We use the HII galaxies $L - σ$ relation and the resulting Hubble expansion cosmological probe of a sample of just 25 high-$z$ (up to $z \sim 2.33$) HII galaxies, in a joint likelihood analysis with other well tested cosmological probes (CMB, BAOs) in an attempt to constrain the dark energy equation of state (EoS). The constraints, although still weak, are in excellent agreement with those of a similar joint analysis using the well established SNIa Hubble expansion probe. Interestingly, even with the current small number of available high redshift HII galaxies, the HII/BAO/CMB joint analysis gives a 13% improvement of the quintessence dark energy cosmological constraints compared to the BAO/CMB joint analysis. We have further performed extensive Monte Carlo simulations, with a realistic redshift sampling, to explore the extent to which the use of the $L - σ$ relation, observed in HII galaxies, can constrain effectively the parameter space of the dark energy EoS. The simulations predict substantial improvement in the constraints when increasing the sample of high-$z$ HII galaxies to 500, a goal that can be achieved in reasonable observing times with existing large telescopes and state-of-the-art instrumentation.
We consider several well-known f(R) cosmological models and constrain their parameters, namely the deviation parameter b and the cosmological parameters Ω_m and h. We first obtain analytical approximations for the Hubble rate H(z) and the luminosity distance d_L(z) in terms of these parameters, and then test these against the observational expansion rate derived from cosmic chronometers and the distance modulus in the HII galaxy Hubble diagram, obtained in a model-independent way using Gaussian Processes (GP). We first optimize the models based solely on the cosmic chronometers and then repeat…

A tale of seven narrow spikes and a long trough: constraining the timing of the percolation of HII bubbles at the tail-end of reionization with ULAS J1120+0641
We present novel cosmological constraints based on a joint analysis of our HII galaxies (HIIG) Hubble relation with the full Planck Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy spectrum and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) probes. The HII galaxies span a large redshift range $(0.088 \le z \le 2.5)$, reaching significantly higher redshifts than available SNIa and hence they probe the cosmic expansion at earlier times. Our independent constraints compare well with those based on the Pantheon compilation of SNIa data, which we also analyse. We find our results to be in agreement with the conforma…
The $L-σ$ relation of HII galaxies (HIIGx) calibrated by a distance indicator is a reliable standard candle for measuring the Hubble constant $H_0$. The most straightforward calibration technique anchors them with the first tier of distance ladders from the same galaxies. Recently another promising method that uses the cosmological model-independent Cosmic Chronometers (CC) as a calibrator has been proposed. We promote this technique by removing the assumptions about the cosmic flatness and using a non-parametric Artificial Neural Network for the data reconstruction process. We observe a corre…
We present independent determinations of cosmological parameters using the distance estimator based on the established correlation between the Balmer line luminosity, L(H$β$), and the velocity dispersion ($σ$) for HII galaxies (HIIG). These results are based on new VLT-KMOS high spectral resolution observations of 41 high-z ($1.3 \leq$ z $\leq 2.6$) HIIG combined with published data for 45 high-z and 107 z $\leq 0.15$ HIIG, while the cosmological analysis is based on the MultiNest MCMC procedure not considering systematic uncertainties. Using only HIIG to constrain the matter density parameter…
A number of current and future experiments aim to detect the reionization of neutral hydrogen by the first stars and galaxies in the Universe via the redshifted 21cm line. Using the \textsc{BlueTides} simulation, we investigate the measurement of an \textit{average} ionised region towards the beginning of reionization by stacking redshifted 21cm images around optically identified bright galaxies using mock observations. We find that with an SKA 1000 hour observation, assuming perfect foreground subtraction, a $5σ$ detection of a stacked HII region can be made with 30 images around some of the …
Revisiting the cosmic distance duality relation with machine learning reconstruction methods: the combination of HII galaxies and ultra-compact radio quasars
We place novel constraints on the cosmokinetic parameters by using a joint analysis of the newest VLT-KMOS HII galaxies (HIIG) with the Supernovae Type Ia (SNIa) Pantheon sample. We combine the latter datasets in order to reconstruct, in a model-independent way, the Hubble diagram to as high redshifts as possible. Using a Gaussian process we derive the basic cosmokinetic parameters and compare them with those of $Λ$CDM. In the case of SNIa, we find that the extracted values of the cosmokinetic parameters are in agreement with the predictions of $Λ$CDM model. Combining SNIa with high redshift t…
Using the CoDa II simulation, we study the Ly$α$ transmissivity of the intergalactic medium (IGM) during reionization. At $z>6$, a typical galaxy without an active galactic nucleus fails to form a proximity zone around itself due to the overdensity of the surrounding IGM. The gravitational infall motion in the IGM makes the resonance absorption extend to the red side of Ly$α$, suppressing the transmission up to roughly the circular velocity of the galaxy. In some sight lines, an optically thin blob generated by a supernova in a neighboring galaxy results in a peak feature, which can be mistake…
