directly related to the nuclea…
Fluid dynamical models preceded the first heavy ion accelerator experiments, and led to the main trend of this research since then. In recent years fluid dynamical processes became a dominant direction of research in high energy heavy ion reactions. The Quark-gluon Plasma formed in these reactions has low viscosity, which leads to significant fluctuations and turbulent instabilities. One has to study and separate these two effects, but this is not done yet in a systematic way. Here we present a few selected points of the early developments, the most interesting collective flow instabilities, t…
We propose a numerical method to determine the optimal collective reaction path for the nucleus-nucleus collision, based on the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method. We use an iterative method combining the imaginary-time evolution and the finite amplitude method, for the solution of the ASCC coupled equations. It is applied to the simplest case, the $α-α$ scattering. We determine the collective path, the potential, and the inertial mass. The results are compared with other methods, such as the constrained Hartree-Fock method, the Inglis's cranking formula, and the adi…
Towards the microscopic theoretical description for large amplitude collective dynamics, we calculate the coefficients of inertial masses for low-energy nuclear reactions. Under the scheme of energy density functional, we apply the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method, as well as the Inglis' cranking formula to calculate the inertias for the translational and the relative motions, in addition to those for the rotational motion. Taking the scattering between two $α$ particles as an example, we investigate the impact of the time-odd components of the mean-field potential…
The collective clusterization process, proposed for intermediate mass fragments (IMFs, 4$<$A$\le$28, 2$<$Z$\le$14) emitted from the hot and rotating compound nuclei formed in low energy reactions, is extended further to include also the emission of light particles (LPs, A$\le$4, Z$\le$2) from the fusion-evaporation residues. Both the LPs and IMFs are treated as the dynamical collective mass motion of preformed clusters through the barrier. Compared to IMFs, LPs are shown to have different characteristics, and the predictions of our, so-called, dynamical cluster-decay model are similar to those…
The nuclear collective excitations are studied within Landau Fermi liquid theory. By using the nucleon-nucleon interaction of the linear sigma-omega model, the nuclear collective excitation energies of different values of $l$ are obtained, which are fitted with the centroid energies of the giant resonances of spherical nuclei, respectively. In addition, it is pointed out that the isovector giant resonances except l=1 correspond to the modes that protons are in the creation state and neutrons are in the annihilation state, and vice versa. Some mixtures of the nuclear collective excitation state…
The recent progress on the study of the collective excitation in relativistic nuclear matter is reviewed. The collective excitation modes are derived by meson propagators in nuclear matter. The mesons we study are $σ, ω, γ$ and $π$ mesons. For pion, we derived not only the relativistic particle - hole, delta - hole excitations but also antiparticle excitations, such as particle - antiparticle, antidelta - particle, delta - antiparticle excitations. By calculating the dispersion relation and the spin - isospin dependent response function, the effects of all these excitation are studied.
In the framework of mean-field based transport approaches, we discuss recent results concerning collective motion and low-energy heavy ion reactions involving neutron-rich systems. We focus on aspects which are particularly sensitive to the isovector terms of the nuclear effective interaction and the corresponding symmetry energy. As far as collective excitations are concerned, we discuss the mixed nature of dipole oscillations in neutron-rich systems. On the other hand, for reactions close to the Coulomb barrier, we investigate the structure of pre-equilibrium collective dipole oscillations, …
The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian was used to describe the low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Ru, Pd, Te, Ba and Nd. The Strutinsky collective potential and cranking inertial functions were obtained using the Nilsson potential. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not contain any free parameter.
Collective inertial mass coefficients with respect to translational, relative, and rotational motions are microscopically calculated, along the collective reaction path self-consistently determined, based on the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method. The impact of the time-odd component of the mean-field potential on the inertial masses are investigated. The results are compared with those calculated with the cranking formulae. The inertial masses based on the ASCC method reproduce the exact total nuclear mass for the translational motion as well as the exact reduced ma…
The relation of the shell, collective and cluster models of the atomic nuclei is discussed from the viewpoint of symmetries. In the fifties the U(3) symmetry was found as their common part for a single shell problem. For multi major-shell excitations, considered here, the U(3)$\otimes$U(3) dynamical symmetry turns out to be their intersection.
