We present a long (100 ks) Suzaku observation of one of the X-ray brightest AGN, MCG+8-11-11. These data were complemented with the 54-month Swift BAT spectrum, allowing us to perform a broad-band fit in the 0.6-150 keV range. The fits performed in the 0.6-10 keV band give consistent results with respect to a previous XMM-Newton observation, i.e. the lack of a soft excess, warm absorption along the line of sight, a large Compton reflection component (R~1) and the absence of a relativistic component of the neutral iron K$α$ emission line. However, when the PIN and Swift BAT data are included, the reflection amount drops significantly (R~0.2-0.3), and a relativistic iron line is required, the latter confirmed by a phenomenological analysis in a restricted energy band (3-10 keV). When a self-consistent model is applied to the whole broadband data, the observed reflection component appears to be all associated to the relativistic component of the iron K$α$ line. The resulting scenario, though strongly model-dependent, requires that all the reprocessing spectral components from Compton-thick material must be associated to the accretion disc, and no evidence for the classical pc-scale torus is found. The narrow core of the neutral iron K$α$ line is therefore produced in a Compton-thin material, like the BLR, similarly to what found in another Seyfert galaxy, NGC7213, but with the notable difference that MCG+8-11-11 presents spectral signatures from an accretion disc. The very low accretion rate of NGC7213 could explain the lack of relativistic signatures in its spectrum, but the absence of the torus in both sources is more difficult to explain, since their luminosities are comparable, and their accretion rates are completely different.
We propose a method for the flux calibration of reverberation mapping spectra based on accurate measurement of [O III] $λ5007$ emission by spectral fitting. The method can achieve better accuracy than the traditional method of van Groningen & Wanders (1992), allowing reverberation mapping measurements for object with variability amplitudes as low as $\sim$ 5%. As a demonstration, we reanalyze the data of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 taken from the 2008 campaign of the Lick AGN Monitoring Project, which previously failed to obtain a time lag for this weakly variable object owing to a relat…
We report the results of a detailed analysis of a deep simultaneous $130\,\rm ks$ \textit{XMM-Newton & NuSTAR} observation of the nearby ($z=0.0315$) and bright ($L_{\rm bol}\sim3\times10^{45}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) starburst-AGN Seyfert\,2 system: MCG--03--58--007. From the broadband fitting we show that most of the obscuration needs to be modeled with a toroidal type reprocessor such as \texttt{MYTorus} \citep{MurphyYaqoob09}. Nonetheless the signature of a powerful disc-wind is still apparent at higher energies and the observed rapid short-term X-ray spectral variability is more likely caused b…

We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG-01-24-12 based on a multi-epoch data set. Data have been taken with different X-ray satellites, namely XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Swift and Chandra and cover different time intervals, from years down to a few days. From 2006 to 2013 the source had a 2-10 keV flux of $\sim$1.5$\times$10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, consistent with archival observations based on \textit{HEAO} and \textit{BeppoSAX} data, though a 2019 \textit{Chandra} snapshot caught the source in an extreme low flux state, a factor of $\sim$10 fainter t…
We have carried out an extensive X-ray spectral study of the bare Seyfert-1 galaxy MCG--02--58--22 to ascertain the nature of the X-ray reprocessing media, using observations from Suzaku (2009) and simultaneous observations from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR (2016) . The most significant results of our investigation are: 1. The primary X-ray emission from the corona is constant in these observations, both in terms of the power law slope ($Γ=1.80$) and luminosity ($L_{2-10 \rm keV}= 2.55\times 10^{44} $ erg/s). 2. The soft excess flux decreased by a factor of two in 2016, the Compton hump weakened/vani…
Measurements of the high-energy cut-off in the coronal continuum of active galactic nuclei have long been elusive for all but a small number of the brightest examples. We present a direct measurement of the cut-off energy in the nuclear continuum of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG -05-23-016 with unprecedented precision. The high sensitivity of NuSTAR up to 79 keV allows us to clearly disentangle the spectral curvature of the primary continuum from that of its reflection component. Using a simple phenomenological model for the hard X-ray spectrum, we constrain the cut-off energy to $116_{-5}…

