We construct and study perturbative unitarity (i.e., ghost and tachyon analysis) of a $3+1$-dimensional noncompact Weyl-Einstein-Yang-Mills model. The model describes a local noncompact Weyl's scale plus $SU(N)$ phase invariant Higgs-like field, conformally coupled to a generic Weyl-invariant dynamical background. Here, the Higgs-like sector generates the Weyl's conformal invariance of system. The action does not admit any dimensionful parameter and genuine presence of de Sitter vacuum spontaneously breaks the noncompact gauge symmetry in an analogous manner to the Standard Model Higgs mechanism. As to flat spacetime, the dimensionful parameter is generated within the dimensional transmutation in quantum field theories, and thus the symmetry is radiatively broken through the one-loop Effective Coleman-Weinberg potential. We show that the mere expectation of reducing to Einstein's gravity in the broken phases forbids anti-de Sitter space to be its stable vacua. The model is unitary in de Sitter and flat vacua around which a massless graviton, $N^2-1$ massless scalar bosons, $N$ massless Dirac fermions, $N^2-1$ Proca-type massive Abelian and non-Abelian vector bosons are generically propagated.
In this note, we evaluate the Weyl-invariant quadratic curvature tensors for the particular Weyl's gauge field constructed in the $3+1$-dimensional noncompact Weyl-Einstein-Yang-Mills model. We subsequently extend the model to its higher curvature version. Here, we also compute Weyl-invariant extension of topological Gauss-Bonnet term for this specific choice of vector field.
A classical solution to the Yang-Mills theory is given a new semiclassical interpretation. The boundary value problem on a complex time contour which arises from the semiclassical approximation to multiparticle scattering amplitudes is reviewed and applied to the case of Yang- Mills theory. The solution describes a classically for- bidden transition between states with a large average number of particles in the limit $g\rightarrow 0$. It dominates a transition probability with a semiclassical suppression factor equal to twice the action of the well- known BPST instanton. Hence, it is relevant …
We relate the semiclassical limit of the quantum Yang-Mills partition function on a compact oriented surface to the symplectic volume of the moduli space of flat connections, by using an explicit expression for the symplectic form. This gives an independent proof of some recent results of Witten and Forman.
We investigate semiclassical properties of space-time geometry of the low energy limit of reduced four dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills integrals using Monte-Carlo simulations. The limit is obtained by an one-loop approximation of the original Yang-Mills integrals leading to an effective model of branched polymers. We numerically determine the behaviour of the gyration radius, the two-point correlation function and the Polyakov-line operator in the effective model and discuss the results in the context of the large-distance behaviour of the original matrix model.
The imaginary part of the two point functions of the superconformal anomalous currents are extracted from the cross-sections of semiclassical absorption of dilaton, RR-2 form and gravitino by the wrapped D5 branes. From the central terms of the two point functions anomalous Ward identity is established which relates the exact pre-potential of the ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory with the vacuum expectation value of the anomaly multiplet. From the Ward identity, WDVV (Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde) equation can be derived which is solved for the exact pre-potential.
We compute the one-loop string corrections to the Wilson loop, glueball Regge trajectory and stringy hadron masses in the Witten model of non supersymmetric, large-N Yang-Mills theory. The classical string configurations corresponding to the above field theory objects are respectively: open straight strings, folded closed spinning strings, and strings orbiting in the internal part of the supergravity background. For the rectangular Wilson loop we show that besides the standard Luescher term, string corrections provide a rescaling of the field theory string tension. The one-loop corrections to …
The nonextreme Dp-brane solutions in type II supergravity(in the near-horizon limit) are expected to be dual to (p+1)-dimensional noncompact supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories at finite temperature. We study the translationally invariant perturbations along the branes in those backgrounds and calculate quasinormal frequencies numerically. These frequencies should determine the thermalization time scales in the dual Yang-Mills theories.
