Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a knot with a fixed positive crossing and $\mathcal{L}_n$ the link obtained by replacing this crossing with $n$ positive twists. We prove that the knot Floer homology $\widehat{\text{HFK}}(\mathcal{L}_n)$ `stabilizes' as $n$ goes to infinity. This categorifies a similar stabilization phenomenon of the Alexander polynomial. As an application, we construct an infinite family of prime, positive mutant knots with isomorphic bigraded knot Floer homology groups. Moreover, given any pair of positive mutants, we describe how to derive a corresponding infinite family positive mutants with isomorphic bigraded $\widehat{\text{HFK}}$ groups, Seifert genera, and concordance invariant $τ$.
Khovanov-Floer theories are a class of homological link invariants which admit spectral sequences from Khovanov homology. They include Khovanov homology, Szab{ó}'s geometric link homology, singular instanton homology, and various Floer theories applied to branched double covers. In this short note we show that certain strong Khovanov-Floer theories, including Szab{ó} homology and singular instanton homology, are invariant under Conway mutation. This confirms conjectures of Seed and Lambert-Cole. Along the way we prove two other conjectures about the structure of Szab{ó} homology.
Given a self-diffeomorphism h of a closed, orientable surface S and an embedding f of S into a three-manifold M, we construct a mutant manifold N by cutting M along f(S) and regluing by h. We will consider whether there are any gluings such that for any embedding, the manifold and its mutant have isomorphic Heegaard Floer homology. In particular, we will demonstrate that if the gluing is not isotopic to the identity, then there exists an embedding of S into a three-manifold M such that the rank of the non-torsion summands of the Heegaard Floer homology of M differs from that of its mutant. We …
We utilize the Ozsvath-Szabo contact invariant to detect the action of involutions on certain homology spheres that are surgeries on symmetric links, generalizing a previous result of Akbulut and Durusoy. Potentially this may be useful to detect different smooth structures on 4-manifolds by cork twisting operation.
In an earlier paper, we introduced a collection of graded Abelian groups $\HFKa(Y,K)$ associated to knots in a three-manifold. The aim of the present paper is to investigate these groups for several specific families of knots, including the Kinoshita-Terasaka knots and their ``Conway mutants''. These results show that $\HFKa$ contains more information than the Alexander polynomial and the signature of these knots; and they also illustrate the fact that $\HFKa$ detects mutation. We also calculate $\HFKa$ for certain pretzel knots, and knots with small crossing number ($n\leq 9$). Our calculatio…
We give a new, elementary proof that Khovanov homology with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$--coefficients is invariant under Conway mutation. This proof also gives a strategy to prove Baldwin and Levine's conjecture that $δ$--graded knot Floer homology is mutation--invariant. Using the Clifford module structure on $\widetilde{\text{HFK}}$ induced by basepoint maps, we carry out this strategy for mutations on a large class of tangles. Let $L'$ be a link obtained from $L$ by mutating the tangle $T$. Suppose some rational closure of $T$ corresponding to the mutation is the unlink on any number of compon…
We use bordered Floer theory to study properties of twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots $Q_{n}(K)$. We prove that $Q_n(K)$ is not Floer homologically thin, with two exceptions. We calculate the 3-genus of $Q_{n}(K)$ in terms of the twisting parameter $n$ and the 3-genus of the companion $K$, and we determine when $Q_n(K)$ is fibered. As an application to our results on Floer thickness and 3-genus, we verify the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for many of these satellite knots.
Quasi-alternating links are homologically thin for both Khovanov homology and knot Floer homology. We show that every quasi-alternating link gives rise to an infinite family of quasi-alternating links obtained by replacing a crossing with an alternating rational tangle. Consequently, we show that many pretzel links are quasi-alternating, and we determine the thickness of Khovanov homology for "most" pretzel links with arbitrarily many strands.
We use bordered Heegaard Floer homology to compute the tau invariant of a family of satellite knots obtained via twisted infection along two components of the Borromean rings, a generalization of Whitehead doubling. We show that tau of the resulting knot depends only on the two twisting parameters and the values of tau for the two companion knots. We also include some notes on bordered Heegaard Floer homology that may serve as a useful introduction to the subject.
We define a link homology theory that is readily seen to be both isomorphic to reduced odd Khovanov homology and fully determined by data impervious to Conway mutation. This gives an elementary proof that odd Khovanov homology is mutation invariant, and therefore that mod 2 Khovanov homology is mutation invariant. We also establish mutation invariance for the entire Ozsvath-Szabo spectral sequence from reduced Khovanov homology to the Heegaard Floer homology of the branched double cover.
We exhibit an infinite family of knots with isomorphic knot Heegaard Floer homology. Each knot in this infinite family admits a nontrivial genus two mutant which shares the same total dimension in both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology. Each knot is distinguished from its genus two mutant by both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology as bigraded groups. Additionally, for both knot Heegaard Floer homology and Khovanov homology, the genus two mutation interchanges the groups in $δ$-gradings $k$ and $-k$.
We define a twisted version of Manolescu and Woodward's Symplectic Instanton homology, prove that this invariant fits into the framework of Wehrheim and Woodward's Floer Field theory, and describe its behaviour for connected sum and Dehn surgery.
