We consider the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere with potential $V(y)=\sum_{k=1}^{d+1}\frac{b_k}{y_k^2}$, where $b_k$ are parameters. Appropriately normalized, the symmetry operators for the Hamiltonian define a representation of the Kohno-Drinfeld Lie algebra on the space of polynomials orthogonal with respect to the Dirichlet distribution. The Gaudin subalgebras generated by Jucys-Murphy elements are diagonalized by families of Jacobi polynomials in $d$ variables on the simplex. We define a set of generators for the symmetry algebra and we prove that their action on the Jacobi polynomials is represented by the multivariable Racah operators introduced in arXiv:0705.1469. The constructions also yield a new Lie-theoretic interpretation of the bispectral property for Tratnik's multivariable Racah polynomials.
The universal character of the Racah algebra will be illustrated by showing that it is at the center of the relations between the Racah polynomials, the recoupling of three su(1,1) representations and the symmetries of the generic second-order superintegrable model on the 2-sphere.
The rank-$1$ Racah algebra $R(3)$ plays a pivotal role in the theory of superintegrable systems. It appears as the symmetry algebra of the $3$-parameter system on the $2$-sphere from which all second-order conformally flat superintegrable models in $2$D can be obtained by means of suitable limits and contractions. A higher rank generalization of $R(3)$, the so-called rank $n-2$ Racah algebra $R(n)$, has been considered recently and showed to be the symmetry algebra of the general superintegrable model on the $(n-1)$-sphere. In the present work, we show that such an algebraic structure naturall…
The Racah algebra and its higher rank extension are the algebras underlying the univariate and multivariate Racah polynomials. In this paper we develop two new models in which the Racah algebra naturally arises as symmetry algebra, namely the Bargmann model and the Barut-Girardello model. We show how both models are connected with the superintegrable model of Miller et al. The Bargmann model moreover leads to a new realization of the Racah algebra of rank $n$ as $n$-variable differential operators. Our conceptual approach also allows us to rederive the basis functions of the superintegrable mo…
The Racah algebra encodes the bispectrality of the eponym polynomials. It is known to be the symmetry algebra of the generic superintegrable model on the $2$-sphere. It is further identified as the commutant of the $\mathfrak{o}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{o}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{o}(2)$ subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(6)$ in oscillator representations of the universal algebra of the latter. How this observation relates to the $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ Racah problem and the superintegrable model on the $2$-sphere is discussed on the basis of the Howe duality associated to the pair $\big(\mathfrak{o}(6)$, $\mathf…
Gasper & Rahman's multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials are shown to arise as connection coefficients between families of multivariate $q$-Hahn or $q$-Jacobi polynomials. The families of $q$-Hahn polynomials are constructed as nested Clebsch--Gordan coefficients for the positive-discrete series representations of the quantum algebra $su_q(1,1)$. This gives an interpretation of the multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials in terms of $3nj$ symbols. It is shown that the families of $q$-Hahn polynomials also arise in wavefunctions of $q$-deformed quantum Calogero--Gaudin superintegrable systems.
Embeddings of the Racah algebra into the Bannai-Ito algebra are proposed in two realizations. First, quadratic combinations of the Bannai-Ito algebra generators in their standard realization on the space of polynomials are seen to generate a central extension of the Racah algebra. The result is also seen to hold independently of the realization. Second, the relationship between the realizations of the Bannai-Ito and Racah algebras by the intermediate Casimir operators of the $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ Racah problems is established. Equivalently, this gives an embedding of t…
A higher rank generalization of the (rank one) Racah algebra is obtained as the symmetry algebra of the Laplace-Dunkl operator associated to the $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$ root system. This algebra is also the invariance algebra of the generic superintegrable model on the $n$-sphere. Bases of Dunkl harmonics are constructed explicitly using a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia theorem. These bases consist of joint eigenfunctions of maximal Abelian subalgebras of the higher rank Racah algebra. A method to obtain expressions for both the connection coefficients between these bases and the action of the symmetries on the…
We show that the symmetry operators for the quantum superintegrable system on the 3-sphere with generic 4-parameter potential form a closed quadratic algebra with 6 linearly independent generators that closes at order 6 (as differential operators). Further there is an algebraic relation at order 8 expressing the fact that there are only 5 algebraically independent generators. We work out the details of modeling physically relevant irreducible representations of the quadratic algebra in terms of divided difference operators in two variables. We determine several ON bases for this model includin…
The Racah algebra, a quadratic algebra with two independent generators, is central in the analysis of superintegrable models and encodes the properties of the Racah polynomials. It is the algebraic structure behind the su(1,1) Racah problem as it is realized by the intermediate Casimir operators arising in the addition of three irreducible su(1,1) representations. It has been shown that this Racah algebra can also be obtained from quadratic elements in the enveloping algebra of su(2). The correspondence between these two realizations is here explained and made explicit.
