In previous works we predicted the existence of a $\bar b \bar b u d$ tetraquark with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$ using the static approximation for the $\bar b$ quarks and neglecting heavy spin effects. Since the binding energy is of the same order as expected for these heavy spin effects, it is essential to include them in the computation. Here we present a corresponding method and show evidence that binding is only slightly weakened and that the $\bar b \bar b u d$ tetraquark persists.
The colour fields created by the static tetraquark system are computed in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD, in a 24^3 x 48 lattice at beta=6.2 corresponding to a lattice spacing a=0.07261(85) fm. We find that the tetraquark colour fields are well described by a double-Y, or butterfly, shaped flux tube. The two flux tube junction points are compatible with Fermat points minimizing the total flux tube length. We also compare the diquark-diantiquark central flux tube profile in the tetraquark with the quark-antiquark fundamental flux tube profile in the meson, and they match, thus showing that the tetr…
We revisit the static potential for the $Q Q \bar Q \bar Q$ system using SU(3) lattice simulations, studying both the colour singlets groundstate and first excited state. We consider geometries where the two static quarks and the two anti-quarks are at the corners of rectangles of different sizes. We analyse the transition between a tetraquark system and a two meson system with a two by two correlator matrix. We compare the potentials computed with quenched QCD and with dynamical quarks. We also compare our simulations with the results of previous studies and analyze quantitatively fits of our…
I report on a lattice computation of the energy of a system of two light quarks and two static antiquarks as a function of the separation of the static antiquarks. In terms of hadrons such a system corresponds to a pair of B mesons and its energy to the hadronic potential. I present selected results for different isospin, spin and parity combinations of the individual B mesons mainly focusing on those channels relevant to determine, whether two B mesons may form a bound tetraquark state.
We evaluate the static $qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ and $qqqq\bar{q}$ potentials in the quenched theory at $β=5.8$ and $β=6.0$ on a lattice of size $16^3\times 32$. We compare the static potentials to the sum of two meson potentials for the tetraquark system and to the sum of the baryonic and mesonic potentials for the pentaquark state, as well as, with the confining potential obtained in the strong coupling expansion.
We study the light scalar mesons a_0(980) and kappa using N_f = 2+1+1 flavor lattice QCD. In order to probe the internal structure of these scalar mesons, and in particular to identify, whether a sizeable tetraquark component is present, we use a large set of operators, including diquark-antidiquark, mesonic molecule and two-meson operators. The inclusion of disconnected diagrams, which are technically rather challenging, but which would allow us to extend our work to e.g. the f_0(980) meson, is introduced and discussed.
We study tetraquark resonances with lattice QCD potentials computed for two static quarks and two dynamical quarks, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the emergent wave method of scattering theory. As a proof of concept we focus on systems with isospin $I = 0$, but consider different relative angular momenta $l$ of the heavy $b$ quarks. We compute the phase shifts and search for $\mbox{S}$ and $\mbox{T}$ matrix poles in the second Riemann sheet. We predict a new tetraquark resonance for $l = 1$, decaying into two $B$ mesons, with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^-)$, mass $m = 10576_{-4}^{+4}…
We review how lattice QCD can contribute to the prediction and the comprehension of tetraquarks, pentaquarks and related exotic hadrons, with at least one heavy quark. We include all families of exotic hadrons, except for the quarkless glueballs and the hexaquarks which are related to nuclear physics. Since the discovery of quarks and the development of the QCD theory, there has been a large interest in exotic hadrons, initiated by the tetraquark models developed by Jaffe in 1977. Lattice QCD, being a first principle approach to solve non-perturbative QCD, has been crucial not only to compute …
We investigate spin effects in four-quark systems consisting of two heavy anti-bottom quarks and two light up/down quarks. To this end we use the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We utilize potentials of two static antiquarks in the presence of two quarks of finite mass computed via lattice QCD and solve a coupled-channel Schrödinger equation for the anti-bottom-anti-bottom separation. Without taking heavy quark spins into account this approach predicted a $u d \bar b \bar b$ tetraquark bound state with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$. We now extend this Born-Oppenheimer approach with coupled…
We investigate heavy-light four-quark systems $ud\bar b \bar b$ with bottom quarks of finite mass which are treated in the framework of NRQCD. We focus on $I(J^P)=0(1^+)$, where we recently found evidence for the existence of a tetraquark state using static bottom quarks. Furthermore, we report on an investigation of the $u \bar d b \bar b$ four-quark system with quantum numbers $I(J^P)=1(1^+)$ again using static bottom quarks.
