M87 is arguably the best supermassive black hole (BH) to explore the jet and/or accretion physics due to its proximity and fruitful high-resolution multi-waveband observations. We model the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) of M87 core that observed at a scale of 0.4 arcsec ($\sim 10^5R_{\rm g}$, $R_{\rm g}$ is gravitational radius) as recently presented by Prieto et al. Similar to Sgr A*, we find that the millimeter bump as observed by Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) can be modeled by the synchrotron emission of the thermal electrons in advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF), while the low-frequency radio emission and X-ray emission may dominantly come from the jet. The millimeter radiation from ADAF dominantly come from the region within $10R_{\rm g}$, which is roughly consistent with the recent very long baseline interferometry observations at 230\,GHz. We further calculate the Faraday rotation measure (RM) from both ADAF and jet models, and find that the RM predicted from the ADAF is roughly consistent with the measured value while the RM predicted from the jet is much higher if jet velocity close to the BH is low or moderate (e.g., $v_{\rm jet}\lesssim0.6\,c$). With the constraints from the SED modeling and RM, we find that the accretion rate close to the BH horizon is $\sim (0.2-1)\times10^{-3}{M}_{\odot} \rm yr^{-1}\ll\dot{\it M}_{\rm B}\sim 0.2\it {M}_{\odot} \rm yr^{-1}$ ($\dot{M}_{\rm B}$ is Bondi accretion rate), where the electron density profile, $n_{\rm e}\propto r^{\sim -1}$, in the accretion flow is consistent with that determined from X-ray observation inside the Bondi radius and recent numerical simulations.
We study model images and polarization maps of Sagittarius A* at 230 GHz. We post-process GRMHD simulations and perform a fully relativistic radiative transfer calculation of the emitted synchrotron radiation to obtain polarized images for a range of mass accretion rates and electron temperatures. At low accretion rates, the polarization map traces the underlying toroidal magnetic field geometry. At high accretion rates, we find that Faraday rotation internal to the emission region can depolarize and scramble the map. We measure the net linear polarization fraction and find that high accretion…
Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) are believed to be powered by an accretion-jet model, consisting of an inner advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), an outer truncated standard thin disk, and a jet. But model degeneracy still exists in this framework. For example, the X-ray emission can originate from either the ADAF or jet. The aim of the present work is to check these models with the Faraday rotation measure (RM) observations recently detected for two LLAGNs, M87 and 3C 84, in the sub-mm band. For M87, we find that the RM predicted by the model in which the X-ray emission o…
We study Faraday rotation in the jet of M87 inside the Bondi radius using eight Very Long Baseline Array data sets, one at 8 GHz, four at 5 GHz, and three at 2 GHz. We obtain Faraday rotation measures (RMs) measured across the bandwidth of each data set. We find that the magnitude of RM systematically decreases with increasing distance from the black hole from 5,000 to 200,000 Schwarzschild radii. The data, showing predominantly negative RM sign without significant difference of the RMs on the northern and southern jet edges, suggest that the spatial extent of the Faraday screen is much larger…
Faraday rotation has been seen at millimeter wavelengths in several low luminosity active galactic nuclei, including Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) targets M87* and Sgr A*. The observed rotation measure (RM) probes the density, magnetic field, and temperature of material integrated along the line of sight. To better understand how accretion disc conditions are reflected in the RM, we perform polarized radiative transfer calculations using a set of general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations appropriate for M87*. We find that in spatially resolved millimetre wavelength images o…
Sgr A* is probably the supermassive black hole being investigated most extensively due to its proximity. Several theoretical models for its steady state emission have been proposed in the past two decades. Both the radiative-inefficient accretion flow and the jet model have been shown to well explain the observed spectral energy distribution. Faraday rotation measure (RM) has been unambiguously measured at submillimeter wavelength, but has only been tested against the accretion flow model. Here we first calculate the RM based on the jet model and find that the predicted value is two orders of …
We present the first constraint on Faraday rotation measure (RM) at submillimeter wavelengths for the nucleus of M 87. By fitting the polarization position angles ($χ$) observed with the SMA at four independent frequencies around $\sim$230 GHz and interpreting the change in $χ$ as a result of \emph{external} Faraday rotation associated with accretion flow, we determine the rotation measure of the M 87 core to be between $-$7.5$\times$10$^{5}$ and 3.4$\times$10$^{5}$ rad/m$^{2}$. Assuming a density profile of the accretion flow that follows a power-law distribution and a magnetic field that is …
Non-VLBI measurements of Faraday rotation at mm wavelengths have been used to constrain mass accretion rates ($\mdot$) onto supermassive black holes in the centre of the Milky Way and in the centre of M87. We constructed general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics models for these sources that qualitatively well describe their spectra and radio/mm images invoking a coupled jet-disk system. Using general relativistic polarized radiative transfer, we now also model the observed mm rotation measure (RM) of M87. The models are tied to the observed radio flux, however, electron temperature and accret…
General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of accreting black holes in the radiatively inefficient regime show that systems with sufficient magnetic poloidal flux become magnetically arrested disc (MAD) systems, with a well-defined relationship between the magnetic flux and the mass accretion rate. Recently, Zamaninasab (2014) report that the jet magnetic flux and accretion disc luminosity are tightly correlated over 7 orders of magnitude for a sample of 76 radio-loud active galaxies, concluding that the data are explained by the MAD mode of accretion. Their analysis assumes …

