We derive the scattering length of composite bosons (cobosons) within the framework of the composite boson many-body formalism that uses correlated-pair states as a basis, instead of free fermion states. The integral equation constructed from this physically relevant basis makes transparent the role of fermion exchange in the coboson-coboson effective scattering. Three potentials used for Cooper pairs, fermionic-atom dimers, and semiconductor excitons are considered. While the s-wave scattering length for the BCS-like potential is just equal to its Born value, the other two are substantially smaller. For fermionic-atom dimers and semiconductor excitons, our results, calculated within a restricted correlated-pair basis, are in good agreement with those obtained from procedures numerically more demanding. We also propose model coboson-coboson scatterings that are separable and thus easily workable, and that produce scattering lengths which match quantitatively well with the numerically-obtained values for all fermion mass ratios. These separable model scatterings can facilitate future works on many-body effects in coboson gases.
We consider spinor Bose gas with the isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling in 2D. We argue that at low density its groundstate is a composite fermion state with a Chern-Simons gauge field and filling factor one. The chemical potential of such a state scales with the density as μ\propto n^{3/2}. This is a lower energy per particle than μ\propto n for the earlier suggested groundstate candidates: a condensate with broken time-reversal symmetry and a spin density wave state.
We present a canonical mapping transforming physical boson operators into quadratic products of cluster composite bosons that preserves matrix elements of operators when a physical constraint is enforced. We map the 2D lattice Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian into $2\times 2$ composite bosons and solve it at mean field. The resulting Mott insulator-superfluid phase diagram reproduces well Quantum Monte Carlo results. The Higgs boson behavior along the particle-hole symmetry line is unraveled and in remarkable agreement with experiment. Results for the properties of the ground and excited states are co…
The partition function of composite bosons ("cobosons" for short) is calculated in the canonical ensemble, with the Pauli exclusion principle between their fermionic components included in an exact way through the finite temperature many-body formalism for composite quantum particles we recently developed. To physically understand the very compact result we obtain, we first present a diagrammatic approach to the partition function of $N$ elementary bosons. We then show how to extend this approach to cobosons with Pauli blocking and interaction between their fermions. These diagrams provide dee…
Ground state properties of a fermionic Coulomb gas are calculated using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. The validity of the composite boson description is tested for different densities. We extract the exciton-exciton $s$-wave scattering length by solving the four-body problem in a harmonic trap and mapping the energy to that of two trapped bosons. The equation of state is consistent with the Bogoliubov theory for composite bosons interacting with the obtained $s$-wave scattering length. The perturbative expansion at low density has contributions physically coming from (a) exciton…
We study the groundstates of cold atomic gases on rotating optical lattices, as described by the Bose-Hubbard model in a uniform effective magnetic field. Mapping the bosons to composite fermions leads to the prediction of quantum Hall fluids that have no counterpart in the continuum. We construct trial wavefunctions for these phases, and perform numerical tests of the predictions of the composite fermion model. Our results establish the existence of strongly correlated phases beyond those in the continuum limit, and provide evidence for a wider scope of the composite fermion approach beyond i…
Strong particle-plasmon interaction in electronic systems can lead to composite \emph{hole-plasmon} excitations. We investigate the emergence of similar composite quasiparticles in ultracold dipolar Fermi liquids originating from the long-range dipole-dipole interaction. We use the $G_0W$ technique with an effective interaction obtained from the static structure factor to calculate the quasiparticle properties and single-particle spectral function. We first demonstrate that within this formalism a very good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results could be achieved over a wide range of c…
Particles made of two fermions can in many cases be treated as elementary bosons, but the conditions for this treatment to be valid are nontrivial. The so-called "coboson formalism" is a powerful tool to tackle compositeness effects relevant for instance for exciton physics and ultracold atomic dimers. A key element of this theory is an ansatz for the ground state of N pairs, built from the single-pair ground state combined with the exclusion principle. We show that this ansatz can fail in one-dimensional systems which fulfill the conditions expected to make the ansatz valid. Nevertheless, we …
