We report on the creation of angle-independent colors on silver using closely time-spaced laser bursts. The use of burst mode, compared to traditional non-burst is shown to increase the Chroma (color saturation) by ~50% and to broaden the lightness range by up to ~60%. Scanning electron microscope analysis of the surfaces created using burst mode, reveal the creation of 3 distinct sets of laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS): low spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL), high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL) and large laser-induced periodic surface structures (LLIPSS) that are 10 times the laser wavelength and parallel to the laser polarization. Nanoparticles are responsible for each plasmonic color and their distributions are observed to be similar for both burst and non-burst modes, indicating that the underlying structures (i.e. LIPSSs) are responsible for the increased Chroma and Lightness. Two-temperature model simulations of silver irradiated by laser bursts show significant increase in the electron-phonon coupling coefficient which is crucial for the creation of well-defined ripple structures. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations of the colored surfaces show the increase in Chroma to be attributable to the HSFL arising in burst mode.
Hotspots of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) are localized within 1 nm at gaps or crevices of plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) dimers. We demonstrate SERRS hotspots with volumes that are extended in one dimension tens of thousand times compared to standard zero-dimensional hotspots using gaps or crevices of plasmonic nanowire (NW) dimers.
Multiple surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves excited at the interface of a homogeneous isotropic metal and a chiral sculptured thin film (STF) impregnated with silver nanoparticles were theoretically assessed for the multiple-SPP-waves-based sensing of a fluid uniformly infiltrating the chiral STF. The Bruggemann homogenization formalism was used in two different modalities to determine the three principal relative permittivity scalars of the silver-nanoparticle-impregnated chiral STF infiltrated uniformly by the fluid. The dynamic sensitivity increased when silver nanoparticles were present…
Metal nanoparticles are the most frequently used nanostructures in plasmonics. However, besides nanoparticles, metal nanowires feature several advantages for applications. Their elongation offers a larger interaction volume, their resonances can reach higher quality factors, and their mode structure provides better coupling into integrated hybrid dielectric-plasmonic circuits. It is crucial though, to control the distance of the wire to a supporting substrate, to another metal layer or to active materials with sub-nanometer precision. A dielectric coating can be utilized for distance control, …
Plasmonic nanoparticles from unconventional materials can improve or even bring some novel functionalities into the disciplines inherently related to plasmonics such as photochemistry or (spectro)electrochemistry. They can, for example, catalyze various chemical reactions or act as nanoelectrodes and optical transducers in various applications. Silver amalgam is the perfect example of such an unconventional plasmonic material, albeit it is well-known in the field of electrochemistry for its wide cathodic potential window and strong adsorption affinity of biomolecules to its surface. In this st…
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…

Plasmonic waveguides are key elements in nanophotonic devices serving as optical interconnects between nanoscale light sources and detectors. Multimode operation in plasmonic two-wire transmission lines promises important degrees of freedom for near-field manipulation and information encoding. However, highly confined plasmon propagation in gold nanostructures is typically limited to the near-infrared region due to ohmic losses, excluding all visible quantum emitters from plasmonic circuitry. Here, we report on top-down fabrication of complex plasmonic nanostructures in single-crystalline silv…
Over the last decade, plasmonic antireflecting nanostructures have been extensively studied to be utilized in various optical and optoelectronic systems such as lenses, solar cells, photodetectors, and others. The growing interest to all-dielectric photonics as an alternative optical technology along with plasmonics motivates us to compare antireflection properties of all-dielectric and plasmonic nanoparticle coatings based on silver and crystalline silicon. Our results of numerical simulations for periodic arrays of spherical nanoparticles on top of amorphous silicon show that both silicon an…
Metal-dielectric interfaces of various geometries are fundamental photonic material platforms for surface plasmons. Surface plasmon polaritons and localized surface plasmons are two surface plasmon modes that are excited on planar and curved metal-dielectric interfaces, respectively. Herein, we demonstrate in-situ formation of silver nanoparticles by diffusion at a planar interface between sputter-deposited silver and nitride dielectrics. In one step, we synthesize a nanostructure that exhibits both localized surface plasmon resonances at silver nanoparticles and surface plasmon resonances at …
We investigate the propagation of surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) light by several micrometers through a one-dimensional hotspot (1D HS) located between a plasmonic nanowire dimer (NWD). The propagation exhibits the properties, e.g. an effective propagation induced by excitation and detection polarization orthogonal to the 1D HS long axis, the propagation profiles composed of bright short and dark long propagations, SERRS spectral shapes independent of localized plasmon (LP) resonance of NWDs, redshifts in the SERRS spectra at the edges of 1D HSs, and considerable NWD-by-NWD…
