In recent work of Luo and Hou, a new scenario for finite time blow up in solutions of 3D Euler equation has been proposed. The scenario involves a ring of hyperbolic points of the flow located at the boundary of a cylinder. In this paper, we propose a two dimensional model that we call "hyperbolic Boussinesq system". This model is designed to provide insight into the hyperbolic point blow up scenario. The model features an incompressible velocity vector field, a simplified Biot-Savart law, and a simplified term modeling buoyancy. We prove that finite time blow up happens for a natural class of initial data.
In this paper, we prove some blow-up criteria for the 3D Boussinesq system with zero heat conductivity and MHD system and Landau-Lifshitz equations in a bounded domain.
The 2D conservative Boussinesq system describes inviscid, incompressible, buoyant fluid flow in gravity field. The possibility of finite time blow up for solutions of this system is a classical problem of mathematical hydrodynamics. We consider a 1D model of 2D Boussinesq system motivated by a particular finite time blow up scenario. We prove that finite time blow up is possible for the solutions to the model system.
We prove the local in time existence and a blow up criterion of solution in the Hölder spaces for the inviscid Boussinesq system in $R^{N},N\geq2$, under the assumptions that the initial values $θ_{0},u_{0}\in C^{r}$, with $r>1$.
In this paper we establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions in $H^s$ for $s > \frac{n}{2}$ to the viscous, zero thermal-diffusive Boussinesq equations in $\mathbb{R}^n , n = 2,3$. Beale-Kato-Majda type blow-up criterion has been established in three-dimensions with respect to the $BMO$-norm of the vorticity. We further prove the local-in-time existence and blow-up criterion for non-viscous and fully ideal Boussinesq systems. Commutator estimates due to Kato and Ponce (1988) \cite {KP} and Fefferman et. al. (2014) \cite {Fe} play important roles in the calculations.
In this paper we derive kinematic relations for quantities involving the rate of strain tensor and the Hessian of the pressure for solutions of the 3D Euler equations and the 2D Boussinesq equations. Using these kinematic relations, we prove new blow up criteria and obtain conditions for the absence of type I singularity for these equations. We obtain both global and localized versions of the results. Some of the new blow up criteria and type I conditions improve previous results of [3].
We propose a system of equations with nonlocal flux in two space dimensions which is closely modeled after the 2D Boussinesq equations in a hyperbolic flow scenario. Our equations involve a simplified vorticity stretching term and Biot-Savart law and provide insight into the underlying intrinsic mechanisms of singularity formation. We prove stable, controlled finite time blowup involving upper and lower bounds on the vorticity up to the time of blowup for a wide class of initial data.
The three-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq system is one of the important equations in fluid dynamics. The system describes the motion of temperature-dependent incompressible flows. And the temperature naturally has diffusion. Recently, Elgindi, Ghoul and Masmoudi constructed a $C^{1,α}$ finite time blow-up solutions for Euler systems with finite energy. Inspired by their works, we constructed $C^{1,α}$ finite time blow-up solution for Boussinesq equations where the temperature has diffusion and finite energy. Generally speaking, the diffusion of temperature smooths the solution of the sy…
The 2d Boussinesq equations model large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Whether its solutions develop a singularity in finite-time remains a classical open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. In this work, blowup from smooth nontrivial initial velocities in stagnation-point form solutions of this system is established. On an infinite strip $Ω=\{(x,y)\in[0,1]\times\mathbb{R}^+\}$, we consider velocities of the form $u=(f(t,x),-yf_x(t,x))$, with scalar temperature\, $θ=yρ(t,x)$. Assuming $f_x(0,x)$ attains its global maximum only at points $x_i^*$ located on the boundary of $[0,1]$, gen…
Singularity formation of the 3D incompressible Euler equations is known to be extremely challenging. In [18], Elgindi proved that the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations with no swirl and $C^{1,α}$ initial velocity develops a finite time singularity. Inspired by Elgindi's work, we proved that the 3D axisymmetric Euler and 2D Boussinesq equations with $C^{1,α}$ initial velocity and boundary develop a stable asymptotically (or approximately) self-similar finite time singularity [8]. On the other hand, the authors of [35,52] recently showed that blowup solutions to the 3D Euler equations are hydrodyn…
Inspired by the numerical evidence of a potential 3D Euler singularity by Luo-Hou [30,31] and the recent breakthrough by Elgindi [11] on the singularity formation of the 3D Euler equation without swirl with $C^{1,α}$ initial velocity, we prove the finite time singularity for the 2D Boussinesq and the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations with boundary and $C^{1,α}$ initial data for the velocity (and density in the case of Boussinesq equations). Our finite time blowup solution for the 3D Euler equations and the singular solution considered in [30,31] share many essential features, including the symme…

We revisit a family of infinite-energy solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations proposed by Gibbon et al. [9] and shown to blowup in finite time by Constantin [6]. By adding a damping term to the momentum equation we examine how the damping coefficient can arrest this blowup. Further, we show that similar infinite-energy solutions of the inviscid 3D Boussinesq system with damping can develop a singularity in finite time as long as the damping effects are insufficient to arrest the (undamped) 3D Euler blowup in the associated damped 3D Euler system.