A new classical solution for the Yang-Mills theory in which the Euclidean energy plays a role of a parameter is discussed. The instanton and sphaleron are shown to be particular examples of this more general solution. The energy parameter for them takes on special values, which are zero and sphaleron mass for the instanton and sphaleron, respectively. The solution is employed to describe the tunneling process, which is accompanied by a variation of the topological charge. A range of temperatures, where the new solution makes this tunneling more effective than the known mechanisms based on the …
We consider a general ansatz for solving the 2-dimensional Hitchin's equations, which arise as dimensional reduction of the 4-dimensional self-dual Yang-Mills equations, with remarkable integrability properties. We focus on the case when the gauge group G is given by a real form of SL(2,C). For G=SO(2,1), the resulting field equations are shown to reduce to either the Liouville, elliptic sinh-Gordon or elliptic sine-Gordon equations. As opposed to the compact case, given by G=SU(2), the field equations associated with the noncompact group SO(2,1) are shown to have smooth real solutions with no…
We study the quantum mechanical motion in the $x^2y^2$ potentials with $n=2,3$, which arise in the spatially homogeneous limit of the Yang-Mills (YM) equations. These systems show strong stochasticity in the classical limit ($\hbar = 0$) and exhibit a quantum mechanical confinement feature. We calculate the partition function $Z(t)$ going beyond the Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation by means of the semiclassical expansion using the Wigner-Kirkwood (WK) method. We derive a novel compact form of the differential equation for the WK function. After separating the motion in the channels of the equip…
We consider a semiclassical multiwrapped circular string pulsating on S_5, whose center of mass has angular momentum J on an S_3 subspace. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we argue that the one-loop anomalous dimension of the dual operator is a simple rational function of J/L, where J is the R-charge and L is the bare dimension of the operator. We then reproduce this result directly from a super Yang-Mills computation, where we make use of the integrability of the one-loop system to set up an integral equation that we solve. We then verify the results of Frolov and Tseytlin for circular rotati…
The infrared structure of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is studied by means of lattice gauge simulations using a new constrained cooling technique. This method reduces the action while all Polyakov lines on the lattice remain unchanged. In contrast to unconstrained cooling, quark confinement is still intact. A study of the Hessian of the Yang-Mills action shows that low action (semi-) classical configurations can be achieved, with a characteristic splitting between collective modes and higher momentum modes. Besides confinement, the semiclassical configurations also support the topological susceptib…
We present a semiclassical calculation of instanton effects in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory formulated on R^{3}XS^{1} and also in the N=1 theory obtained by introducing chiral multiplet masses. In the N=4 case, these instanton effects are related to the bulk contribution to the index which counts BPS dyons in the corresponding four dimensional theory. In both cases, the calculations provide semiclassical tests of recently proposed exact results for the lowest non-trivial terms in the derivative expansion of the Wilsonian effective action.
A classical solution to the Yang-Mills theory is given a new semiclassical interpretation in terms of particle scattering. It solves the complex time boundary value problem, which arises in the semiclassical approximation to a multi particle transition probability in the one-instanton sector at fixed energy. The imaginary part of the action of the solution on the complex time contour and its topological charge obey the same relation as the self-dual Euclidean configurations. Hence the solution is relevant for the problem of tunneling with fermion number violation in the electroweak theory. It …
We discuss thermalization of isolated quantum systems by using the Husimi-Wehrl entropy evaluated in the semiclassical treatment. The Husimi-Wehrl entropy is the Wehrl entropy obtained by using the Husimi function for the phase space distribution. The time evolution of the Husimi function is given by smearing the Wigner function, whose time evolution is obtained in the semiclassical approximation. We show the efficiency and usefullness of this semiclassical treatment in describing entropy production of a couple of quantum mechanical systems, whose classical counter systems are known to be chao…
We employ holographic duality to compute $\langle T_{μν} \rangle$ in strongly coupled $\mathcal N = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and then study evolution of the semiclassical Einstein field equations sourced by $\langle T_{μν} \rangle$. Linearizing about de Sitter space, we find that the semiclassical equations of motion reduce to a four dimensional scalar wave equation coupled to a five dimensional scalar wave equation. We compute the mode spectrum of these equations and find that there exists a critical value of the Hubble constant $H_c$ for which de Sitter space is unstable when $H <…
We prove that for $SU(2)$ and $SO(3)$ quantum gauge theory on a torus, holonomy expectation values with respect to the Yang-Mills measure $dμ_T(ø) =N_T^{-1}e^{-S_{YM}(ø)/T}[{\cal D}ø]$ converge, as $T\downarrow 0$, to integrals with respect to a symplectic volume measure $μ_0$ on the moduli space of flat connections on the bundle. These moduli spaces and the symplectic structures are described explicitly.
