short contribution to appear in "Massive Young Star Clusters Near and Far: From the Milky Way to Reionization", 2013 Guillermo Haro Conference, Eds. Y. D. Mayya, D. Rosa-Gonzalez & E. Terlevich, INAOE and AMC. 4 pages, 2 figures
HII galaxies are clumpy and their gas kinematics can be mapped to show the global turbulent motions and the effect of massive star evolution. The distribution of their physical conditions is homogeneous and oxygen abundance is uniform. The presence of nebular HeII 4868 line seems to be higher in a low abundance galaxy, implying a harder ionization power probably due to stars in low metallicity. Innovative methods of data cube analysis, namely PCA tomography (nicknamed 4D), seem promising in revealing additional information not detected with the standard methods. I review some of our own recent work on the 3D spectroscopy of HII galaxies.
We present observations of CH3CN (12-11) emission at a resolution of 2" toward the shell-like ultracompact HII region G5.89-0.39 with the Submillimeter Array. The integrated CH3CN emission reveals dense and hot molecular cocoon in the periphery of the HII region G5.89-0.39, with a CH3CN deficient region roughly centered at G5.89-0.39. By analyzing the CH3CN emission using population diagram analysis, we find, for the first time, a decreasing temperature structure from 150 to 40 K with the projected distance from Feldt's star, which is thought to be responsible for powering the HII region. Our …
We investigate evolution of clumpy galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) samples of ~17,000 photo-z and Lyman break galaxies at z~0-8. We detect clumpy galaxies with off-center clumps in a self-consistent algorithm that is well tested with previous study results, and measure the number fraction of clumpy galaxies at the rest-frame UV, f_clumpy^UV. We identify an evolutionary trend of f_clumpy^UV over z~0-8 for the first time: f_clumpy^UV increases from z~8 to z~1-3 and subsequently decreases from z~1 to z~0, which follows the trend of Madau-Lilly plot. A low average Sersic index of n~…
Using the Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys data in the COSMOS field, we systematically searched clumpy galaxies at 0.2<z<1.0 and investigated the fraction of clumpy galaxies and its evolution as a function of stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and specific SFR (SSFR). The fraction of clumpy galaxies in star-forming galaxies with Mstar > 10^9.5 Msun decreases with time from ~0.35 at 0.8<z<1.0 to ~0.05 at 0.2<z<0.4 irrespective of the stellar mass, although the fraction tends to be slightly lower for massive galaxies with Mstar > 10^10.5 Msun at each redshift. On the othe…
An Indication of Gas Inflow in Clumpy Star-Forming Galaxies near $z\sim1$: Lower Gas-Phase Metallicities in Clumpy Galaxies Compared to Non-Clumpy Galaxies
Luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) have enhanced star formation rates and compact morphologies. We combine Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with HI data of 29 LCBGs at redshift z~0 to understand their nature. We find that local LCBGs have high atomic gas fractions (~50%) and star formation rates per stellar mass consistent with some high redshift star forming galaxies. Many local LCBGs also have clumpy morphologies, with clumps distributed across their disks. Although rare, these galaxies appear to be similar to the clumpy star forming galaxies commonly observed at z~1-3. Local LCBGs separate…
We examine a possible formation scenario of galactic thick discs with numerical simulations. Thick discs have previously been argued to form in clumpy disc phase in the high-redshift Universe, which host giant clumps of <10^9 M_sun in their highly gas-rich discs. We performed SPH simulations using isolated galaxy models for the purpose of verifying whether dynamical and chemical properties of the thick discs formed in such clumpy galaxies are compatible with observations. The results of our simulations seem nearly consistent with observations in dynamical properties such as radial and vertical…
We present a simple theoretical framework for massive galaxies at high redshift, where the main assembly and star formation occurred, and report on the first cosmological simulations that reveal clumpy disks consistent with our analysis. The evolution is governed by the interplay between smooth and clumpy cold streams, disk instability, and bulge formation. Intense, relatively smooth streams maintain an unstable dense gas-rich disk. Instability with high turbulence and giant clumps, each a few percent of the disk mass, is self-regulated by gravitational interactions within the disk. The clumps…
The onset of the {\it JWST}-era provides a much-improved opportunity to characterize the resolved structure of early star forming systems. Previous {\it Spitzer} observations of $z\gtrsim 6$ galaxies revealed the presence of old stars and luminous HII regions (via [OIII]+H$β$ emission), but the poor resolution stunted our ability to map their locations with respect to the star forming regions identified in the rest-UV. In this paper, we investigate the internal structure of 12 of the most luminous $z\simeq 6-8$ galaxies in the EGS field observed with recent {\it JWST}/NIRCam imaging. The syste…