We present long term monitoring of MCG-6-30-15 in X-rays, optical and near-IR wavelengths, collected over five years of monitoring. We determine the power spectrum density of all the observed bands and show that after taking into account the host contamination similar power is observed in the optical and near-IR bands. There is evidence for a correlation between the light curves of the X-ray photon flux and the optical B-band, but it is not possible to determine a lag with certainty, with the most likely value being around zero days. Strong correlation is seen between the optical and near-IR b…
We present optical continuum lags for two Seyfert 1 galaxies, MCG+08-11-011 and NGC 2617, using monitoring data from a reverberation mapping campaign carried out in 2014. Our light curves span the ugriz filters over four months, with median cadences of 1.0 and 0.6 days for MCG+08-11-011 and NGC\,2617, respectively, combined with roughly daily X-ray and near-UV data from Swift for NGC 2617. We find lags consistent with geometrically thin accretion-disk models that predict a lag-wavelength relation of $τ\propto λ^{4/3}$. However, the observed lags are larger than predictions based on standard th…

We present optical integral field spectroscopy for five $z<0.062$ narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) host galaxies, probing their host galaxies at $\gtrsim 2-3$ kpc scales. Emission lines in the nuclear AGN spectra and the large-scale host galaxy are analyzed separately, based on an AGN-host decomposition technique. The host galaxy gas kinematics indicates large-scale gas rotation in all five sources. At the probed scales of $\gtrsim 2-3$ kpc, the host galaxy gas is found to be predominantly ionized by star formation without any evidence of a strong AGN contribution. None of the five objec…
We present the analysis of the molecular gas in the nuclear regions of NGC 4968, NGC 4845, and MCG-06-30-15, with the help of ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) emission line. The aim is to determine the kinematics of the gas in the central (~ 1 kpc) region. We use the 3D-Based Analysis of Rotating Object via Line Observations ($^{3D}$BAROLO) and DiskFit softwares. Circular motions dominate the kinematics of the gas in the central discs, mainly in NGC 4845 and MCG-06-30-15, however there is a clear evidence of non-circular motions in the central ($\sim$ 1 kpc) region of NGC 4845 and NGC 4968. Th…
We report the discovery of a mid-infrared (MIR) flare using WISE data in the center of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-02-04-026. The MIR flare began in the first half of 2014, peaked around the end of 2015, and faded in 2017. During these years, energy more than $7\times10^{50}$ erg was released in the infrared, and the flare's MIR color was generally turning red. We detected neither optical nor ultraviolet (UV) variation corresponding to the MIR flare based on available data. We explained the MIR flare using a dust echo model in which the radiative transfer is involved. The MIR flare can b…
According to the unified model of active galactic nuclei, Seyfert 2 galaxies are physically the same as Seyfert 1 objects and they possess a broad-line region (BLR), but it is hidden from the observer due to their orientation. In the past few years, various authors reported that not all Seyfert 2 galaxies harbor a BLR. We compiled a sample of 38 Seyfert 2 galaxies to find non-hidden broad-line region (non-HBLR) objects. Using the theory of Nicastro et al. which suggests the existence of a critical value of the Eddington ratio below which BLR can't be formed, we found 26 non-HBLR Seyfert 2 cand…
We report the first Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array observations of MCG-03-58-007, a local ($z=0.03236\pm0.00002$, this work) AGN ($L_{AGN}\sim10^{45}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$), hosting a powerful X-ray ultra-fast ($v=0.1c$) outflow (UFO). The CO(1-0) line emission is observed across $\sim18\,$kpc scales with a resolution of $\sim 1\,\rm kpc$. About 78\% of the CO(1-0) luminosity traces a galaxy-size rotating disk. However, after subtracting the emission due to such rotating disk, we detect with a S/N=20 a residual emission in the central $\sim 4\,$kpc. Such residuals may trace a low veloc…
We present the results of a reverberation campaign targeting MGC-06-30-15. Spectrophotometric monitoring and broad-band photometric monitoring over the course of 4 months in the spring of 2012 allowed a determination of a time delay in the broad H$β$ emission line of $τ=5.3\pm1.8$ days in the rest frame of the AGN. Combined with the width of the variable portion of the emission line, we determine a black hole mass of $M_{\rm BH} = (1.6 \pm 0.4) \times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$. Both the H$β$ time delay and the black hole mass are in good agreement with expectations from the $R_{\rm BLR}$-$L$ and $M_{\…
