High-energy, carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable, sub-cycle, mid-infrared (mid-IR) pulses can provide unique opportunities of exploring phase-sensitive strong-field light-matter interactions in atoms, molecules, and solids. In the mid-IR wavelength, the ponderomotive energy of laser pulses is dramatically increased (versus the visible/near-infrared) and, therefore, the Keldysh parameter is much smaller than unity even at relatively modest laser intensities. This enables to study the sub-cycle electron dynamics in solids via high-harmonic generation (HHG) without damage. One can also control the electron emissions from nano-devices in the sub-cycle time scale. These efforts are opening a great opportunity towards petahertz electronics. Here, we present a high-energy, sub-cycle pulse synthesizer based on a mid-IR optical parametric amplifier (OPA), pumped by CEP-stable, 2.1 um femtosecond pulses, and its application to HHG in solids. The signal and idler combined spectrum spans from 2.5 to 9.0 um, which covers the whole midwave-infrared (MWIR) region. We coherently synthesize the passively CEP-stable few-cycle signal and idler pulses to generate 33 uJ, 0.88-cycle (12.4 fs), multi-GW pulses centered at ~4.2 um, which is further energy scalable. The in-line synthesis of the CEP-stable sub-cycle pulse is realized through the type-I collinear OPA with minimal temporal walk-off. The MWIR sub-cycle pulse is used for driving HHG in thin silicon samples, producing harmonics up to ~19th order with a continuous spectral coverage due to the isolated emission by the sub-cycle driver. Our demonstration offers an energy scalable and technically simple platform of laser sources generating CEP-stable sub-cycle pulses in the whole MWIR region for investigating isolated phase-sensitive strong-field interactions in solids and gases.
We present a Ho:YLF Chirped-Pulse Amplification (CPA) laser for pumping a longwave infrared Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplifier (OPCPA) at a 1 kHz repetition rate. By utilizing a Ti:Sapphire laser as a frontend, 5-μJ seed pulses at 2051 nm laser pulse are generated in a Dual-Chirp Optical Parametric Amplifier (DC-OPA), which are amplified to 28 mJ pulses with a pulse duration of 6.8 ps. The scheme offers a potential driver for two-color (800 nm and 8 μm) high harmonic generation with an increased keV X-ray photon flux.
A high repetition rate, picosecond THz parametric amplifier (TPA) with a LiNbO3 (LN) crystal has been demonstrated in this work. At 10 kHz repetition rate, a peak power of 200 W and an average power of 12 μW have been obtained over a wide range around 2 THz; at 100 kHz repetition rate, a maximum peak power of 18 W and average power of 10.8 μW have been obtained. The parametric gain of the LN crystal was also investigated and a modified Schwarz-Maier model was introduced to interpret the experimental results.
The ability to amplify optical signals is of pivotal importance across science and technology. The development of optical amplifiers has revolutionized optical communications, which are today pervasively used in virtually all sensing and communication applications of coherent laser sources. In the telecommunication bands, optical amplifiers typically utilize gain media based on III-V semiconductors or rare-earth-doped fibers. Another way to amplify optical signals is to utilize the Kerr nonlinearity of optical fibers or waveguides via parametric processes. Such parametric amplifiers of travell…
We present experimental demonstration and modeling of the optimization of a phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifier by tuning the relative position between the pump- and signal-beam waists along the propagation direction. At the optimum position, the pump beam focuses after the signal beam, and this departure from co-located waists increases with increasing pump power. Such optimization leads to more than 3\,dB improvement in the measured de-amplification response of the amplifier.
Time Shaping of ultrashort visible pulses has been performed using a specially designed Acousto-Optic Programmable Dispersive Filter of 50% efficiency at the output of a two-stage noncollinear optical parametric amplifier. The set-up is compact and reliable. It provides a tunable shaped source in the visible with unique features: 4 ps shaping window with preserved tunability over 500-650 nm, and pulses as short as 30 fs. Several $μ$J output energy is easily obtained.
