By considering (non-relativistic) quantum mechanics as it is done in practice in particular in condensed-matter physics, it is argued that a deterministic, unitary time evolution within a chosen Hilbert space always has a limited scope, leaving a lot of room for embedding the quantum-classical transition into our current theories without recurring to difficult-to-accept interpretations of quantum mechanics. Nonunitary projections to initial and final states, the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, a change of Hilbert space, and the introduction of classical concepts such as external potentials or localized atomic nuclei are widespread in quantum mechanical calculations. Furthermore, quantum systems require classical environments that enable the symmetry breaking that is necessary for creating the atomic configurations of molecules and crystals. This paper argues that such classical environments are provided by finite-temperature macroscopic systems in which the range of quantum correlations and entanglement is limited. This leads to classical behavior on larger scales, and to collapse-like events in all dynamical processes that become coupled to the thermalized degrees of freedom.
Understanding the demarcation line between classical and quantum is an important issue in modern physics. The development of such an understanding requires a clear picture of the various concurrent notions of `classicality' in quantum theory presently in use. Here, we focus on the relationship between Kolmogorov consistency of measurement statistics -- the foundational footing of classical stochastic processes in standard probability theory -- and the commutativity (or absence thereof) of measurement operators -- a concept at the core of quantum theory. Kolmogorov consistency implies that the …
We establish a direct connection of quantum Markovianity of an open quantum system to its classical counterpart by generalizing the criterion based on the information flow. Here, the flow is characterized by the time evolution of Helstrom matrices, given by the weighted difference of statistical operators, under the action of the quantum dynamical evolution. It turns out that the introduced criterion is equivalent to P-divisibility of a quantum process, namely divisibility in terms of positive maps, which provides a direct connection to classical Markovian stochastic processes. Moreover, it is…
We present a quantized quasinormal approach to rigorously describe coupled lossy resonators, and quantify the quantum coupling parameters as a function of distance between the resonators. We also make a direct connection between classical and quantum quasinormal modes parameters and theories, offering new and unique insights into coupled open cavity resonators. We present detailed calculations for coupled microdisk resonators and show striking interference effects that depend on the phase of the quasinormal modes, an effect that is also significant for high quality factor modes. Our results de…

Recently, quantized versions of random walks have been explored as effective elements for quantum algorithms. In the simplest case of one dimension, the theory has remained divided into the discrete-time quantum walk and the continuous-time quantum walk. Though the properties of these two walks have shown similarities, it has remained an open problem to find the exact relation between the two. The precise connection of these two processes, both quantally and classically, is presented. Extension to higher dimensions is also discussed.
The ability to coherently convert the frequency and temporal waveform of single and entangled photons will be crucial to interconnect the various elements of future quantum information networks. Of particular importance in this context is the quantum frequency conversion of photons emitted by material systems able to store quantum information, so called quantum memories. There have been significant efforts to implement quantum frequency conversion using non linear crystals, with non classical light from broadband photon pair sources and solid state emitters. However, so far, solid state quantu…
Simple theorems relating a quantum mechanical system to the corresponding classical one at equilibrium and connecting the quantum eigenvalues to the frequencies of normal modes oscillations are presented. Corresponding to each quantum eigenfunction, a ` classical eigenfunction' is associated. Those belonging to `elementary excitations' play an important role.

We study the classical and quantum rotation numbers of the free rotation of asymmetric top molecules. We show numerically that the quantum rotation number converges to its classical analog in the semi-classical limit. Different asymmetric molecules such as the water molecule are taken as illustrative example. A simple approximation of the classical rotation number is derived in a neighborhood of the separatrix connecting the two unstable fixed points of the system. Furthermore, a signature of the classical tennis racket effect in the spectrum of asymmetric molecules is identified.
We prove that the 2D Ising model is complete in the sense that the partition function of any classical q-state spin model (on an arbitrary graph) can be expressed as a special instance of the partition function of a 2D Ising model with complex inhomogeneous couplings and external fields. In the case where the original model is an Ising or Potts-type model, we find that the corresponding 2D square lattice requires only polynomially more spins w.r.t the original one, and we give a constructive method to map such models to the 2D Ising model. For more general models the overhead in system size ma…
The relationship that is widely presumed to hold between physical theories and their successors, in which the successors in some sense explain the success of the theories they replace, is known commonly as 'reduction.' I argue that one traditional approach to theory reduction in physics, founded on the notion that a superseded theory should simply be a mathematical limit of the theory that supersedes it, is misleading as a general picture of the relationship whereby one theory encompasses the domain of empirical validity of another. I defend an alternative account that builds upon a certain ge…
Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of classical and quantum open systems, which are studied in many areas of physics including optics, optoelectronics, plasmonics, and condensed matter physics. In the semiclassical regime, open systems can be described by phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) capturing the effects of gain and loss in terms of imaginary fields. The EPs that characterize the spectra of such Hamiltonians (HEPs) describe the time evolution of a system without quantum jumps. It is well known that a full quantum treatment describing more generic dynamic…
Quantum electrodynamics in $1 + 1$ space-time dimensions is analytically solvable for massless fermions, while no solution is known for massive fermions. Employing the classical-statistical approach, we simulate the real-time dynamics on a lattice using Wilson fermions with mass $m$ at gauge coupling $g$. It is shown that quantitative properties of the massless Schwinger model are emerging in the limit of large $g/m$. We investigate two scenarios corresponding to opposite charges which are either held fixed or moving back-to-back along the light cone, as employed in effective descriptions for …
We present here a canonical description for quantizing classical maps on a torus. We prove theorems analagous to classical theorems on mixing and ergodicity in terms of a quantum Koopman space $ L^2 (A_\hbar},τ_\hbar) $ obtained as the completion of the algebra of observables $ A_\hbar $ in the norm induced by the following inner product $(A,B) =τ_{\hbar}(A^{\dagger}B) $, where $τ_{\hbar}$ is a linear functional on the algebra analogous to the classical ``integral over phase space.'' We also derive explicit formulas connecting this formulation to the $θ$-torus decomposition of Bargmann space i…
The pointer states and preferred basis of the classical world are that of definite positions and momenta. Here it is shown that the reason for the absence of superposition states is the limited resolution with which observations or measurements are made.