Two types of correlations between the radio and X-ray luminosities ($L_R$ and $L_X$) have been found in black hole X-ray binaries. For some sources, they follow the `original' type of correlation which is described by a single power-law. Later it was found that some other sources follow a different correlation consisting of three power-law branches, with each branch having different power-law indexes. In this work, we explain these two types of correlation under the coupled accretion--jet model. We attribute the difference between these two types of sources to the different value of viscosity …
We present the combination of dynamical accretion model based on 3D GRMHD simulations and general relativistic (GR) polarized radiative transfer. We write down the formalism of and perform the GR ray-tracing of cyclo-synchrotron radiation through the model of accretion flow in Sagittarius A*. GR polarimetric imaging is presented as well as the results for spectrum for a probable set of spins and orientations. Precise fitting formulae for Faraday rotation and Faraday conversion coefficients are employed for thermal plasma. The axisymmetic flow pattern and the magnetic field geometry correspond …
We provide precise fitting formulae for Faraday conversion and rotation coefficients in uniformly magnetized relativistic plasma. The formulae are immediately applicable to Rotation Measure and Circular Polarization (CP) production in jets and hot accretion flows. We show the recipe and results for arbitrary isotropic particle distributions, in particular thermal and power-law. The exact Faraday conversion coefficient is found to approach zero with the increasing particle energy. The non-linear corrections of Faraday conversion and rotation coefficients are found essential for reliable CP inte…
The upcoming IXPE (2-8 keV) and XL-Calibur (15-75 keV) missions will make it possible to measure the linear polarization of X-rays from mass accreting stellar mass black holes with unprecedented sensitivity, enabling the accurate measurement of percent-level and in some cases even sub-percent level polarization fractions. The measurements are expected to constrain the spins, inclinations, and the structure of the accretion flows of the observed black holes. The effects of Faraday rotation and birefringence of the Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) vacuum may impact the observable polarization fract…
In this work we interpret and discuss the time variable rotation measure (RM) found, for the first time over a 1-yr period, in the core region of a blazar. These results are based on a one-year, multi-frequency (15, 24, and 43 GHz) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). We investigate the Faraday screen properties and its location with respect to the jet emitting region. Given that the 43 GHz radio core flux density and the RM time evolution suggest a similar trend, we explore the possible connection between the RM and the accretion rate. Among th…