Clumpy galaxies in the GEMS and GOODS fields are examined for clues to their evolution into modern spirals. The magnitudes of the clumps and the surface brightnesses of the interclump regions are measured and fitted to models of stellar age and mass. There is an evolutionary trend from clump clusters with no evident interclump emission to clump clusters with faint red disks, to spiral galaxies of the flocculent or grand design types. Along this sequence, the interclump surface density increases and the mass surface density contrast between the clumps and the interclump regions decreases, sugge…
The formation of thick stellar disks in spiral galaxies is studied. Simulations of gas-rich young galaxies show formation of internal clumps by gravitational instabilities, clump coalescence into a bulge, and disk thickening by strong stellar scattering. The bulge and thick disks of modern galaxies may form this way. Simulations of minor mergers make thick disks too, but there is an important difference. Thick disks made by internal processes have a constant scale height with galactocentric radius, but thick disks made by mergers flare. The difference arises because in the first case, perpendi…
Many massive star forming disc galaxies in the redshift range 3 to 0.5 are observed to have a clumpy morphology showing giant clumps of size $\sim$1 kpc and masses of about $10^7M_{\odot}$ to $10^{10} M_{\odot}$. The nature and fate of these giant clumps is still under debate. In this work we use 19 high-resolution simulations of disc galaxies from the NIHAO sample to study the formation and the evolution of clumps in the discs of high redshift galaxies. We use mock HST - CANDELS observations created with the radiative transfer code GRASIL-3D to carry out, for the first time, a quantitative co…
We present constrained radiative transfer calculations of Lyman Alpha (Lya) photons propagating through clumpy, dusty, large scale outflows, and explore whether we can quantitatively explain the Lya halos that have been observed around Lyman Break Galaxies. We construct phenomenological models of large-scale outflows which consist of cold clumps that are in pressure equilibrium with a constant-velocity hot wind. First we consider models in which the cold clumps are distributed symmetrically around the galaxy, and in which the clumps undergo a continuous acceleration in its 'circumgalactic' med…
We have computed a series of realistic and self-consistent models that have been shown to be able to reproduce the emitted spectra of HII galaxies in a star bursting scenario (Martin-Majon et al. 2008). Our models combine different codes of chemical evolution, evolutionary population synthesis and photoionization. The emitted spectrum of HII galaxies is reproduced by means of the photoionization code CLOUDY (Ferland, 1998), using as ionizing spectrum the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the modelled HII galaxy, calculated using the new and updated stellar population models PopStar (Molla …
Spectroscopic observations of 63 HII regions in six spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678) were carried out with the 6-meter telescope (BTA) of Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory with the Spectral Camera attached to the focal reducer SCORPIO in the multislit mode with a dispersion of 2.1A/pixel and a spectral resolution of 10A. These observations were used to estimate the oxygen and nitrogen abundances and the electron temperatures in HII regions through the recent variant of the strong line method (NS calibration). The parameters of the radial di…
We present new high spectral resolution observations of 15 high-z ($1.3 \leq$ z $\leq 2.5$) HII Galaxies (HIIG) obtained with MOSFIRE at the Keck Observatory. These data, combined with already published data for another 31 high-z and 107 z $\leq 0.15$ HIIG, are used to obtain new independent cosmological results using the distance estimator based on the established correlation between the Balmer emission line velocity dispersion and luminosity for HIIG. Our results are in excellent agreement with the latest cosmological concordance model ($Λ$CDM) published results. From our analysis, we find a…
We use CANDELS imaging, 3D-HST spectroscopy, and Chandra X-ray data to investigate if active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are preferentially fueled by violent disk instabilities funneling gas into galaxy centers at 1.3<z<2.4. We select galaxies undergoing gravitational instabilities using the number of clumps and degree of patchiness as proxies. The CANDELS visual classification system is used to identify 44 clumpy disk galaxies, along with mass-matched comparison samples of smooth and intermediate morphology galaxies. We note that, despite being being mass-matched and having similar star formation …
Compact star-forming clumps observed in distant galaxies are often suggested to play a crucial role in galaxy assembly. In this paper, we use a novel approach of applying finite resolution deconvolution on ground-based images of the COSMOS field to resolve 20,185 star-forming galaxies (SFG) at 0.5<z<2 to an angular resolution of 0.3", and study their clumpy fractions. A comparison between the deconvolved and HST images across four different filters shows good agreement and validates the deconvolution. We model spectral energy distributions using the deconvolved 14-band images to provide resolv…
We present nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from 1 to 18 micron of a small sample of nearby, nearly face-on and undisturbed Seyfert galaxies without prominent nuclear dust lanes. These nuclear SEDs probe the central ~35 pc of the galaxies, on average, and include photometric and spectroscopic infrared (IR) data. We use these SEDs, the clumpy torus models of Nenkova et al. and a Bayesian approach to study the sensitivity of different IR wavelengths to the torus parameters. We find that high angular resolution 8-13 micron spectroscopy alone reliably constrains the number of clumps an…
