This paper describes a novel projection algorithm, the Projection Onto Span Algorithm (POSA) for wavelet-based superresolution and removing speckle (in wavelet domain) of unknown variance from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Although the POSA is good as a new superresolution algorithm for image enhancement, image metrology and biometric identification, here one will use it like a tool of despeckling, being the first time that an algorithm of super-resolution is used for despeckling of SAR images. Specifically, the speckled SAR image is decomposed into wavelet subbands, POSA is applied to the high subbands, and reconstruct a SAR image from the modified detail coefficients. Experimental results demonstrate that the new method compares favorably to several other despeckling methods on test SAR images.
Speckle reduction is a longstanding topic in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Many different schemes have been proposed for the restoration of intensity SAR images. Among the different possible approaches, methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently shown to reach state-of-the-art performance for SAR image restoration. CNN training requires good training data: many pairs of speckle-free / speckle-corrupted images. This is an issue in SAR applications, given the inherent scarcity of speckle-free images. To handle this problem, this paper analyzes different strategi…

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images contain a huge amount of information, however, the number of practical use-cases is limited due to the presence of speckle noise in them. In recent years, deep learning based techniques have brought significant improvement in the domain of denoising and image restoration. However, further research has been hampered by the lack of availability of data suitable for training deep neural network based systems. With this paper, we propose a standard way of generating synthetic data for the training of speckle reduction algorithms and demonstrate a use-case to a…

In Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, despeckling is very important for image analysis, whereas speckle is known as a kind of multiplicative noise caused by the coherent imaging system. During the past three decades, various algorithms have been proposed to denoise the SAR image. Generally, the BM3D is considered as the state of art technique to despeckle the speckle noise with excellent performance. More recently, deep learning make a success in image denoising and achieved a improvement over conventional method where large train dataset is required. Unlike most of the images SAR image de…

This paper presents a technique for reducing speckle in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) imagery using Nonlocal Means and a statistical test based on stochastic divergences. The main objective is to select homogeneous pixels in the filtering area through statistical tests between distributions. This proposal uses the complex Wishart model to describe PolSAR data, but the technique can be extended to other models. The weights of the location-variant linear filter are function of the p-values of tests which verify the hypothesis that two samples come from the same distribution and,…

Speckle fluctuations seriously limit the interpretability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Speckle reduction has thus been the subject of numerous works spanning at least four decades. Techniques based on deep neural networks have recently achieved a new level of performance in terms of SAR image restoration quality. Beyond the design of suitable network architectures or the selection of adequate loss functions, the construction of training sets is of uttermost importance. So far, most approaches have considered a supervised training strategy: the networks are trained to produce outpu…
Deep learning (DL) in remote sensing has nowadays become an effective operative tool: it is largely used in applications such as change detection, image restoration, segmentation, detection and classification. With reference to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) domain the application of DL techniques is not straightforward due to non trivial interpretation of SAR images, specially caused by the presence of speckle. Several deep learning solutions for SAR despeckling have been proposed in the last few years. Most of these solutions focus on the definition of different network architectures with si…

Speckle reduction is a prerequisite for many image processing tasks in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, as well as all coherent images. In recent years, predominant state-of-the-art approaches for despeckling are usually based on nonlocal methods which mainly concentrate on achieving utmost image restoration quality, with relatively low computational efficiency. Therefore, in this study we aim to propose an efficient despeckling model with both high computational efficiency and high recovery quality. To this end, we exploit a newly-developed trainable nonlinear reaction diffusion(TNRD) f…

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery to monitor oil spills are some methods that have been proposed for the West African sub-region. With the increase in the number of oil exploration companies in Ghana (and her neighbors) and the rise in the coastal activities in the sub-region, there is the need for proper monitoring of the environmental impact of these socio-economic activities on the environment. Detection and near real-time information about oil spills are fundamental in reducing oil spill environmental impact. SAR images are prone to some noise, which is predominantly speckle noise aro…
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are often contaminated by a multiplicative noise known as speckle. Speckle makes the processing and interpretation of SAR images difficult. We propose a deep learning-based approach called, Image Despeckling Convolutional Neural Network (ID-CNN), for automatically removing speckle from the input noisy images. In particular, ID-CNN uses a set of convolutional layers along with batch normalization and rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function and a component-wise division residual layer to estimate speckle and it is trained in an end-to-end fashion us…
This work deals with unsupervised image deblurring. We present a new deblurring procedure on images provided by low-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) or simply by multimedia in presence of multiplicative (speckle) or additive noise, respectively. The method we propose is defined as a two-step process. First, we use an original technique for noise reduction in wavelet domain. Then, the learning of a Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) is performed directly on the denoised image to take out it the blur. This technique has been successfully applied to real SAR images, and the simulation res…