The collective excitation of nuclear matter is analyzed in a bosonized Landau Fermi liquid model. When the nonlinear self-interacting terms of scalar mesons are included in Walecka model, the collective excitation energy of nuclear matter can be obtained self-consistently, and the calculation results are consistent with the corresponding experimental data of the nucleus ${}^{208}Pb$ when the quantum number of the orientation of the total spin $m$ is zero. The cases with the nonzero $m$ values are also studied, and it is found that the collective excitation energy of nuclear matter decreases wi…
Conventional coupled-channels analyses, that take account of only the collective excitations of the colliding nuclei, have failed to reproduce the different behavior of the experimental quasi-elastic barrier distributions for the $^{20}$Ne + $^{90,92}$Zr systems. To clarify the origins of this difference, we investigate the effect of non-collective excitations of the Zr isotopes. Describing these excitations in a random-matrix model, we explicitly take them into account in our coupled-channels calculations. The non-collective excitations are capable of reproducing the observed smearing of the …
Quadrupole excitations of even-even Ru and Pd isotopes are described within microscopic approach based on the general collective Bohr model which includes the effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations. The excitation energies and E2 transition probabilities observed in 104-114Ru and 106-110Pd are reproduced in the frame of the calculation containing no free parameters.
Using a theory of large amplitude collective motion, the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method, we derive reaction path for the fusion process at sub-barrier energies. The collective Hamiltonian to describe the fusion process is constructed, based on the obtained reaction path and canonical variables. We study the reaction of N=Z stable nuclei, alpha+16O, 16O+16O, and alpha+12C. The results suggest that, after two nuclei touch, the reaction path is significantly deviated from the simple relative motion, which may affect the deep sub-barrier fusion cross section.
We apply the time-dependent variational principle, the nuclear field theory, and the boson expansion method to the Lipkin model to discuss anharmonicities of collective vibrational excitations. It is shown that all of these approaches lead to the same anharmonicity to leading order in the number of particles. Comparison with the exact solution of the Lipkin model shows that these theories reproduce it quite well.
Conditions under which compression occurs and collective expansion develops in energetic reactions of heavy nuclei, are analyzed, together with their effects on emitted light baryons and pions. Within transport simulations, it is shown that shock fronts perpendicular to beam axis form in head-on reactions. The fronts separate hot compressed matter from normal. As impact parameter increases, the angle of inclination of the fronts relative to beam axis decreases, and in-between the fronts a weak tangential discontinuity develops. Hot matter exposed to the vacuum in directions perpendicular to sh…
We have carried out a unified microscopic study of electric monopole, quadrupole and magnetic dipole excitations in fast rotating nuclei undergoing backbending, with special attention at the magnetic excitations. We found, among other results, that the strength of the orbital magnetic dipole excitations (scissors mode) gets enhanced by more than a factor four at high rotational frequency, above the backbending region. We provide a physical explanation for such an enhancement.
The ATDHFB approach has been applied for a study of properties of collective quadrupole states in several transactinide nuclei: 238U, 240Pu, 242Pu, 246Cm, 248Cm, 250Cf and 252Cf. Calculated energies and B(E2) transition probabilities are in a reasonable agreement with experimental data. Results concerning superdeformed collective states in the 240Pu nucleus are also presented.
We study the role of impact parameter on the collective flow and its disappearance for different mass asymmetric reactions. The mass asymmetry is varied from 0 to 0.7 keeping the total mass of the system fixed. Our results clearly indicate a significant role of impact parameter on the collective flow and its disappearance for the mass asymmetric reactions. The impact parameter dependence is also found to vary with mass asymmetry of the reaction.
Background: Collective excitations of nuclei and their theoretical descriptions provide an insight into the structure of nuclei. Replacing traditional phenomenological interactions with unitarily transformed realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions increases the predictive power of the theoretical calculations for exotic or deformed nuclei. Purpose: Extend the application of realistic interactions to deformed nuclei and compare the performance of different interactions, including phenomenological interactions, for collective excitations in the sd-shell. Method: Ground-state energies and charge r…
Collective flow of Lambda hyperons in heavy ion reactions at SIS energies is investigated. It is found that a $Λ$ mean field constructed on the basis of the quark model leads to a good description of the experimental data of the in-plane transverse flow of $Λ$'s. The attractive mean field can also give rise to an additional "virtual" $Λ$ radial flow directed inwards, which is reflected by a "concave" structure of the transverse mass spectrum of the $Λ$ hyperons emitted at midrapidity. The $Λ$ radial flow is found to exhibit a strong mass dependence: The flow is visible in the Ni+Ni system, but…
Recently measured high precision data of fusion excitation function have enabled a detailed study on the effects of nuclear collective excitations on fusion reactions. Using such highly accurate data of the $^{16}$O + $^{144,148}$Sm reactions, we discuss the anharmonic properties of collective phonon excitations in $^{144,148}$Sm nuclei. It is shown that subbarrier fusion reactions are strongly affected by the anharmonic effects and thus offer an alternative method to extract the static quadrupole moments of phonon states in a spherical nucleus.