We study tetraquark resonances with lattice QCD potentials computed for a static bbar bbar pair in the presence of two lighter quarks u d, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the emergent wave method. As a proof of concept we focus on the system with isospin I = 0, but consider different relative angular momenta l of the heavy quarks bbar bbar. For l=0 a bound state has already been predicted with quantum numbers I(JP) = 0(1+). Exploring various angular momenta we now compute the phase shifts and search for S and T matrix poles in the second Riemann sheet. We predict a tetraquark resonance …
We review the status of an ongoing long-term lattice investigation of the spectrum and structure of tetraquark candidates. We focus on the light scalar meson $a_0(980)$. First steps regarding the study of a possibly existing $c c \bar{c} \bar{c}$ tetraquark are also outlined.
We present first results of a recently started lattice QCD investigation of antiheavy-antiheavy-light-light tetraquark systems including scattering interpolating operators in correlation functions both at the source and at the sink. In particular, we discuss the importance of such scattering interpolating operators for a precise computation of the low-lying energy levels. We focus on the $\bar b \bar b u d$ four-quark system with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$, which has a ground state below the lowest meson-meson threshold. We carry out a scattering analysis using Lüscher's method to extra…
We use lattice QCD to investigate the spectrum of the $\bar{b} \bar{b} u d$ four-quark system with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$. We use five different gauge-link ensembles with $2+1$ flavors of domain-wall fermions, including one at the physical pion mass, and treat the heavy $\bar{b}$ quark within the framework of lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Our work improves upon previous similar computations by considering in addition to local four-quark interpolators also nonlocal two-meson interpolators and by performing a Lüscher analysis to extrapolate our results to infinite volume. We obtain a b…
We present a general class of operators resembling compact tetraquarks which have a range of colour-flavour-spin structures, transform irreducibly under the symmetries of the lattice and respect other relevant symmetries. These constructions are demonstrated in lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to $m_π=$ 391 MeV. Using the distillation framework, correlation functions involving large bases of meson-meson and tetraquark operators are computed in the isospin-1 hidden-charm and doubly-charmed sectors, and finite-volume spectra are extracted with the variational method. We f…
We use lattice QCD to investigate the existence of strong-interaction-stable antiheavy-antiheavy-light-light tetraquarks. We study the $\bar b \bar b u s$ system with quantum numbers $J^P = 1^+$ as well as the $\bar b \bar c u d$ systems with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(0^+)$ and $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$. We carry out computations on five gauge-link ensembles with $2 + 1$ flavors of domain-wall fermions, including one at the physical pion mass. The bottom quarks are implemented using lattice nonrelativistic QCD, and the charm quarks using an anisotropic clover action. In addition to local diquark-ant…
$\bar b \bar b u d$ and $\bar b \bar b u s$ tetraquarks from lattice QCD using symmetric correlation matrices with both local and scattering interpolating operators
Motivated by multiple phenomenological considerations, we perform the first search for the existence of a $\bar{b}\bar{b}bb$ tetraquark bound state with a mass below the lowest non-interacting bottomonium-pair threshold using the first-principles lattice non-relativistic QCD methodology. We use a full $S$-wave colour/spin basis for the $\bar{b}\bar{b}bb$ operators in the three $0^{++}$, $1^{+-}$ and $2^{++}$ channels. We employ four gluon field ensembles at multiple lattice spacing values ranging from $a = 0.06 - 0.12$ fm, all of which include $u$, $d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea, and one e…
We apply the method of QCD sum rules to study the $s s \bar s \bar s$ tetraquark states of $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$. We construct all the relevant $s s \bar s \bar s$ tetraquark currents, and find that there are only two independent ones. We use them to further construct two weakly-correlated mixed currents. One of them leads to reliable QCD sum rule results and the mass is extracted to be $2.51^{+0.15}_{-0.12}$ GeV, suggesting that the $X(2370)$ or the $X(2500)$ can be explained as the $ss\bar s\bar s$ tetraquark state of $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$. To verify this interpretation, we propose to further study …
