By analyzing the optical tomogram of a linear superposition of coherent states, we show that distinctive signatures of the macroscopic superposition states are displayed directly in the optical tomograms of the states. We also study the effect of decoherence on the optical tomograms of the macroscopic superposition states. Since the wave packet fractional revivals are associated with the generation of macroscopic superposition states, these signatures help in visualizing the revivals and fractional revivals occurring in a nonlinear medium directly in the optical tomogram of the time-evolved state. We found that the optical tomogram of the time-evolved state at the instants of fractional revivals show structures with sinusoidal strands. Using a class of initial superposed wave packets evolving in the Kerr-like medium, we further show that the condition for the occurrence of fractional revival phenomenon depends on the number of wave packets composing the initial superposition state. In the case of a two-mode electromagnetic field, we investigate the entanglement of the state directly using the optical tomogram. We have shown that the signatures of entanglement can be observed directly in the single-mode optical tomogram of the state without reconstructing the density matrix of the system. We also analyze the effect of decoherence on the optical tomograms of the entangled states. Further, we examine the optical tomograms of the entangled states generated using a beam splitter with a Kerr medium placed into one of its input modes. We have found the signatures of entanglement in the optical tomogram for the entangled states generated at the instants of two- and three-subpacket fractional revival times.
The thesis showcases the importance of tomograms in quantifying nonclassical effects such as wavepacket revivals, squeezing, and quantum entanglement in continuous-variable, hybrid quantum, and qubit systems. This approach avoids error-prone statistical methods used in state reconstruction procedures. The performance of many bipartite entanglement indicators obtained directly from tomograms is examined both in the case of known quantum states and experimental data reported in the literature.
Several nonclassical effects displayed by wave packets subject to generic nonlinear Hamiltonians can be identified and assessed directly from tomograms without attempting to reconstruct the Wigner function or the density matrix explicitly. We have demonstrated this for both single-mode and bipartite systems. We have shown that a wide spectrum of effects such as the revival phenomena, quadrature squeezing and Hong-Mandel and Hillery type higher-order squeezing in both the single-mode system and the double-well Bose-Einstein condensate can be obtained from appropriate tomograms in a straightforw…
We propose a legitimate and easily computable nonclassicality indicator for the states of electromagnetic fields based on the standard deviation in the measurement of the homodyne rotated quadrature operator. The proposed nonclassicality indicator is the nonclassical area projected by the optical tomogram of the quantum state of light on the optical tomographic plane. If the nonclassical area projected by the optical tomogram of a quantum state is greater than zero, the state is nonclassical, and the area is zero for the pure classical state. It is also noted that the nonclassical area of a qu…

Quantum state reconstruction for continuous-variable systems such as the radiation field poses challenges which arise primarily from the large dimensionality of the Hilbert space. Many proposals for state reconstruction exist, ranging from standard reconstruction protocols to applications of machine learning. No universally applicable protocol exists, however, for extracting the Wigner function from the optical tomogram of an arbitrary state of light. We establish that nonclassical effects such as entanglement changes during dynamical evolution and the onset of quantum synchronization are mirr…
Tomograms are obtained as probability distributions and are used to reconstruct a quantum state from experimentally measured values. We study the evolution of tomograms for different quantum systems, both finite and infinite dimensional. In realistic experimental conditions, the quantum states are exposed to the ambient environment and hence subject to effects like decoherence and dissipation, which are dealt with here, consistently, using the formalism of open quantum systems. This is extremely relevant from the perspective of experimental implementation and issues related to state reconstruc…
We have examined both single and entangled two-mode multiphoton coherent states and shown how the `Janus-faced' properties between two partner states are mirrored in appropriate tomograms. Entropic squeezing, quadrature squeezing and higher-order squeezing properties for a wide range of nonclassical states are estimated directly from tomograms. We have demonstrated how squeezing properties of two-mode entangled states produced at the output port of a quantum beamsplitter are sensitive to the relative phase between the reflected and transmitted fields. This feature allows for the possibility of…
The von Neumann evolution equation for density matrix and the Moyal equation for the Wigner function are mapped onto evolution equation for optical tomogram of quantum state. The connection with known evolution equation for symplectic tomogram of the quantum state is clarified. The stationary states corresponding to quantum energy levels are associated with the probability representation of the von Neumann and Moyal equations written for the optical tomograms. Classical Liouville equation for optical tomogram is obtained. Example of parametric oscillator is considered in detail.