X-ray reverberation mapping has emerged as a new tool to probe accretion in AGN, providing a potentially powerful probe of accretion at the black hole scale. The lags, along with relativistic spectral signatures are often interpreted in light of the lamp-post model. Focusing specifically on testing the prediction of the relativistic reverberation model, we have targeted several of the brightest Seyfert Galaxies in X-rays with different observing programs. Here, we report the results from two large campaigns with NuSATR targeting MCG-5-23-16 and SWIFT J2127.4+5654 to test the model predictions …
High angular resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has revealed a remarkable population of galaxies hosting dwarf Seyfert nuclei with an unusually large broad-line region (BLR). These objects are remarkable for two reasons. Firstly, the size of the BLR can, in some cases, rival those seen in the most luminous quasars. Secondly, the size of the BLR is not correlated with the central continuum luminosity, an observation that distinguishes them from their reverberating counterparts. Collectively, these early results suggest that non-reverberating dwarf Seyferts ar…
The hidden broad-line regions (BLRs) in Seyfert 2 galaxies, which display broad emission lines (BELs) in their polarized spectra, are a key piece of evidence in support of the unified model for active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, the detailed kinematics and geometry of hidden BLRs are still not fully understood. The virial factor obtained from reverberation mapping of type 1 AGNs may be a useful diagnostic of the nature of hidden BLRs in type 2 objects. In order to understand the hidden BLRs, we compile six type 2 objects from the literature with polarized BELs and dynamical measurements o…
We investigated narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) at optical, mid-infrared (MIR) and X-ray wavelengths, comparing them to the broad line active galactic nuclei (BLAGNs). We found that black hole mass, coronal line luminosities, X-ray hardness ratio and X-ray, optical and MIR luminosities are higher for the BLAGNs than for NLS1s, while policyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contribution and the accretion rates are higher for the NLS1s. Furthermore, we found some trends among spectral parameters that NLS1s have and BLAGNs do not have. The evolution of FWHM(H$β$) with the luminosities of MIR …
The flux-flux plot (FFP) method can provide model-independent clues regarding the X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei. To use it properly, the bin size of the light curves should be as short as possible, provided the average counts in the light curve bins are larger than $\sim 200$. We apply the FFP method to the 2013, simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the Seyfert galaxy MCG$-$6-30-15, in the 0.3-40 keV range. The FFPs above $\sim 1.6$ keV are well-described by a straight line. This result rules out spectral slope variations and the hypothesis of absorption driven vari…
NGC 3147, NGC 4698 and 1ES 1927+654 are active galaxies that are classified as Seyfert 2s, based on the line ratios of strong narrow emission lines in their optical spectra. However, they exhibit rapid X-ray spectral variability and/or little indication of obscuration in X-ray spectral fitting, contrary to expectation from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) unification model. Using optical spectropolarimetry with LRIS and near-infrared spectroscopy with NIRSPEC at the W. M. Keck Observatory, we conducted a deep search for hidden polarized broad H-alpha and direct broad Pa-beta or Br-gamma emiss…
We studied optical variability (OV) of a large sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) and broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLSy1) galaxies with z<0.8 to investigate any differences in their OV properties. Using archival optical V-band light curves from the Catalina Real Time Transient Survey that span 5-9 years and modeling them using damped random walk, we estimated the amplitude of variability. We found NLSy1 galaxies as a class show lower amplitude of variability than their broad-line counterparts. In the sample of both NLSy1 and BLSy1 galaxies, radio-loud sources are found to have higher variability…
Traditional classification for subclass of the Seyfert galaxies is visual inspection or using a quantity defined as a flux ratio between the Balmer line and forbidden line. One algorithm of deep learning is Convolution Neural Network (CNN) and has shown successful classification results. We building a 1-dimension CNN model to distinguish Seyfert 1.9 spectra from Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find our model can recognize Seyfert 1.9 and Seyfert 2 spectra with an accuracy over 80% and pick out an additional Seyfert 1.9 sample which was missed by visual inspection. We use the new Seyfert 1.9 sample to i…
