In this lecture, we give a first introduction to neutron stars, based on fundamental physical principles. After outlining their outstanding macroscopic properties, as obtained from observations, we infer the extreme conditions of matter in their interiors. We then describe two crucial physical phenomena which characterize compact stars, namely the gravitational stability of strongly degenerate matter and the neutronization of nuclear matter with increasing density, and explain how the formation and properties of neutron stars are a direct consequence of the extreme compression of matter under strong gravity. Finally, we describe how multi-wavelength observations of different external macroscopic features (e.g. maximum mass, surface temperature, pulsar glitches) can give invaluable information about the exotic internal microscopic scenario: super-dense, isospin-asymmetric, superfluid, bulk hadronic matter (probably deconfined in the most central regions) which can be found nowhere else in the Universe. Indeed, neutrons stars represent a unique probe to study the properties of the low-temperature, high-density sector of the QCD phase diagram. Moreover, binary systems of compact stars allow to make extremely precise measurements of the properties of curved space-time in the strong field regime, as well as being efficient sources of gravitational waves.
The advent of moderately high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Chandra and XMM promised to usher in a new age in the study of neutron stars: we thought we would study neutron stars like stars, with resolved absorption spectra revealing their surface chemical composition and physical conditions (e.g. surface gravity, pressure, temperature). Nature, however, did not cooperate in this endeavor, as observations of neutron stars have not revealed verified atomic absorption lines yet. In the near future, advancements in transition-edge sensors (TES) technology will allow for electron-volt-resoluti…
Finite size effects come into play during the late stages of neutron star binary inspiral, with the tidal deformability of the supranuclear density matter leaving an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal. As demonstrated in the case of GW170817, this leads to a constraint on the neutron star radius (and hence the equation of state). A deeper understanding of the tidal response requires an analysis of both the state and composition of matter. While these aspects may not have dramatic impact, they could lead to systematic effects that need to be kept in mind as the observational data become m…
Determining the phase structure of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and its Equation of State (EOS) at densities and temperatures realized inside neutron stars and their mergers is a long-standing open problem. The holographic V-QCD framework provides a model for the EOS of dense and hot QCD, which describes the deconfinement phase transition between a dense baryonic and a quark matter phase. We use this model in fully general relativistic hydrodynamic (GRHD) simulations to study the formation of quark matter and the emitted gravitational wave signal of binary systems that are similar to the first…

Using neutron stars (NS) as a dark matter (DM) probe has gained broad attention recently, either from heating due to DM annihilation or its stability under the presence of DM. In this work, we investigate spin-$1/2$ fermionic DM $χ$ charged under the $U(1)_{X}$ in the dark sector. The massive gauge boson $V$ of $U(1)_{X}$ gauge group can be produced in NS via DM annihilation. The produced gauge boson can decay into Standard Model (SM) particles before it exits the NS, despite its tiny couplings to SM particles. Thus, we perform a systematic study on $χ\barχ\to2V\to4{\rm SM}$ as a new heating m…
Core collapse of massive stars leads to different fates for various physical factors, which gives different spectra of the emitted neutrinos. We focus on the supernova relic neutrinos (SRNs) as a probe to investigate the stellar collapse fate. We present the SRN fluxes and event rate spectra at a detector for three resultant states after stellar core collapse, the typical mass neutron star, the higher mass neutron star, or the failed supernova forming a black hole, based on different nuclear equations of state. Then possible SRN fluxes are formed as mixtures of the three components. We also sh…

Compact binaries such as double neutron stars or a neutron star paired with a black-hole, are strong sources of gravitational waves during coalescence and also the likely progenitors of various electromagnetic phenomena, notably short-duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), and kilonovae. In this work, we generate populations of synthetic binaries and place them in galaxies from the large-scale hydrodynamical galaxy evolution simulation EAGLE. With our zELDA code, binaries are seeded in proportion to star formation rate, and we follow their evolution to merger using both the BPASS and COSMIC binary…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) presents an exciting new capability for exploring the modulation properties of X-ray emitting neutron stars, including large area, low background, extremely precise absolute event time stamps, superb low-energy response and flexible scheduling. The Pulsation Searches and Multiwavelength Coordination working group has designed a 2.5 Ms observing program to search for emission and characterize the modulation properties of about 30 known or suspected neutron star sources across a number of source categories. A key early goal will be to search…

On August 14, 2019, the LIGO and Virgo detectors observed GW190814, a gravitational-wave signal originating from the merger of a $\simeq 23 M_\odot$ black hole with a $\simeq 2.6 M_\odot$ compact object. GW190814's compact-binary source is atypical both in its highly asymmetric masses and in its lower-mass component lying between the heaviest known neutron star and lightest known black hole in a compact-object binary. If formed through isolated binary evolution, the mass of the secondary is indicative of its mass at birth. We examine the formation of such systems through isolated binary evolut…

Synergetic observations of multi-band coincidence signals from merging neutron stars have definitively marked the significance of multi-messenger astronomy. We present a new generic signature of neutron star mergers, positron emission and the associated 511 keV radiation, produced from ejected neutron-rich radioactive merger material. Accounting for historical neutron star mergers within the Milky Way allows to readily explain the origin of the long-observed 511 keV emission line from the Galactic Center. Further, we draw a direct link between heavy element production ($r$-process nucleosynthe…

We review the composition and the equation of state of the hyperonic core of neutron stars at finite temperature within a relativistic mean-field approach. We make use of the new FSU2H* model, which is built upon the FSU2H scheme by improving on the Xi potential according to the recent analysis on the Xi atoms, and we extend it to include finite temperature corrections. The calculations are done for a wide range of densities, temperatures and charge fractions, thus exploring the different conditions that can be found in protoneutron stars, binary mergers remnants and supernovae explosions. The…

The exterior gravitational field of a slowly-rotating neutron star can be characterized by its multipole moments, the first few being the neutron star mass, moment of inertia, and quadrupole moment to quadratic order in spin. In principle, all of these quantities depend on the neutron star's internal structure, and thus, on unknown nuclear physics at supra-nuclear energy densities. We here find relations between the moment of inertia, the Love numbers and the quadrupole moment (I-Love-Q relations) that do not depend sensitively on the neutron star's internal structure. Three important conseque…
Gravitational waves from neutron star binary inspirals contain information on strongly-interacting matter in unexplored, extreme regimes. Extracting this requires robust theoretical models of the signatures of matter in the gravitational-wave signals due to spin and tidal effects. In fact, spins can have a significant impact on the tidal excitation of the quasi-normal modes of a neutron star, which is not included in current state-of-the-art waveform models. We develop a simple approximate description that accounts for the Coriolis effect of spin on the tidal excitation of the neutron star's q…

Observations of gravitational waves from neutron star mergers open up novel directions for exploring fundamental physics: they offer the first access to the structure of objects with a non-negligible contribution from vacuum energy to their total mass. The presence of such vacuum energy in the inner cores of neutron stars occurs in new QCD phases at large densities, with the vacuum energy appearing in the equation of state for a new phase. This in turn leads to a change in the internal structure of neutron stars and influences their tidal deformabilities which are measurable in the chirp signa…
