We say that an unordered rooted labeled forest avoids the pattern $π\in\mathcal{S}_n$ if the sequence obtained from the labels along the path from the root to any vertex does not contain a subsequence that is in the same relative order as $π$. We enumerate several classes of forests that avoid certain sets of permutations, including the set of unimodal forests, via bijections with set partitions with certain properties. We also define and investigate an analog of Wilf-equivalence for forests.
In this brief note a straightforward combinatorial proof for an identity directly connecting rooted forests and unordered set partitions is provided. Furthermore, references that put this type of identity in the context of forest volumes and multinomial identities are given.
For a graph G, the generating function of rooted forests, counted by the number of connected components, can be expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of the graph Laplacian. We generalize this result from graphs to cell complexes of arbitrary dimension. This requires generalizing the notion of rooted forest to higher dimension. We also introduce orientations of higher dimensional rooted trees and forests. These orientations are discrete vector fields which lead to open questions concerning expressing homological quantities combinatorially.
We enumerate injectively $k$-colored rooted forests with a given number of vertices of each color and a given sequence of root colors. We obtain from this result some new multi-parameter distributions of Fuss-Catalan numbers. As an additional application we enumerate triangulations of regular convex polygons according to their proper 3-coloring type.
We show that families of action graphs, with initial graphs which are linear of varying length, give rise to self-convolutions of the Catalan sequence. We prove this result via a comparison with planar rooted forests with a fixed number of trees.
We describe a bijection between $(k,k)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$ and certain rooted plane forests with $n(k+1)+2$ vertices. This yields a recursion which allows us to analytically enumerate the number of large $(k,r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$, solving an open question posed by An, Jung, and Kim. Furthermore, we generalize the concept of $(k,r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths to $(k,S)$-Fuss-Schröder paths, in which $r$ can take any value in a given set $S$, and enumerate these paths as well.
Trees or rooted trees have been generously studied in the literature. A forest is a set of trees or rooted trees. Here we give recurrence relations between the number of some kind of rooted forest with $k$ roots and that with $k+1$ roots on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Classical formulas for counting various trees such as rooted trees, bipartite trees, tripartite trees, plane trees, $k$-ary plane trees, $k$-edge colored trees follow immediately from our recursive relations.
In this paper, we develop a new method to produce explicit formulas for the number $f_{G}(n)$ of rooted spanning forests in the circulant graphs $ G=C_{n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k)$ and $ G=C_{2n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k,n).$ These formulas are expressed through Chebyshev polynomials. We prove that in both cases the number of rooted spanning forests can be represented in the form $f_{G}(n)=p\,a(n)^2,$ where $a(n)$ is an integer sequence and $p$ is a prescribed natural number depending on the parity of $n$. Finally, we find an asymptotic formula for $f_{G}(n)$ through the Mahler measure of the associated …
Following Anders and Archer, we say that an unordered rooted labeled forest avoids the pattern $σ\in\mathcal{S}_k$ if in each tree, each sequence of labels along the shortest path from the root to a vertex does not contain a subsequence with the same relative order as $σ$. For each permutation $σ\in\mathcal{S}_{k-2}$, we construct a bijection between $n$-vertex forests avoiding $(σ)(k-1)k:=σ(1)\cdotsσ(k-2)(k-1)k$ and $n$-vertex forests avoiding $(σ)k(k-1):=σ(1)\cdotsσ(k-2)k(k-1)$, giving a common generalization of results of West on permutations and Anders--Archer on forests. We further define…
Let $\mathcal{D}_0:= \{x + iy \ \vert x, y >0\}$, and let $(L, R)$ be a pair of Möbius transformations corresponding to $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{N}_0)$ matrices such that $R(\mathcal{D}_0)$ and $L(\mathcal{D}_0)$ are disjoint. Given such a pair (called a left-right pair), we can construct a directed graph $\mathcal{F}(L, R)$ with vertices $\mathcal{D}_0$ and edges $\{(z, R(z))\}_{z \in \mathcal{D}_0} \cup \{(z, L(z))\}_{z \in \mathcal{D}_0}$, which is a collection of infinite binary trees. We answer two questions of Nathanson by classifying all the pairs of elements of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{N}_…
We define a variation of Stirling permutations, called quasi-Stirling permutations, to be permutations on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ that avoid the patterns 1212 and 2121. Their study is motivated by a known relationship between Stirling permutations and increasing ordered rooted labeled trees. We construct a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the set of ordered rooted labeled trees and investigate pattern avoidance for these permutations.
