From 2013 April to 2014 April, we performed an X-ray and optical simultaneous monitoring of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. It employed Suzaku, and 5 Japanese ground-based telescopes, the Pirka, Kiso Schmidt, Nayuta, MITSuME, and the Kanata telescopes. The Suzaku observations were conducted seven times with various intervals ranging from days, weeks, to months, with an exposure of $\sim50$ ksec each. The optical $B$-band observations not only covered those of Suzaku almost simultaneously, but also followed the source as frequently as possible. As a result, NGC 3516 was found in its faint phase with the 2-10 keV flux of $0.21-2.70 \times 10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The 2-45 keV X-ray spectra were composed of a dominant variable hard power-law continuum with a photon index of $\sim1.7$, and a non-relativistic reflection component with a prominent Fe-K$α$ emission line. Producing the $B$-band light curve by differential image photometry, we found that the $B$-band flux changed by $\sim2.7 \times 10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, which is comparable to the X-ray variation, and detected a significant flux correlation between the hard power-law component in X-rays and the $B$-band radiation, for the first time in NGC 3516. By examining their correlation, we found that the X-ray flux preceded that of $B$ band by $2.0^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$ days ($1σ$ error). Although this result supports the X-ray reprocessing model, the derived lag is too large to be explained by the standard view which assumes a "lamppost"-type X-ray illuminator located near a standard accretion disk. Our results are better explained by assuming a hot accretion flow and a truncated disk.
The bright type I Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516 was observed by {\it Suzaku} twice, in 2005 October 12--15 and 2009 October 28--November 2, for a gross time coverage of 242 and 544 ksec and a net exposure of 134 and 255 ksec, respectively. The 2--10 keV luminosity was $2.8 \times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in 2005, and $1.6 \times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in 2009. The 1.4--1.7 keV and 2--10 keV count rates both exhibited peak-to-peak variations by a factor of $\sim2$ in 2005, while $\sim 4$ in 2009. In either observation, the 15--45 keV count rate was less variable. The 2--10 keV spectrum in 2005 was signif…
Mkn 3 is a Seyfert 2 galaxy that is widely regarded as an exemplary Compton-thick AGN. We study the Suzaku X-ray spectrum using models of the X-ray reprocessor that self-consistently account for the Fe K$α$ fluorescent emission line and the associated Compton-scattered, or reflection, continuum. We find a solution in which the average global column density, $0.234^{+0.012}_{-0.010} \times 10^{24} \ \rm cm^{-2}$, is very different to the line-of-sight column density, $0.902^{+0.012}_{-0.013} \times 10^{24} \ \rm cm^{-2}$. The global column density is $\sim 5$ times smaller than that required fo…
The type I Seyfert galaxy NGC 3227 was observed by Suzaku six times in 2008, with intervals of $\sim1$ week and net exposures of $\sim50$ ksec each. Among the six observations, the source varied by nearly an order of magnitude, being brightest in the 1st observation with a 2-10 keV luminosity of $1.2\times10^{42}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, while faintest in the 4th with $2.9\times10^{41}$~erg~s$^{-1}$. As it became fainter, the continuum in a 2-45 keV band became harder, while a narrow Fe-K$α$ emission line, detected on all occasions at 6.4 keV of the source rest frame, remained approximately constant in …
We present the results of the analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348, observed by Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The overall spectrum of Mrk 348 can be described by a primary power law continuum seen through three layers of absorption, of which one is neutral and two are ionised. Comparing Suzaku (2008) and XMM-Newton (2002) observations we find variability of the X-ray spectral curvature. We suggest that the variability can be explained through the change of column density of both the neutral and one of the ionised absorbers, together with a variation of the ionisation level of the s…
We report on the results of spectral fits made to data obtained from a 168 ksec Suzaku observation of the Seyfert-1 galaxy Fairall 9. The source is clearly detected out to 30 keV. The observed spectrum is fairly simple; it is well-described by a power-law with a soft excess and disk reflection. A broad iron line is detected, and easily separated from distinct narrow components owing to the resolution of the CCDs in the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS). The broad line is revealed to be asymmetric, consistent with a disk origin. We fit the XIS and Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) spectra with relativis…
