We examine the total mixed scalar curvature of a fixed distribution as a functional of a pseudo-Riemannian metric. We develop variational formulas for quantities of extrinsic geometry of the distribution to find the critical points of this action. Together with the arbitrary variations of the metric, we consider also variations that preserve the volume of the manifold or partially preserve the metric (e.g. on the distribution). For each of those cases we obtain the Euler-Lagrange equation and its several solutions. The examples of critical metrics that we find are related to various fields of geometry such as contact and 3-Sasakian manifolds, geodesic Riemannian flows and codimension-one foliations of interesting geometric properties (e.g. totally umbilical, minimal).
In this paper, we introduce the weighted mixed (sectional, Ricci and scalar) curvature of a foliated (and almost-product) Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ equipped with a vector field $X$. We define several functions ($q$th Ricci type curvatures), which "interpolate" between the weighed sectional and Ricci curvatures. The novel concepts of the "mixed curvature-dimension" condition and "synthetic dimension of a distribution" allow us to update the estimate of the diameter of a compact Riemannian foliation and to prove new splitting theorems for almost-product manifolds of nonnegative/nonpositive wei…
In this paper we deal with two classes of mixed metric 3-structures, namely the mixed 3-Sasakian structures and the mixed metric 3-contact structures. Firstly we study some properties of the curvature of mixed 3-Sasakian structures, proving that any manifold endowed with such a structure is Einstein. Then we prove the identity between the class of mixed 3-Sasakian structures and the class of mixed metric 3-contact structures.
A mixed type surface is a connected regular surface in a Lorentzian 3-manifold with non-empty spacelike and timelike point sets. The induced metric of a mixed type surface is a signature-changing metric, and their lightlike points may be regarded as singular points of such metrics. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of Gaussian curvature at a non-degenerate lightlike point of a mixed type surface. To characterize the boundedness of Gaussian curvature at a non-degenerate lightlike points, we introduce several fundamental invariants along non-degenerate lightlike points, such as the ligh…
We construct embedded triply periodic zero mean curvature surfaces of mixed type in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space with the same topology as the Schwarz D surface in the Euclidean 3-space.
In this work we consider compact Kähler manifolds with non-positive mixed curvature which is a "convex combination" of Ricci curvature and holomorphic sectional curvature. We show that in this case, the canonical line bundle is nef. Moreover, if the curvature is negative at some point, then the manifold is projective with canonical line bundle being big and nef. If in addition the curvature is negative, then the canonical line bundle is ample. As an application, we answer a question of Ni concerning manifolds with negative $k$-Ricci curvature and generalize a result of Wu-Yau and Diverio-Trapa…
A pseudo-Riemannian manifold endowed with $k>2$ orthogonal complementary distributions (called a Riemannian almost multi-product structure) appears in such topics as multiply warped products, the webs composed of several foliations, Dupin hypersurfaces and in stu\-dies of the curvature and Einstein equations. In this article, we consider the following two problems on the mixed scalar curvature of a Riemannian almost multi-product manifold with a linear connection: a) integral formulas and applications to splitting of manifolds, b) variation formulas and applications to the mixed Einstein-Hilbe…
It is classically known that the only zero mean curvature entire graphs in the Euclidean 3-space are planes, by Bernstein's theorem. A surface in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space $\boldsymbol{R}^3_1$ is called of mixed type if it changes causal type from space-like to time-like. In $\boldsymbol{R}^3_1$, Osamu Kobayashi found two zero mean curvature entire graphs of mixed type that are not planes. As far as the authors know, these two examples were the only known examples of entire zero mean curvature graphs of mixed type without singularities. In this paper, we construct several families of real anal…
The mixed scalar curvature is one of the simplest curvature invariants of a foliated Riemannian manifold. We explore the problem of prescribing the mixed scalar curvature of a foliated Riemann-Cartan manifold by conformal change of the structure in tangent and normal to the leaves directions. Under certain geometrical assumptions and in two special cases: along a compact leaf and for a closed fibred manifold, we reduce the problem to solution of a leafwise elliptic equation, which has three stable solutions -- only one of them corresponds to the case of a foliated Riemannian manifold.
In this paper, we shall prove that space-like surfaces with bounded mean curvature functions in real analytic Lorentzian 3-manifolds can change their causality to time-like surfaces only if the mean curvature functions tend to zero. Moreover, we shall show the existence of such surfaces with non-vanishing mean curvature and investigate their properties.
We establish new obstruction results to the existence of Riemannian metrics on tori satisfying mixed bounds on both their sectional and Ricci curvatures. More precisely, from Lohkamp's theorem, every torus of dimension at least three admits Riemannian metrics with negative Ricci curvature. We show that the sectional curvature of these metrics cannot be bounded from above by an arbitrarily small positive constant. In particular, if the Ricci curvature of a Riemannian torus is negative, bounded away from zero, then there exist some planar directions in this torus where the sectional curvature is…
We relate the (non)existence of lower scalar curvature bounds to the existence of certain distance-decreasing maps. We also give a sufficient condition for the existence of a limiting scalar curvature measure in the backward limit of a Ricci flow solution.
