Annihilation of Dark Matter (DM) particles has been recognized as one of the possible mechanisms for the production of non-thermal particles and radiation in galaxy clusters. Previous studies have shown that, while DM models can reproduce the spectral properties of the radio halo in the Coma cluster, they fail in reproducing the shape of the radio halo surface brightness because they produce a shape that is too concentrated towards the center of the cluster with respect to the observed one. However, in previous studies the DM distribution was modeled as a single spherically symmetric halo, while the DM distribution in Coma is found to have a complex and elongated shape. In this work we calculate a range of non-thermal emissions in the Coma cluster by using the observed distribution of DM sub-halos. We find that, by including the observed sub-halos in the DM model, we obtain a radio surface brightness with a shape similar to the observed one, and that the sub-halos boost the radio emission by a factor between 5 and 20%, thus allowing to reduce the gap between the annihilation cross section required to reproduce the radio halo flux and the upper limits derived from other observations, and that this gap can be explained by realistic values of the boosting factor due to smaller substructures. Models with neutralino mass of 9 GeV and composition $τ^+ τ^-$, and mass of 43 GeV and composition $b \bar b$ can fit the radio halo spectrum using the observed properties of the magnetic field in Coma, and do not predict a gamma-ray emission in excess compared to the recent Fermi-LAT upper limits. These findings make these DM models viable candidate to explain the origin of radio halos in galaxy clusters. [abridged]
We determine the error introduced in a joint halo model analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering observables when adopting the standard approximation of linear halo bias. Considering the Kilo-Degree Survey, we forecast that ignoring the non-linear halo bias would result in up to 5$σ$ offsets in the recovered cosmological parameters describing structure growth, $S_8$, and the matter density parameter, $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$. We include the scales $10^{-1.3}<r_{\rm{p}} \ / h^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}<10$ in the data vector, and the direction of these offsets are shown to depend on the freedom…
Galaxy-galaxy weak-lensing measurement from SDSS: II. host halo properties of galaxy groups
To extract information from the clustering of galaxies on non-linear scales, we need to model the connection between galaxies and halos accurately and in a flexible manner. Standard halo occupation distribution (HOD) models make the assumption that the galaxy occupation in a halo is a function of only its mass, however, in reality, the occupation can depend on various other parameters including halo concentration, assembly history, environment, spin, etc. Using the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamic simulation as our target, we show that machine learning tools can be used to capture this high-dimension…
Secondary halo properties beyond mass, such as the mass accretion rate (MAR), concentration, and the half mass scale, are essential in understanding the formation of large-scale structure and dark matter halos. In this paper, we study the impact of secondary halo properties on the galaxy-galaxy lensing observable, $ΔΣ$. We build an emulator trained on N-body simulations to model $ΔΣ$ and quantify the impact of different secondary parameters on the $ΔΣ$ profile. We focus on the impact of MAR on $ΔΣ$. We show that a 3$σ$ detection of variations in MAR at fixed halo mass could be achieved with th…
Using a mapping from dark matter halos to galaxy properties based on hydrodynamical simulations, we explore the impact of galaxy properties on the void size function and the void-galaxy correlation function. We replicate the properties of galaxies from Illustris on MassiveNus halos, to perform both luminosity and star formation rate cuts on MassiveNus halos. We compare the impact of such cuts on voids properties with respect to cuts on halo mass (as usually performed on halo catalogs driven from N-body simulations). We find that void catalogs built from luminosity-selected galaxies and halos a…
Here we present Halo-FDCA, a robust open source Python package for modeling and estimating total flux densities of radio (mini) halos in galaxy clusters. Radio halos are extended ( ~200 - 1500 kpc in size) synchrotron emitting sources found in galaxy clusters that trace the presence of cosmic rays and magnetic fields in the intracluster medium (ICM). These sources are centrally located and have a low surface brightness. Their exact origin is still unknown but they are likely related to cosmic rays being re-accelerated in-situ by merger or sloshing driven ICM turbulence. The presented algorithm…
Reconstruction of halo power spectrum from redshift-space galaxy distribution: cylinder-grouping method and halo exclusion effect
