We classify homogeneous reversible Finsler metrics with positive Flag curvature. We show that if G/H admits a G invariant reversible Finsler metric with positive Flag curvature, then up to a few low dimensional spaces, it also admits a G invariant Riemannian metric with positive sectional curvature. For the exceptions, we do not know if they admit homogeneous Finsler metrics with positive Flag curvature.
If the flag curvature of a Finsler manifold reduces to sectional curvature, then locally either the Finsler metric is Riemannian, or the flag curvature is isotropic.
We investigate projective spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature in $R^n$ and give the complete classification theorems. Furthermore, a new class of Finsler metrics with two parameters on n-dimensional disk are found to have constant negative flag curvature.
We define a Weyl-type curvature tensor of $(1,2)$-type to provide a characterization for Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature. This Weyl-type curvature tensor is projective invariant only to projective factors that are Hamel functions. Based on this aspect we construct new families of projectively related Finsler metrics that have constant flag curvature.
In this paper, we use the flag curvature formula for homogeneous Finsler spaces in our previous work to classify odd dimensional smooth coset spaces admitting positively curved reversible homogeneous Finsler metrics. We will show that the most features of L. Bérard-Bergery's classification results for odd dimensional positively curved Riemannian homogeneous spaces can be generalized to reversible Finsler spaces.
In this paper, first, we give an explicit formula for the flag curvature of a homogeneous Finsler space with generalized $m$-Kropina metric. Then, we show that, under a mild condition, the two definitions of naturally reductive homogeneous Finsler space are equivalent for afore said metric. Finally, we study the flag curvature of naturally reductive homogeneous Finsler spaces with generalized $m$-Kropina metric.
In this paper, we consider a Finsler space with a Randers change of Quartic metric F = $\sqrt[4]{α^4 + β^4} + β$. The conditions for this space to be with reversible geodesics are obtained. Further, we study some geometrical properties of F with reversible geodesics and prove that the Finsler metric F induces a generalized weighted quasi-distance $d_F$ on M.
In this paper we characterize sprays that are metrizable by Finsler functions of constant flag curvature. By solving a particular case of the Finsler metrizability problem we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions that can be used to decide whether or not a given homogeneous system of second order ordinary differential equations represents the Euler-Lagrange equations of a Finsler function of constant flag curvature. The conditions we provide are tensorial equations on the Jacobi endomorphism. We identify the class of homogeneous SODE where the Finsler metrizability is equivalent with…
A Finsler space is said to be geodesically reversible if each oriented geodesic can be reparametrized as a geodesic with the reverse orientation. A reversible Finsler space is geodesically reversible, but the converse need not be true. In this note, building on recent work of LeBrun and Mason, it is shown that a geodesically reversible Finsler metric of constant flag curvature on the 2-sphere is necessarily projectively flat. As a corollary, using a previous result of the author, it is shown that a reversible Finsler metric of constant flag curvature on the 2-sphere is necessarily a Riemannian…
Spherically symmetric metrics form a rich and important class of metrics. Many well-known Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature can be locally expressed as a spherically symmetric metric on R^n. In this paper, we study spherically symmetric metrics with constant Ricci curvature and constant flag curvature.
In this paper, first we derive an explicit formula for the flag curvature of a homogeneous Finsler space with infinite series $(α, β)$-metric and exponential metric. Next, we deduce it for naturally reductive homogeneous Finsler space with the above mentioned metrics.
In this paper we prove that a Finsler metrics has constant flag curvature if and only if the curvature of the induced nonlinear connection satisfies an algebraic identity with respect to some arbitrary second rank tensors. Such algebraic identity appears as an obstruction to the formal integrability of some operators in Finsler geometry, [4,7]. This algebraic characterisation for Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature allows to provide yet another proof for the Finslerian version of Beltrami's Theorem, [2,3].