We show any Riemannian curvature model can be geometrically realized by a manifold with constant scalar curvature. We also show that any pseudo-Hermitian curvature model, para-Hermitian curvature model, hyper-pseudo-Hermitian curvature model, or hyper-para-Hermitian curvature model can be realized by a manifold with constant scalar and *-scalar curvature.
This paper concerns the evolution of a closed hypersurface of dimension $n(\geq 2)$ in the Euclidean space ${\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}$ under a mixed volume preserving flow. The speed equals a power $β(\geq 1)$ of homogeneous, either convex or concave, curvature functions of degree one plus a mixed volume preserving term, including the case of powers of the mean curvature and of the Gauss curvature. The main result is that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a suitable pinching condition, there exists a unique, smooth solution of the flow for all times, and the evolving hypersurfaces converge expone…
In this paper, we show that steady or shrinking complete gradient Yamabe solitons with finite total scalar curvature and non-positive Ricci curvature are Ricci flat. Moreover, under certain pinching condition for Ricci curvature, we show that steady or shrinking complete gradient Yamabe solitons with finite total scalar curvature and non-positive scalar curvature have zero scalar curvature.
In this short paper, we establish a closer relation between the Berwald scalar curvature and the $S$-curvature. In fact, we prove that a Finsler metric has isotropic Berwald scalar curvature if and only if it has weakly isotropic $S$-curvature. For Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature and of weakly isotropic $S$-curvature, they have almost isotropic $S$-curvature if and only if the flag curvature is weakly isotropic.
We study the properties of the $n$-volumic scalar curvature in this note. Lott-Sturm-Villani's curvature-dimension condition ${\rm CD}(κ,n)$ was showed to imply Gromov's $n$-volumic scalar curvature $\geq nκ$ under an additional $n$-dimensional condition and we show the stability of $n$-volumic scalar curvature $\geq κ$ with respect to smGH-convergence. Then we propose a new weighted scalar curvature on the weighted Riemannian manifold and show its properties.
The aim of the present paper is to provide an \emph{intrinsic} investigation of special Finsler spaces of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature and of $H_{p}\,$-constant curvature. Characterizations of such spaces are shown. Sufficient condition for Finsler space of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature to be of perpendicular scalar curvature is investigated. Necessary and sufficient condition under which a Finsler space of scalar curvature turns into a Finsler space of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature is given. Further, certain conditions under which a Finsler manifolds of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature and of scalar curvature redu…
We formulate several conjectures on mean convex domains in the Euclidean spaces, as well as in more general spaces with lower bonds on their scalar curvatures, and prove a few theorems motivating these conjectures.
In this note, we prove that for a complete noncompact three dimensional Riemannian manifold with bounded sectional curvature, if it has uniformly positive scalar curvature, then there is a uniform lower bound on the injectivity radius.
In this paper, we study the Randers metrics of weakly isotropic scalar curvature. We prove that a Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature must be of isotropic $S$-curvature. Further, we prove that a conformally flat Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature is either Minkowskian or Riemannian.
We consider modified scalar curvature functions for Riemannian manifolds equipped with smooth measures. Given a Riemannian submersion whose fiber transport is measure-preserving up to constants, we show that the modified scalar curvature of the base is bounded below in terms of the scalar curvatures of the total space and fibers. We give an application concerning the scalar curvature of a smooth limit space arising in a bounded curvature collapse.
Extending Aubin's construction of metrics with constant negative scalar curvature, we prove that every $n$-dimensional closed manifold admits a Riemannian metric with constant negative scalar-Weyl curvature, that is $R+t|W|, t\in\mathbb{R}$. In particular, there are no topological obstructions for metrics with $\varepsilon$-pinched Weyl curvature and negative scalar curvature.
We approximate boundaries of convex polytopes by smooth hypersurfaces $Y=Y_\varepsilon$ with {\it positive mean curvatures} and, by using basic geometric relations between the scalar curvatures of Riemannin manifolds and the mean curvatures of their boundaries, establish {\it lower bound on the dihedral angles} of these polytopes.
The infimum of the Weyl functional is shown to be surprisingly small on many compact 4-manifolds that admit positive-scalar-curvature metrics. Results are also proved that systematically compare the scalar and self-dual Weyl curvatures of certain almost-Kaehler 4-manifolds.
In this short paper, we prove that a Finsler manifold with vanishing Berwald scalar curvature has zero $\mathbf{E}$-curvature. As a consequence, Landsberg manifolds with vanishing Berwald scalar curvature are Berwald manifolds. This improves a previous result in \cite{Li}. For $(α,β)$-metrics on manifold of dimension greater than 2, if the mean Landsberg curvature and the Berwald scalar curvature both vanish, the Berwald curvature also vanishes.
We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential fun…
In this work, we study the Yamabe flow corresponding to the prescribed scalar curvature problem on compact Riemannian manifolds with negative scalar curvature. The long time existence and convergence of the flow are proved under appropriate conditions on the prescribed scalar curvature function.