We demonstrate for the first time a mid infrared silicon Raman amplifier. Amplification of 12 dB is reported for a signal at 3.39 micron wavelength. The active medium was a 2.5 cm long silicon sample that was pumped with 5ns pulses at 2.88 micron. The absence of the nonlinear losses which severely limit the performance of silicon Raman devices in the near infrared combined with unsurpassed crystal quality, high thermal conductivity render silicon a very attractive Raman medium. Such a technology can potentially extend silicon photonics application beyond data communication in the near infrared…
We develop from first principles the coupled wave equations that describe polarization-sensitive parametric amplification based on four-wave mixing in standard (randomly birefringent) optical fibers. We show that in the small-signal case these equations can be solved analytically, and permit us to predict the gain experienced by the signal beam as well as its state of polarization (SOP) at the fiber output. We find that, independently of its initial value, the output SOP of a signal within the parametric gain bandwidth is solely determined by the pump SOP. We call this effect of pulling the po…
We report a multi-microjoule, ultra-broadband mid-infrared optical parametric amplifier based on a GaSe nonlinear crystal pumped at ~2 μm. The generated idler pulse has a flat spectrum spanning from 4.5 to 13.3 μm at -3 dB and 4.2 to 16 μm in the full spectral range, with a central wavelength of 8.8 μm. The proposed scheme supports a sub-cycle Fourier-transform-limited pulse width. A (2+1)-dimensional numerical simulation is employed to reproduce the obtained idler spectrum. To our best knowledge, this is the broadest -3 dB spectrum ever obtained by optical parametric amplifiers in this spectr…
We describe the process of parametric amplification in a directional coupler of quadratically nonlinear and lossy waveguides, which belong to a class of optical systems with spatial parity-time (PT) symmetry in the linear regime. We identify a distinct spectral parity-time anti-symmetry associated with optical parametric interactions, and show that pump-controlled symmetry breaking can facilitate spectrally selective mode amplification in analogy with PT lasers. We also establish a connection between breaking of spectral and spatial mode symmetries, revealing the potential to implement unconve…
Compact, power efficient and fiber compatible lasers, wavelength converters and amplifiers are vital ingredients for the future fiber optic systems and networks. Nonlinear optical effects, like Raman scattering and parametric four wave mixing, offer a way to realize such devices. Here we use a single chalcogenide microwire to realize a device that provides the functions of a Stokes Raman parametric laser, a four wave mixing anti Stokes wavelength converter, and an ultra broadband Stokes/anti Stokes Raman amplifier or supercontinuum generator. The device operation relies on ultrahigh Raman and …

We report on a μJ-scale mid-infrared optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based on the recently developed wide-bandgap orthorhombic crystal, BaGa4S7 (BGS), and directly compare its performance to that of LiGaS2 (LGS) in the same OPA setup. The source is based on a single OPA stage amplifying supercontinuum seed pulses with a quantum efficiency of 29{\%} at an idler wavelength of 10 μm, featuring nominally carrier-envelope phase-stable pulses. As a result of pumping the OPA directly at 1 μm, the overall conversion efficiency far exceeds that of traditional schemes based on OPA's followed by diffe…
We outline an approach for improving the temporal contrast of a high-intensity laser system by $>$8 orders of magnitude using non-collinear sum-frequency generation with the signal and idler of an optical parametric amplifier. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique by cleaning pulses from a millijoule-level chirped-pulse amplification system to provide $>$10$^{12}$ intensity contrast relative to all pre-pulses and amplified spontaneous emission $>$5~ps prior to the main pulse. The output maintains percent-level energy stability on the time scales of a typical user experiment at our…
We analytically find an approximate Bloch-Messiah reduction of a noncollinear parametric amplifier pumped with a focused monochromatic beam. We consider type I phase matching. The results are obtained using a perturbative expansion and scaled to a high gain regime. They allow a straightforward maximization of the signal gain and minimization of the parametric fluorescence noise. We find the fundamental mode of the amplifier, which is an elliptic Gaussian defining the optimal seed beam shape. We conclude that the output of the amplifier should be stripped of higher order modes, which are approx…
Spatially localized and periodic field patterns in periodically modulated optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators are studied. In the degenerate case (equal signal and idler beams) we elaborate the systematic method of construction of the stationary localized modes in the amplifiers, study their properties and stability. We describe a method of constructing periodic solutions in optical parametric oscillators, by adjusting the form of the external driven field to the given form of either signal or pump beams.