We present a reformulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge, where the non-Abelian gauge field components are exactly integrated out at the expense of a new Abelian tensor field. The latter can be treated in a semiclassical approximation and the corresponding saddle point equation is derived. Besides the non-trivial solutions, which are presumably related to non-perturbative interactions for the Abelian gauge field, the equation of motion for the tensor fields allows for a trivial solution as well. We show that the semiclassical expansion around this trivial solution is …
A mechanism for emergent gravity on brane solutions in Yang-Mills matrix models is exhibited. Newtonian gravity and a partial relation between the Einstein tensor and the energy-momentum tensor can arise from the basic matrix model action, without invoking an Einstein-Hilbert-type term. The key requirements are compactified extra dimensions with extrinsic curvature M^4 x K \subset R^D and split noncommutativity, with a Poisson tensor θ^{ab} linking the compact with the noncompact directions. The moduli of the compactification provide the dominant degrees of freedom for gravity, which are trans…
The planar N=2* Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory is solved at large 't Hooft coupling using localization on S(4). The solution permits detailed investigation of the resonance phenomena responsible for quantum phase transitions in infinite volume, and leads to quantitative predictions for the semiclassical string dual of the N=2* theory.
We construct two-dimensional N=(2,2) lattice super Yang-Mills theory, where the gauge and Higgs fields are all represented by U(N) compact variables, with keeping one exact supercharge along the line of the papers [1,2,3]. Interestingly, requirements of the exact supersymmetry as well as of the compact gauge and Higgs fields lead to the gauge group U(N) rather than SU(N). As a result of the perturbative renormalization argument, the model is shown to flow to the target continuum theory without any fine-tuning. Different from the case of noncompact Higgs fields, the path integral along the flat…
We study singular time-dependent $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS configurations in the abelian sector of ${{\mathcal N}= 4}$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory that represent BPS string-like defects in ${{\mathbb R}\times S^3}$ spacetime. Such BPS strings can be described as intersections of the zeros of holomorphic functions in two complex variables with a 3-sphere. We argue that these BPS strings map to $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS surface operators under the state-operator correspondence of the CFT. We show that the string defects are holographically dual to noncompact probe D3-branes in global $AdS_5\times S^5$ that…
Scattering amplitudes of any four-dimensional theory with nonabelian gauge group $\mathcal G$ may be recast as two-dimensional correlation functions on the asymptotic two-sphere at null infinity. The soft gluon theorem is shown, for massless theories at the semiclassical level, to be the Ward identity of a holomorphic two-dimensional $\mathcal G$-Kac-Moody symmetry acting on these correlation functions. Holomorphic Kac-Moody current insertions are positive helicity soft gluon insertions. The Kac-Moody transformations are a $CPT$ invariant subgroup of gauge transformations which act nontriviall…
Abelian potentials of pointlike moving sources are obtained from the nonstandard theory of Yang--Mills field. They are used for the construction of the time-symmetric and time-asymmetric Fokker-type action integrals describing the dynamics of two-particle system with confinement interaction. The time-asymmetric model is reformulated in the framework of the Hamiltonian formalism. The corresponding two-body problem is reduced to quadratures. The behaviour of Regge trajectories is estimated within the semiclassical consideration.
We construct a spinfoam model for Yang-Mills theory coupled to quantum gravity in three dimensional riemannian spacetime. We define the partition function of the coupled system as a power series in g_0^2 G that can be evaluated order by order using grasping rules and the recoupling theory. With respect to previous attempts in the literature, this model assigns the dynamical variables of gravity and Yang-Mills theory to the same simplices of the spinfoam, and it thus provides transition amplitudes for the spin network states of the canonical theory. For SU(2) Yang-Mills theory we show explicitl…
Yang-Mills theory as the foundation for quantum chromodynamics is a non-Abelian gauge theory with self-interactions between vector particles. Here, we study the Yang-Mills Hamiltonian with nonlinear color oscillations in the absence of external sources corresponding to the group $SU(2)$. In the quantum domain, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian using the optimized trigonometric basis expansion method and find accurate energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for one and two degrees of freedom. We also compare our results with the semiclassical solutions.