We demonstrate an unexpectedly strong surface-plasmonic absorption at the interface of silver and high-index dielectrics based on electron and photon spectroscopy. The measured bandwidth and intensity of absorption deviate significantly from the classical theory. Our density-functional calculation well predicts the occurrence of this phenomenon. It reveals that due to the low metal-to-dielectric work function at such interfaces, conduction electrons can display a drastic quantum spillover, causing the interfacial electron-hole pair production to dominate the decay of surface plasmons. This fin…
A novel numerical methodology has been developed, which makes possible to optimize arbitrary emitting dipole and plasmonic nano-resonator configuration with an arbitrary objective function. By selecting quantum efficiency as the objective function that has to be maximized at preselected Purcell factor criteria, optimization of plasmonic nanorod based configurations has been realized to enhance fluorescence of NV and SiV color centers in diamond. Gold and silver nanorod based configurations have been optimized to enhance excitation and emission separately, as well as both processes simultaneous…
Optical field localization at plasmonic tip-sample nanojunctions has enabled high spatial resolution chemical analysis through tip-enhanced linear optical spectroscopies, including Raman scattering and photoluminescence. Here, we illustrate that nonlinear optical processes, including parametric four-wave mixing (4WM), second harmonic/sum-frequency generation (SHG and SFG), and two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL), can be enhanced at plasmonic junctions and spatio-spectrally resolved simultaneously with few-nm spatial resolution under ambient conditions. More importantly, through a detailed anal…
The propagation of plasmonic waves in various metallic quantum nanostructures have considered attention for their applications in technology. The quantum plasmonic properties of metallic nanostructures in the quantum size regime have been difficult to describe by an appropriate model. Here the nonlocal quantum plasmons are investigated in the most important metals of copper, gold, and silver. Dispersion properties of these metals and propagation of longitudinal quantum plasmons in the high photon energy regime are studied by a new model of nonlocal quantum dielectric permittivity. The epsilon …
The control of quantum states of light at the nanoscale has become possible in recent years with the use of plasmonics. Here, many types of nanophotonic devices and applications have been suggested that take advantage of quantum optical effects, despite the inherent presence of loss. A key example is quantum plasmonic sensing, which provides sensitivity beyond the classical limit using entangled N00N states and their generalizations in a compact system operating below the diffraction limit. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the excitation and propagation of a two-plasmon entangled N0…
Plasmonic nano structures such as wire waveguides or antennas are key building blocks for novel highly integrated photonics. A quantitative understanding of the optical material properties of individual structures on the nanoscale is thus indispensable for predicting and designing the functionality of complex composite elements. In this letter we study propagating surface plasmon polaritons in single silver nanowires isolated from its environment by levitation in a linear Paul trap. Symmetry-breaking effects, e.g., from supporting substrates are completely eliminated in this way. Illuminated w…
High-quality factor plasmonic devices are crucial components in the fields of nanophotonics, quantum computing and sensing. The majority of these devices are required to be fabricated on non-lattice matched or transparent amorphous substrates. Plasmonic devices quality factor is mainly defined by ohmic losses, scattering losses at grain boundaries, and in-plane plasmonic scattering losses of a metal - substrate system. Here, we demonstrate the deposition technique to e-beam evaporate ultralow-loss silver thin films on transparent lattice-mismatched substrates. The process is based on evolution…
Nanoparticle chain waveguide based on negative-epsilon material is investigated through a generic 3D finite-element Bloch-mode solver which derives complex propagation constant ($k$). Our study starts from waveguides made of non-dispersive material, which not only singles out "waveguide dispersion" but also motivates search of new materials to achieve guidance at unconventional wavelengths. Performances of gold or silver chain waveguides are then evaluated; a concise comparison of these two types of chain waveguides has been previously missing. Beyond these singly-plasmonic chain waveguides, w…
We show that second harmonic generation can be enhanced by Fano resonant coupling of asymmetric plasmonic metal nanostructures. We develop a theoretical model examining the effects of electromagnetic interaction between two metal nanostructures on the second harmonic generation. We compare the second harmonic generation efficiency of a single plasmonic metal nanostructure with that of two coupled ones. We show that second harmonic generation from a single metal nanostructure can be enhanced about 30 times by attaching a second metal nanostructure with a 10 times higher quality factor than that…
We report here and experimentally demonstrate an actively controlled gatetunable plasmonic metasurface operating in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, where strikingly the operating voltages for reflectance modulation are much less than 1V. The electrically tunable metasurface consists of inverse dolmen structures (iDolmen) patterned on silver and chromium on a quartz substrate and subsequently covered with a 5 nm thin layer of Al2O3 followed by a 110 nm indium tin oxide (ITO) layer, which acts as a transparent electrode. Our designed structures show up to 78 percent change in…
We study a highly controllable perfect plasmonic absorber -- a thin metamaterial layer which possess balanced electric and magnetic responses in some frequency range. We show that this regime is compatible with both metal-backed variant of the structure or its semitransparent variant. This regime can be implemented in a prospective thin-film photovoltaic cell with negligible parasitic losses.