We investigate the dust properties in three spectroscopically anomalous galaxies (IRAS F10398+1455, IRAS F21013-0739 and SDSS J0808+3948). Their Spitzer/IRS spectra are characterized by a steep ~5-8 micron emission continuum, strong emission bands from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, and prominent 10 micron silicate emission. The steep ~5-8 micron continuum and strong PAH emission features suggest the presence of starbursts, while the silicate emission is indicative of significant heating from AGNs. The simultaneous detection of these two observational properties has rarely be…
The relationship between the integrated H$β$ line luminosity and the velocity dispersion of the ionized gas of HII galaxies and giant HII regions represents an exciting standard candle that presently can be used up to redshifts z ~ 4. Locally it is used to obtain precise measurements of the Hubble constant by combining the slope of the relation obtained from nearby ($z \leq $ 0.2) HII galaxies with the zero point determined from giant HII regions belonging to an `anchor sample' of galaxies for which accurate redshift-independent distance moduli are available. We present new data for 36 giant H…
The Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) contributes to the nebular emission of galaxies, resulting in emission line flux ratios that can be significantly different from those produced by HII regions. Comparing the emission of [SII]6717,31 between pointed observations of HII regions in nearby galaxies and integrated spectra of more distant galaxies, it has been recently claimed that the DIG can also deeply affect the emission of bright, star-forming galaxies, and that a large correction must be applied to observed line ratios to recover the genuine contribution from HII regions. Here we show instead that…
Although giant clumps of stars are crucial to galaxy formation and evolution, the most basic demographics of clumps are still uncertain, mainly because the definition of clumps has not been thoroughly discussed. In this paper, we study the basic demographics of clumps in star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 0.5<z<3, using our proposed physical definition that UV-bright clumps are discrete star-forming regions that individually contribute more than 8% of the rest-frame UV light of their galaxies. Clumps defined this way are significantly brighter than the HII regions of nearby large spiral galaxies,…
Wolf-Rayet (WR) HII galaxies are local metal-poor star-forming galaxies, observed when the most massive stars are evolving from O stars to WR stars, making them template systems to study distant starbursts. We have been performing a program to investigate the interplay between massive stars and gas in WR HII galaxies using IFS. Here, we highlight some results from the first 3D spectroscopic study of Mrk 178, the closest metal-poor WR HII galaxy, focusing on the origin of the nebular HeII emission and the aperture effects on the detection of WR features.
We study influence by models of inter-stellar medium (ISM) on properties of galaxies in cosmological simulations. We examine three models widely used in previous studies. The ISM models impose different equations of state on dense gas. Using zoom-in simulations, we demonstrate that switching the ISM models can control formation of giant clumps in massive discs at redshifts $z\sim1$--$2$ while their initial conditions and the other settings such as stellar feedback are unchanged. Thus, not only feedback but ISM models can also be responsible for clumpy morphologies of simulated galaxies. We fin…
We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of HII regions within star-forming galaxies M83 and M33. Their emission features are compared with Galactic and extragalactic HII regions, HII-type galaxies, starburst galaxies, and Seyfert/LINER type galaxies. Our main results are as follows: (i) the M33 and M83 HII regions lie in between Seyfert/LINER galaxies and HII-type galaxies in the 7.7/11.3 - 6.2/11.3 plane, while the different sub-samples exhibiting different 7.7/6.2 ratios; (ii) Using the NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic database, we demonstrate that the 6.2/7.7 ratio does not effectively track PA…
We discuss the implications of assuming different star formation histories (SFH) in the relation between star formation rate (SFR) and mass derived by the spectral energy distribution fitting (SED). Our analysis focuses on a sample of HII galaxies, dwarf starburst galaxies spectroscopically selected through their strong narrow emission lines in SDSS DR13 at z<0.4, cross-matched with photometric catalogs from GALEX, SDSS, UKIDSS and WISE. We modeled and fitted the SEDs with the code CIGALE adopting different descriptions of SFH. By adding information from different independent studies we find t…
A number of giant cometary HII regions (GCH) sheathed inside molecular bow shocks (MBS) are found along spiral arms of the barred galaxy M83. The open cone structure is explained by a model of expanded HII front in a gaseous arm with steep density gradient, and the bow shock is shown to be formed by encounter of an HII region with the supersonic gas flow across the arm. It is suggested that dual-side compression of molecular gas at the bow head between the MBS and GCH enhances star formation along the spiral arms.
