We derive analytical expressions for the coherence in the onset of modulation instability, in excellent agreement with thorough numerical simulations. As usual, we start by a linear perturbation analysis, where broadband noise is added to a continuous wave (CW) pump; then, we investigate the effect of adding a deterministic seed to the CW pump, a case of singular interest as it is commonly encountered in parametric amplification schemes. Results for the dependence of coherence on parameters such as fiber type, pump power, propagated distance, seed signal-to-noise ratio are presented. Finally, we show the importance of including higher-order linear and nonlinear dispersion when dealing with generation in longer wavelength regions (mid IR). We believe these results to be of relevance when applied to the analysis of the coherence properties of supercontinua generated from CW pumps.
In optical second harmonic generation with normal dispersion, the virtually infinite bandwidth of the unbounded, hyperbolic, modulational instability leads to quenching of spatial multi-soliton formation and to the occurrence of a catastrophic spatio-temporal break-up when an extended beam is let to interact with an extremely weak external noise with coherence time much shorter than that of the pump.
The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby signific…

Recently, the self-modulation scheme of a weakly pre-bunched electron beam has been proposed [Yan et al., Physical Review Letters 126, 084801 (2021)], which is of great promise for high-repetition-rate seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), such as high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG). In this paper, the self-modulation scheme is systematically analyzed and optimized, and further experiments in which the self-modulator is resonant at the second harmonic of the seed laser are conducted. The three-dimensional numerical simulations show that the required seed laser intensity in the self-modulation s…
We experimentaly investigate higher-order seeded modulation instability in an optical fiber experiment. The recirculating loop configuration with round-trip losses compensation enables the observation in single-shot of the spatio-temporal evolution of an initially modulated continuous field revealing intricate yet deterministic dynamics. By tuning the modulation period, a continuous transition between perfectly coherent and purely noise-driven dynamics is observed that we characterise by means of a statistical study.
We investigate the evolution of coherence property of noise-seeded Stokes wave in short (< 1 ps) and long pulse (> 1 ps) regimes. Nonlinear equations expressing the evolution of pump and Stokes wave are solved numerically for both the regions. The simulations include quantum noise by incorporating noise seed in the pump field where one photon per mode with random phase. The spectral phase fluctuations of the Stokes wave for both the regions, are characterized by performing multiple simulations and finally, the degrees of first-order mutual coherence are calculated as a function of wavelength f…
We present detailed experimental study on noise-seeded intermodal modulation instability (IM-MI) in normal dispersion region of a conventional step-index fiber. The sharp refractive index contrast between core and cladding leads to large group velocity mismatch between the spatial modes, coaxing to efficient IM-MI and generation of multiple spectral peaks along with Raman peaks. Evolution of the spectrum with pump powers and fiber lengths are observed. Experimental findings are well supported with the theoretical framework based on bimodal-MI model considering the distinct dispersion parameter…
I study how pulse to pulse phase coherence in a pulse train can survive super-broadening by extreme self phase modulation (SPM). Such pulse trains have been used in phase self-stabilizing schemes as an alternative to using a feedback process. However, such super-broadened pulses have undergone considerable distortion, and it is far from obvious that they necessarily retain any useful phase information. I propose measures of phase coherence (i.e. supercontinuum coherence) applicable to such pulse trains, and use them to analyze numerical simulations comparable to self-stabilization experiments.
A new approach to measure the second order correlation function $g^{(2)}$ and the coherence time was investigated. The $g^{(2)}$ was calculated from the photon pair time interval distribution by direct numerical self-convolution with the high order correction. The accuracy of this method was examined using an optical fiber based Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometer with a pseudo-thermal light source. We found that the significance of the high order correction is related to the factor $\bar{I}τ_{c}$, which is the overlapping of the photon wave packets. A novel technique was also demonstrated to m…
The degree of optical spatial coherence -a fundamental property of light that describes the mutual correlations between fluctuating electromagnetic fields- has proven challenging to control at the micrometer scale. Here we employ surface plasmon polaritons -evanescent waves excited on both surfaces of a thin metal film- as a means to entangle the random fluctuations of the incident electromagnetic fields at the slit locations of a Young's double-slit interferometer. Strong tunability of the complex degree of spatial coherence of light is achieved by finely varying the separation distance betwe…
We present both theoretical description and experimental observation of the modulation instability process and related rogue breathers in the case of stationary periodic background waves, namely cnoidal and dnoidal envelopes. Despite being well-known solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the stability of such background waves has remained unexplored experimentally until now, unlike the fundamental plane wave. By means of two experimental setups, namely, in nonlinear optics and hydrodynamics, we report on quantitative measurements of spontaneous modulation instability gain seeded by …
Backward stimulated Raman scattering in gases provides a promising route to compression and amplification of a Stokes seed-pulse by counter-propagating against a pump-pulse, as has been already demonstrated in various platforms, mainly in free-space. However, the dynamics governing this process when seeded by noise has not yet been investigated in a fully controllable collinear environment. Here we report the first unambiguous observation of efficient noise-seeded backward stimulated Raman scattering in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. At high gas pressures, when the backw…
In $χ^{(2)}$ three-wave mixing, the noise-seeded spatio--temporal modulational instability has a dramatic impact on the spatial-soliton dynamics, leading to the counterintuitive observation of a soliton with no apparent participation of the high-frequency field in the process.
Phase noise can be modulated onto the output of a laser with an electro-optic phase modulator (EOM) to create a highly incoherent broadened source with low intensity noise. This technique leaves a small but finite fraction of the coherent carrier power that can be highly detrimental in applications requiring incoherent light. This paper shows that the carrier suppression in a laser broadened by this technique can be calculated for an arbitrary noise probability density function. The carrier suppression can be varied experimentally by adjusting the noise voltage standard deviation $Gv_σ$ and sa…
We present the first experimental observation of modulation instability of partially spatially incoherent light beams in non-instantaneous nonlinear media. We show that even in such a nonlinear partially coherent system (of weakly-correlated particles) patterns can form spontaneously. Incoherent MI occurs above a specific threshold that depends on the beams' coherence properties (correlation distance), and leads to a periodic train of one-dimensional (1D) filaments. At a higher value of nonlinearity, incoherent MI displays a two-dimensional (2D) instability and leads to self-ordered arrays of …
We investigate the spontaneous growth of noise that accompanies the nonlinear evolution of seeded modulation instability into Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence. Results from the Floquet linear stability analysis of periodic solutions of the three-wave truncation are compared with full numerical solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The predicted initial stage of noise growth is in good agreement with simulations, and is expected to provide further insight in the subsequent dynamics of the field evolution after recurrence breakup.

Modulational instabilities play a key role in a wide range of nonlinear optical phenomena, leading e.g. to the formation of spatial and temporal solitons, rogue waves and chaotic dynamics. Here we experimentally demonstrate the existence of a modulational instability in condensates of cavity polaritons, arising from the strong coupling of cavity photons with quantum well excitons. For this purpose we investigate the spatiotemporal coherence properties of polariton condensates in GaAs-based microcavities under continuous-wave pumping. The chaotic behavior of the instability results in a strongl…