A review of probability representation of quantum states in given for optical and photon number tomography approaches. Explicit connection of photon number tomogram with measurable by homodyne detector optical tomogram is obtained. New integral relations connecting Hermite polynomials of two variables with Laguerre polynomials are found. Examples of generic Gaussian photon states (squeezed and correlated states) are studied in detail.
We theoretically study the optical tomography of the time evolved states generated by the evolution of different kinds of initial wave packets in a Kerr medium. Exact analytical expression for the optical tomogram of the quantum state at any instant during the evolution of a generic initial wave packet is derived in terms of Hermite polynomials. Time evolution of the optical tomogram is discussed for three kinds of initial states: a coherent state, an $m$-photon-added coherent state, and even and odd coherent states. We show the manifestation of revival and fractional revivals in the optical t…
We have investigated a wide range of nonclassical behavior exhibited by a tripartite cavity optomechanical system comprising a two-level atom placed inside a Fabry-Pérot type optical cavity with a vibrating mirror attached to one end. We have shown that the atom's subsystem von Neumann entropy collapses to its maximum allowed value over a significant time interval during dynamical evolution. This feature is sensitive to the nature of the initial state, the specific form of intensity-dependent tripartite coupling, and system parameters. The extent of nonclassicality of the field is assessed thr…
We theoretically study the optical tomography of maximally entangled states generated at the output modes of a beam splitter. We consider even and odd coherent states in one of the input modes and vacuum state in the other input mode of the beam splitter. We have shown that the signatures of entanglement can be observed directly in the optical tomogram of the state, without reconstructing the density matrix of the system. Two distinct types of optical tomograms are observed in any one of the output modes of the beam splitter based on the quadrature measurement in the other output mode if the o…
Higher-order nonclassical properties of r photon added and t photon subtracted qudit states (referred to as rPAQS and tPSQS, respectively) are investigated here to answer: How addition and subtraction of photon can be used engineer higher-order nonclassical properties of qudit states? To obtain the answer higher-order moment of relevant bosonic field operators are first obtained for rPAQS and tPSQS, and subsequently the same is used to study the higher-order nonclassical properties of the corresponding states. A few witnesses of higher-order nonclassicality (e.g. Higher-Order Antibunching, Hig…
Nonclassical states, having no classical analogue, promise advantage in the performance in several fields of technology, such as computation, communication, sensing. This led to an escalated interest in the recent years for the generation and characterization of nonclassical states in various physical systems of interest. Keeping this in mind, we examined generation of various lower- and higher-order nonclassical states in both codirectional and contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical couplers operating under second harmonic generation with the help of moments-based criteria. Using anot…
The experimental check of two--mode Robertson uncertainty relations and inequalities for highest quadrature moments is suggested by using homodyne photon detection. The relation between optical tomograms and symplectic tomograms is used to connect the tomographic dispersion matrix and the quadrature components dispersion matrix of the two--mode field states.
We consider optical tomography of photon Fock state superpositions in connection with recent experimental achievements. The emphasis is put on the fact that it suffices to represent the measured tomogram as a main result of the experiment. We suggest a test for checking the correctness of experimental data. Explicit expressions for optical tomograms of Fock state superpositions are given in terms of Hermite polynomials. Particular cases of vacuum and low photon-number state superposition are considered as well as influence of thermal noise on state purity is studied.
In this letter, we define the homodyne $q$-deformed quadrature operator. Analytic expression for the wavefunctions of $q$-deformed oscillator in the quadrature basis are found. Furthermore, we compute the explicit analytical expression for the tomogram of the $q$-deformed coherent states by finding the eigenstates of the $q$-deformed quadrature operator.
Distinguishing quantum states that admit a classical counterpart from those that exhibit nonclassicality has long been a central issue in quantum optics. Finding an implementable criterion certifying optical nonclassicality (i.e, the incompatibility with a statistical mixture of coherent states) is of major importance as it often is a prerequisite to quantum information processes. A hierarchy of conditions for detecting whether a quantum state exhibits optical nonclassicality can be written based on some matrices of moments of the optical field [Phys. Rev. A 72, 043808 (2005)]. Here, we design…
We present the results of an operational use of experimentally measured optical tomograms to determine state characteristics (purity) avoiding any reconstruction of quasiprobabilities. We also develop a natural way how to estimate the errors (including both statistical and systematic ones) by an analysis of the experimental data themselves. Precision of the experiment can be increased by postselecting the data with minimal (systematic) errors. We demonstrate those techniques by considering coherent and photon-added coherent states measured via the time-domain improved homodyne detection. The o…
We demonstrate, theoretically and experimentally, that statistical mixtures of the vacuum state |0> and the single-photon Fock state |1> are nonclassical according to the Vogel criterion (W. Vogel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1849 (2000)), regardless of the vacuum fraction. The ensembles are synthesized via conditional measurements on biphotons generated by means of parametric downconversion, and their quadrature statistics are measured using balanced homodyne detection. A comparative review of various quantum state nonclassicality criteria is presented.
