We investigate deformations of functions on affine space, deformations in which the changes specialize to a distinguished point in the zero-locus of the original function. Such deformations enable us to obtain nice results on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of the original function.
We construct a differential graded Lie algebra $\fg$ controlling the Poisson deformations of an affine Poisson variety. We analyse $\fg$ in the case of affine Gorenstein toric Poisson varieties. Moreover, explicit description of the second and third Hochschild cohomology groups is given for three-dimensional affine Gorenstein toric varieties.
We shall prove that the Poisson deformation functor of an affine (singular) symplectic variety is unobstructed. As a corollary, we prove the following result. Theorem: For an affine symplectic variety $X$ with a good $C^*$-action (where its natural Poisson structure is positively weighted), the following are equivalent (1) $X$ has a crepant projective resolution. (2) $X$ has a smoothing by a Poisson deformation.
We consider log deformations of affine surfaces with fibrations by the affine lines. Such a fibration is of affine type (resp. of complete type) if the base curve of the fibration is an affine curve (resp. a complete curve). The case of affine type is mainly treated in the article.
A smooth family $φ:\mathcal V\to S$ of surfaces will be called {\em completable} if there is a logarithmic deformation $(\bar {\mathcal V},{\mathcal D})$ over $S$ so that ${\mathcal V}=\bar{\mathcal V}\backslash {\mathcal D}$. Two smooth surfaces $V$ and $V'$ are said to be deformations of each other if there is a completable flat family ${\mathcal V}\to S$ of smooth surfaces over a connected base so that $V$ and $V'$ are fibers over suitable points $s,s'\in S$. This relation generates an equivalence relation called {\em deformation equivalence}. In this paper we give a complete combinatorial …
We prove that the invariant Hilbert scheme parametrising the equivariant deformations of the affine multicone over a flag variety is, under certain hypotheses, an affine space. The proof is based on the construction of a wonderful variety in a fixed multiprojective space.
We investigate the relation between the Hodge theory of a smooth subcanonical $n$-dimensional projective variety $X$ and the deformation theory of the affine cone $A_X$ over $X$. We start by identifying $H^{n-1,1}_{\mathrm{prim}}(X)$ as a distinguished graded component of the module of first order deformations of $A_X$, and later on we show how to identify the whole primitive cohomology of $X$ as a distinguished graded component of the Hochschild cohomology module of the punctured affine cone over $X$. In the particular case of a projective smooth hypersurface $X$ we recover Griffiths' isomorp…
For an affine toric variety $\mathrm{Spec}(A)$, we give a convex geometric description of the Hodge decomposition of its Hochschild cohomology. Under certain assumptions we compute the dimensions of the Hodge summands $T^1_{(i)}(A)$, generalizing the existing results about the Andre-Quillen cohomology group $T^1_{(1)}(A)$. We prove that every Poisson structure on a possibly singular affine toric variety can be quantized in the sense of deformation quantization.
We extend the Altmann--Mavlyutov construction of homogeneous deformations of affine toric varieties to the case of toric pairs $(X, \partial X)$, where $X$ is an affine or projective toric variety and $\partial X$ is its toric boundary. As an application, we generalise a result due to Ilten to the case of Fano toric pairs.
We compare deformations of algebras to deformations of schemes in the setting of invariant theory. Our results generalize comparison theorems of Schlessinger and the second author for projective schemes. We consider deformations (abstract and embedded) of a scheme $X$ which is a good quotient of a quasi-affine scheme $X^\prime$ by a linearly reductive group $G$ and compare them to invariant deformations of an affine $G$-scheme containing $X^\prime$ as an open invariant subset. The main theorems give conditions for when the comparison morphisms are smooth or isomorphisms.