The recent interest in the study of higher-rank polynomial algebras related to $n$-dimensional classical and quantum superintegrable systems with coalgebra symmetry and their connection with the generalised Racah algebra $R(n)$, a higher-rank generalisation of the rank one Racah algebra $R(3)$, raises the problem of understanding the role played by the $n - 2$ quadratic subalgebras generated by the left and right Casimir invariants (sometimes referred as universal quadratic substructures) from this new perspective. Such subalgebra structures play a signficant role in the algebraic derivation o…
It is shown that the tridiagonalization of the hypergeometric operator $L$ yields the generic Heun operator $M$. The algebra generated by the operators $L,M$ and $Z=[L,M]$ is quadratic and a one-parameter generalization of the Racah algebra. The new Racah-Heun orthogonal polynomials are introduced as overlap coefficients between the eigenfunctions of the operators $L$ and $M$. An interpretation in terms of the Racah problem for $su(1,1)$ algebras and separation of variables in a superintegrable system are discussed.
The analysis of the most general second-order superintegrable system in two dimensions: the generic 3-parameter model on the 2-sphere, is cast in the framework of the Racah problem for the su(1,1) algebra. The Hamiltonian of the 3-parameter system and the generators of its quadratic symmetry algebra are seen to correspond to the total and intermediate Casimir operators of the combination of three su(1,1) algebras, respectively. The construction makes explicit the isomorphism between the Racah-Wilson algebra, which is the fundamental algebraic structure behind the Racah problem for su(1,1), and…
The connection between the recoupling scheme of four copies of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$, the generic superintegrable system on the 3 sphere, and bivariate Racah polynomials is identified. The Racah polynomials are presented as connection coefficients between eigenfunctions separated in different spherical coordinate systems and equivalently as different irreducible decompositions of the tensor product representations. As a consequence of the model, an extension of the quadratic algebra ${\rm QR}(3)$ is given. It is shown that this algebra closes only with the inclusion of an additional shift opera…
The Racah algebra $R(n)$ of rank $(n-2)$ is obtained as the commutant of the \mbox{$\mathfrak{o}(2)^{\oplus n}$} subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(2n)$ in oscillator representations of the universal algebra of $\mathfrak{o}(2n)$. This result is shown to be related in a Howe duality context to the definition of $R(n)$ as the algebra of Casimir operators arising in recouplings of $n$ copies of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$. These observations provide a natural framework to carry out the derivation by dimensional reduction of the generic superintegrable model on the $(n-1)$ sphere which is invariant under $R(n)…
Quadratic algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras; they include the symmetry algebras of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions as special cases. The superintegrable systems are exactly solvable physical systems in classical and quantum mechanics. For constant curvature spaces we show that the free quadratic algebras generated by the 1st and 2nd order elements in the enveloping algebras of their Euclidean and orthogonal symmetry algebras correspond one-to-one with the possible superintegrable systems with potential defined on these spaces. We describe a contraction theory for q…
The goal of the present paper is to provide a detailed study of irreducible representations of the algebra generated by the symmetries of the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere. Appropriately normalized, the symmetry operators preserve the space of polynomials. Under mild conditions on the free parameters, maximal abelian subalgebras of the symmetry algebra, generated by Jucys-Murphy elements, have unique common eigenfunctions consisting of families of Jacobi polynomials in $d$ variables. We describe the action of the symmetries on the basis of Jacobi polynomials in terms…
Recent results on the Racah algebra $\mathcal{R}_n$ of rank $n - 2$ are reviewed. $\mathcal{R}_n$ is defined in terms of generators and relations and sits in the centralizer of the diagonal action of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ in $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes n}$. Its connections with multivariate Racah polynomials are discussed. It is shown to be the symmetry algebra of the generic superintegrable model on the $ (n-1)$ - sphere and a number of interesting realizations are provided.