We show that the results of Foulon (1997 an 2002) and Kim (2007) (independently, Deng and Hou (2007)) about the nonexistence of locally symmetric Finsler metrics of positive or negative flag curvature are in fact local.
In this paper we study spherically symmetric metrics on a symmetric space in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with scalar and constant flag curvature and we also obtain families of this type of metrics. Many explicit examples are provided for Douglas metrics with scalar and constant flag curvature. Furthermore, new examples of projectively flat Finsler metrics are given. We also provide a family of spherically symmetric Finsler metrics which are not of Douglas type.
In his book "Differential Geometry of Spray and Finsler spaces", page 177, Zhongmin Shen asks "wether or not there always exist non-trivial Funk functions on a spray space". In this note, we will prove that the answer is negative for the geodesic spray of a finslerian function of non-vanishing scalar flag curvature.
In this paper, we use the technique of Finslerian submersion to deduce a flag curvature formula for homogeneous Finsler spaces. Based on this formula, we give a complete classification of even-dimensional smooth coset spaces $G/H$ admitting $G$-invariant Finsler metrics with positive flag curvature. It turns out that the classification list coincides with that of the even dimensional homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature obtained by N.R. Wallach. We also find out all the coset spaces admitting invariant non-Riemannian Finsler metrics with positive flag curvature.
In this paper, we study locally projectively flat Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature ${\bf K}$. We prove those are totally determined by their behaviors at the origin by solving some nonlinear PDEs. The classifications when ${\bf K}=0$, ${\bf K}=-1$ and ${\bf K} =1$ are given respectively in an algebraic way. Further, we construct a new projectively flat Finsler metric with flag curvature ${\bf K}=1$ determined by a Minkowskian norm with double square roots at the origin. As an application of our main theorems, we give the classification of locally projectively flat spherical symmetr…
Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature play an important role to show the complexity and richness of general Finsler metrics. In this paper, on an $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ we study the Finsler metric $F=F(x,y)$ of scalar flag curvature ${\bf K} = {\bf K}(x,y)$ and discover some equations ${\bf K}$ should be satisfied. As an application, we mainly study the metric $F$ of weakly isotropic flag curvature ${\bf K} = \frac{3 θ}{F} + σ$, where $θ=θ_i(x) y^i \neq 0$ is a $1$-form and $σ=σ(x)$ is a scalar function. We prove that in this case, $F$ must be a Randers metric when $dim(M) \geq 3$. Fu…
We study non-reversible Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature 1 on S^2 and show that the geodesic flow of every such metric is conjugate to that of one of Katok's examples, which form a 1-parameter family. In particular, the length of the shortest closed geodesic is a complete invariant of the geodesic flow. We also show, in any dimension, that the geodesic flow of a Finsler metrics with constant positive flag curvature is completely integrable. Finally, we give an example of a Finsler metric on~$S^2$ with positive flag curvature such that no two closed geodesics intersect and show that…
In this paper, we introduce the flag-wise positively curved condition for Finsler spaces (the (FP) Condition), which means that in each tangent plane, we can find a flag pole in this plane such that the corresponding flag has positive flag curvature. Applying the Killing navigation technique, we find a list of compact coset spaces admitting non-negatively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics satisfying the (FP) Condition. Using a crucial technique we developed previously, we prove that most of these coset spaces cannot be endowed with positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. We also prove …
Singular Finsler metrics, such as Kropina metrics and $m$-Kropina metrics, have a lot of applications in the real world. In this paper, we classify a class of singular $(α,β)$-metrics which are locally projectively flat with constant flag curvature in dimension $n= 2$ and $n \ge 3$ respectively. Further, we determine the local structure of $m$-Kropina metrics and particularly Kropina metrics which are projectively flat with constant flag curvature and prove that such metrics must be locally Minkowskian but are not necessarily flat-parallel.