We give a direct proof of the fact that the $L^{p)$-norms of global solutions of the Boussinesq system in $R^{3}$ grow large as $ t \rightarrow + \infty $ for $ 1 < p < 3 $ and decay to zero for $ 3 < p \leq \infty $, providing exact estimates from below and above using a suitable decomposition of the space-time space $ R^{+} \times R^{3} $. In particular, the kinetic energy blows up as $ \| u(t) \|_{2}^{2} \sim c t^{1/2} $ for large time. This contrasts with the case of the Navier-Stokes equations.
This paper studies of a variation of the hyperbolic blow up scenario suggested by Hou and Luo's recent numerical simulation [12]. In particular, we propose a "hyperbolic" surface quasi-geostrophic equation characterized by a incompressible velocity field with a modified Biot-Savart law. For this model, we will show Finite time blow up for a wide class of initial data.
Recently, a new singularity formation scenario for the 3D axi-symmetric Euler equation and the 2D inviscid Boussinesq system has been proposed by Hu and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations [15, 16]. As the firrst step to understand the scenario, models with simplified sign-definite Biot-Savart law and forcing have recently been studied in [7, 6, 8, 12, 14, 18]. In this paper, we aim to bring back one of the complications encountered in the original equation - the sign changing kernel in the Biot-Savart law. This makes analysis harder, as there are two competing terms in the fluid velo…
We consider an initial boundary value problem for a 2x2 system of conservation laws modeling heatless adsorption of a gaseous mixture with two species and instantaneous exchange kinetics, close to the system of Chromatography. In this model the velocity is not constant because the sorption effect is taken into account. Exchanging the roles of the x, t variables we obtain a strictly hyperbolic system with a zero eigenvalue. Our aim is to construct a solution with a velocity which blows up at the corresponding characteristic "hyperbolic boundary" {t = 0}.
For the first order 1D $n\times n$ quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system $\partial_tu+F(u)\partial_xu=0$ with $u(x, 0)=\varepsilon u_0(x)$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is small, $u_0(x)\not\equiv 0$ and $u_0(x)\in C_0^2(\mathbb R)$, when at least one eigenvalue of $F(u)$ is genuinely nonlinear, it is well-known that on the finite blowup time $T_{\varepsilon}$, the derivatives $\partial_{t,x}u$ blow up while the solution $u$ keeps to be small. For the 1D scalar equation or $2\times 2$ strictly hyperbolic system (corresponding to $n=1, 2$), if the smooth solution $u$ blows up in finite time, then the…

This paper is devoted to the derivation and mathematical analysis of a wave-structure interaction problem which can be reduced to a transmission problem for a Boussinesq system. Initial boundary value problems and transmission problems in dimension d= 1 for $2\times2$ hyperbolic systems are well understood. However, for many applications, and especially for the description of surface water waves, dispersive perturbations of hyperbolic systems must be considered. We consider here a configuration where the motion of the waves is governed by a Boussinesq system (a dispersive perturbation of the h…

We prove global well-posedness, scattering and blow-up results for energy-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the hyperbolic space. We show in particular the existence of a critical element for scattering for all energy-subcritical power nonlinearities. For mass-supercritical nonlinearity, we show a scattering vs blow-up dichotomy for radial solutions of the equation in low dimension, below natural mass and energy thresholds given by the ground states of the equation. The proofs are based on trapping by mass and energy, compactness and rigidity, and are similar to the ones …