The morphology of the circumnuclear gas accreting onto supermassive black holes in Seyfert galaxies remains a topic of much debate. As the innermost regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are spatially unresolved, X-ray spectroscopy, and in particular line-of-sight absorption variability, is a key diagnostic to map out the distribution of gas. Observations of variable X-ray absorption in multiple Seyferts and over a wide range of timescales indicate the presence of clumps/clouds of gas within the circumnuclear material. Eclipse events by clumps transiting the line of sight allow us to explore…
The bright and highly-variable Seyfert I Active Galactic Nucleus, IC4329A, was observed with Suzaku 5 times in 2007 August with intervals of ~ 5 days, and a net exposure of 24-31 ks each. Another longer observation was carried out in 2012 August with a net exposure of 118 ks. In the 6 observations, the source was detected in 2-45 keV with average 2-10 keV fluxes of $(0.67-1.2)\times10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The intensity changed by a factor of 2 among the 5 observations in 2007, and 1.5 within the 2012 observation. Difference spectra among these observations revealed that the variabili…
We present broad band Suzaku}observations of a small sample of hard X-ray selected (> 10 keV), nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies and discuss the results in the context of AGN unified model. We also review the issues related to the space density of heavily obscured, Compton Thick AGN in the local Universe and the perspectives for the search of these objects at high redshifts
We report the serendipitous discovery of a transient X-ray source, Suzaku J1305$-$4930, $\sim$3 kpc southwest of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. Among the seven Suzaku observations of NGC 4945 from 2005 to 2011, Suzaku J1305$-$4930 was detected four times in July and August in 2010. The X-ray spectra are better approximated with a multi-color disk model than a power-law model. At the first detection on 2010 July 4--5, its X-ray luminosity was $(8.9^{+0.2}_{-0.4}) \times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and the temperature at the inner-disk radius ($kT_{\rm in}$) was $1.12\pm0.04$ keV. At th…
We have carried out a systematic analysis of the nearby (z=0.0279) active galaxy Zw 229.015 using multi-epoch, multi-instrument and deep pointed observations with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift and NuSTAR. Spectral and temporal variability are examined in detail on both the long (weeks-to-years) and short (hours) timescales. A deep Suzaku observation of the source shows two distinct spectral states; a bright-soft state and a dim-hard state in which changes in the power law component account for the differences. Partial covering, blurred reflection and soft Comptonisation models describe the X-ray s…
We analyze the X-ray, optical, and mid-infrared data of a "changing-look" Seyfert galaxy \sdssj15 at $z\simeq0.086$. Over a period of one decade (2009 - 2018), its broad H$α$ line intensity increased by a factor of $\sim$4. Meanwhile, the X-ray emission in 2014 as observed by \chandra\ was about five times brighter than that in 2010 by {\it Suzaku}, and the corresponding emissions in V-band, mid-infrared W1 band brighten by $\sim$ 0.18, 0.32 mag, respectively. Moreover, the absorption in X-rays is moderate and stable, i.e. ${\rm N_{H}}\sim 10^{21} {\rm cm^{-2}}$, but the X-ray spectrum becomes…
We discuss the results on the hot corona parameters of Active Galactic Nuclei that have been recently measured with NuSTAR. The values taken from the literature of a sample of nineteen bright Seyfert galaxies are analysed. Aims. The aim of this work is to look for correlations between coronal parameters, such as the photon index and cutoff energy (when a phenomenological model is adopted) or the optical depth and temperature (when a Comptonization model is used), with other parameters of the systems like the black hole mass or the Eddington ratio. We analysed the coronal parameters of the nine…
We present the results of a Suzaku monitoring campaign of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC7582. The source is characterized by very rapid (on timescales even lower than a day) changes of the column density of an inner absorber, together with the presence of constant components arising as reprocessing from a Compton-thick material. The best fitting scenario implies important modifications to the zeroth order view of Unified Models. While the existence of a pc-scale torus is needed in order to produce a constant Compton reflection component and an iron K$α$ emission line, in this Seyfert 2 galaxy this …
IRAS 00521$-$7054 is the first Seyfert 2 in which the presence of an extremely large Fe K$α$ line has been claimed. We report here on the analysis of a 100 ks Suzaku observation of the source. We confirm the existence of a very strong excess over the power-law X-ray continuum at $E\sim6$ keV ($EW\simeq 800$ eV), extending down to $\sim 4.5$ keV, and found that the X-ray spectrum of the source can be explained by two different models. i) An absorption scenario, in which the X-ray source is obscured by two fully-covering ionized absorbers, with a strong reflection component from neutral material…
We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising t…