In four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$, we present a closed-form solution for a family of integrated four-point functions involving stress tensor multiplet composites of arbitrary R-charge. These integrated correlators are shown to be equivalent to a one-dimensional semi-infinite lattice of harmonic oscillators with nearest-neighbor interactions, evolving over the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The solution, exceptionally simple in an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariant eigenbasis, is exact in the R-charge $p$, rank $N$, and complexified gauge …
We consider the scalar operators corresponding to semiclassical string states in AdS_5xS^5 with the three angular momenta in S^5 non-trivial. The string states recieve quantum corrections and we study the corresponding process on the gauge theory side. The anomalous dimension of the scalar operators is computed using the Bethe ansatz and we find the correction that corresponds to the energy of the quantized string. We restrict for simplicity to the case where two of the angular momenta in S^5 are equal.

We find a two-parameter family of solutions of the Yang-Mills equations for gauge group SO(1,3) on Minkowski space by foliating different parts of it with non-compact coset spaces with SO(1,3) isometry. The interior of the lightcone is foliated with hyperbolic space $H^3\cong \text{SO}(1,3)/\text{SO}(3)$, while the exterior of the lightcone employs de Sitter space dS$_3\cong \text{SO}(1,3)/\text{SO}(1,2)$. The lightcone itself is parametrized by SO(1,3)/ISO(2) in a nilpotent fashion. Equivariant reduction of the SO(1,3) Yang-Mills system on the first two coset spaces yields a mechanical system…
We study the binding energy of a heavy quark-antiquark ($q\bar{q}$) pair using the first-order path integral formalism. This makes the Yang-Mills constraint equation explicit, and highlights that it is valid without relying on a semiclassical approximation. A generalized gauge-covariant Coulomb gauge is chosen to allow for a decomposition of the chromoelectric field into a gauge-covariant generalization of transverse and longitudinal parts. This decomposition makes it clear that the $q\bar{q}$ binding energy is determined solely by the solution to the constraint equation. Assuming that the low…
Anomalous dimensions of high-twist Wilson operators in generic gauge theories occupy a band of width growing logarithmically with their conformal spin. We perform a systematic study of its fine structure in the autonomous SL(2) subsector of the dilatation operator of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory which is believed to be integrable to all orders in 't Hooft coupling. We resort in our study on the framework of the Baxter equation to unravel the properties of the ground state trajectory and the excited trajectories in the spectrum. We use two complimentary approaches in our analysis based on…
New collective coordinates, related to the field at the `center' of the monopoles, are proposed. A systematic computation of the infrared properties of 2+1- and 3+1- dimensional Yang-Mills theory is now possible and is related to solutions of classical equations with constraints at isolated points. For 2+1-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, monopoles of a specific size proportional to $g^{-2}$ dominate and a semiclassical technique is applicable. For 3+1-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, the formalism incorporates a monopole condensate naturally, and is therefore a correct starting point for computat…

Asymptotic symmetries at future null infinity (I+) of Minkowski space for electrodynamics with massless charged fields, as well as non-Abelian gauge theories with gauge group G, are considered at the semiclassical level. The possibility of charge/color flux through I+ suggests the symmetry group is infinite-dimensional. It is conjectured that the symmetries include a G Kac-Moody symmetry whose generators are "large" gauge transformations which approach locally holomorphic functions on the conformal two-sphere at I+ and are invariant under null translations. The Kac-Moody currents are construct…
Yang-Mills theory with a symmetry algebra that is the semidirect product $\mathfrak{h}\ltimes\mathfrak{h}^*$ defined by the coadjoint action of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ on its dual $\mathfrak{h}^*$ is studied. The gauge group is the semidirect product ${\rm G}_{\mathfrak{h}}\ltimes{\mathfrak{h}^*}$, a noncompact group given by the coadjoint action on $\mathfrak{h}^*$ of the Lie group ${\rm G}_{\mathfrak{h}}$ of $\mathfrak{h}$. For $\mathfrak{h}$ simple, a method to construct the self-antiself dual instantons of the theory and their gauge non\-equivalent deformations is presented. Every ${\…