In this paper we analyze the decay and the growth for large time of weak and strong solutions to the three-dimensional viscous Boussinesq system. We show that generic solutions blow up as $t\to\infty$ in the sense that the energy and the $L^p$-norms of the velocity field grow to infinity for large time, for $1\le p<3$. In the case of strong solutions we provide sharp estimates both from above and from below and explicit asymptotic profiles. We also show that solutions arising from $(u_0,θ_0)$ with zero-mean for the initial temperature $θ_0$ have a special behavior as $|x|$ or $t$ tends to infi…
We investigate existence and nonexistence of global in time nonnegative solutions to the semilinear heat equation, with a reaction term of the type $e^{μt}u^p$ ($μ\in\mathbb{R}, p>1$), posed on cones of the hyperbolic space. Under a certain assumption on $μ$ and $p$, related to the bottom of the spectrum of $-Δ$ in $\mathbb H^n$, we prove that any solution blows up in finite time, for any nontrivial nonnegative initial datum. Instead, if the parameters $μ$ and $p$ satisfy the opposite condition we have: (a) blow-up when the initial datum is large enough, (b) existence of global solutions when …
In this article, we establish the existence of a family of hypersurfaces $(Γ(t))_{0< t \leq T}$ which evolve by the vanishing mean curvature flow in Minkowski space and which as $t$ tends to~$0$ blow up towards a hypersurface which behaves like the Simons cone at infinity. This issue amounts to investigate the singularity formation for a second order quasilinear wave equation. Our constructive approach consists in proving the existence of finite time blow up solutions of this hyperbolic equation under the form $u(t,x) \sim t^ {ν+1} Q\Big(\frac {x} {t^ {ν+1}} \Big) $, where~$Q$ is a stationary …
Consideration is given to three different full dispersion Boussinesq systems arising as asymptotic models in the bi-directional propagation of weakly nonlinear surface waves in shallow water. We prove that, under a non-cavitation condition on the initial data, these three systems are well-posed on a time scale of order $\mathcal{O}(\frac1\varepsilon)$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter measuring the weak non-linearity of the waves. This result seems new for one of these systems, even for short time. The two other systems involve surface tension, and for one of them, the non-cavitation c…
In the present paper, we investigate blow-up and lifespan estimates for a class of semilinear hyperbolic coupled system in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geqslant 1$, which is part of the so-called Nakao's type problem weakly coupled a semilinear damped wave equation with a semilinear wave equation with nonlinearities of derivative type. By constructing two time-dependent functionals and employing an iteration method for unbounded multiplier with slicing procedure, the results of blow-up and upper bound estimates for the lifespan of energy solutions are derived. The model seems to be hyperbolic-like i…
In three spatial dimensions, we study the Cauchy problem for the model wave equation $- \partial_t^2 Ψ+ (1 + Ψ)^P ΔΨ= 0$ for $P \in \lbrace 1,2 \rbrace$. We exhibit a stable form of finite-time Tricomi-type degeneracy formation that has not previously been studied for quasilinear wave equations. Specifically, using only energy methods and ODE-type techniques, we exhibit an open (in an appropriate Sobolev topology) set of data such that $Ψ$ is initially near $0$ while $1 + Ψ$ vanishes in finite time. In fact, generic data profiles, when appropriately rescaled, lead to the vanishing of $1 + Ψ$ i…
In this paper, we study the formation of finite time singularities in the form of super norm blowup for a spatially inhomogeneous hyperbolic system. The system is related to the variational wave equations as those in [18]. The system posses a unique $C^1$ solution before the emergence of vacuum in finite time, for given initial data that are smooth enough, bounded and uniformly away from vacuum. At the occurrence of blowup, the density becomes zero, while the momentum stays finite, however the velocity and the energy are both infinity.