We report the discovery of Faraday rotation toward radio source 3C 84, the active galactic nucleus in NGC1275 at the core of the Perseus Cluster. The rotation measure (RM), determined from polarization observations at wavelengths of 1.3 and 0.9 mm, is (8.7 +/- 2.3) x 10^5 radians/m^2, among the largest ever measured. The RM remained relatively constant over a 2 year period even as the intrinsic polarization position angle wrapped through a span of 300 degrees. The Faraday rotation is likely to originate either in the boundary layer of the radio jet from the nucleus, or in the accretion flow on…
Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binary systems containing a strongly magnetized white dwarf that accretes matter coming from an M-dwarf companion. High-energy radiation coming from those objects is emitted from the accretion column close to the white dwarf photosphere at the impact region. Its properties depend on the characteristics of the white dwarf and an accurate accretion column model allows the properties of the binary system to be inferred, such as the white dwarf mass, its magnetic field, and the accretion rate. We study the temporal and spectral behaviour of the accretion re…
Spectropolarimetric detection of baryonic mass loading in a transient relativistic jet: application to the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8$-$1613
Millimeter polarimetry of Sgr A* probes the linearly polarized emission region on a scale of $\sim 10$ Schwarzschild radii ($R_S$) as well as the dense, magnetized accretion flow on scales out to the Bondi radius ($\sim 10^5 R_S$) through Faraday rotation. We present here multi-epoch ALMA Band 6 (230 GHz) polarimetry of Sgr A*. The results confirm a mean rotation measure, ${\rm RM} \approx -5 \times 10^5 {\rm\ rad\ m^{-2}}$, consistent with measurements over the past 20 years and support an interpretation of the RM as originating from a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) with $\dot{…
Using the flux resolved spectroscopy for the first time, we analyse the RXTE/PCA data of the black hole X-ray binaries GRS 1915+105 and IGR J17091-3624, when both sources show large amplitude, quasi-regular oscillations in 2.0-60.0 keV X-ray light curves. For different observations, we extract spectra during the peak (spectrally soft) and dip (spectrally hard) intervals of the oscillation, and find that their spectra are phenomenologically complex, requiring at least two distinct spectral components. Besides a thermal Comptonization component, we find that the disc emission is better modelled …
The first image of the black hole (BH) M87* obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has the shape of a crescent extending from the E to WSW position angles, with a tentative 'ESE hotspot'. Assuming that the BH spin vector is aligned with both the inner accretion axis and the projected direction of the kpc-scale relativistic jet, the position of the ESE hotspot is inconsistent with the axisymmetric accretion flow. Recent polarimetric EHT images of M87* show that the ESE hotspot is essentially unpolarized, which strongly supports its distinct origin. If the hotspot emission is due to the s…

The formation of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is related to accretion on to their central supermassive black holes, and magnetic fields are believed to play a central role in launching, collimating and accelerating the jet streams from very compact regions out to kiloparsec or megaparsec scales. In the presence of helical or toroidal magnetic fields threading the AGN jets and their immediate vicinity, gradients in the observed Faraday rotation measures are expected due to the systematic change in the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field across the jet. We have ana…
Radiative efficiency in radio-loud AGN is governed by the scaled accretion rate on to the central black hole rather than directly by the type of accreted matter; while it correlates with real physical differences, it does not give us unambiguous information about particular objects.

The idea that systematic Faraday Rotation gradients across the parsec-scale jets of AGNs can reveal the presence of helical magnetic (B) fields has been around since the early 1990s. These gradients are taken to be due to the systematic variation of the line of sight-B-field across the jet. We present here the parsec-scale Faraday Rotation distributions for the BL Lac objects 0716+714 and 1749+701, based on polarization data obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at two wavelengths near each of the 2cm, 4cm and 6cm bands (0716+714) and at four wavelengths in the range 18-22 cm (1749…
We use analytic estimates and numerical simulations of test particles interacting with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence to show that subsonic MHD turbulence produces efficient second-order Fermi acceleration of relativistic particles. This acceleration is not well-described by standard quasi-linear theory but is a consequence of resonance broadening of wave-particle interactions in MHD turbulence. We provide momentum diffusion coefficients that can be used for astrophysical and heliospheric applications and discuss the implications of our results for accretion flows onto black holes. In pa…