We prove that a homogeneous Finsler sphere with constant flag curvature $K\equiv1$ and a prime closed geodesic of length $2π$ must be Riemannian. This observation provides the evidence for the non-existence of homogeneous Bryant spheres. It also helps us propose an alternative approach proving that a geodesic orbit Finsler sphere with $K\equiv1$ must be Randers. Then we discuss the behavior of geodesics on a homogeneous Finsler sphere with $K\equiv1$. We prove that many geodesic properties for homogeneous Randers spheres with $K\equiv1$ can be generalized to the non-Randers case.
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to a crucial sign error in equation 1. An isometry $ρ$ of a connected Finsler space $(M, F)$ is called bounded if the function $d(x, ρ(x))$ is bounded on $M$. It is called a Clifford-Wolf translation if the function $d(x, ρ(x))$ is constant on $M$. In this paper, we prove that on a complete connected simply connected Finsler space of non-positive flag curvature, an isometry is bounded if and only if it is a Clifford-Wolf translation. As an application, we prove that a homogeneous Finsler space of negative flag curvature admits a transitive solvab…
In this paper, we consider a special class of singular Finsler metrics: $m$-Kropina metrics which are defined by a Riemannian metric and a $1$-form. We show that an $m$-Kropina metric ($m\ne -1$) of scalar flag curvature must be locally Minkowskian in dimension $n\ge 3$. We characterize by some PDEs a Kropina metric ($m=-1$) which is respectively of scalar flag curvature and locally projectively flat in dimension $n\ge 3$, and obtain some principles and approaches of constructing non-trivial examples of Kropina metrics of scalar flag curvature.
In 2001, Zhongmin Shen asked if it is possible for two projectively related Finsler metrics to have the same Riemann curvature tensor, [14, page 184]. In this paper, we provide an answer to this question, within the class of Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature. In Theorem 3.1, we show that the answer is negative, for non-vanishing scalar flag curvature. The answer is known to be positive when the scalar flag curvature vanishes, [12, 14] and this positive answer is related to the existence of many solutions to Hilbert's Fourth Problem. As a generalisation of this problem, we can ask if it …
The broken scattering relation consists of the total lengths of broken geodesics that start from the boundary, change direction once inside the manifold, and propagate to the boundary. We show that if two reversible Finsler manifolds satisfying a convex foliation condition have the same broken scattering relation, then they are isometric. This implies that some anisotropic material parameters of the Earth can be in principle reconstructed from single scattering measurements at the surface.
In this paper, we study the interaction between the geodesic orbit (g.o.~in short) property and certain flag curvature conditions. A Finsler manifold is called g.o.~if each constant speed geodesic is the orbit of a one-parameter subgroup. Besides the non-negatively curved condition, we also concern the (FP) condition for the flag curvature, i.e., in any flag we can find a flag pole, such that the flag curvature is positive. The main theorem we will prove is the following. If a g.o.~Finsler space $(M,F)$ has non-negative flag curvature and satisfies the (FP) condition, then $M$ must be compact.…
In this paper, we define almost paracontact and normal almost paracontact Finsler structures on a vector bundle and find some conditions for integrability of these structures. We define paracontact metric, para- Sasakian and K-paracontact Finsler structures and study some properties of these structures. For a K-paracontact Finsler structure, we find the vertical and horizontal flag curvatures. Then, we define vertical ?-flag curvature and prove that every locally symmetric para-Sasakian Finsler structure has negative vertical ?-flag curvature. Finally, we define the horizontal and vertical Ric…
Recently, we developed a method for the study of holonomy properties of non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds and obtained that the holonomy group can not be a compact Lie group, if the Finsler manifold of dimension $> 2$ has non-zero constant flag curvature. The purpose of this paper is to move further, exploring the holonomy properties of projectively flat Finsler manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature. We prove in particular that projectively flat Randers and Bryant-Shen manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature have infinite dimensional holonomy group.