In quantum optics a pure state is considered classical, relative to the statistics of photodetection, if and only if it is a coherent state. A different and newer notion of nonclassicality is based on modal entanglement. One example that relates these two notions is the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect, where modal entanglement is generated by a beamsplitter from the nonclassical photon-number state. This suggests that beamsplitters or, more generally, linear-optical networks are mediators of the two notions of nonclassicality. In this Brief Report, we show the following: Given a nonclassical pure-produc…
We investigate the nonclassical properties of output fields propagated through a contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler consisting of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear (quadratic) waveguide operated by second harmonic generation. In contrast to the earlier results, all the initial fields are considered weak and a completely quantum mechanical model is used here to describe the system. Perturbative solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various field modes are obtained using Sen-Mandal technique. Obtained solutions are subsequently used to show the existence of singl…
Single photon sources are necessary for optical quantum technology. The nonclassicality of emitted single photons manifests itself in diverse experiments and applications. The applications already require different nonclassical aspects of single photons, however, a suitable hierarchy of criteria is missing. We propose variable experimental tests, based on adjustable linear optical networks and single photon detectors, giving a hierarchy of such nonclassicality criteria. The hierarchy goes beyond Hanbury - Brown - Twiss test of photon antibunching and allows us to compare faithfully quality and…
Broadband light sources play essential roles in diverse fields, such as high-capacity optical communications, optical coherence tomography, optical spectroscopy, and spectrograph calibration. Though an ultrabroadband nonclassical state from standard spontaneous parametric down-conversion may serve as a quantum counterpart, its detection and quantum characterization have been a challenging task. Here we demonstrate the quantitative characterization of a multimode structure in such an ultrabroadband (150 nm FWHM) squeezed state at telecom wavelength (1.5 μm). The nonclassical photon distribution…
Explicit expressions for optical tomograms of the photon-added coherent states, even/odd photon-added coherent states and photon-added thermal states are given in terms of Hermite polynomials. Suggestions for experimental homodyne detection of the considered photon states are presented.
Continuous variable Beam Splitter (BS) generated entanglement from single mode optical states generated by single nonclassicality (NC) inducing operation have been found of immense importance in several information processing tasks. There exists a broader class of optical states, generated from successive action of multiple different NC-inducing operations, which show many intriguing nonclassical properties; however the BS conversion of the NC for such states remains unexplored. In this work we have critically analyzed the BS generated entanglement from such nonclassical optical states at inpu…
The original idea of quantum optical spring arises from the requirement of quantization of the frequency of oscillations in the Hamiltonian of harmonic oscillator. This purpose is achieved by considering a spring whose constant (and so its frequency) depends on the quantum states of another system. Recently, it is realized that by the assumption of frequency modulation of $ω$ to $ω\sqrt{1+μa^\dagger a}$ the mentioned idea can be established. In the present paper, we generalize the approach of quantum optical spring with particular attention to the {\it dependence of frequency to the intensity …
Optical parametric process occurring in a photonic band-gap planar waveguide is studied from the point of view of nonclassical-light generation. Nonlinearly interacting optical fields are described by the generalized superposition of coherent signals and noise using the method of operator linear corrections to a classical strong solution. Scattered backward-propagating fields are taken into account. Squeezed light as well as light with sub-Poissonian statistics can be obtained in two-mode fields under the specified conditions.
Nonclassical states of light play a central role in many quantum information protocols. Their quantum features have been exploited to improve the readout of information from digital memories, modelled as arrays of microscopic beam splitters [S. Pirandola, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 090504 (2011)]. In this model of "quantum reading", a nonclassical source of light with Einstein-Podolski-Rosen correlations has been proven to retrieve more information than any classical source. In particular, the quantum-classical comparison has been performed under a global energy constraint, i.e., by fixing the mean…
Atoms trapped in optical lattice have long been a system of interest in the AMO community, and in recent years much study has been devoted to both short- and long-range coherence in this system, as well as to its possible applications to quantum information processing. Here we demonstrate for the first time complete determination of the quantum phase space distributions for an ensemble of $^{85}Rb$ atoms in such a lattice, including a negative Wigner function for atoms in an inverted state.