We consider conjugation action of symmetric group on the semigroup of all partial functions and develop a machinery to investigate character formulas and multiplicities. In particular, we determine nilpotent matrices whose orbit under symmetric group afford the sign representation. Applications to rook theory are offered.

We construct an explicit Hopf algebra isomorphism from the algebra of heap-ordered trees to that of quasi-symmetric functions, generated by formal permutations, which is a lift of the natural projection of the Connes-Kreimer algebra of decorated rooted trees onto the shuffle algebra. This isomorphism gives a universal way of lifting measure-indexed characters of the Connes-Kreimer algebra into measure-indexed characters of the shuffle algebra, already introduced in \cite{Unterberger} in the framework of rough path theory as the so-called Fourier normal ordering algorithm.
Tutte founded the theory of enumeration of planar maps in a series of papers in the 1960s. Rooted non-separable planar maps are in bijection with West-2-stack-sortable permutations, beta(1,0)-trees introduced by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer in 1997, as well as a family of permutations defined by the avoidance of two four letter patterns. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds on the number of multiple-edge-free rooted non-separable planar maps. We also use the bijection between rooted non-separable planar maps and a certain class of permutations, found by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrimss…
Closed-form generating functions for counting one-face rooted hypermaps with a known number of darts by number of vertices and edges is found, using matrix integral expressions relating to the reduced density operator of a bipartite quantum system. A recursion relation for these generating functions is also found. The method for computing similar generating functions for two-face rooted hypermaps by number of vertices and edges is outlined.
By means of a new notion of subforests of an angularly decorated rooted forest, we give a combinatorial construction of a coproduct on the free Rota-Baxter algebra on angularly decorated rooted forests. We show that this coproduct equips the Rota-Baxter algebra with a bialgebra structure and further a Hopf algebra structure.
This paper discusses the enumeration for the total number of all rooted spanning forests of the labeled complete tripartite graph. We enumerate the total number by a combinatorial decomposition.
In this paper, we study the graph polynomial that counts spanning rooted forests f_g of a given graph. This polynomial has a remarkable reciprocity property. We give a new bijective proof for this theorem which has Prufer coding as a special case.
The binomial Eulerian polynomials, introduced by Postnikov, Reiner, and Williams, are $γ$-positive polynomials and can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes. Recently, Athanasiadis studied analogs of these polynomials for colored permutations. In this paper, we generalize them to $\mathbf{s}$-inversion sequences and prove that these new polynomials have only real roots by the method of interlacing polynomials. Three applications of this result are presented. The first one is to prove the real-rootedness of binomial Eulerian polynomials, which confirms a conject…
We prove the conjecture by M. Yip stating that counting genus one partitions by the number of their elements and parts yields, up to a shift of indices, the same array of numbers as counting genus one rooted hypermonopoles. Our proof involves representing each genus one permutation by a four-colored noncrossing partition. This representation may be selected in a unique way for permutations containing no trivial cycles. The conclusion follows from a general generating function formula that holds for any class of permutations that is closed under the removal and reinsertion of trivial cycles. Ou…
The classes of tree permutations and forest permutations were defined by Acan and Hitczenko (2016). We study random permutations of a given length from these classes, and in particular the number of occurrences of a fixed pattern in one of these random permutations. The main results show that the distributions of these numbers are asymptotically normal. The proof uses representations of random tree and forest permutations that enable us to express the number of occurrences of a pattern by a type of $U$-statistics; we then use general limit theorems for the latter.
Recent advances in stochastic PDEs, Hopf algebras of typed trees and integral equations have inspired the study of algebraic structures with replicating operations. To understand their algebraic and combinatorial nature, we first use rooted forests with multiple decoration sets to construct free Hopf algebras with multiple Hochschild 1-cocycle conditions. Applying the universal property of the underlying operated algebras and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we then construct free objects in the category of matching Rota-Baxter algebras which is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebras to…
A loop-augmented forest is a labeled rooted forest with loops on some of its roots. By exploiting an interplay between nilpotent partial functions and labeled rooted forests, we investigate the permutation action of the symmetric group on loop-augmented forests. Furthermore, we describe an extension of the Foulkes' conjecture and prove a special case. Among other important outcomes of our analysis are a complete description of the stabilizer subgroup of an idempotent in the semigroup of partial transformations and a generalization of the (Knuth-Sagan) hook length formula.