We recently established a Toponogov type triangle comparison theorem for a certain class of Finsler manifolds whose radial flag curvatures are bounded below by that of a von Mangoldt surface of revolution (arXiv:1205.3913). In this article, as its applications, we prove the finiteness of topological type and a diffeomorphism theorem to Euclidean spaces.
In this paper we study the Finsler sphere $(S^n,F)$ with $n>1$, which has constant flag curvature $K\equiv 1$ and only finite prime closed geodesics. In this case, the connected isometry group $I_0(S^n,F)$ must be a torus which dimension satisfies $0<\dim I(S^n,F) \leq[\frac{n+1}{2}]$. We will prove that the number of geometrically distinct reversible closed geodesics on $(S^n,F)$ is at least $\dim I(S^n,F)$. When $\dim I_0(S^n,F)=[\frac{n+1}{2}]$, the equality happens, and there are exactly $2[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ prime closed geodesics, which verifies Anosov conjecture in this special case.
In the present paper, we find out necessary and sufficient conditions for a Finsler surface $(M,F)$ to be Landsbregian in terms of the Berwald curvature $2$-forms. We study Finsler surfaces which satisfy some flag curvature $K$ conditions, viz., $V(K)=0,\,\,V(K)= -\mathcal{I}/F^2$ and $V(K)=-\mathcal{I}\,K,$ where $\mathcal{I}$ is the Cartan scalar. In order to do so, we investigate some geometric objects associated with the global Berwald distribution $\mathcal{D}:= \operatorname{span}\{S, H, V:=JH\}$ of a $2$-dimensional Finsler metrizable nonflat spray $S$. We obtain some classifications of…
If a non-reversible Finsler norm is the sum of a reversible Finsler norm and a closed 1-form, then one can uniquely recover the 1-form up to potential fields from the boundary distance data. We also show a boundary rigidity result for Randers metrics where the reversible Finsler norm is induced by a Riemannian metric which is boundary rigid. Our theorems generalize Riemannian boundary rigidity results to some non-reversible Finsler manifolds. We provide an application to seismology where the seismic wave propagates in a moving medium.
This article is an exposition of four loosely related remarks on the geometry of Finsler manifolds with constant positive flag curvature. <p> The first remark is that there is a canonical Kahler structure on the space of geodesics of such a manifold. <p> The second remark is that there is a natural way to construct a (not necessarily complete) Finsler n-manifold of constant positive flag curvature out of a hypersurface in suitably general position in complex projective n-space. <p> The third remark is that there is a description of the Finsler metrics of constant curvature on the 2-sphere in t…
We study two-dimensional Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature and show that such Finsler metrics that admit a Killing field can be written in a normal form that depends on two arbitrary functions of one variable. Furthermore, we find an approach to calculate these functions for spherically symmetric Finsler surfaces of constant flag curvature. In particular, we obtain the normal form of the Funk metric on the unit disk D^2.
By using the Hawking Taub-NUT metric, this note gives an explicit construction of a 3-parameter family of Einstein Finsler metrics of non-constant flag curvature in terms of navigation representation.
A Finsler space $(M,F)$ is called flag-wise positively curved, if for any $x\in M$ and any tangent plane $\mathbf{P}\subset T_xM$, we can find a nonzero vector $y\in \mathbf{P}$, such that the flag curvature $K^F(x,y, \mathbf{P})>0$. Though compact positively curved spaces are very rare in both Riemannian and Finsler geometry, flag-wise positively curved metrics should be easy to be found. A generic Finslerian perturbation for a non-negatively curved homogeneous metric may have a big chance to produce flag-wise positively curved metrics. This observation leads our discovery of these metrics on…
The flag curvature is a natural extension of the sectional curvature in Riemannian geometry, and the S-curvature is a non-Riemannian quantity which vanishes for Riemannian metrics. There are (incomplete) non-Riemannian Finsler metrics on an open subset in R^n with negative flag curvature and constant S-curvature. In this paper, we are going to show a global rigidity theorem that every Finsler metric with negative flag curvature and constant S-curvature must be Riemannian if the manifold is compact. We also study the nonpositive flag curvature case.