We investigate the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson using lattice QCD and considering correlation functions of several $\bar{c} s$ two-quark and $\bar{c} s (\bar{u} u + \bar{d} d)$ four-quark interpolating fields. These interpolating fields generate different structures in color, spin and position space including quark-antiquark pairs, tetraquarks and two-meson scattering states. For our computation we use an ensemble simulated with pion mass $m_π\approx 0.296 \, \textrm{GeV}$ and spatial volume of extent $2.90 \, \textrm{fm}$. We find in addition to the expected spectrum of two-meson scattering stat…
We combine lattice QCD results for the potential of two static antiquarks in the presence of two quarks $q q$ of finite mass and quark model techniques to study possibly existing $q q \bar{b} \bar{b}$ tetraquarks. While there is strong indication for a bound four-quark state for $q q = (ud-du) / \sqrt{2}$, i.e. isospin $I=0$, we find clear evidence against the existence of corresponding tetraquarks with $q q \in \{ uu , (ud+du) / \sqrt{2} , dd \}$, i.e. isospin $I=1$, $q q = s s$ and $q q = c c$.
There are generally two types of Wick contractions in lattice QCD calculations of a correlation function --- connected and disconnected ones. The disconnected contribution is difficult to calculate and noisy, thus it is often neglected. In the context of studying tetraquarks, hadronic molecules and meson-meson scattering, we show that whenever there are both connected and singly disconnected contractions, the singly disconnected part gives the leading order contribution, and thus should never be neglected. As an explicit example, we show that information about the scalar mesons sigma, f0(980),…
Lattice QCD allows us to probe the low-lying hadron spectrum in finite-volume using a basis of single- and multi-hadron interpolating operators. Here we examine the effect of including tetraquark operators on the spectrum in the scalar meson sectors containing the $K_0^*(700)$ ($κ$) and the $a_0(980)$ in $N_f = 2 + 1$ QCD, with $m_π\approx 230$ MeV. Preliminary results of additional finite-volume states found using tetraquark operators are shown, and possible implications of these states are discussed.
We apply the method of QCD sum rules to study the structure $X$ newly observed by the BESIII Collaboration in the $ϕη^\prime$ mass spectrum in 2.0-2.1 GeV region in the $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕηη^\prime$ decay. We construct all the $s s \bar s \bar s$ tetraquark currents with $J^{PC} = 1^{+-}$, and use them to perform QCD sum rule analyses. One current leads to reliable QCD sum rule results and the mass is extracted to be $2.00^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ GeV, suggesting that the structure $X$ can be interpreted as an $s s \bar s \bar s$ tetraquark state with $J^{PC} = 1^{+-}$. The $Y(2175)$ can be interpreted …
Utilizing lattice QCD results for the potential of two static antiquarks and two dynamical quarks as well as quark model techniques for the dynamics of two heavy antiquarks in a cloud of two light quarks, we are provided with an accurate framework for the study of possibly existing heavy-heavy-light-light tetraquarks. Among the possible quantum numbers of such a system, we find binding in only one channel, the scalar isosinglet. Solving the Schroedinger equation for the displacement of the heavy antiquarks and taking systematic errors into account, we find an antibottom-antibottom-light-light …
We continue our study of heavy-light four-quark states and find evidence from lattice QCD for the existence of a strong-interaction-stable $I(J^P)=0(1^+)$ $ud\bar{c}\bar{b}$ tetraquark with mass in the range of 15 to 61 MeV below $\bar{D}B^*$ threshold. Since this range includes the electromagnetic $\bar{D}Bγ$ decay threshold, current uncertainties do not allow us to determine whether such a state would decay electromagnetically, or only weakly. We also perform a study at fixed pion mass, with NRQCD for the heavy quarks, simulating $qq^\prime \bar{b}^\prime \bar{b}$ and $q q^\prime \bar{b}^\pr…
We present preliminary results from a lattice calculation of tetraquark states in the charm and bottom sector of the type $ud\bar{b}\bar{b}$, $us\bar{b}\bar{b}$, $ud\bar{c}\bar{c}$ and $sc\bar{b}\bar{b}$. These calculations are performed on $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ MILC ensembles with lattice spacing of $a = 0.12~\mathrm{fm} $ and $a=0.06~\mathrm{fm} $. A relativistic action with overlap fermions is employed for the light and charm quarks while a non-relativistic action with non-perturbatively improved coefficients is used in the bottom sector. Preliminary results provide a clear indication of presen…
We search for possibly existent bound states in the heavy-light tetraquark channels with quark content $ \bar{b}\bar{b}ud $, $ \bar{b}\bar{b}us $ and $ \bar{b}\bar{c}ud $ using lattice QCD. We carry out calculations on several gauge link ensembles with $ N_f=2+1 $ flavours of domain-wall fermions and consider a basis of local and non-local interpolators. Besides extracting the energy spectrum from the correlation matrices, we also perform a Lüscher analysis to extrapolate our results to infinite volume.