In this letter, we aim to address a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) despeckling problem with the necessity of neither clean (speckle-free) SAR images nor independent speckled image pairs from the same scene, and a practical solution for SAR despeckling (PSD) is proposed. First, an adversarial learning framework is designed to generate speckled-to-speckled (S2S) image pairs from the same scene in the situation where only single speckled SAR images are available. Then, the S2S SAR image pairs are employed to train a modified despeckling Nested-UNet model using the Noise2Noise (N2N) strategy. More…
In SAR domain many application like classification, detection and segmentation are impaired by speckle. Hence, despeckling of SAR images is the key for scene understanding. Usually despeckling filters face the trade-off of speckle suppression and information preservation. In the last years deep learning solutions for speckle reduction have been proposed. One the biggest issue for these methods is how to train a network given the lack of a reference. In this work we proposed a convolutional neural network based solution trained on simulated data. Speckle noise, inherent in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, degrades the performance of the various SAR image analysis tasks. Thus, speckle noise reduction is a critical preprocessing step for smoothing homogeneous regions while preserving details. This letter proposes a variational despeckling approach where L1-norm total variation regularization term is approximated in a quadratic and linear manner to increase accuracy while decreasing the computation time. Despeckling performance and computational efficiency of the proposed method are shown using synthetic and real-world SAR images.

Deep learning approaches show unprecedented results for speckle reduction in SAR amplitude images. The wide availability of multi-temporal stacks of SAR images can improve even further the quality of denoising. In this paper, we propose a flexible yet efficient way to integrate temporal information into a deep neural network for speckle suppression. Archives provide access to long time-series of SAR images, from which multi-temporal averages can be computed with virtually no remaining speckle fluctuations. The proposed method combines this multi-temporal average and the image at a given date i…
Information extraction from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is heavily impaired by speckle noise, hence despeckling is a crucial preliminary step in scene analysis algorithms. The recent success of deep learning envisions a new generation of despeckling techniques that could outperform classical model-based methods. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are subject to prominent speckle noise, which is generally considered a purely multiplicative noise process. In theory, this multiplicative noise is that the ratio of the standard deviation to the signal value, the "coefficient of variation," is theoretically constant at every point in a SAR image. Most of the filters for speckle reduction are based on this property. Such property is irrelevant for the new filter structure, which is based on directional smoothing (DS) theory, the enhanced directional smoothing (EDS) that removes speckle noise from SAR imag…
The segmentation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is a longstanding yet challenging task, not only because of the presence of speckle, but also due to the variations of surface backscattering properties in the images. Tremendous investigations have been made to eliminate the speckle effects for the segmentation of SAR images, while few work devotes to dealing with the variations of backscattering coefficients in the images. In order to overcome both the two difficulties, this paper presents a novel SAR image segmentation method by exploiting a multi-scale active contour model based on …

Speckle reduction is a key step in many remote sensing applications. By strongly affecting synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, it makes them difficult to analyse. Due to the difficulty to model the spatial correlation of speckle, a deep learning algorithm with self-supervision is proposed in this paper: SAR2SAR. Multi-temporal time series are leveraged and the neural network learns to restore SAR images by only looking at noisy acquisitions. To this purpose, the recently proposed noise2noise framework has been employed. The strategy to adapt it to SAR despeckling is presented, based on a co…

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) despeckling is an important problem in remote sensing as speckle degrades SAR images, affecting downstream tasks like detection and segmentation. Recent studies show that convolutional neural networks(CNNs) outperform classical despeckling methods. Traditional CNNs try to increase the receptive field size as the network goes deeper, thus extracting global features. However, speckle is relatively small, and increasing receptive field does not help in extracting speckle features. This study employs an overcomplete CNN architecture to focus on learning low-level feat…

Stack filters are a special case of non-linear filters. They have a good performance for filtering images with different types of noise while preserving edges and details. A stack filter decomposes an input image into stacks of binary images according to a set of thresholds. Each binary image is then filtered by a Boolean function, which characterizes the filter. Adaptive stack filters can be computed by training using a prototype (ideal) image and its corrupted version, leading to optimized filters with respect to a loss function. In this work we propose the use of training with selected samp…

In the proposed method, spatial context is considered in constructing constraint pairs, each of which consists of…
The wavelet shrinkage denoising approach is able to maintain local regularity of a signal while suppressing noise. However, the conventional wavelet shrinkage based methods are not time-scale adaptive to track the local time-scale variation. In this paper we investigate the use of discriminative model learning through Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for SAR image despeckling. The network uses a residual learning strategy, hence it does not recover the filtered image, but the speckle component, which is then subtracted from the noisy one. Training is carried out by considering a large multitemporal SAR image and its multilook version, in order to approximate a clean image. Experimental results, both on synthetic and real SAR data, show the method to achieve better performance with respect to state-of-the-art techniques.

To avoid injecting optical-domain information into the filtered image, a SAR-domain statistical test is preliminarily performed to reject right away any risky predictor. Experiments on two SAR-optical datasets prove the pro…