The efficiency of photo-conductive switches, which continue to be used for the generation and detection of THz waves, has been overlooked for a long time. The so far 'optics-dominated' devices are making their way through to new and emerging fields of research that require ultrafast picosecond voltage pulses, as well as to new applications where power efficiency is of uttermost importance. To address the efficiency problems, in this article we present a novel photo-conductive switch that is based on a 3-dimensional design. In contrast to conventional planar designs, our photo-conductive switch…
Deep understanding of plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs)-light interaction over semiconductors surface shows great promises in enhancing their optoelectronic devices efficiency beyond the conventional limit. However, PNP-light interaction critically decided by the distribution density of PNPs over the semiconductor surface which is not entirely understood. Here, a systematic study depicting how the interparticle gap between Silver (Ag) NPs influences the performance of the \b{eta}-Ga2O3 based solar-blind photodetector. Interestingly, a remarkable transition is observed, where the varied interparti…
We demonstrate strong exciton-plasmon coupling in silver nanodisk arrays integrated with monolayer MoS2 via angle-resolved reflectance microscopy spectra of the coupled system. Strong exciton-plasmon coupling is observed with the exciton-plasmon coupling strength up to 58 meV at 77 K, which also survives at room temperature. The strong coupling involves three types of resonances: MoS2 excitons, localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of individual silver nanodisks and plasmonic lattice resonances of the nanodisk array. We show that the exciton-plasmon coupling strength, polariton composit…

We report room temperature lasing in two-dimensional diffractive lattices of silver and gold plasmon particle arrays embedded in a dye-doped polymer that acts both as waveguide and gain medium. As compared to conventional dielectric distributed feedback lasers, a central question is how the underlying band structure from which lasing emerges is modified by both the much stronger scattering and the disadvantageous loss of metal. We use spectrally resolved back-focal plane imaging to measure the wavelength- and angle dependence of emission below and above threshold, thereby mapping the band stru…
Hybrid mesoscale-structures that can combine dielectric optical resonances with plasmon-polaritons are of interest in chip-scale nano-optical communication and sensing. This experimental study shows how a fluorescent microsphere coupled to a silver nanowire can act as a remotely-excited optical antenna. To realize this architecture, self-assembly methodology is used to couple a fluorescent silica microsphere to a single silver nanowire. By exciting propagating surface plasmon polaritons at one end of the nanowire, remote excitation of the Stokes-shifted whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of the m…
Plasmonic circuitry is considered as a promising solution-effective technology for miniaturizing and integrating the next generation of optical nano-devices. A key element is the shared metal network between electrical and optical information enabling an efficient hetero-integration of an electronic control layer and a plasmonic data link. Here, we investigate to what extend surface plasmons and current-carrying electrons interfere in such a shared circuitry. By synchronously recording surface plasmon propagation and electrical output characteristics of single chemically-synthesized silver nan…
Plasmonic metasurfaces provide an effective way to increase the efficiency of several nonlinear processes while maintaining nanoscale dimensions. In this work, nonlinear metasurfaces based on film-coupled silver nanostripes loaded with Kerr nonlinear material are proposed to achieve efficient four-wave mixing (FWM). Highly localized plasmon resonances are formed in the nanogap between the metallic film and nanostripes. The local electric field is dramatically enhanced in this subwavelength nanoregion. These properties combined with the relaxed phase matching condition due to the ultrathin area…
Spontaneous emission (SE) rate of any light emitters directly scales with the locally available modes for photons. The emission rate can be modified, by changing the dielectric environment of light emitters. Generally cavities with modes in resonance to light emission frequency, are used to amplify the light emission rate. The Fermi golden rule predicts that if the cavity modes are offresonant to the emission frequency, then the SE rate is suppressed. In this study, we demonstrate that the SE of colloidal alloyed quantum dots is inhibited by coupling them to chemically synthesized Silver nanow…
Detection of enantiomers is a challenging problem in drug development as well as environmental and food quality monitoring where traditional optical detection methods suffer from low signals and sensitivity. Application of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for enantiomeric discrimination is a powerful approach for the analysis of optically active small organic or large biomolecules. In this work, for enantio-selective sensing we proposed the coupling of disposable chiral plasmonic shurikens supporting the chiral near-field distribution with SERS active silver nanoclusters. As a result o…