One of the most important problems in Finsler geometry is to classify Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature. In this paper, we study the classification problem of Randers metrics of scalar flag curvature. Under the condition that $β$ is a Killing 1-form, we obtain some important necessary conditions for Randers metrics to be of scalar flag curvature.
We show that the geodesic ray transform is injective on scalar functions on spherically symmetric reversible Finsler manifolds where the Finsler norm satisfies a Herglotz condition. We use angular Fourier series to reduce the injectivity problem to the invertibility of generalized Abel transforms and by Taylor expansions of geodesics we show that these Abel transforms are injective. Our result has applications in linearized boundary rigidity problem on Finsler manifolds and especially in linearized elastic travel time tomography.
A Finsler metric is geodesically reversible if geodesics remain geodesics after a change of orientation. Asymmetric norms on vector spaces and Funk metrics in the interior of convex bodies are examples of geodesically reversible metrics that are not necessarily sums of reversible metrics and closed 1-forms. However, there seem to be few such examples in closed manifolds. In this paper the theory of volumes and areas on Finsler spaces is applied to establish a number of rigidity theorems which partially explain this paucity of examples. These rigidity results settle some hitherto unsolved cases…
The flag curvature of a Finsler metric is called a Riemannian quantity because it is an extension of sectional curvature in Riemannian geometry. In Finsler geometry, there are several non-Riemannian quantities such as the (mean) Cartan torsion, the (mean) Landsberg curvature and the S-curvature, which all vanish for Riemannian metrics. It is important to understand the geometric meanings of these quantities. In this paper, we study Finsler metrics of scalar curvature (i.e., the flag curvature is a scalar function on the slit tangent bundle) and partially determine the flag curvature when certa…
It is well known that a system of homogeneous second-order ordinary differential equations (spray) is necessarily isotropic in order to be metrizable by a Finsler function of scalar flag curvature. In Theorem 3.1 we show that the isotropy condition, together with three other conditions on the Jacobi endomorphism, characterize sprays that are metrizable by Finsler functions of scalar flag curvature. The proof of Theorem 3.1 provides an algorithm to construct the Finsler function of scalar flag curvature, in the case when a given spray is metrizable. One condition of Theorem 3.1, regarding the r…
We have shown that the Beltrami Theorem in Riemannian geometry is still true for square metrics if the dimension $n\ge 3$, namely, an $n(\ge 3)$-dimensional square metric is locally projectively flat if and only if it is of scalar flag curvature. In this paper, we go on with the study of the Beltrami Theorem for a larger class of $(α,β)$-metrics $F=αϕ(β/α)$ including square metrics, where $ϕ(s)$ is determined by a family of known ODEs satisfied by projectively flat $(α,β)$-metrics. For this class, we prove that the Beltrami Theorem holds if $β$ is closed, and in particular, we prove that $β$ m…
In this paper, we classify the spherically symmetric Berwald metrics in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For the spherically symmetric Landsberg metrics, we prove that there do not exist any non-Berwald metrics among the regular case. The partial differential equation systems which can respectively characterize the spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature and Einstein metrics of this type is also obtained. Utilizing these equations, we find an effective way to construct the non-projective, non-Randers Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature and many explicit examples are given by…
We define a Weyl-type curvature tensor that provides a characterisation for Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature. When the Finsler metric reduces to a Riemannian metric, the Weyl-type curvature tensor reduces to the classic projective Weyl tensor. In the general case, the Weyl-type curvature tensor differs from the Weyl projective curvature, it is not a projective invariant, and hence Beltrami Theorem does not work in Finsler geometry. We provide the relation between the Weyl-type curvature tensors of two projectively related Finsler metrics. Using this formula we show that a projective …
In this paper we study the flag curvature of a particular class of Finsler metrics called general $(α,β)$-metrics, which are defined by a Riemannian metric $α$ and a $1$-form $β$. The classification of such metrics with constant flag curvature are completely determined under some suitable conditions, which make them be locally projectively flat. As a result, we construct some new projectively flat Finsler metrics with flag curvature $1$, $0$ and $-1$, all of which are of singularity at some directions.