Nonclassical optomechanical correlations enable optical control of mechanical motion beyond the limitations of classical driving. Here we investigate the feasibility of using pulsed cavity-optomechanics to create and verify nonclassical phase-sensitive correlations between light and the motion of a levitated nanoparticle in a realistic scenario. We show that optomechanical two-mode squeezing can persist even at the elevated temperatures of state-of-the-art experimental setups. We introduce a detection scheme based on optical homodyning that allows revealing nonclassical correlations without fu…
Generation of nonclassical light suitable for interaction with atoms corresponds to a crucial goal pursued across the broad quantum optics community. We present the generation of nonclassical photon pairs using the process of spontaneous four-wave mixing in warm atomic vapor with an unprecedentedly high degree of nonclassical photon correlations. We show how the unique combination of excitation of atoms in the proximity of the vapor cell viewport, single excitation laser beam, double-$Λ$ energy level scheme, auxiliary optical pumping, and particular optical filtering setups, allow for the spec…
The quantum statistics of damped higher-order optical solitons are analyzed numerically, using cumulant-expansion techniques in Gaussian approximation. A detailed analysis of nonclassical properties in both the time and the frequency domain is given, with special emphasis on the role of absorption. Highly nonclassical broadband spectral correlation is predicted.
We study an optomechanical system for the purpose of generating a nonclassical mechanical state when a mechanical oscillator is quadratically coupled to a single-mode cavity field driven by a squeezed optical field. The system corresponds to a regime where the optical dissipation dominates both the mechanical damping and the optomechanical coupling. We identify that multi-phonon processes emerge in the optomechanical system and show that a mechanical oscillator prepared in the ground state will evolve into an amplitude-squared squeezed vacuum state. The Wigner distribution of the steady state …
We motivate and introduce a class of "hierarchical" quantum superposition states of $N$ coupled quantum oscillators. Unlike other well-known multimode photonic Schrödinger cat states such as entangled coherent states, the hierarchical superposition states are characterized as two-branch superpositions of tensor products of single-mode Schrödinger cat states. In addition to analyzing the photon statistics and quasiprobability distributions of prominent examples of these nonclassical states, we consider their usefulness for high-precision quantum metrology of nonlinear optical Hamiltonians and q…
The efficient certification of nonclassical effects of light forms the basis for applications in optical quantum technologies. We derive general correlation conditions for the verification of nonclassical light based on multiplexed detection. The obtained nonclassicality criteria are valid for imperfectly-balanced multiplexing scenarios with on-off detectors and do not require any knowledge about the detector system. In this sense they are fully independent of the detector system. In our experiment, we study light emitted by clusters of single-photon emitters, whose photon number may exceed th…
Squeezing experiments which are capable of creating a minimum uncertainty state during the nonlinear process, for example optical parametric amplification, are commonly used to produce light far below the quantum noise limit. This report presents a method with which one can characterize this minimum uncertainty state and gain valuable knowledge of the experimental setup.
It is well-known that the precision of a phase measurement with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer employing strong (macroscopic) classic light can be greatly enhanced with the addition of a weak (microscopic) light field in a non-classical state. The resulting precision is much greater than that possible with either the macroscopic classical or microscopic quantum states alone. In the context of quantifying non-classicality, the amount by which a non-classical state can enhance precision in this way has been termed its "metrological power". Given the technological difficulty of producing high-ampl…
In this review, we introduce the notion of quantum nonclassicality of light, and the role of nonclassicality in optical quantum metrology. The first part of the paper focuses on defining and characterizing the notion of nonclassicality and how it may be quantified in radiation fields. Several prominent examples of nonclassical light is also discussed. The second part of the paper looks at quantum metrology through the lens of nonclassicality. We introduce key concepts such as the Quantum Fisher information, the Cram{é}r-Rao bound, the standard quantum limit and the Heisenberg limit, and discus…
Optical parametric process occurring in a nonlinear planar waveguide can serve as a source of light with nonclassical properties. Properties of the generated fields are substantially modified by scattering of the nonlinearly interacting fields in a photonic band-gap structure inside the waveguide. A quantum model of linear operator amplitude corrections to amplitude mean-values provides conditions for an efficient squeezed-light generation as well as generation of light with sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics. Destructive influence of phase mismatch of the nonlinear interaction can fully …
A model is proposed where two $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear waveguides are contained in a cavity suited for second-harmonic generation. The evanescent wave coupling between the waveguides is considered as weak, and the interplay between this coupling and the nonlinear interaction within the waveguides gives rise to quantum violations of the classical limit. These violations are particularly strong when two instabilities are competing, where twin-beam behavior is found as almost complete noise suppression in the difference of the fundamental intensities. Moreover, close to bistable transitions perfect tw…
We report on the experimental quantum teleportation of strongly nonclassical wave packets of light. To perform this full quantum operation while preserving and retrieving the fragile non-classicality of the input state, we have developed a broadband, zero-dispersion teleportation apparatus that works in conjunction with time-resolved state preparation equipment. Our approach brings within experimental reach a whole new set of hybrid protocols involving discrete- and continuous-variable techniques in quantum information processing for optical sciences.
