Canard-induced phenomena have been extensively studied in the last three decades, both from the mathematical and from the application viewpoints. Canards in slow-fast systems with (at least) two slow variables, especially near folded-node singularities, give an essential generating mechanism for Mixed-Mode oscillations (MMOs) in the framework of smooth multiple timescale systems. There is a wealth of literature on such slow-fast dynamical systems and many models displaying canard-induced MMOs, in particular in neuroscience. In parallel, since the late 1990s several papers have shown that the canard phenomenon can be faithfully reproduced with piecewise-linear (PWL) systems in two dimensions although very few results are available in the three-dimensional case. The present paper aims to bridge this gap by analysing canonical PWL systems that display folded singularities, primary and secondary canards, with a similar control of the maximal winding number as in the smooth case. We also show that the singular phase portraits are compatible in both frameworks. Finally, we show on an example how to construct a (linear) global return and obtain robust PWL MMOs.
On the Existence of and Relationship between Canards and Torus Canards in Forced Slow/Fast Systems
Nonlinear Sci. 26:405- 451,2015)。
The aim of this work is to propose an alternative method for determining the condition of existence of "canard solutions" for three and four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with only one fast variable in the folded saddle case. This method enables to state a unique generic condition for the existence of "canard solutions" for such three and four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems which is based on the stability of folded singularities of the normalized slow dynamics deduced from a well-known property of linear algebra. This unique generic condition is perfectly identical to that…
Canard cycles are periodic orbits that appear as special solutions of fast-slow systems (or singularly perturbed Ordinary Differential Equations). It is well known that canard cycles are difficult to detect, hard to reproduce numerically, and that they are sensible to exponentially small changes in parameters. In this paper we combine techniques from geometric singular perturbation theory, the blow-up method, and control theory, to design controllers that stabilize canard cycles of planar fast-slow systems with a folded critical manifold. As an application, we propose a controller that produce…
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
In this paper, we extend the slow divergence-integral from slow-fast systems, due to De Maesschalck, Dumortier and Roussarie, to smooth systems that limit onto piecewise smooth ones as $ε\rightarrow 0$. In slow-fast systems, the slow divergence-integral is an integral of the divergence along a canard cycle with respect to the slow time and it has proven very useful in obtaining good lower and upper bounds of limit cycles in planar polynomial systems. In this paper, our slow divergence-integral is based upon integration along a generalized canard cycle for a piecewise smooth two-fold bifurcatio…
In this paper, we revisit the folded node and the bifurcations of secondary canards at resonances $μ\in \mathbb N$. In particular, we prove for the first time that pitchfork bifurcations occur at all even values of $μ$. Our approach relies on a time-reversible version of the Melnikov approach in \cite{wechselberger2002a}, used in \cite{wechselberger_existence_2005} to prove the transcritical bifurcations for all odd values of $μ$. It is known that the secondary canards produced by the transcritical and the pitchfork bifurcations only reach the Fenichel slow manifolds on one side of each transc…
Mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) are complex oscillatory patterns in which large-amplitude relaxation oscillations (LAOs) alternate with small-amplitude oscillations (SAOs). MMOs are found in singularly perturbed systems of ordinary differential equations of slow-fast type, and are typically related to the presence of so-called folded singularities and the corresponding canard trajectories in such systems. Here, we introduce a canonical family of three-dimensional slow-fast systems that exhibit MMOs which are induced by relaxation-type dynamics, and which are hence based on a "jump mechanism", r…
In the context of a spatially extended model for the electrical activity in a pituitary lactotroph cell line, we establish that two delayed bifurcation phenomena from ODEs ---folded node canards and slow passage through Hopf bifurcations--- persist in the presence of diffusion. For canards, the single cell (ODE) model exhibits canard-induced bursting. Numerical simulations of the PDE reveal rich spatio-temporal canard dynamics, and the transitions between different bursts are mediated by spatio-temporal maximal canards. The ODE model also exhibits delayed loss of stability due to slow passage …
In a previous paper we have proposed a new method for proving the existence of "canard solutions" for three and four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with only one fast variable which improves the methods used until now. The aim of this work is to extend this method to the case of four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with two slow and two fast variables. This method enables to state a unique generic condition for the existence of "canard solutions" for such four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems which is based on the stability of folded singularities (pseudo singular po…
We study a class of planar integrate and fire (IF) models called adaptive integrate and fire (AIF) models, which possesses an adaptation variable on top of membrane potential, and whose subthreshold dynamics is piecewise linear (PWL). These AIF models therefore have two reset conditions, which enable bursting dynamics to emerge for suitable parameter values. Such models can be thought of as hybrid dynamical systems. We consider a particular slow dynamics within AIF models and prove the existence of bursting cycles with $N$ resets, for any integer $N$. Furthermore, we study the transition betwe…
The limiting slow dynamics of slow-fast, piecewise-linear, continuous systems of ODEs occurs on critical manifolds that are piecewise-linear. At points of non-differentiability, such manifolds are not normally hyperbolic and so the fundamental results of geometric singular perturbation theory do not apply. In this paper it is shown that if the critical manifold is globally stable then the system is forward invariant in a neighbourhood of the critical manifold. It follows that in this neighbourhood the dynamics is given by a regular perturbation of the dynamics on the critical manifold and so d…