This is a companion paper to earlier work of the authors, which interprets the Heegaard Floer homology for a manifold with torus boundary in terms of immersed curves in a punctured torus. We prove a variety of properties of this invariant, paying particular attention to its relation to knot Floer homology, the Thurston norm, and the Turaev torsion. We also give a geometric description of the gradings package from bordered Heegaard Floer homology and establish a symmetry under spin$^c$ conjugation; this symmetry gives rise to genus one mutation invariance in Heegaard Floer homology for closed t…
A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L-space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L-space, i.e. a rational homology 3-sphere with the smallest possible Heegaard Floer homology. Given a knot K, take an unknotted circle c and twist K n times along c to obtain a twist family { K_n }. We give a sufficient condition for { K_n } to contain infinitely many L-space knots. As an application we show that for each torus knot and each hyperbolic Berge knot K, we can take c so that the twist family { K_n } contains infinitely many hyperbolic L-space knots. We also demonstrate that there i…
This note contains two remarks about the application of the d-invariant in Heegaard Floer homology and Donaldson's diagonalization theorem to knot theory. The first is the equivalence of two obstructions they give to a 2-bridge knot being smoothly slice. The second carries out a suggestion by Stefan Friedl to replace the use of Heegaard Floer homology by Donaldson's theorem in the proof of the main result of Invent. Math. 192 (2013) no.3 717-750 concerning Conway mutation of alternating links.
Conjecturally, there are only finitely many Heegaard Floer L-space knots in $S^3$ of a given genus. We examine this conjecture for twist families of knots $\{K_n\}$ obtained by twisting a knot $K$ in $S^3$ along an unknot $c$ in terms of the linking number $ω$ between $K$ and $c$. We establish the conjecture in case of $|ω| \neq 1$, prove that $\{K_n\}$ contains at most three L-space knots if $ω= 0$, and address the case where $|ω| = 1$ under an additional hypothesis about Seifert surgeries. To that end, we characterize a twisting circle $c$ for which $\{ (K_n, r_n) \}$ contains at least ten S…
The purpose of this thesis is to define a "local" version of Ozsváth and Szabó's Heegaard Floer homology $\operatorname{\widehat{HFL}}$ for links in the 3-dimensional sphere, i.e. a Heegaard Floer homology $\operatorname{\widehat{HFT}}$ for tangles in the closed 3-ball. After studying basic properties of $\operatorname{\widehat{HFT}}$ and its decategorified tangle invariant $\nabla_T^s$, we prove a glueing theorem in terms of Zarev's bordered sutured Floer homology, which endows $\operatorname{\widehat{HFT}}$ with an additional glueing structure. For 4-ended tangles, we repackage this glueing …
Area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-disc can be regarded as time-1 maps of (non-autonomous) Hamiltonian flows on solid tori, periodic flow-lines of which define braid (conjugacy) classes, up to full twists. We examine the dynamics relative to such braid classes and define a braid Floer homology. This refinement of the Floer homology originally used for the Arnol'd Conjecture yields a Morse-type forcing theory for periodic points of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-disc based on braiding. Contributions of this paper include (1) a monotonicity lemma for the behavior of the nonlinear C…
Mutation is an operation on 3-manifolds containing an embedded surface of genus 2. It is defined by cutting along the surface and regluing using the `hyperelliptic' involution, and is known to preserve many 3-manifold invariants. I show that mutation of a homology 3-sphere preserves its (instanton) Floer homology, and that a related operation on 4-manifolds preserves the Donaldson invariants. A companion article (in preparation) will treat invariants based on the Seiberg-Witten equations.
Genus 2 mutation is the process of cutting a 3-manifold along an embedded closed genus 2 surface, twisting by the hyper-elliptic involution, and gluing back. This paper compares genus 2 mutation with the better-known Conway mutation in the context of knots in the 3-sphere. Despite the fact that any Conway mutation can be achieved by a sequence of at most two genus 2 mutations, the invariants that are preserved by genus 2 mutation are a proper subset of those preserved by Conway mutation. In particular, while the Alexander and Jones polynomials are preserved by genus 2 mutation, the HOMFLY-PT p…
To a link L in the 3-sphere, we associate a spectral sequence whose E^2 page is the reduced Khovanov homology of L and which converges to a version of the monopole Floer homology of the branched double cover. The pages E^k for k > 1 depend only on the mutation equivalence class of L. We define a mod 2 grading on the spectral sequence which interpolates between the delta-grading on Khovanov homology and the mod 2 grading on Floer homology. We also derive a new formula for link signature that is well-adapted to Khovanov homology. More generally, we construct new bigraded invariants of a framed l…
We define two concordance invariants of knots using framed instanton homology. These invariants $ν^\sharp$ and $τ^\sharp$ provide bounds on slice genus and maximum self-linking number, and the latter is a concordance homomorphism which agrees in all known cases with the $τ$ invariant in Heegaard Floer homology. We use $ν^\sharp$ and $τ^\sharp$ to compute the framed instanton homology of all nonzero rational Dehn surgeries on: 20 of the 35 nontrivial prime knots through 8 crossings, infinite families of twist and pretzel knots, and instanton L-space knots; and of 19 of the first 20 closed hyper…