We investigate the relation between weighted quasi-metric Spaces and Finsler Spaces. We show that the induced metric of a Randers space with reversible geodesics is a weighted quasi-metric space.
In this paper, we prove two rigidity results for non-positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. Our first main result yields an extension of Hu-Deng's well-known result proven for the Randers metrics. Indeed, we prove that every connected homogeneous Finsler space with non-positive flag curvature and isotropic S-curvature is Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We extend the Szabó's rigidity theorem for Berwald surfaces and show that homogeneous isotropic Berwald metrics with non-positive flag curvature are Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We prove that a homogeneous $(α, β)$-metrics has i…
Recently, we have studied evolution of a family of Finsler metrics along Finsler Ricci flow and proved its convergence in short time. Here, evolution equation of the reduced $hh$-curvature and the Ricci scalar along the Finslerian Ricci flow is obtained and it is proved that the Ricci flow preserves positivity of reduced $hh$-curvature on finite time. Next, it is shown that the evolution of Ricci scalar is a parabolic-type equation and if the initial Finsler metric is of positive flag curvature, then the flag curvature and the Ricci scalar remain positive as long as the solution exists. Finall…
We prove some rigidity results on geodesic orbit Finsler spaces with non-positive curvature. In particular, we show that a geodesic Finsler space with strictly negative flag curvature must be a non-compact Riemannian symmetric space of rank one.
In this paper, we consider a Finsler sphere $(M,F)=(S^n,F)$ with the dimension $n>1$ and the flag curvature $K\equiv 1$. The action of the connected isometry group $G=I_o(M,F)$ on $M$, together with the action of $T=S^1$ shifting the parameter $t\in \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ of the closed curve $c(t)$, define an action of $\hat{G}=G\times T$ on the free loop space $λM$ of $M$. In particular, for each closed geodesic, we have a $\hat{G}$-orbit of closed geodesics. We assume the Finsler sphere $(M,F)$ described above has only finite orbits of prime closed geodesics. Our main theorem claims, if the …
Here, an extension of the Obata-Tanno's theorem to Finsler geometry is established and the following rigidity result is obtained; Every complete connected Finsler manifold of positive constant flag curvature is isometrically homeomorphic to an $n$-sphere equipped with a certain Finsler metric, and vise versa.
For non-reversible Finsler metrics of positive flag curvature on spheres and projective spaces we present results about the number and the length of closed geodesics and about their stability properties.
In this paper, we give the general form of spherically symmetric Finsler metrics in $R^n$ and surprisedly find that many well-known Finsler metrics belong to this class. Then we explicitly express projective metrics of this type. The necessary and sufficient conditions that projective Finsler metrics with spherical symmetry have constant flag curvature are also obtained.
We continue our study of geometric analysis on (possibly non-reversible) Finsler manifolds, based on the Bochner inequality established by the author and Sturm. Following the approach of the $Γ$-calculus a la Bakry et al, we show the dimensional versions of the Poincare--Lichnerowicz inequality, the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, and the Sobolev inequality. In the reversible case, these inequalities were obtained by Cavalletti--Mondino in the framework of curvature-dimension condition by means of the localization method. We show that the same (sharp) estimates hold also for non-reversible met…
The current paper deals with some new classes of Finsler metrics with reversible geodesics. We construct weighted quasi-metrics associated with these metrics. Further, we investigate some important geometric properties of weighted quasi-metric space. Finally, we discuss the embedding of quasi-metric spaces with generalized weight.