The structure of the tetraquark candidate $Z_{c}(3900)$, which was experimentally reported in $e^+ e^-$ collisions, is studied by the s-wave meson-meson coupled-channel scattering on the lattice. The s-wave interactions among the $πJ/ψ$, $ρη_{c}$ and $D \bar{D}^{*}$ channels are derived from (2+1)-flavor dynamical QCD simulations at $m_π=410$--$700$ MeV. It is found that the interactions are dominated by the off-diagonal $πJ/ψ$-$D \bar{D}^{*}$ and $ρη_{c}$-$D \bar{D}^{*}$ couplings. With the interactions obtained, the s-wave two-body amplitudes and the pole position in the $πJ/ψ$-$ρη_{c}$-$D \…
Charmed tetraquarks $T_{cc}=(cc\bar{u}\bar{d})$ and $T_{cs}=(cs\bar{u}\bar{d})$ are studied through the S-wave meson-meson interactions, $D$-$D$, $\bar{K}$-$D$, $D$-$D^{*}$ and $\bar{K}$-$D^{*}$, on the basis of the (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD simulations with the pion mass $m_π \simeq $410, 570 and 700 MeV. For the charm quark, the relativistic heavy quark action is employed to treat its dynamics on the lattice. Using the HAL QCD method, we extract the S-wave potentials in lattice QCD simulations, from which the meson-meson scattering phase shifts are calculated. The phase shifts in the isospin …
We study light scalar mesons with particular focus on the a_0(980) using lattice QCD with 2+1+1 dynamical quark flavors. To investigate the structure of these scalar mesons and to identify, whether a sizeable tetraquark component is present, we use a large set of operators, including diquark-antidiquark, mesonic molecule and two-meson operators. We find that the low-lying states overlap essentially exclusively with two-meson states. This indicates that in the channels investigated no tightly bound four-quark states of either molecular or diquark-antidiquark type exist.
We study tetraquark resonances using lattice QCD potentials for a pair of static antiquarks $\bar{b}\bar{b}$ in the presence of two light quarks $ud$. The system is treated in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and we use the emergent wave method. We focus on the isospin $I=0$ channel, but consider different orbital angular momenta $l$ of the heavy antiquarks $\bar{b}\bar{b}$. We extract the phase shifts and search for $\mbox{S}$ and $\mbox{T}$ matrix poles on the second Riemann sheet. For orbital angular momentum $l=1$ we find a tetraquark resonance with quantum numbers $I(J^P)=0(1^-)$, reson…
The possible exotic meson $Z_{c}(3900)$, found in $e^+ e^-$ reactions, is studied by the method of coupled-channel scattering in lattice QCD. The interaction among $πJ/ψ$, $ρη_{c}$ and $\bar{D}D^{*}$ channels is derived from (2+1)-flavor QCD simulations at $m_π=410$-$700$ MeV. The interaction is dominated by the off-diagonal $πJ/ψ$-$\bar{D}D^{*}$ and $ρη_{c}$-$\bar{D}D^{*}$ couplings, which indicates that the $Z_{c}(3900)$ is not a usual resonance but a threshold cusp. Semi-phenomenological analyses with the coupled-channel interaction are presented to confirm this conclusion.