The problem we are concerned with is whether singularities form in finite time in incompressible fluid flows. It is well known that the answer is ``no'' in the case of Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in dimension two. In dimension three it is still an open problem for these equations. In this paper we focus on a two-dimensional active scalar model for the 3D Euler vorticity equation. Constantin, Majda and Tabak suggested, by studying rigorous theorems and detailed numerical experiments, a general principle: ``If the level set topology in the temperature field for the 2D quasi-geostrophic act…
We investigate a hyperbolic PDE, modeling wave propagation in viscoelastic media, under the influence of a linear memory term of Boltzmann type, and a nonlinear damping modeling friction, as well as an energy-amplifying supercritical nonlinear source: \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_{tt}- k(0) Δu - \int_0^{\infty} k'(s) Δu(t-s) ds + |u_t|^{m-1}u_t=|u|^{p-1}u, \;\;\;\;\; Ω\times (0,T), \\ u(x,t)=u_0(x,t), \quad \text{ in } Ω\times (-\infty,0], \end{cases} \end{align*} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^3$ with a Dirichlét boundary condition. The relaxation kernel $k$ is monotone decreas…
In this paper, we shall study the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system on the Poincar{é} disk model of the 2D-hyperbolic space. We shall investigate how the negative curvature of this Riemannian manifold influences the solutions of this system. As in the 2D-Euclidean case, under the sub-critical condition $χ$M < 8$π$, we shall prove global well-posedness results with any initial L 1-data. More precisely, by using dispersive and smoothing estimates we shall prove Fujita-Kato type theorems for local well-posedness. We shall then use the logarithmic Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev estimates on the hyp…
In this article, we study the long time behavior of solutions of a variant of the Boussinesq system in which the equation for the velocity is parabolic while the equation for the temperature is hyperbolic. We prove that the system has a global attractor which retains some of the properties of the global attractors for the 2D and 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, this attractor contains infinitely many invariant manifolds in which several universal properties of the Batchelor, Kraichnan, Leith theory of turbulence are potentially present.
We consider the hyperbolic-elliptic version of the Davey-Stewartson system with cubic nonlinearity posed on the two dimensional torus. A natural setting for studying blow up solutions for this equation takes place in $H^s, 1/2 < s < 1$. In this paper, we prove a lower bound on the blow up rate for these regularities.
The nonlinear fractional Boussinesq equations are known as the fractional differential equation class that has an important place in mathematical physics. In this study, a method called (G'G^2)-extension method which works well and reveals exact solutions is used to examine nonlinear Boussinesq equations with conformable time-fractional derivatives. This method is a very useful approach and extremely useful compared to other analytical methods. With the proposed method, there are three unique types of solutions such as hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational solutions. This approach can similar…
We consider the following Cauchy problem for the semi linear heat equation on the hyperbolic space: \begin{align}\label{abs:eqn} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} \partial_{t}u=Δ_{\mathbb{H}^{n}} u+ f(u, t) &\hbox{ in }~ \mathbb{H}^{n}\times (0, T),\\ \\ \quad u =u_{0} &\hbox{ in }~ \mathbb{H}^{n}\times \{0\}. \end{array}\right. \end{align} We study Fujita phenomena for the non-negative initial data $u_0$ belonging to $C(\mathbb{H}^{n}) \cap L^{\infty}(\mathbb{H}^{n})$ and for different choices of $f$ of the form $f(u,t) = h(t)g(u).$ It is well-known that for power nonlinearities in $u,$ the power weig…
The memory effects on microscopic kinetic systems have been sometimes modelled by means of the introduction of second order time derivatives in the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations. One prototypical example is the hyperbolic modification of the Burgers equation, that has been introduced to clarify the interplay of hyperbolicity and nonlinear hydrodynamic evolution. Previous studies suggested the finite time blow-up of this equation, and here we present a rigorous proof of this fact.
The question of the global regularity vs finite time blow up in solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equation is a major open problem of modern applied analysis. In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional models of the axisymmetric hyperbolic boundary blow up scenario for the 3D Euler equation proposed by Hou and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations. These models generalize the 1D Hou-Luo model suggested in Hou & Luo's paper, for which finite time blow up has been established in the paper by Kyudong Choi, Thomas Y. Hou, Alexander Kiselev, Guo Luo, Vladimir Sverak, Yao Yao. …