We describe a contraction theory for 2nd order superintegrable systems, showing that all such systems in 2 dimensions are limiting cases of a single system: the generic 3-parameter potential on the 2-sphere, S9 in our listing. Analogously, all of the quadratic symmetry algebras of these systems can be obtained by a sequence of contractions starting from S9. By contracting function space realizations of irreducible representations of the S9 algebra (which give the structure equations for Racah/Wilson polynomials) to the other superintegrable systems one obtains the full Askey scheme of orthogon…
We characterize the symmetry algebra of the generic superintegrable system on a pseudo-sphere corresponding to the homogeneous space $SO(p,q+1)/SO(p,q)$ where $p+q={\cal N}$, ${\cal N}\in\mathbb N$. We show that this algebra is independent of the signature $(p,q+1)$ of the metric and that it is the same as the Racah algebra ${\cal R}({\cal N}+1)$. The spectrum obtained from ${\cal R}({\cal N}+1)$ via the Daskaloyannis method depends on undetermined signs that can be associated to the signatures. Two examples are worked out explicitly for the cases $SO(2,1)/SO(2)$ and $SO(3)/SO(2)$ where it is …
A quantum superintegrable model with reflections on the 2-sphere is introduced. Its two algebraically independent constants of motion generate a central extension of the Bannai--Ito algebra. The Schrodinger equation separates in spherical coordinates and its exact solutions are presented. It is further observed that the Hamiltonian of the system arises in the addition of three representations of the sl_{-1}(2) algebra (the dynamical algebra of the one-dimensional parabosonic oscillator). The contraction from the two-sphere to the Euclidean plane yields the Dunkl oscillator in two dimensions an…
A kind of systems on the sphere, whose trajectories are similar to the Lissajous curves, are studied by means of one example. The symmetries are constructed following a unified and straightforward procedure for both the quantum and the classical versions of the model. In the quantum case it is stressed how the symmetries give the degeneracy of each energy level. In the classical case it is shown how the constants of motion supply the orbits, the motion and the frequencies in a natural way.
We show explicitly that all 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions are limiting cases of a single system: the generic 3-parameter potential on the 2-sphere, S9 in our listing. We extend the Wigner-Inönü method of Lie algebra contractions to contractions of quadratic algebras and show that all of the quadratic symmetry algebras of these systems are contractions of that of S9. Amazingly, all of the relevant contractions of these superintegrable systems on flat space and the sphere are uniquely induced by the well known Lie algebra contractions of e(2) and so(3). By contracting functio…
We extend the construction of 2D superintegrable Hamiltonians with separation of variables in spherical coordinates using combinations of shift, ladder, and supercharge operators to models involving rational extensions of the two-parameter Lissajous systems on the sphere. These new families of superintegrable systems with integrals of arbitrary order are connected with Jacobi exceptional orthogonal polynomials (EOP) of type I (or II) and supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM). Moreover, we present an algebraic derivation of the degenerate energy spectrum for the one- and two-parameter Lissa…
It has been known since 2007 that the Wilson and Racah polynomials can be characterized as basis functions for irreducible representations of the quadratic symmetry algebra of the quantum superintegrable system on the 2-sphere, $HΨ=EΨ$, with generic 3-parameter potential. Clearly, the polynomials are expansion coefficients for one eigenbasis of a symmetry operator $L_1$ of $H$ in terms of an eigenbasis of another symmetry operator $L_2$, but the exact relationship appears not to have been made explicit. We work out the details of the expansion to show, explicitly, how the polynomials arise and…
Two-dimensional quadratic algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras that include the symmetry algebras of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions as special cases. The superintegrable systems are exactly solvable physical systems in classical and quantum mechanics. Distinct superintegrable systems and their quadratic algebras can be related by geometric contractions, induced by Inönü-Wigner type Lie algebra contractions. These geometric contractions have important physical and geometric meanings, such as obtaining classical phenomena as limits of quantum phenomena as ${\hbar}\to 0…
The $9j$ symbols of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ are studied within the framework of the generic superintegrable system on the 3-sphere. The canonical bases corresponding to the binary coupling schemes of four $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ representations are constructed explicitly in terms of Jacobi polynomials and are seen to correspond to the separation of variables in different cylindrical coordinate systems. A triple integral expression for the $9j$ coefficients exhibiting their symmetries is derived. A double integral formula is obtained by extending the model to the complex three-sphere and taking the c…
Quadratic algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras which include the symmetry algebras of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions as special cases. The superintegrable systems are exactly solvable physical systems in classical and quantum mechanics. Distinct superintegrable systems and their quadratic algebras can be related by geometric contractions, induced by Bôcher contractions of the conformal Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{so}}(4,\mathbb {C})$ to itself. In this paper we give a precise definition of Bôcher contractions and show how they can be classified. They subsume well known c…
The Bannai-Ito algebra is presented together with some of its applications. Its relations with the Bannai-Ito polynomials, the Racah problem for the $sl_{-1}(2)$ algebra, a superintegrable model with reflections and a Dirac-Dunkl equation on the 2-sphere are surveyed.