According to a recent proposal of the tetraquark mixing framework, the two light-meson nonets in the $J^{P}=0^{+}$ channel, namely the light nonet composed of $a_0 (980)$, $K_0^* (800)$, $f_0 (500)$, $f_0(980)$, and the heavy nonet of $a_0 (1450)$, $K_0^* (1430)$, $f_0 (1370)$, $f_0 (1500)$, can be expressed by linear combinations of the two tetraquark types, one type containing the spin-0 diquark and the other with the spin-1 diquark. Among various consequences of this mixing model, one surprising result is that the second tetraquark with the spin-1 diquark configuration is more important for…
$\bar{b}\bar{b}ud$ Tetraquarks with $I(J^P)=0(1^-)$ and $\bar{b}\bar{c}ud$ Tetraquarks with $I(J^P)=0(0^+)$ and $I(J^P)=0(1^+)$ from Lattice QCD Antistatic-Antistatic Potentials
Recently the LHCb Collaboration announced the first observation of nontrivial structures in the double-$J/ψ$ mass spectrum in the mass range 6.2-7.2 GeV, and a theoretical coupled-channel analysis of these data performed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 132001 (2021) evidenced the existence of a new state $X(6200)$ close to the double-$J/ψ$ threshold. Although its molecular interpretation seems the most plausible assumption, the present data do not exclude an admixture of a compact component in its wave function, for which a fully-charmed compact tetraquark is the most natural candidate. It is argued …

The recent confirmation of the charged charmonium like resonance Z(4430) by the LHCb experiment strongly suggests the existence of QCD multi quarks bound states. Some preliminary results about hypothetical flavored tetraquark mesons are reported. Such states are particularly amenable to Lattice QCD studies as their interpolating operators do not overlap with those of ordinary hidden-charm mesons.
To investigate the light scalar tetraquark candidate $a_0(980)$ (quantum numbers $J^P =0^+$), a correlation matrix including a variety of two- and four-quark interpolating operators has to be computed. We discuss efficient techniques to compute the elements of this correlation matrix, in particular diagrams with closed quark loops. Furthermore, we present evidence that such diagrams are not negligible given our precision, and their contribution is essential to obtain physically meaningful results. In particular, we find indications of the existence of an "additional" state around the two-parti…
Fully-heavy tetraquark states, i.e. $cc\bar{c}\bar{c}$, $bb\bar{b}\bar{b}$, $bb\bar{c}\bar{c}$ ($cc\bar{b}\bar{b}$), $cb\bar{c}\bar{c}$, $cb\bar{b}\bar{b}$, and $cb\bar{c}\bar{b}$, are systematically investigated by means of a non-relativistic quark model based on lattice-QCD studies of the two-body $Q\bar{Q}$ interaction, which exhibits a spin-independent Cornell potential along with a spin-spin term. The four-body problem is solved using the Gaussian expansion method; additionally, the so-called complex scaling technique is employed so that bound, resonance, and scattering states can be trea…
We investigate the possibility of $qq^\prime \bar b \bar b$ tetraquark bound states using $n_f=2+1$ lattice QCD ensembles with pion masses $\simeq 164$, $299$, and $415$ MeV. Motivated by observations from heavy baryon phenomenology, we consider two lattice interpolating operators both of which are expected to couple efficiently to tetraquark states: one with diquark-antidiquark and one with a meson-meson structure. Using nonrelativistic QCD to simulate the bottom quarks, we study the $ud\bar b \bar b$, $\ell s\bar b \bar b$ channels with $\ell=u,d$, and find unambiguous signals for strong-int…
In this article a systematic quantitative analysis of the isoscalar bosonic states is performed in the framework of supersymmetric light front holographic QCD. It is shown that the spectroscopy of the $η$ and $h$ mesons can be well described if one additional mass parameter -- which corresponds to the hard breaking of chiral $U(1)$ symmetry in standard QCD -- is introduced. The mass difference of the $η$ and $η'$ isoscalar mesons is then determined by the strange quark mass content of the $η'$. The theory also predicts the existence of isoscalar tetraquarks which are bound states of diquarks a…