We employ the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG to inform the galaxy-halo connection of the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) and Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) samples of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey at redshift z ~ 0.8. Specifically, we model the galaxy colors of IllustrisTNG and apply sliding DESI color-magnitude cuts, matching the DESI target densities. We study the halo occupation distribution model (HOD) of the selected samples by matching them to their corresponding dark matter halos in the IllustrisTNG dark matter run. We find the HOD of both the LRG and ELG samples …
We rederive the number density of intervening line-of-sight haloes relative to lens subhaloes in galaxy-galaxy strong lensing observations, where these perturbers can generate detectable image fluctuations. Previous studies have calculated the detection limit of a line-of-sight small-mass dark halo by comparing the lensing deflection angles it would cause, to those caused by a subhalo within the lens. However, this overly simplifies the difference in observational consequences between a subhalo and a line-of-sight halo. Furthermore, it does not take into account degeneracies between an extra s…
Halo models and halo occupation distributions (HODs) are important tools to model the galaxy and matter distribution. We present and assess a new method for constraining the parameters of HODs using the gravitational lensing shear around galaxy pairs, galaxy-galaxy-galaxy-lensing (G3L). In contrast to galaxy-galaxy-lensing, G3L is sensitive to correlations between the per-halo numbers of galaxies from different populations. We use G3L to probe these correlations and test the default hypothesis that they are negligible. We derive a halo model for G3L and validate it with realistic mock data fro…
Understanding the impact of halo properties beyond halo mass on the clustering of galaxies (namely galaxy assembly bias) remains a challenge for contemporary models of galaxy clustering. We explore the use of machine learning to predict the halo occupations and recover galaxy clustering and assembly bias in a semi-analytic galaxy formation model. For stellar-mass selected samples, we train a Random Forest algorithm on the number of central and satellite galaxies in each dark matter halo. With the predicted occupations, we create mock galaxy catalogues and measure the clustering and assembly bi…

We apply machine learning, a powerful method for uncovering complex correlations in high-dimensional data, to the galaxy-halo connection of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The mapping between galaxy and halo variables is stochastic in the absence of perfect information, but conventional machine learning models are deterministic and hence cannot capture its intrinsic scatter. To overcome this limitation, we design an ensemble of neural networks with a Gaussian loss function that predict probability distributions, allowing us to model statistical uncertainties in the galaxy-halo connect…
A defining prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model is the existence of a very large population of low-mass haloes. This population is absent in models in which the dark matter particle is warm (WDM). These alternatives can, in principle, be distinguished observationally because halos along the line-of-sight can perturb galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lenses. Furthermore, the WDM particle mass could be deduced because the cut-off in their halo mass function depends on the mass of the particle. We systematically explore the detectability of low-mass haloes in WDM models by…
Halo assembly bias is the secondary dependence of the clustering of dark-matter haloes on their assembly histories at fixed halo mass. This established dependence is expected to manifest itself on the clustering of the galaxy population, a potential effect commonly known as galaxy assembly bias. Using the IllustrisTNG300 magnetohydrodynamical simulation, we analyse the dependence of the properties and clustering of galaxies on the shape of the specific mass accretion history of their hosting haloes (sMAH). We first show that several halo and galaxy properties strongly correlate with the slope …
One of the main predictions of excursion set theory is that the clustering of dark matter haloes only depends on halo mass. However, it has been long established that the clustering of haloes also depends on other properties, including formation time, concentration, and spin; this effect is commonly known as halo assembly bias. We use a suite of gravity-only simulations to study the dependence of halo assembly bias on cosmology; these simulations cover cosmological parameters spanning 10$σ$ around state-of-the-art best-fitting values, including standard extensions of the $Λ$CDM paradigm such a…
Based on galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and dark matter haloes in the dark matter only, cosmological and constrained ELUCID simulation, we investigate the relation between the observed radii of central galaxies with stellar mass $\gtrsim 10^{8} h^{-2}{\rm M}_\odot$ and the virial radii of their host dark matter haloes with virial mass $\gtrsim 10^{10.5} h^{-1}{\rm M}_\odot$, and the dependence of galaxy-halo size relation on the halo spin and concentration. Galaxies in observation are matched to dark matter (sub-)haloes in the ELUCID simulation using a novel…