Picosecond laser pulses have been used as a surface colouring technique for noble metals, where the colours result from plasmonic resonances in the metallic nanoparticles created and redeposited on the surface by ablation and deposition processes. This technology provides two datasets which we use to train artificial neural networks, data from the experiment itself (laser parameters vs. colours) and data from the corresponding numerical simulations (geometric parameters vs. colours). We apply deep learning to predict the colour in both cases. We also propose a method for the solution of the in…
Bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles enable tuning of the optical response and chemical stability by variation of the composition. The present numerical simulation study compares Ag-Au alloy, Ag@Au core-shell, and Au@Ag core-shell bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles of both spherical and anisotropic (nanotriangle and nanorods) shapes. By studying both spherical and anisotropic (with LSPR in the near-infrared region) shapes, cases with and without interband transitions of Au can be decoupled. Explicit comparisons are facilitated by numerical models supported by careful validation and examination o…
The development of spintronic technology with increasingly dense, high-speed, and complex devices will be accelerated by accessible microscopy techniques capable of probing magnetic phenomena on picosecond time scales and at deeply sub-micron length scales. A recently developed time-resolved magneto-thermal microscope provides a path towards this goal if it is augmented with a picosecond, nanoscale heat source. We theoretically study adiabatic nanofocusing and near-field heat induction using conical gold plasmonic antennas to generate sub-100 nm thermal gradients for time-resolved magneto-ther…
The nonlinear magneto-plasmonics aims to utilize plasmonic excitations to control the mechanisms and taylor the efficiencies of the non-linear light frequency conversion at the nanoscale. We investigate the mechanisms of magnetic second harmonic generation in hybrid gold-cobalt-silver multilayer structures, which support propagating surface plasmon polaritons at both fundamental and second harmonic frequencies. Using magneto-optical spectroscopy in Kretschmann geometry, we show that the huge magneto-optical modulation of the second harmonic intensity is dominated by the excitation of surface p…
The use of metal nanostructures for colourization has attracted a great deal of interest with the recent developments in plasmonics. However, the current top-down colourization methods based on plasmonic concepts are tedious and time consuming, and thus unviable for large-scale industrial applications. Here we show a bottom-up approach where, upon picosecond laser exposure, a full colour palette independent of viewing angle can be created on noble metals. We show that colours are related to a single laser processing parameter, the total accumulated fluence, which makes this process suitable fo…
Featured by prominent flexibility and fidelity in producing sophisticated stereoscopic structures transdimensionally, three-dimensional (3D) laser printing technique has vastly extended the toolkit for delivering diverse functional devices. Yet chiral nanoemitters heavily resorting to artificial structures that manifest efficient emission and tightly confined light-mater interactions simultaneously remains alluring but dauntingly challenging for this technique at this moment. In this work, we assert the chiral photoluminescence is implemented from silver nanostructures of optical duality in on…
Highly nonlinear optical processes, such as multiphoton photoemission, require high intensities, typically achieved with ultrashort laser pulses and, hence, were first observed with the advent of picosecond laser technology. An alternative approach for reaching the required field intensities is offered by localized optical resonances such as plasmons. Here, we demonstrate localized multiphoton photoemission from plasmonic nanostructures under continuous-wave illumination. We use synthesized plasmonic gold nanostars, which exhibit sharp tips with structural features smaller than 5 nm, leading t…

Recently other types of nanotubes including metallic (Au), inorganic (TiO2, HfS2, V7O16, CdSe, MoS2), and polymeric (polyaniline, polyacrylonitrile) have been produced. Herein we present a novel synthetic procedure leading to a new kind of porous, high-surface-area nanoparticle nanotubes (NPNTs). This study characterizes the synthesized silver nanotubes at optical wavelengths. The absorption spectrum of PAN washed silver nanotubes shows an extended absorption peak at visible wavel…
We observe unique absorption resonances in silver/silica multilayer-based epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials that are related to radiative bulk plasmon-polariton states of thin-films originally studied by Ferrell (1958) and Berreman (1963). In the local effective medium, metamaterial descrip- tion, the unique effect of the excitation of these microscopic modes is counterintuitive and captured within the complex propagation constant, not the effective dielectric permittivities. Theoretical anal- ysis of the band structure for our metamaterials shows the existence of multiple Ferrell-Berreman…
A periodic plasmonic meta-material was studied using finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method to investigate the influence of neighboring particles on the near unity optical absorptivity. The meta-material was constructed as a silver nanoparticle (20-90nm) situated above an alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$) dielectric environment. A full parametric sweep of the particle width and the dielectric thickness was conducted. Computational results identified several resonances between the metal-dielectric and metal-air that have potential to broadening the response through stacked geometry. A significant coup…