We explore properties of the doubly charged vector tetraquark $Z_{\mathrm{V} }^{++}=[cu][\overline{s}\overline{d}]$ built of four quarks of different flavors using the QCD sum rule methods. The mass and current coupling of $Z_{ \mathrm{V}}^{++}$ are computed in the framework of the QCD two-point sum rule approach by taking into account quark, gluon and mixed vacuum condensates up to dimension $10$. The full width of this tetraquark is saturated by $S$-wave $Z_{\mathrm{V}}^{++} \to π^{+}D_{s1}(2460)^{+},\ ρ^{+}D_{s0}^{\ast }(2317)^{+}$, and $P$-wave $Z_{\mathrm{V}}^{++} \to π^{+}D_{s}^{+},\ K^{…
The colour fields created by the static tetraquark and pentaquark systems are computed in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD, with gauge invariant lattice operators, in a 24^3 x 48 lattice at beta=6.2. We generate our quenched configurations with GPUs, and detail the respective benchmanrks in different SU(N) groups. While at smaller distances the coulomb potential is expected to dominate, at larger distances it is expected that fundamental flux tubes, similar to the flux-tube between a quark and an antiquark, emerge and confine the quarks. In order to minimize the potential the fundamental flux tubes …
We study the manifestly exotic tetraquark D$_{\rm s0}^{++}(cu\bar s \bar d)$ and the scalar tetraquark $f_0(ud \bar u \bar d)$ in SU(3)$_c$ anisotropic quenched lattice QCD with the $O(a)$-improved Wilson (clover) fermion with various quark masses including the idealized SU(4)$_f$ case. For $f_0(ud\bar u \bar d)$ etc., we only consider connected diagrams at the quenched level, i.e., the tetraquark $f_0(ud\bar u\bar d)$ is identical with D$_{\rm s0}^{++} (cu\bar s \bar d)$ in the idealized SU(4)$_f$ case. First, for comparison, we study the lowest $q\bar q$ scalar meson, and find that it has a …
We develop a moment QCD sum rule method augmented by fundamental inequalities to study the existence of exotic doubly hidden-charm/bottom tetraquark states made of four heavy quarks. Using the compact diquark-antidiquark configuration, we calculate the mass spectra of these tetraquark states. There are 18 hidden-charm $cc\bar c\bar c$ tetraquark currents with $J^{PC} = 0^{++}$, $0^{-+}$, $0^{--}$, $1^{++}$, $1^{+-}$, $1^{-+}$, $1^{--}$, and $2^{++}$. We use them to perform QCD sum rule analyses, and the obtained masses are all higher than the spontaneous dissociation thresholds of two charmoni…
Here we study the static potential for the two quarks and two antiquarks system. First this is done using the tetraquark operator, which has been previously used to calculate the static potential. This is found to give good results in the region where the tetraquark is expected to be the ground state, however failing outside it. To repair this, we resort to a variational method. This let us study the first excited state besides the ground state of the system in two different particle dispositions, one where the quarks are on the same side of a rectangle and the other where they are at opposite…
We investigate a doubly-bottomed tetraquark state $T_{bb}$ $(bb \bar{u}\bar{d})$ with quantum number $I(J^P)=0(1^+)$ in $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD. Using the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) quark action for $b$ quarks, we have extracted the coupled channel potential between $\bar{B}\bar{B}^*$ and $\bar{B}^* \bar{B}^*$ in the HAL QCD method at $a \approx 0.09$ {fm} on $32^3\times 64$ lattices. The potential predicts an existence of a bound $T_{bb}$ below the $\bar{B}\bar{B}^*$ threshold. At the physical pion mass $m_π\approx140$ {MeV} extrapolated from $m_π\approx 410,\, 570,\, 700$ {MeV}, a bindi…