We consider the differential equation that Zernike proposed to classify aberrations of wavefronts in a circular pupil, as if it were a classical Hamiltonian with a non-standard potential. The trajectories turn out to be closed ellipses. We show that this is due to the existence of higher-order invariants that close into a cubic Higgs algebra. The Zernike classical system thus belongs to the class of superintegrable systems. Its Hamilton-Jacobi action separates in three vertical projections of polar coordinates of a sphere, polar and equidistant coordinates on half-hyperboloids, and also in ell…
We describe all local Riemannian metrics on surfaces whose geodesic flows are superintegrable with one integral linear in momenta and one integral cubic in momenta. We also show that some of these metrics can be extended to the 2-sphere. This gives us new examples of Hamiltonian systems on the sphere with integrals of degree three in momenta, and the first examples of superintegrable metrics of nonconstant curvature on a closed surface
Construction of superintegrable systems based on Lie algebras have been introduced over the years. However, these approaches depend on explicit realisations, for instance as a differential operators, of the underlying Lie algebra. This is also the case for the construction of their related symmetry algebra which take usually the form of a finitely generated quadratic algebra. These algebras often display structure constants which depend on the central elements and in particular on the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we develop a new approach reexamining the case of the generic superintegrable syst…
An Exactly-Solvable (ES) potential on the sphere $S^n$ is reviewed and the related Quasi-Exactly-Solvable (QES) potential is found and studied. Mapping the sphere to a simplex it is found that the metric (of constant curvature) is in polynomial form, and both the ES and the QES potentials are rational functions. Their hidden algebra is $gl_n$ in a finite-dimensional representation realized by first order differential operators acting on $RP^n$. It is shown that variables in the Schrödinger eigenvalue equation can be separated in spherical coordinates and a number of the integrals of the second…
We revise a method by Kalnins, Kress and Miller (2010) for constructing a canonical form for symmetry operators of arbitrary order for the Schrödinger eigenvalue equation $HΨ\equiv (Δ_2 +V)Ψ=EΨ$ on any 2D Riemannian manifold, real or complex, that admits a separation of variables in some orthogonal coordinate system. We apply the method, as an example, to revisit the Tremblay and Winternitz (2010) derivation of the Painlevé VI potential for a 3rd order superintegrable flat space system that separates in polar coordinates and, as new results, we give a listing of the possible potentials on the …
A new integrable generalization to the 2D sphere $S^2$ and to the hyperbolic space $H^2$ of the 2D Euclidean anisotropic oscillator Hamiltonian with Rosochatius (centrifugal) terms is presented, and its curved integral of the motion is shown to be quadratic in the momenta. In order to construct such a new integrable Hamiltonian $H_κ$, we will make use of a group theoretical approach in which the curvature $κ$ of the underlying space will be treated as an additional (contraction) parameter, and we will make extensive use of projective coordinates and their associated phase spaces. It turns out …
A quantum superintegrable model with reflections on the $(n-1)$-sphere is presented. Its symmetry algebra is identified with the higher rank generalization of the Bannai-Ito algebra. It is shown that the Hamiltonian of the system can be constructed from the tensor product of $n$ representations of the superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and that the superintegrability is naturally understood in that setting. The separated solutions are obtained through the Fischer decomposition and a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia extension theorem.
A quantum superintegrable model with reflections on the three-sphere is presented. Its symmetry algebra is identified with the rank-two Bannai-Ito algebra. It is shown that the Hamiltonian of the system can be constructed from the tensor product of four representations of the superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and that the superintegrability is naturally understood in that setting. The exact separated solutions are obtained through the Fischer decomposition and a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia extension theorem.