We disentangle X-ray disk reflection from complex line-of-sight absorption in the nearby Seyfert NGC 4151, using a suite of Suzaku, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton observations. Extending upon earlier published work, we pursue a physically motivated model using the latest angle-resolved version of the lamp-post geometry reflection model relxillCp_lp together with a Comptonization continuum. We use the long-look simultaneous Suzaku/NuSTAR observation to develop a baseline model wherein we model reflected emission as a combination of lamp-post components at the heights of 1.2 and 15.0 gravitational radii…
Approximately 10-20% of Active Galactic Nuclei are known to eject powerful jets from the innermost regions. There is very little observational evidence if the jets are powered by spinning black holes and if the accretion disks extend to the innermost regions in radio-loud AGN. Here we study the soft X-ray excess, the hard X-ray spectrum and the optical/UV emission from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 0558-504 using Suzaku and Swift observations. The broadband X-ray continuum of PKS 0558- 504 consists of a soft X-ray excess emission below 2 keV that is well described by a blackb…
Hard X-ray spectra of 28 bright Seyfert galaxies observed with INTEGRAL were analyzed together with the X-ray spectra from XMM-Newton, Suzaku and RXTE. These broad-band data were fitted with a model assuming a thermal Comptonization as a primary continuum component. We tested several model options through a fitting of the Comptonized continuum accompanied by a complex absorption and a Compton reflection. Both the large data set used and the model space explored allowed us to accurately determine a mean temperature kTe of the electron plasma, the Compton parameter y and the Compton reflection s…
UltraFast Outflows (UFOs), seen as X-ray blueshifted absorption lines in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), are considered to be a key mechanism for AGN feedback. In this scenario, UFO kinetic energy is transferred into the cold and extended molecular outflow observed at the mm/sub-mm wavelength, which blows away the gas and suppresses star formation and accretion onto the central black hole (BH). However, the energy transfer between the inner UFO and the outer molecular outflow has not yet fully studied mainly due to the limited sample. In this paper, we performed comparison of their kinetic ener…
We have carried out an extensive X-ray spectral study of the bare Seyfert-1 galaxy MCG--02--58--22 to ascertain the nature of the X-ray reprocessing media, using observations from Suzaku (2009) and simultaneous observations from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR (2016) . The most significant results of our investigation are: 1. The primary X-ray emission from the corona is constant in these observations, both in terms of the power law slope ($Γ=1.80$) and luminosity ($L_{2-10 \rm keV}= 2.55\times 10^{44} $ erg/s). 2. The soft excess flux decreased by a factor of two in 2016, the Compton hump weakened/vani…
We present a broadband spectral study of the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H~0323+342 based on multi-epoch observations performed with NuSTAR on 2014 March 15, and two simultaneous observations performed with Suzaku and Swift on 2009 July 26 and 2013 March 1. We found the presence of a strong soft X-ray excess emission, a broad but weak Fe line and hard X-ray excess emission. We used the blurred reflection (relxill) and the intrinsic disc Comptonization (optxagnf), two physically motivated models, to describe the broadband spectra and to disentangle the disk/corona and jet emission.…
IRAS 18325-5926 is an X-ray bright, Compton-thin, type-2 Seyfert galaxy and it was the first Seyfert 2 in which the presence of a broad Fe K-alpha emission line was claimed. However, although the structure of the Fe line appears broad, there is tentative evidence that it may comprise multiple lines. Nevertheless, previous analyses have only consisted of fitting standalone broad components to the Fe K band. Here, we have analyzed all available X-ray CCD data from Suzaku, XMM-Newton and ASCA to fully investigate the nature of the emission complex by testing broad-band physical models and alterna…
Nearby active galactic nuclei were diagnosed in the X-ray and mid-to-far infrared wavelengths, with Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) and the Japanese infrared observatory AKARI, respectively. Among the X-ray sources listed in the second release of the MAXI all-sky X-ray source catalog, 100 ones are currently identified as a non-blazar-type active galactic nucleus. These include 95 Seyfert galaxies and 5 quasars, and they are composed of 73 type-1 and 27 type-2 objects. The AKARI all-sky survey point source catalog was searched for their mid- and far-infrared counterparts at 9, 18, and 90 …
We present a long (100 ks) Suzaku observation of one of the X-ray brightest AGN, MCG+8-11-11. These data were complemented with the 54-month Swift BAT spectrum, allowing us to perform a broad-band fit in the 0.6-150 keV range. The fits performed in the 0.6-10 keV band give consistent results with respect to a previous XMM-Newton observation, i.e. the lack of a soft excess, warm absorption along the line of sight, a large Compton reflection component (R~1) and the absence of a relativistic component of the neutral iron K$α$ emission line. However, when the PIN and Swift BAT data are included, t…