A large family of periodic planar non-linear bimode metamaterials are constructed from rigid bars and pivots. They are affine materials in the sense that their macroscopic deformations are only affine deformations: at large distances any deformation must be close to an affine deformation. Bimode means that the paths of all possible deformations of Bravais lattices that preserve the periodicity of the lattice lie on a two dimensional surface in the three dimensional space of invariants describing the deformation (excluding translations and rotations). By adding two actuators inside a single mic…
We study deformations of affine toric varieties. The entire deformation theory of these singularities is encoded by the so-called versal deformation. The main goal of our paper is to construct the homogeneous part of some degree -R of this, i.e. a maximal deformation with prescribed tangent space T^1(-R) for a given character R. To this aim we use the polyhedron obtained by cutting the rational cone defining the affine singularity with the hyperplane defined by [R=1]. Under some length assumptions on the edges of this polyhedron, we provide the versal deformation for primitive degrees R.

We study analytic deformations of holomorphic foliations given by homogeneous integrable one-forms in the complex affine space $\mathbb C^n$. The deformation is supposed to be of first order (order one in the parameter). We also assume that the deformation is given by homogeneous polynomial one-forms. The deformation takes place in the affine space since we are not assuming that the foliations descent to the projective space. We describe the space of such deformations in three main situations: (1) the given foliation is given by the level hypersurfaces of a homogeneous polynomial. (2) the foli…
This is a continuation of math.AG/0609741. Let Y be an affine symplectic variety with a C^*-action with positive weights, and let π: X -> Y be its crepant resolution. Then πinduces a natural map PDef(X) -> PDef(Y) of Kuranishi spaces for the Poisson deformations of X and Y. In the Part I, we proved that PDef(X) and PDef(Y) are both non-singular, and this map is a finite surjective map. In this paper (Part II), we prove that it is a Galois covering. Markman already obtained a similar result in the compact case, which was a motivation of this paper. As an application, we shall construct explicit…
Let X be a smooth affine algebraic variety over a field K of characteristic 0, and let R be a complete parameter K-algebra (e.g. R = K[[h]]). We consider associative (resp. Poisson) R-deformations of the structure sheaf O_X. The set of R-deformations has a crossed groupoid (i.e. strict 2-groupoid) structure. Our main result is that there is a canonical equivalence of crossed groupoids from the Deligne crossed groupoid of normalized polydifferential operators (resp. polyderivations) of X to the crossed groupoid of associative (resp. Poisson) R-deformations of O_X. The proof relies on a careful …
Bounded local G-shtukas are function field analogs for p-divisible groups with extra structure. We describe their deformations and moduli spaces. The latter are analogous to Rapoport-Zink spaces for p-divisible groups. The underlying schemes of these moduli spaces are affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. For basic Newton polygons the closed Newton stratum in the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka is isomorphic to the completion of a corresponding affine Deligne-Lusztig variety in that point. This yields bounds on the dimension and proves equidimensionality of the basic affine Deligne-Luszt…
Let π: Y -> X be a crepant projective resolution of an affine symplectic variety X with a good C^*-action. We interpret the second cohomology H^2(Y, C) in two ways. First, H^2(Y, C) is the Picard group of Y tensorised with C. By the ample cones of different crepant resolutions of X, there is a natural chamber structure in H^2(Y, C). The second interpretation of H^2(Y, C) is the base space of the universal Poisson deformation $\mathcal Y$ of Y. Let D \subset H^2(Y, C) be the locus where the corresponding Poisson varieties are not affine. Then D is the union of finite number of hyperplanes, whic…
We study certain nearby cycles sheaves on an affine flag manifold which arise naturally in the Beilinson-Gaitsgory deformation of the affine flag manifold to the affine Grassmannian. We study the multiplicity functions we introduced in an earlier paper, which encode the data of the Jordan-Hoelder series. We prove the multiplicity functions are polynomials in q, and we give a sharp bound for their degrees. Our results apply as well to the nearby cycles in the p-adic deformation of Laumon-Haines-Ngo, and also to Wakimoto sheaves.
We give a construction of an affine Hecke algebra associated to any Coxeter group acting on an abelian variety by reflections; in the case of an affine Weyl group, the result is an elliptic analogue of the usual double affine Hecke algebra. As an application, we use a variant of the $\tilde{C}_n$ version of the construction to construct a flat noncommutative deformation of the $n$th symmetric power of any rational surface with a smooth anticanonical curve, and give a further construction which conjecturally is a corresponding deformation of the Hilbert scheme of points.