The Hopf algebra and the Rota-Baxter algebra are the two algebraic structures underlying the algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization of perturbative quantum field theory. In particular the Hopf algebra of rooted trees serves as the "baby model" of Feynman graphs in their approach and can be characterized by certain universal properties involving a Hochschild 1-cocycle. Decorated rooted trees have also been applied to study Feynman graphs. We will continue the study of universal properties of various spaces of decorated rooted trees with such a 1-cocycle, leading to the conc…
A signed labeled forest is defined as a (plane) forest labeled by {1,2,..., n} along with minus signs associated to some vertices. Signed labeled forests can be viewed as an extension of signed permutations. We define the inversion number, the flag major index and the R-major index on signed labeled forests. They can be considered as type B analogues of the indices for labeled forests introduced by Bjorner and Wachs. The flag major index for signed labeled forests is based on the flag major index on signed permutations introduced by Adin and Roichman, whereas the R-major index for signed label…
Fano Bott manifolds bijectively correspond to signed rooted forests with some equivalence relation. Using this bijective correspondence, we enumerate the isomorphism classes of Fano Bott manifolds and the diffeomorphism classes of indecomposable Fano Bott manifolds. We also observe that the signed rooted forests with the equivalence relation bijectively correspond to rooted triangular cacti.
Björner and Wachs defined a major index for labeled plane forests and showed that it has the same distribution as the number of inversions. We define and study the distributions of a few other natural statistics on labeled forests. Specifically, we introduce the notions of bottom-to-top maxima, cyclic bottom-to-top maxima, sorting index, and cycle minima. Then we show that the pairs (inv, Bt-max), (sor, Cyc), and (maj, Cbt-max) are equidistributed. Our results extend the result of Björner and Wachs and generalize results for permutations. We also introduce analogous statistics for signed label…
Fisher established an explicit correspondence between the 2-dimensional Ising model defined on a graph $G$ and the dimer model defined on a decorated version $\GD$ of this graph \cite{Fisher}. In this paper we explicitly relate the dimer model associated to the critical Ising model and critical cycle rooted spanning forests (CRSFs). This relation is established through characteristic polynomials, whose definition only depends on the respective fundamental domains, and which encode the combinatorics of the model. We first show a matrix-tree type theorem establishing that the dimer characteristi…
Given a general multiset $\mathcal{M}=\{1^{m_1},2^{m_2},\ldots,n^{m_n}\}$, where $i$ appears $m_i$ times, a multipermutation $π$ of $\mathcal{M}$ is called {\em quasi-Stirling}, if it contains no subword of the form $abab$ with $a\neq b$. We designate exactly one entry of $π$, say $k\in \mathcal{M}$, which is not the leftmost entry among all entries with the same value, by underlining it in $π$, and we refer to the pair $(π,k)$ as a quasi-Stirling multipermutation of $\mathcal{M}$ rooted at $k$. By introducing certain vertex and edge labeled trees, we give a new bijective proof of an identity …
We investigate the structure of the two permutation classes defined by the sets of forbidden patterns {1234,2341} and {1243,2314}. By considering how the Hasse graphs of permutations in these classes can be built from a sequence of rooted source graphs, we determine their algebraic generating functions. Our approach is similar to that of "adding a slice", used previously to enumerate various classes of polyominoes and other combinatorial structures. To solve the relevant functional equations, we make extensive use of the kernel method.
Consider the following partial "sorting algorithm" on permutations: take the first entry of the permutation in one-line notation and insert it into the position of its own value. Continue until the first entry is 1. This process imposes a forest structure on the set of all permutations of size $n$, where the roots are the permutations starting with 1 and the leaves are derangements. Viewing the process in the opposite direction towards the leaves, one picks a fixed point and moves it to the beginning. Despite its simplicity, this "fixed point forest" exhibits a rich structure. In this paper, w…
We give an explicit combinatorial proof of a weighted version of strong log-concavity for the generating polynomial of increasing spanning forests of a finite simple graph equipped with a total ordering of the vertices. In contrast to similar proofs in the literature, our injection is local in the sense that it proceeds by moving a single edge from one forest to the other. In the particular case of the complete graph, this gives a new combinatorial proof of log-concavity of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind where a pair of permutations is transformed into a new pair by breaking a sin…
We propose the reliability constrained k-rooted minimum spanning forest, a relevant optimization problem whose aim is to find a k-rooted minimum cost forest that connects given customers to a number of supply vertices, in such a way that a minimum required reliability on each path between a customer and a supply vertex is satisfied and the cost is a minimum. The reliability of an edge is the probability that no failure occurs on that edge, whereas the reliability of a path is the product of the reliabilities of the edges in such path. The problem has relevant applications in the design of netw…