Blazars are variable targets in the sky, whose variation mechanism remains an open question. In this work, we make a comprehensive study on the variation phenomena of the spectral index and polarization degree (PD) to deeply understand the variation mechanism of B2 1633+382 (4C 38.41). We use the local cross-correlation function (LCCF) to perform the correlation analysis between multi-wavelength light curves. We find that both $γ$-ray and optical $V$-band are correlated with the radio 15 GHz at the beyond 3$σ$ confidence level. Based on the lag analysis, the emitting regions of $γ$-ray and opt…
The probability density function of accretion disc luminosity fluctuations at high observed energies (i.e., energies larger than the peak temperature scale of the disc) is derived, under the assumption that the temperature fluctuations are log-normally distributed. Thin disc theory is used throughout. While log-normal temperature fluctuations would imply that the disc's bolometric luminosity is also log-normal, the observed Wien-like luminosity behaves very differently. For example, in contrast to a log-normal distribution, the standard deviation of the derived distribution is not linearly pro…
We study reflected X-ray emission that returns to the accretion disc in the strong gravitational fields around black holes using General Relativistic ray tracing and radiative transfer calculations. Reflected X-rays that are produced when the inner regions of the disc are illuminated by the corona are subject to strong gravitational light bending, causing up to 47 per cent of the reflected emission to be returned to the disc around a rapidly spinning black hole, depending upon the scale height of the corona. The iron K line is enhanced relative to the continuum by 25 per cent, and the Compton …
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) host some of the most energetic phenomena in the Universe. AGN are thought to be powered by accretion of matter onto a rotating disk that surrounds a supermassive black hole. Jet streams can be boosted in energy near the event horizon of the black hole and then flow outward along the rotation axis of the disk. The mechanism that forms such a jet and guides it over scales from a few light-days up to millions of light-years remains uncertain, but magnetic fields are thought to play a critical role. Using the Atacama large mm/submm array (ALMA), we have detected a pol…

We analyze 134 ks Chandra ACIS-I observations of the Galactic Centre (GC) performed in July 2011. The X-ray image with the field of view $17' \times 17'$ contains the hot plasma surrounding the Sgr~A*. The obtained surface brightness map allow us to fit Bondi hot accretion flow to the innermost hot plasma around the GC. We have fitted spectra from region up to $5"$ from Sgr~A* using a thermal bremsstrahlung model and four Gaussian profiles responsible for K$_α$ emission lines of Fe, S, Ar, and Ca. The X-ray surface brightness profile up to $3"$ from Sgr~A* found in our data image, was successf…

Context. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) launch highly energetic jets sometimes outshining their host galaxy. These jets are collimated outflows that have been accelerated near a supermassive black hole located at the centre of the galaxy. Their, virtually indispensable, energy reservoir is either due to gravitational energy released from accretion or due to the extraction of kinetic energy from the rotating supermassive black hole itself. In order to channel part of this energy to the jet, though, the presence of magnetic fields is necessary. The extent to which these magnetic fields survive in …
The X-ray and radio flares observed in X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei (AGN) are attributed to energetic electrons in the plasma ejecta from the accretion flows near the black hole in these systems. It is argued that magnetic reconnection could occur in the coronae above the accretion disk around the black hole, and that this drives plasmoid outflows resembling the solar coronal mass ejection (CME) phenomenon. The X-ray and radio flares are emission from energetic electrons produced in the process. As the emission region is located near the black hole event horizon, the flare emissio…
Ongoing millimeter VLBI observations with the Event Horizon Telescope allow unprecedented study of the innermost portion of black hole accretion flows. Interpreting the observations requires relativistic, time-dependent physical modeling. We discuss the comparison of radiative transfer calculations from general relativistic MHD simulations of Sagittarius A* and M87 with current and future mm-VLBI observations. This comparison allows estimates of the viewing geometry and physical conditions of the Sgr A* accretion flow. The viewing geometry for M87 is already constrained from observations of it…
With unprecedented angular resolution, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has opened a new era of black holes. We have previously calculated the expected polarization images of M87* with the EHT observations in mind. There, we demonstrated that circular polarization (CP) images, as well as the linear polarization (LP) maps, can convey quite useful information to us, such as the flow structure and magnetic field configuration around the black hole. In this paper, we make new predictions for the cases in which disk emission dominates over jet emission, bearing Sgr A* in mind. Here we set the prot…
The spectacular images of the M87 black hole taken by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) have opened a new era of black hole research. One of the next issues is to take polarization images around the central black hole (BH). Since radio emission is produced by synchrotron process, polarization properties should vividly reflect the magnetic field structure at the jet base and thus provide good information regarding the magnetic mechanism of jet formation. With this kept in mind we perform general relativistic (GR) radiative transfer calculations of polarized light based on the GR magnetohydrodyn…