We place novel constraints on the cosmokinetic parameters by using a joint analysis of the newest VLT-KMOS HII galaxies (HIIG) with the Supernovae Type Ia (SNIa) Pantheon sample. We combine the latter datasets in order to reconstruct, in a model-independent way, the Hubble diagram to as high redshifts as possible. Using a Gaussian process we derive the basic cosmokinetic parameters and compare them with those of $Λ$CDM. In the case of SNIa, we find that the extracted values of the cosmokinetic parameters are in agreement with the predictions of $Λ$CDM model. Combining SNIa with high redshift t…
Many more supernova remnants (SNRs) are now known in external galaxies than in the Milky Way. Most of these SNRs have been identified using narrow-band imaging, separating SNRs from HII regions on the basis of [SII]:H-alpha ratios that are elevated compared to HII regions. However, the boundary between SNRs and HII regions is not always distinct, especially at low surface brightness. Here we explore velocity structure as a possible criterion for separating SNRs from HII regions, using a sample of well-studied SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as well as a small number of SNRs in the gal…
This review is not a compendium of strong-line methods to derive abundances in giant HII regions. It is mostly intended for readers who wish to use such methods but do not have a solid background on the physics of HII regions. It is also meant to encourage those using abundance results published in the literature to think more thoroughly about the validity of these results.
In this letter we report the discovery of CO fluxes, suggesting very high gas fractions in three disk galaxies seen in the nearby Universe (z ~ 0.1). These galaxies were investigated as part of the DYnamics of Newly Assembled Massive Objects (DYNAMO) survey. High-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging of these objects reveals the presence of large star forming clumps in the bodies of the galaxies, while spatially resolved spectroscopy of redshifted Halpha reveals the presence of high dispersion rotating disks. The internal dynamical state of these galaxies resembles that of disk systems see…
Dust attenuation in galaxies has been extensively studied nearby, however, there are still many unknowns regarding attenuation in distant galaxies. We contribute to this effort using observations of star-forming galaxies in the redshift range z = 0.05-0.15 from the DYNAMO survey. Highly star-forming DYNAMO galaxies share many similar attributes to clumpy, star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Considering integrated Sloan Digital Sky Survey observations, trends between attenuation and other galaxy properties for DYNAMO galaxies are well matched to star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Integ…
Narrow emission-line galaxies can be distinguished in the well-known BPT diagrams through narrow emission line properties. However, there are no boundaries visible to the naked eye between type-2 AGN and HII galaxies in BPT diagrams, besides the extreme dividing lines expected by theoretical photoionization models. Here, based on powerful t-SNE technique applied to the local narrow emission-line galaxies in SDSS DR15, type-2 AGN and HII galaxies can be clearly separated in the t-SNE determined two-dimensional projected map, and then the dividing lines can be mathematically determined in BPT di…
We study the fragmentation of collisional ring galaxies (CRGs) using a linear perturbation analysis that computes the physical conditions of gravitational instability, as determined by the balance of self-gravity of the ring against pressure and Coriolis forces. We adopt our formalism to simulations of CRGs and show that the analysis can accurately characterise the stability and onset of fragmentation, although the linear theory appears to under-predict the number of fragments of an unstable CRG by a factor of 2. In addition, since the orthodox `density-wave' model is inapplicable to such self…
The central structure in three of the brightest unlensed z=3-4 submillimeter galaxies are investigated through 0.015" - 0.05" (120 -- 360~pc) 860 micron continuum images obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The distribution in the central kpc in AzTEC1 and AzTEC8 are extremely complex, and they are composed of multiple ~200 pc clumps. AzTEC4 consists of two sources that are separated by ~1.5 kpc, indicating a mid-stage merger. The peak star formation rate densities in the central clumps are ~300 - 3000 Msun/yr/kpc^2, suggesting regions with extreme star forma…
We present the results of spectroscopy campaigns for planetary nebula candidates, where we have identified four objects as Seyfert galaxies. All observations have been carried out by a group of French amateur astronomers. During the campaigns at the Cote d'Azur observatory at Calern (France), four HII galaxies could be identified. Using the naming convention of our campaign, these objects are (1) App 1 (RA: 22h 49m 20.23s, DEC: +46°07{\arcmin}37.17{\arcsec}), (2) Pre 21 (RA: 18h 04m 19.62s, DEC: +00°08{\arcmin}04.96{\arcsec}), (3) Pre 24 (RA: 04h 25m 53.63s, DEC: +39°49{\arcmin}19.69{\arcsec})…