We study the zero-temperature grand potential of a three-dimensional superfluid made of ultracold fermionic alkali-metal atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover. In particular, we analyze the zero-point energy of both fermionic single-particle excitations and bosonic collective excitations. The bosonic elementary excitations, which are crucial to obtain a reliable equation of state in the BEC regime, are obtained with a low-momentum expansion up to the forth order of the quadratic (Gaussian) action of the fluctuating pairing field. By performing a cutoff regularization and renormalization of Gaussian f…
We predict the existence of high frequency modes in the interference pattern of two condensates made of fermionic-atom dimers. These modes, which result from fermion exchanges between condensates, constitute a striking signature of the dimer composite nature. From the 2-coboson spatial correlation function, that we derive analytically, and the Shiva diagrams that visualize many-body effects specific to composite bosons, we identify the physical origin of these high frequency modes and determine the conditions to see them experimentally by using bound fermionic-atom pairs trapped on optical lat…
We analyze a system of fermions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with attractive delta-interactions between different fermions species, as an approximate description of experiments involving atomic dimers. We solve the problem of two fermion pairs numerically using the so-called ''coboson formalism'' as an alternative to techniques which are based on the single-particle basis. This allows us to explore the strongly bound regime, approaching the limit of infinite attraction in which the composite particles behave as hard-core bosons. Our procedure is computationally inexpensive and illustrate…

We show that an ansatz based on independent composite bosons [Phys. Rep. 463, 215 (2008)] accurately describes the condensate fraction of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold Fermi gases. The entanglement between the fermionic constituents of a single Feshbach molecule then governs the many-particle statistics of the condensate, from the limit of strong interaction to close to unitarity. This result strengthens the role of entanglement as the indispensable driver of composite-boson behavior. The condensate fraction of fermion pairs at zero temperature that we compute matches excell…
Our goal is to understand the phenomena arising in optical lattice fermions at low temperature in an external magnetic field. Varying the field, the attraction between any two fermions can be made arbitrarily strong, where composite bosons form via so-called Feshbach resonances. By setting up strong-coupling equations for fermions, we find that in spatial dimension $d>2$ they couple to bosons which dress up fermions and lead to new massive composite fermions. At low enough temperature, we obtain the critical temperature at which composite bosons undergo the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), lead…
We consider composite bosons (cobosons) comprised of two elementary particles, fermions or bosons, in an entangled state. First, we show that the effective number of cobosons implies the level of correlation between the two constituent particles. For the maximum level of correlation, the effective number of cobosons is the same as the total number of cobosons, which can exhibit the original Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). In this context, we study a model of BEC for indistinguishable cobosons with a controllable parameter, i.e., entanglement between the two constituent particles. We find tha…
We study a many-body mixture of an equal number of bosons and two-component fermions with a strong contact attraction. In this system bosons and fermions can be paired into composite fermions. We construct a large N extension where both bosons and fermions have the extra large N degrees of freedom and the boson-fermion interaction is extended to a four-point contact interaction which is invariant under the O(N) group transformation, so that the composite fermions become singlet in terms of the O(N) group. It is shown that such O(N) singlet fields have controllable quantum fluctuations suppress…
We study Gaussian fluctuations of the zero-temperature attractive Fermi gas in the 2D BCS-BEC crossover showing that they are crucial to get a reliable equation of state in the BEC regime of composite bosons, bound states of fermionic pairs. A low-momentum expansion up to the fourth order of the quadratic action of the fluctuating pairing field gives an ultraviolent divergent contribution of the Gaussian fluctuations to the grand potential. Performing dimensional regularization we evaluate the effective coupling constant in the beyond-mean-field grand potential. Remarkably, in the BEC regime o…
We briefly discuss recent experiments on the BCS-BEC crossover with ultracold alkali-metal atoms both in three-dimensional configurations and two-dimensional ones. Then we analyze the quantum-field-theory formalism used to describe an attractive $D$-dimensional Fermi gas taking into account Gaussian fluctuations. Finally, we apply this formalism to obtain a reliable equation of state of the 2D system at low temperaratures in the BEC regime of the crossover by performing a meaningful dimensional regularization of the divergent zero-point energy of collective bosonic excitations.