We show that two smooth nearby Riemannian metrics can be glued interpolating their scalar curvature. The resulting smooth metric is the same as the starting ones outside the gluing region and has scalar curvature interpolating between the original ones. One can then glue metrics while maintaining inequalities satisfied by the scalar curvature. We also glue asymptotically Euclidean metrics to Schwarzschild ones and the same for asymptotically Delaunay metrics, keeping bounds on the scalar curvature, if any. This extend the Corvino gluing near infinity to non-constant scalar curvature metrics.
We use the theory of isoparametric functions to investigate gradient Ricci solitons with constant scalar curvature. We show rigidity of gradient Ricci solitons with constant scalar curvature under some conditions on the Ricci tensor, which are all satisfied if the manifold is curvature homogeneous. This leads to a complete description of four- and six-dimensional Kaehler gradient Ricci solitons with constant scalar curvature.
We overview main topics and ideas in spaces with their scalar curvatures bounded from below, and present a more detailed exposition of several known and some new geometric constraints on Riemannian spaces implied by the lower bounds on their scalar curvatures
On a compact n-dimensional manifold, it has been conjectured that a critical point metric of the total scalar curvature, restricted to the space of metrics with constant scalar curvature of unit volume, will be Einstein. This conjecture was proposed in 1984 by Besse, but has yet to be proved. In this paper, we prove that if the manifold with the critical point metric has harmonic curvature, then it is isometric to a standard sphere.
On a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$, we study the problem of prescribing the scalar curvature in $M$ and the mean curvature on the boundary $\partial M$ simultaneously. To do this, we introduce the notion of singular metric, which is inspired by the early work of Fischer-Marsden in [18] and Lin-Yuan in [23] for closed manifold. We show that we can prescribe the scalar curvature and the mean curvature simultaneously for generic scalar-flat manifolds with minimal boundary. We also prove some rigidity results for the flat manifolds with totally geodesic boundary.
We prove a formula involving the scalar curvature of a Riemannian manifold endowed with a distribution in terms of an adapted orthonormal frame for its tangent bundle. Using the formula, we then investigate the effect of collapsing the metric along the distribution on the scalar curvature. This result contributes to the question of finding a positive scalar curvature metric on a Riemannian manifold.
One of the most important problems in Finsler geometry is to classify Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature. In this paper, we study the classification problem of Randers metrics of scalar flag curvature. Under the condition that $β$ is a Killing 1-form, we obtain some important necessary conditions for Randers metrics to be of scalar flag curvature.
In this paper we study invariant almost Hermitian geometry on generalized flag manifolds. We will focus on providing examples of Kähler like scalar curvature metric, that is, almost Hermitian structures $(g,J)$ satisfying $s=2s_{\rm C}$, where $s$ is Riemannian scalar curvature and $s_{\rm C}$ is the Chern scalar curvature.
We obtain some nonexistence results for complete noncompact stable hyppersurfaces with nonnegative constant scalar curvature in Euclidean spaces. As a special case we prove that there is no complete noncompact strongly stable hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ with zero scalar curvature $S_2$, nonzero Gauss-Kronecker curvature and finite total curvature (i.e. $\int_M|A|^3<+\infty$).
In this paper, we study the interplay of geometry and positive scalar curvature on a complete, non-compact manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. In three-dimensional manifold, we prove a minimal volume growth, an estimate of integral of scalar curvature and width. In higher dimensional manifold, we obtain a volume growth with a stronger condition.
We explain how to derive largeness constraints in scalar curvature geometry using some basic splitting results and the potential theory on singular area minimizing hypersurfaces. This includes a variety of results like the non-existence of positive scalar curvature metrics on enlargeable manifolds or simplified proofs for positive mass theorems.
Lutwak, Yang and Zhang [23] introduced the concept of Lp dual curvature measure for convex bodies and star bodies, and studied the Minkowski problem. We in this paper establish a new unified concept, in briefly, the (p,q)-mixed quermassintegrals, via (p,q)-dual mixed curvature measure, and further have a deep discussion on Minkowski problem with respect to the (p,q)-dual mixed curvature measure. By the way, we derive at some important properties and geometric inequalities for (p,q)-mixed quermassintegrals.
In this paper we extend the local scalar curvature rigidity result in [6] to a small domain on general vacuum static spaces, which confirms the interesting dichotomy of local surjectivity and local rigidity about the scalar curvature in general in the light of the paper [10]. We obtain the local scalar curvature rigidity of bounded domains in hyperbolic spaces. We also obtain the global scalar curvature rigidity for conformal deformations of metrics in the domains, where the lapse functions are positive, on vacuum static spaces with positive scalar curvature, and show such domains are maximal,…
Scalar curvature constraints can be studied by means of splitting procedures. The success of this strategy depends on the control we can get on its splitting factors. We introduce canonical so-called minimal splitting factors. They have positive scalar curvature while other properties strongly resemble those of area minimizing hypersurfaces. This includes the presence of Poincare, Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities and the fact that singular points admit tangent cones but now with positive scalar curvature.