Quantum network is a set of nodes connected with channels, through which the nodes communicate photons and classical information. Classical structural complexity of a quantum network may be defined through its physical structure, i.e. mutual position of nodes and channels connecting them. We show here that the classical structural complexity of a quantum network does not restrict the structural complexity of entanglement graphs, which may be created in the quantum network with local operations and classical communication. We show, in particular, that 1D quantum network can simulate both simple…
Classical physics is about real objects, like apples falling from trees, whose motion is governed by Newtonian laws. In standard Quantum Mechanics only the wave function or the results of measurements exist, and to answer the question of how the classical world can be part of the quantum world is a rather formidable task. However, this is not the case for Bohmian mechanics, which, like classical mechanics, is a theory about real objects. In Bohmian terms, the problem of the classical limit becomes very simple: when do the Bohmian trajectories look Newtonian?
The transition from the quantum to the classical world is not yet understood. Here we take a new approach. Central to this is the understanding that measurement and actualization cannot occur except in some specific basis. But we have no established theory for the emergence of a specific basis.
We investigate quantum effects in the evolution of general systems. For studying such temporal quantum phenomena, it is paramount to have a rigorous concept and profound understanding of the classical dynamics in such a system in the first place. For this reason, we derive from first principles equations of motions that describe the classical propagation in quantum systems. A comparison of this classical model with the actual temporal quantum behavior enables us to identify quantum phenomena in the system's dynamics and distinguish them from static quantum features at individual points in time…
The effects of environmental decoherence on a mass center position of a macroscopic body are studied using the linear quantum Boltzmann equation. The border between the classical world and the quantum one is discussed and the results are illustrated by the recent experiments od Zeilinger group involving C_60 and C_70 fullerenes.
We discuss the propagation dynamics of nonspreading wave packets. We decompose the Hamiltonian into two parts. The first part is such that wave packets is its instantaneous eigenstate and is therefore irrelevant to the propagation of the packet. The second part is shown to be the effective Hamiltonian governing the motion of the packet both classically and quantum mechanically. Thus, analogous to Ehrenfest's theorem, nonspreading wave packets offer another view point directly connecting quantum mechanics and classical mechanics. This analysis also works for non-square-integrable packets, such …
Discord, originally notable as a signature of bipartite quantum correlation,in fact can be nonzero classically, i.e., arising from noisy measurements by one of the two parties. Here we redefine classical discord to quantify channel distortion,in contrast to the previous restriction of classical discord to a state, and we then show a monotonic relationship between classical (channel) discord and channel distortion. We show that classical discord is equivalent to (doubly stochastic) channel distortion by numerically discovering a monotonic relation between discord and total-variation distance for…
We give a simple proof that it is impossible to guarantee the classicality of inputs into any mistrustful quantum cryptographic protocol. The argument illuminates the impossibility of unconditionally secure quantum implementations of essentially classical tasks such as bit commitment with a certified classical committed bit, classical oblivious transfer, and secure classical multi-party computations of secret classical data. It applies to both non-relativistic and relativistic protocols.
We study classical and quantum maps on the torus phase space, in the presence of noise. We focus on the spectral properties of the noisy evolution operator, and prove that for any amount of noise, the quantum spectrum converges to the classical one in the semiclassical limit. The small-noise behaviour of the classical spectrum highly depends on the dynamics generated by the map. For a chaotic dynamics, the outer spectrum consists in isolated eigenvalues (``resonances'') inside the unit circle, leading to an exponential damping of correlations. On the opposite, in the case of a regular map, par…
The imprints left by quantum mechanics in classical (Hamiltonian) mechanics are much more numerous than is usually believed. We show Using no physical hypotheses) that the Schroedinger equation for a nonrelativistic system of spinless particles is a classical equation which is equivalent to Hamilton's equations.
A quasi-Gaussian quantum superposition of Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) stationary states is built in order to describe the transition of the quantum cosmological problem to the related classical dynamics. The obtained HL phase-space superposed Wigner function and its associated Wigner currents describe the conditions for the matching between classical and quantum phase-space trajectories. The matching quantum superposition parameter is associated to the total energy of the classical trajectory which, at the same time, drives the engendered Wigner function to the classical stationary regime. Through th…