Observations of high redshift galaxies have revealed a multitude of large clumpy rapidly star-forming galaxies. Their formation scenario and their link to present day spirals is still unknown. In this Letter we perform adaptive mesh refinement simulations of disk formation in a cosmological context that are unrivalled in terms of mass and spatial resolution. We find that the so called "chain-galaxies" and "clump-clusters" are a natural outcome of early epochs of enhanced gas accretion from cold dense streams as well as tidally and ram-pressured stripped material from minor mergers and satellit…
We have observed 10 interacting galaxy pairs using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GH$α$FaS (Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system) on the $4.2\rm{m}$ William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma. We present here the H$α$ surface brightness, velocity and velocity dispersion maps for the 10 systems we have not previously observed using this technique, as well as the physical properties (sizes, H$α$ luminosities and velocity dispersion) of 1259 HII regions from the full sample. We also derive the physical properties of 1054 HII regions in a sample of 28 isola…
We measure the stellar specific angular momentum jstar=Jstar/Mstar in four nearby (z~0.1) disk galaxies that have stellar masses Mstar near the break M* of the galaxy mass function, but look like typical star-forming disks at z~2 in terms of their low stability (Q~1), clumpiness, high ionized gas dispersion (40-50 km/s), high molecular gas fraction (20-30%) and rapid star formation (~20 Msun/yr). Combining high-resolution (Keck-OSIRIS) and large-radius (Gemini-GMOS) spectroscopic maps, only available at low z, we discover that these targets have about three times less stellar angular momentum …
Giant, star-forming clumps are a common feature prevalent amongst high-redshift star-forming galaxies and play a critical role in shaping their chaotic morphologies and yet, their nature and role in galaxy evolution remains to be fully understood. A majority of the effort to study clumps has been focused at high redshifts, and local clump studies have often suffered from small sample sizes. In this work, we present an analysis of clump properties in the local universe, and for the first time, performed with a statistically significant sample. With the help of the citizen science-powered Galaxy…
Gas infall and outflow are critical for determining the star formation rate and chemical evolution of galaxies but direct measurements of gas flows are diffcult to make. Young massive stars and HII regions in the halos of galaxies are potential tracers for accretion and/or outflows of gas. Gas phase abundances of three HII regions in the lower halos of the edge-on galaxies NGC 3628 and NGC 4522 are determined by analysing optical long-slit spectra. The observed regions have projected distances to the midplane of their host from 1.4 to 3 kpc. With the measured flux densities of the optical nebu…
At high redshift, starburst galaxies present irregular morphologies, with 10-20\%\ of their star formation occurring in giant clumps. These clumpy galaxies are considered to be the progenitors of local disk galaxies. To understand the properties of starbursts at intermediate and low redshift, it is fundamental to track their evolution and possible link with the systems at higher $z$. We present an extensive, systematic, and multi-band search and analysis of the starburst galaxies at redshift ($0 < z < 0.5$) in the COSMOS field, as well as detailed characteristics of their star-forming clumps b…
Lyman-Alpha (Ly$α$) is the strongest emission line in the Universe and is frequently used to detect and study the most distant galaxies. Because Lya is a resonant line, photons typically scatter prior to escaping; this scattering process complicates the interpretation of Ly$α$ spectra, but also encodes a wealth of information about the structure and kinematics of neutral gas in the galaxy. Modeling the Ly$α$ line therefore allows us to study tiny-scale features of the gas, even in the most distant galaxies. Curiously, observed Ly$α$ spectra can be modeled successfully with very simple, homogen…
We present a UV to mid-IR spectral energy distribution study of a large sample of SDSS DR13 HII galaxies. These are selected as starburst (EW(H$α) > 50$Å) and for their high excitation locus in the upper-left region of the BPT diagram. Their photometry was derived from the cross-matched GALEX, SDSS, UKDISS and WISE catalogues. We have used CIGALE modelling and SED fitting routine with the parametrization of a three burst star formation history, and a comprehensive analysis of all other model parameters. We have been able to estimate the contribution of the underlying old stellar population to …