The narrow Fe K$α$ line is one of the main signatures of the reprocessing of X-ray radiation from the material surrounding supermassive black holes, and it has been found to be omnipresent in the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this work we study the characteristics of the narrow Fe K$α$ line in different types of AGN. Using the results of a large Suzaku study we find that Seyfert 2s have on average lower Fe K$α$ luminosities than Seyfert 1s for the same 10-50 keV continuum luminosity. Simulating dummy Sy1s and Sy2s populations using physical torus models of X-ray reflected e…
We present the results obtained from a detailed X-ray timing and spectral analysis of Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300 by using observations with the {\it Suzaku}, {\it Chandra} and {\it NuSTAR} observatories between 2007 and 2016. We calculate variance, rms fractional variability of the source in different energy bands and find variabilities in various energy bands. Spectral properties of the source are studied by using various phenomenological and physical models. The properties of the Compton clouds, reflection, Fe K$α$ line emission and soft X-ray excess are studied in detail. Several physical pa…
The 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3227 has been observed by several X-ray missions. We carried out a combined analysis of the data obtained by more recent major observations of the source: two observations performed by XMM-Newton in 2000 and 2006 and six observations performed by Suzaku in 2008. A unified model, which is consistent with all eight observations by the two satellites with large intensity and spectral changes, was constructed. The model consists of a hard power law withe the spectral index of Gamma Hard = 1.4-1.7, which is interpreted as the Comptonized emission from the corona above an …
Fairall 51 is a polar-scattered Seyfert 1 galaxy, a type of active galaxies believed to represent a bridge between unobscured type-1 and obscured type-2 objects. Fairall 51 has shown complex and variable X-ray absorption but only little is known about its origin. In our research, we observed Fairall 51 with the X-ray satellite Suzaku in order to constrain a characteristic time-scale of its variability. We performed timing and spectral analysis of four observations separated by 1.5, 2 and 5.5 day intervals. We found that the 0.5-50 keV broadband X-ray spectra are dominated by a primary power-la…
We present X-ray observations of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 4785. The source is a local Seyfert 2 which has not been studied so far in much detail. It was recently detected with high significance in the 15-60 keV band in the 66 month Swift/BAT all sky survey, but there have been no prior pointed X-ray observations of this object. With Suzaku, we clearly detect the source below 10 keV, and find it to have a flat continuum and prominent neutral iron fluorescence line with equivalent width >~1 keV. Fitting the broadband spectra with physical reflection models shows the source to be …
We have analyzed the broadband X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in two "non-merging" luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) UGC 2608 and NGC 5135, utilizing the data of NuSTAR, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and Chandra. Applying the X-ray clumpy-torus model (XCLUMPY: Tanimoto et al. 2019), we find that both sources have similar spectra characterized by Compton-thick (CT) absorption ($N_{\rm H} \sim$ 5-7 $\times$ $10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) and small torus angular width ($σ$ $<$ 20$^{\circ}$). The intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities are $3.9^{+2.2}_{-1.7}$ $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (UGC 2608) and $2…
Current measurements show that the observed fraction of Compton-thick (CT) AGN is smaller than the expected values needed to explain the cosmic X-ray background. Prior fits to the X-ray spectrum of the nearby Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 5347 ($z=0.00792,\, D =35.5 \rm ~Mpc $) have alternately suggested a CT and Compton-thin source. Combining archival data from $Suzaku$, $Chandra$, and - most importantly - new data from $NuSTAR$, and using three distinct families of models, we show that NGC 5347 is an obscured CTAGN ($N_{\rm H} > 2.23\times 10^{24}~\rm cm^{-2}$). Its 2-30~keV spectrum is dominated by …
We investigate the relationship between the long term X-ray spectral variability in the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 4151 and its intrinsic absorption, by comparing the 2014 simultaneous ultraviolet/X-Ray observations taken with Hubble STIS Echelle and Chandra HETGS with archival observations from Chandra, XMM-Newton and Suzaku. The observations are divided into "high" and "low" states, with the low states showing strong and unabsorbed extended emission at energies below 2 keV. Our X-ray model consists of a broken powerlaw, neutral reflection and the two dominant absorption components identified by …