Quantum resource theory is perhaps the most revolutionary framework that quantum physics has ever experienced. It plays vigorous roles in unifying the quantification methods of a requisite quantum effect as wells as in identifying protocols that optimize its usefulness in a given application in areas ranging from quantum information to computation. Moreover, the resource theories have transmuted radical quantum phenomena like coherence, nonclassicality and entanglement from being just intriguing to being helpful in executing realistic thoughts. A general quantum resource theoretical framework …
We report the experimental reconstruction of the statistical properties of an ultrafast pulsed type-II parametric down conversion source in a periodically poled KTP waveguide at telecom wavelengths, with almost perfect photon-number correlations. We used a photon-number-resolving time-multiplexed detector based on a fiber-optical setup and a pair of avalanche photodiodes. By resorting to a germane data-pattern tomography, we assess the properties of the nonclassical light states states with unprecedented precision.
Based on the measurement of quantum correlation functions, the quantum statistical properties of spectral measurements are studied for broadband radiation fields. The spectral filtering of light before its detection is compared with the direct detection followed by the spectral analysis of the recorded photocurrents. As an example, the squeezing spectra of the atomic resonance fluorescence are studied for both types of filtering procedures. The conditions for which the detection of the nonclassical signatures of the radiation is possible are analyzed. For the considered example, photocurrent f…
We study a novel optical setup which is able to select a specific Fock component from a generic input state. The device allows to synthesize number states and superpositions of few number states, and to measure the photon distribution and the density matrix of a generic input signal.
We analyze homodyne detection of macroscopically bright multimode nonclassical states of light and propose their application in quantum communication. We observe that the homodyne detection is sensitive to a mode-matching of the bright light to the highly intense local oscillator. Unmatched bright modes of light result in additional noise which technically limits detection of Gaussian entanglement at macroscopic level. When the mode-matching is sufficient, we show that multimode quantum key distribution with bright beams is feasible. It finally merges the quantum communication with classical o…
Higher order nonclassical properties of fields propagating through a codirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler which is prepared by combining a linear wave guide and a nonlinear (quadratic) wave guide operated by second harmonic generation are studied. A completely quantum mechanical description is used here to describe the system. Closed form analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various modes are used to show the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing, higher order two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the asymmetric nonlinear optical c…
The threshold between classical and nonclassical two-qubit states is drawn at the place when these states can no longer be described by classical correlations, i.e., quantum discord or entanglement appear. However, to check if the correlations are classical (in terms of quantum discord and entanglement) it is sufficient to witness the lack of quantum discord because its zero value implies the lack of entanglement. We explain how the indicator of quantum discord introduced by Girolami and Adesso [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 150403 (2012)] can be practically measured in linear-optical systems using st…
An optical four-level atomic discrete system through optical induction is proposed. A theoretical scheme to produce nonclassical lattice solitons (NLS) in the system is presented with the use of the effects of enhanced self-phase modulation and the giant kerr effect in the electromagnetically induced transparency. The power density and the photon flux can be tuned to a very low level by the controlling field and the soliton can propagate with very slow group velocity. By changing the sign of the detuning $Δ_{1}$, both in-phase and $π$ out-of-phase NLSs can be produced in this system.
Nonclassical properties of photon added and subtracted displaced Fock states have been studied using various witnesses of lower- and higher-order nonclassicality. Compact analytic expressions are obtained for the nonclassicality witnesses. Using those expressions, it is established that these states and the states that can be obtained as their limiting cases (except coherent states) are highly nonclassical as they show the existence of lower- and higher-order antibunching and sub-Poissonian photon statistics, in addition to the nonclassical features revealed through the Mandel $Q_M$ parameter,…
We present a robust tool to analyze nonclassical properties of multimode twin-beam states in the mesoscopic photon-number domain. The measurements are performed by direct detection. The analysis exploits three different non-classicality criteria for detected photons exhibiting complementary behavior in the explored intensity regime. Joint signal-idler photon-number distributions and quasi-distributions of integrated intensities are determined and compared with the corresponding distributions of detected photons. Experimental conditions optimal for nonclassical properties of twin-beam states ar…