We present a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) developed for strong-field attosecond physics and soft-X-ray transient absorption experiments. The system relies on noncollinear potassium titanyl arsenate (KTA) booster OPCPAs and is pumped by a 240 W, 1.1 ps Yb:YAG Innoslab chirped pulse laser amplifier. Two optically synchronized infrared output beams are simultaneously available: a 430 μJ, 51 fs, carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable beam at 1.55 μm and an angular-dispersion-compensated, 125 μJ, 73 fs beam at 3.1 μm.
The dispersive properties of non-degenerate optical parametric amplification in quasi-phase-matched (QPM) nonlinear quadratic crystals with an arbitrary grating profile are theoretically investigated in the no-pump-depletion limit. The spectral group delay curve of the amplifier is shown to be univocally determined by its spectral power gain curve through a Hilbert transform. Such a constraint has important implications on the propagation of spectrally-narrow optical pulses through the amplifier. In particular, it is shown that anomalous transit times, corresponding to superluminal or even neg…
In this paper we discuss the bandwidth enhancement that can be achieved in multi-Joule optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) systems exploiting the tunability of parametric amplification. In particular, we consider a pair of single pass amplifiers based on potassium dideuterium phosphate (DKDP), pumped by the second harmonic of Nd:glass and tuned to amplify adjacent regions of the signal spectrum. We demonstrate that a bandwidth enhancement up to 50% is possible in two configurations; in the first case, one of the two amplifiers is operated near its non-collinear broadband lim…
In this article, we demonstrate a scheme capable of two-phase measurement, i.e. the simultaneous measurement of the two phase-shifts occurring in two independent Mach-Zehnder interferometers using one intensity detector. Our scheme utilizes dark-state-enhanced coupled parametric amplifiers in an atomic medium to mix the multiple fields probing the various arms of the interferometers in parallel. The two phase-differences are then encoded in separate continuous-variable parameters in the spectral waveform of the parametrically amplified atom-radiated signal field, which can be directly decouple…
Coherent, purely-dispersive three-wave mixing systems in optics and superconducting microwave circuits can be operated as parametric amplifiers, generating from a pump wave at one frequency amplified signal and idler waves at lower frequencies. Here we demonstrate the reciprocal process using a Josephson amplifier in which coherently imposed signal and idler beams up-convert to the pump frequency. For signal and idler beams strong enough to significantly deplete the pump, we show that this reciprocal process ("coherent cancellation") leads to large, phase-sensitive modulation and even enhancem…
Milligram-scale resonators have been shown to be suitable for the creation of 3-mode optoacoustic parametric amplifiers, based on a phenomena first predicted for advanced gravitational-wave detectors. To achieve practical optoacoustic parametric amplification, high quality factor resonators are required. We present millimetre-scale silicon resonators designed to exhibit a torsional vibration mode with a frequency in the 10^5 - 10^6 Hz range, for observation of 3-mode optoacoustic interactions in a compact table-top system. Our design incorporates an isolation stage and minimizes the acoustic l…
We report parametric gain by utilizing $ χ^{(2)} $ non-linearities in a semiconductor Bragg Reflection Waveguide (BRW) waveguide chip. Under the two-mode degenerate type II phase matching, it can be shown that more than 18 dBs of parametric gain for both TE and TM modes is tenable in 100s of micrometers of device length. Polarization insensitive parametric gain can be attained within the 1550 nm region of the spectrum. These AlGaAs BRW waveguides exhibit sub-photon per pulse sensitivity. This is in sharp contrast to other types of parametric gain devices which utilize $ χ^{(3)} $, where the pu…
We investigate the effect of a degenerate optical parametric amplifier (OPA) placed inside an optomechanical cavity on the steady-state entanglement of two cavity modes, which jointly interact with a mechanical resonator. Two cavity modes are respectively driven at the red and blue sideband associated with the mechanical resonator, which generates entanglement between them in the limit of resolved sideband. The OPA gives rise to single-mode squeezing of the cavity fields, which results in significant improvement of the two-mode entanglement. It is found that an optimal nonlinear gain of the OP…