Using the low energy effective action of the N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory we calculate the free energy at finite temperature, both in the semiclassical region and in the dual monopole/dyon theory. In all regions the free energy depends on both the temperature T and the appropriate moduli parameter, and is thus minimized only for specific values of the moduli parameter, in contrast to the T=0 case where the energy vanishes all over the moduli space. Within the validity of perturbation theory, we find that the finite temperature Yang-Mills theory is stable only at definite points i…
It is believed that in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory observables are $N$-branched functions of the topological $θ$ angle. This is supposed to be due to the existence of a set of locally-stable candidate vacua, which compete for global stability as a function of $θ$. We study the number of $θ$ vacua, their interpretation, and their stability properties using systematic semiclassical analysis in the context of adiabatic circle compactification on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$. We find that while observables are indeed N-branched functions of $θ$, there are only $\approx N/2$ locally-stable candidate vac…
We consider Yang-Mills theory with the coupling constant and theta angle determined by the vacuum expectation values of a dynamical (complex) dilaton field. We discuss the tree-level N-gluon MHV scattering amplitudes in the presence of a nontrivial background dilaton field and construct the corresponding celestial amplitudes by taking Mellin transforms with respect to the lightcone energies. In this way, we obtain two-dimensional CFT correlators of primary fields on the celestial sphere. We show that the celestial Yang-Mills amplitudes evaluated in the presence of a spherical dilaton shockwave…
We compute semiclassical three-point correlation function, or structure constant, of two finite-size (dyonic) giant magnon string states and a light dilaton mode in the Lunin-Maldacena background, which is the γ-deformed, or TsT-transformed AdS_5 x S_γ^5, dual to N = 1 super Yang-Mills theory. We also prove that an important relation between the structure constant and the conformal dimension, checked for the N = 4 super Yang-Mills case, still holds for the γ-deformed string background.
We present a first step towards generalizing the work of Seiberg and Witten on N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to arbitrary gauge groups. Specifically, we propose a particular sequence of hyperelliptic genus $n-1$ Riemann surfaces to underly the quantum moduli space of $SU(n)$ N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory. These curves have an obvious generalization to arbitrary simply laced gauge groups, which involves the A-D-E type simple singularities. To support our proposal, we argue that the monodromy in the semiclassical regime is correctly reproduced. We also give some remarks on a possible re…
We study correlation functions in topologically twisted $\mathcal{N}=2, d=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for gauge groups of rank larger than one on compact four-manifolds $X$. We find that the topological invariance of the generator of correlation functions of BRST invariant observables is not spoiled by noncompactness of field space. We show how to express the correlators on simply connected manifolds of $b_{2,+}(X)>0$ in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants and the classical cohomology ring of $X$. For manifolds $X$ of simple type and gauge group SU(N) we give explicit expressions of the…
Two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is a useful model of an exactly solvable gauge theory with a string theory dual at large $N$. We calculate entanglement entropy in the $1/N$ expansion by mapping the theory to a system of $N$ fermions interacting via a repulsive entropic force. The entropy is a sum of two terms: the "Boltzmann entropy", $\log \dim (R)$ per point of the entangling surface, which counts the number of distinct microstates, and the "Shannon entropy", $- \sum p_R \log p_R$, which captures fluctuations of the macroscopic state. We find that the entropy scales as $N^2$ in the large $…
We consider duality transformations in N=2, d=4 Yang--Mills theory coupled to N=2 supergravity. A symplectic and coordinate covariant framework is established, which allows one to discuss stringy `classical and quantum duality symmetries' (monodromies), incorporating T and S dualities. In particular, we shall be able to study theories (like N=2 heterotic strings) which are formulated in symplectic basis where a `holomorphic prepotential' F does not exist, and yet give general expressions for all relevant physical quantities. Duality transformations and symmetries for the N=1 matter coupled Yan…