There are 13 equivalence classes of 2D second order quantum and classical superintegrable systems with nontrivial potential, each associated with a quadratic algebra of hidden symmetries. We study the finite and infinite irreducible representations of the quantum quadratic algebras though the construction of models in which the symmetries act on spaces of functions of a single complex variable via either differential operators or difference operators. In another paper we have already carried out parts of this analysis for the generic nondegenerate superintegrable system on the complex 2-sphere…
Second-order conformal quantum superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions are Laplace equations on a manifold with an added scalar potential and $3$ independent 2nd order conformal symmetry operators. They encode all the information about 2D Helmholtz or time-independent Schrödinger superintegrable systems in an efficient manner: Each of these systems admits a quadratic symmetry algebra (not usually a Lie algebra) and is multiseparable. We study the separation equations for the systems as a family rather than separate cases. We show that the separation equations comprise all of the various types …
The classical Smorodinsky-Winternitz systems on the ND sphere, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces S^N, E^N and H^N are simultaneously approached starting from the Lie algebras so_k(N+1), which include a parametric dependence on the curvature k. General expressions for the Hamiltonian and its integrals of motion are given in terms of intrinsic geodesic coordinate systems. Each Lie algebra generator gives rise to an integral of motion, so that a set of N(N+1)/2 integrals is obtained. Furthermore, 2N-1 functionally independent ones are identified which, in turn, shows that the well known maximal sup…
Superintegrable systems of 2nd order in 3 dimensions with exactly 3-parameter potentials are intriguing objects. Next to the nondegenerate 4-parameter potential systems they admit the maximum number of symmetry operators but their symmetry algebras don't close under commutation and not enough is known about their structure to give a complete classification. Some examples are known for which the 3-parameter system can be extended to a 4th order superintegrable system with a 4-parameter potential and 6 linearly independent symmetry generators. In this paper we use Bôcher contractions of the conf…
Most of this paper is devoted to describing the method. Details will be provided elsewhere. As examples we revisit the Tremblay and Winternitz derivation of the Painlevé VI potential for a 3rd order superintegrable flat space system that separates in polar coordinates and we show …
We consider the differential equation that Zernike proposed to classify aberrations of wavefronts in a circular pupil, whose value at the boundary can be nonzero. On this account the quantum Zernike system, where that differential equation is seen as a Schrödinger equation with a potential, is special in that it has a potential and boundary condition that are not standard in quantum mechanics. We project the disk on a half-sphere and there we find that, in addition to polar coordinates, this system separates in two additional coordinate systems (non-orthogonal on the pupil disk), which lead to…
Recently the authors and J.M. Kress presented a special function recurrence relation method to prove quantum superintegrability of an integrable 2D system that included explicit constructions of higher order symmetries and the structure relations for the closed algebra generated by these symmetries. We applied the method to 5 families of systems, each depending on a rational parameter k, including most notably the caged anisotropic oscillator, the Tremblay, Turbiner and Winternitz system and a deformed Kepler-Coulomb system. Here we work out the analogs of these constructions for all of the as…
Orthogonal polynomials with respect to the hypergeometric distribution on lattices in polyhedral domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$, which include hexagons in ${\mathbb R}^2$ and truncated tetrahedrons in ${\mathbb R}^3$, are defined and studied. The polynomials are given explicitly in terms of the classical one-dimensional Hahn polynomials. They are also characterized as common eigenfunctions of a family of commuting partial difference operators. These operators provide symmetries for a system that can be regarded as a discrete extension of the generic quantum superintegrable system on the $d$-sphere…
Classical (maximal) superintegrable systems in $n$ dimensions are Hamiltonian systems with $2n-1$ independent constants of the motion, globally defined, the maximum number possible. They are very special because they can be solved algebraically. In this paper we show explicitly, mostly through examples of 2nd order superintegrable systems in 2 dimensions, how the trajectories can be determined in detail using rather elementary algebraic, geometric and analytic methods applied to the closed quadratic algebra of symmetries of the system. We treat a family of 2nd order degenerate systems: oscilla…
An integrable generalization on the two-dimensional sphere S^2 and the hyperbolic plane H^2 of the Euclidean anisotropic oscillator Hamiltonian with "centrifugal" terms given by $H=1/2(p_1^2+p_2^2)+ δq_1^2+(δ+ Ω)q_2^2 +\frac{λ_1}{q_1^2}+\frac{λ_2}{q_2^2}$ is presented. The resulting generalized Hamiltonian H_κ depends explicitly on the constant Gaussian curvature κ of the underlying space, in such a way that all the results here presented hold simultaneously for S^2 (κ>0), H^2 (κ<0) and E^2 (κ=0). Moreover, H_κ is explicitly shown to be integrable for any values of the parameters δ, Ω, λ_1 and…
We present the quadratic algebra of the generalized MICZ-Kepler system in three-dimensional Euclidean space $E_{3}$ and its dual the four dimensional singular oscillator in four-dimensional Euclidean space $E_{4}$. We present their realization in terms of a deformed oscillator algebra using the Daskaloyannis construction. The structure constants are in these cases function not only of the Hamiltonian but also of other integrals commuting with all generators of the quadratic algebra. We also present a new algebraic derivation of the energy spectrum of the MICZ-Kepler system on the three sphere …
We give a solution to the long-standing problem of constructing the generators of hidden symmetries of the quantum Higgs oscillator, a particle on a d-sphere moving in a central potential varying as the inverse cosine-squared of the polar angle. This superintegrable system is known to possess a rich algebraic structure, including a hidden SU(d) symmetry that can be deduced from classical conserved quantities and degeneracies of the quantum spectrum. The quantum generators of this SU(d) have not been constructed thus far, except at d=2, and naive quantization of classical conserved quantities l…