We study local G-shtukas with level structure over a base scheme whose Newton polygons are constant on the base. We show that after a finite base change and after passing to an étale covering, such a local G-shtuka is isogenous to a completely slope divisible one, generalizing corresponding results for p-divisible groups by Oort and Zink. As an application we establish a product structure up to finite morphism on the closed Newton stratum of the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka, similarly to Oort's foliations for p-divisible groups and abelian varieties. This also yields bounds on the…
We provide a method to compute the dimension of the tangent space to the global infinitesimal deformation functor of a curve together with a subgroup of the group of automorphisms. The computational techniques we developed are applied to several examples including Fermat curves, $p$-cyclic covers of the affine line and to Lehr-Matignon curves.
We give the definitions of affine algebraic supervariety and affine algebraic group through the functor of points and we relate them to the other definitions present in the literature. We study in detail the algebraic supergroup $SL(m|n)$ and give explicitly the Hopf algebra structure of the algebra representing its functor of points. At the end we give also the quantization of $SL(m|n)$ together with its coactions on suitable quantum spaces according to Manin's philosophy.
Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $Λ_0, \ldots, Λ_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these oper…
A complete characterization is given of the possible macroscopic deformations of periodic nonlinear affine unimode metamaterials constructed from rigid bars and pivots. The materials are affine in the sense that their macroscopic deformations can only be affine deformations: on a local level the deformation may vary from cell to cell. Unimode means that macroscopically the material can only deform along a one dimensional trajectory in the six dimensional space of invariants describing the deformation (excluding translations and rotations). We show by explicit construction that any continuous t…
We study Abhyankar valuations of excellent equicharacteristic local domains with an algebraically closed residue field. For zero dimensional valuations we prove that whenever the ring is complete and the semigroup of values taken by the valuation is finitely generated (which implies that the valuation is Abhyankar) the valuation can be uniformized in an embedded way by a birational map which is monomial with respect to a suitable system of generators of the maximal ideal. We prove that conversely if a valuation is Abhyankar after a birational modification and localization at the point picked b…
Let D be a simply laced Dynkin diagram of rank r whose affinization has the shape of a star (i.e., D4,E6,E7,E8). To such a diagram one can attach a group G whose generators correspond to the legs of the affinization, have orders equal to the leg lengths plus 1, and the product of the generators is 1. The group G is then a 2-dimensional crystallographic group: G=Z_l\ltimes Z^2, where l is 2,3,4, and 6, respectively. In this paper, we define a flat deformation H(t,q) of the group algebra C[G] of this group, by replacing the relations saying that the generators have prescribed orders by their def…
We give a proof of Yekutieli's global algebraic deformation quantization result which does not rely on the choice of local sections of the bundle of affine coordinate systems. Instead we use an argument inspired by algebraic De Rham cohomology.
We prove that any flat G-bundle, where G is a complex connected reductive algebraic group, on the punctured disc admits the structure of an oper. This result is important in the local geometric Langlands correspondence proposed in arXiv:math/0508382. Our proof uses certain deformations of the affine Springer fibers which could be of independent interest. As a byproduct, we construct representations of affine Weyl groups on the homology of these deformations generalizing representations constructed by Lusztig.
We construct algebraic-geometric families of genus one (i.e. elliptic) current and affine Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. These families deform the classical current, respectively affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The construction is induced by the geometric process of degenerating the elliptic curve to singular cubics. If the finite-dimensional Lie algebra defining the infinite dimensional current algebra is simple then, even if restricted to local families, the constructed families are non-equivalent to the trivial family. In particular, we show that the current algebra is geometrically…
We analyze the question of which motivic homotopy types admit smooth schemes as representatives. We show that given a pointed smooth affine scheme $X$ and an embedding into affine space, the affine deformation space of the embedding gives a model for the ${\mathbb P}^1$ suspension of $X$; we also analyze a host of variations on this observation. Our approach yields many examples of ${\mathbb A}^1$-$(n-1)$-connected smooth affine $2n$-folds and strictly quasi-affine ${\mathbb A}^1$-contractible smooth schemes.