The construction of differential cross sections as a function of excitation energy for systems with a collection of low- and high-lying intrinsic vibrational modes has been attempted in the past. A prescription is proposed that simplifies the implementation of such calculation schemes with a remarkable reduction in computational time.
We formulate a continuum linear response theory on the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism in the coordinate space representation in order to describe low-lying and high-lying collective excitations which couple to one-particle and two-particle continuum states. Numerical analysis is done for the neutron drip-line nucleus $^{24}$O. A low-lying collective mode that emerges above the continuum threshold with large neutron strength is analyzed. The collective state is sensitive to the density-dependence of the pairing. The present theory satisfies accurately the energy weighted sum rul…
We estimate the dipole radiation emitted in fusion processes. We show that a classical bremsstrahlung approach can account for both the preequilibrium and the thermal photon emission. We give an absolute evaluation of the pre-equilibrium component due to the charge asymmetry in the entrance channel and we study the energy and mass dependence in order to optimize the observation. This dynamical dipole radiation could be a relevant cooling mechanism in the fusion path. We stress the interest in experiments with the new available radioactive beams.
We present an algebraic U(7) model for baryons which encompasses both single-particle and collective forms of quark dynamics. The mass operator by construction preserves the permutation symmetry between identical quarks. The underlying geometric structure of baryons is discussed in terms of a rigid rotating and vibrating oblate top shape. The model is applied to the mass spectrum of nonstrange baryons.
A relativistic mean field description of collective excitations of atomic nuclei is studied in the framework of a fully self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation (RRPA). In particular, results of RRPA calculations of multipole giant resonances and of low-lying collective states in spherical nuclei are analyzed. By using effective Lagrangians which, in the mean-field approximation, provide an accurate description of ground-state properties, an excellent agreement with experimental data is also found for the excitation energies of low-lying collective states and of giant resonances…
The production of collective excitations of the (154)Sm at FEL{gamma}+LHC collider is investigated. We show that this machine will be a powerful tool for investigation of high energy level excitations.
In this talk I discuss collective excitations that carry fermion quantum numbers. Such excitations occur in the quark-gluon plasma and can also be produced in cold atom systems under special conditions.
We develop a quantum kinetic theory of the chiral condensate and meson quasi-particle excitations using the O(N) linear sigma model which describe the chiral phase transition both in and out of equilibrium in a unified way. A mean field approximation is formulated in the presence of mesonic quasi-particle excitations which are described by generalized Wigner functions. It is shown that in equilibrium our kinetic equations reduce to the gap equations which determine the equilibrium condensate amplitude and the effective masses of the quasi-particle excitations, while linearization of transport …
We explore the spectrum of low-energy collective excitations in the crust of a neutron star, especially in the inner region where neutron-proton clusters are immersed in a sea of superfluid neutrons. The speeds of the different modes are calculated systematically from the nuclear energy density functional theory using a Skyrme functional fitted to essentially all experimental atomic mass data.
We discuss collective excitations (both fundamental and solitonic excitations) of quantized superfluid vortices in neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids, which likely exist in high density neutron matter such as neutron stars. Besides the well-known Kelvin modes (translational zero modes), we find a gapfull mode whose low-energy description takes the simple form of a double sine-Gordon model. The associated kink solution and its effects on spontaneous magnetization inside the vortex core are analyzed in detail.
We investigate the nuclear collective excitations of Wigner-Seitz cells containing nuclear clusters immersed in a gas of neutrons. This baryonic non-uniform system is specific to the structure of inner crust matter of neutron stars. The collective excitations are studied in the framework of a spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov + Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation, formulated in coordinate representation. The calculations are done for two representative Wigner-Seitz cells with baryonic density equal to 0.02 fm$^{-3}$ and 0.08 fm$^{-3}$. It is shown that the excitations with low multipolari…
The internal excitation of nuclei after multi-nucleon transfer is estimated by using the time-dependent mean-field theory. Transfer probabilities for each channel as well as the energy loss after re-separation are calculated. By combining these two informations, we show that the excitation energy distribution of the transfer fragments can be obtained separately for the different transfer channels. The method is applied to the reaction involving a $^{238}$U beam on a $^{12}$C target, which has recently been measured at GANIL. It is shown that the excitation energy calculated with the microscopi…
We calculate the correlation functions needed to describe the linear response of superfluid matter, and go on to calculate the differential cross section for neutral-current neutrino scattering in superfluid neutron matter and in color-flavor locked quark matter (CFL). We report the first calculation of scattering rates that includes neutrino interactions with both pair-breaking excitations and low-lying collective excitations (Goldstone modes). Our results apply both above and below the critical temperature, allowing use in simulations of neutrino transport in supernovae and neutron stars.