We study the spatially resolved stellar kinematics of two star-forming galaxies at z = 0.1 from the larger DYnamics of Newly Assembled Massive Objects (DYNAMO) sample. These galaxies, which have been characterized by high levels of star formation and large ionized gas velocity dispersions, are considered possible analogs to high-redshift clumpy disks. They were observed using the GMOS instrument in integral field spectroscopy (IFS) mode at the Gemini Observatory with high spectral resolution (R=5400, equivalent to 24 km/s at the observed wavelengths) and 6 hour exposure times in order to measu…
Nearby, low-metallicity dwarf starburst galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) offer the best local analogs to study the early evolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes (BHs). Here we present a detailed multi-wavelength investigation of star formation and BH activity in the low-metallicity dwarf-dwarf galaxy merger Mrk 709. Using Hubble Space Telescope H$α$ and continuum imaging combined with Keck spectroscopy, we determine that the two dwarf galaxies are likely in the early stages of a merger (i.e., their first pass) and discover a spectacular $\sim 10$ kpc-long string …
We study the morphology and kinematics of the ionization state of the gas in four 'green valley' early-type galaxies at different stages of their transition from a 'blue cloud' of star-forming galaxies to the sequence of passive evolution. The previous HI mapping of the considered sample reveals a spatial offset between the cold gas reservoirs and stellar discs depending on the post-starburst age. Consideration of the ionized-gas properties is essential to understand the role of various feedback processes in star formation quenching. We performed long-slit and 3D optical spectroscopic observat…
(abridged) Quantifying the ISM porosity to ionizing photons in nearby galaxies may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to Lyman Continuum photons leakage from galaxies. Primitive galaxies with low metal and dust content have been shown to host a more patchy and porous ISM than their high-metallicity counterparts. To what extent this peculiar structure contributes to the leakage of ionizing photons remains to be quantitatively studied. To address these questions we build a refined grid of models including density-bounded regions and a possible contribution of an X-ray source. Us…
Here we present the first results from the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7) which aims to investigate the physics of ~140 radio-detected southern active Galaxies with z<0.02 through Integral Field Spectroscopy using the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS). This instrument provides data cubes of the central 38 x 25 arc sec. of the target galaxies in the waveband 340-710nm with the unusually high resolution of R=7000 in the red (530-710nm), and R=3000 in the blue (340-560nm). These data provide the morphology, kinematics and the excitation structure of the extended n…
We use an unprecedented sample of about 23,000 HII regions detected at an average physical resolution of 67pc in the PHANGS-MUSE sample to study the extragalactic HII region Ha luminosity function (LF). Our observations probe the star-forming disk of 19 nearby spiral galaxies with low inclination and located close to the star formation main sequence at z=0. The mean LF slope $α$ in our sample is =1.73 with a $σ$ of 0.15. We find that $α$ decreases with the galaxy's star formation rate surface density and argue that this is driven by an enhanced clustering of young stars at high gas surface den…
We fit theoretical models to the emission-line spectra of 2766 Seyfert galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The model line fluxes are derived by `mixing' photoionization model predictions of active galactic nucleus (AGN) narrow line region (NLR) emission and HII region emission. The observed line fluxes in each spectrum were directly compared to the grid of mixed models using the Bayesian parameter estimation code NebulaBayes, thereby measuring the degree of mixing in each spectrum for the first time. We find that the majority of the Balmer line emission in the majority of Seyfer…
We utilize zoom-in cosmological simulations to study the nature of violent disc instability (VDI) in clumpy galaxies at high redshift, $z=1$--$5$. Our simulated galaxies are not in the ideal state assumed in Toomre instability, of linear fluctuations in an isolated, uniform, rotating disk. There, instability is characterised by a $Q$ parameter below unity, and lower when the disk is thick. Instead, the high-redshift discs are highly perturbed. Over long periods they consist of non-linear perturbations, compact massive clumps and extended structures, with new clumps forming in inter-clump regio…
