We consider the problem of an overdamped Brownian particle moving in multiscale potential with N + 1 characteristic length scales: the macroscale and N separated microscales. We show that the coarse-grained dynamics is given by an overdamped Langevin equation with respect to the free energy and with a space dependent diffusion tensor, the calculation of which requires the solution of N fully coupled Poisson equations. We study in detail the structure of the bifurcation diagram for one-dimensional problems and we show that the multiscale structure in the potential leads to hysteresis effects and to noise-induced transitions. Furthermore, we obtain an explicit formula for the effective diffusion coefficient for a self-similar separable potential and we investigate the limit of infinitely many small scales.
We develop the hydrodynamic theory for number conserving asymmetric exclusion processes with short-range random quenched disordered hopping rates, which is one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi- Zhang (KPZ) equation with quenched columnar disorder. We show that when the system is away from half-filling, the universal spatio-temporal scaling of the density fluctuations is indistinguishable from its pure counterpart, with the model belonging to the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In contrast, close to half-filling, the quenched disorder is relevant, leading to a new universality …
Spontaneous persistent motions driven by active processes play a central role to maintain the living cells far from equilibrium. In the majority of the research works, the steady state dynamics of an active system has been described in terms of an effective temperature. In the majority of the research works, the steady state dynamics of an active system has been described in terms of an effective temperature. By contrast, we have examined a prototype model for diffusion in an activity-induced rugged energy landscape to describe the slow dynamics of a tagged particle in a dense active environme…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with concentrated solid solutions are conceived to possess a rugged atomic and energy landscape in which dislocation motion necessarily proceeds to accommodate mechanical deformation. Fundamental questions remain as to how rough the energy landscape is and to what extent it can be influenced by the local ordering of their constituent elements. Here, we construct and report the potential energy landscape (PEL) governing screw dislocation motion in refractory HEAs that reveals a hierarchical and multilevel structure with a collection of small basins nested in large met…
The complex dynamics of an increasing number of systems is attributed to the emergence of a rugged energy landscape with an exponential number of metastable states. To develop this picture into a predictive dynamical theory I discuss how to compute the exponentially small probability of a jump from one metastable state to another. This is expressed as a path integral that can be evaluated by saddle-point methods in mean-field models, leading to a boundary value problem. The resulting dynamical equations are solved numerically by means of a Newton-Krylov algorithm in the paradigmatic spherical …
Target search by active agents in rugged energy landscapes has remained a challenge because standard enhanced sampling methods do not apply to irreversible dynamics. We overcome this non-equilibrium rare-event problem by developing an algorithm generalizing transition-path sampling to active Brownian dynamics. This method is exemplified and benchmarked for a paradigmatic two-dimensional potential with a high barrier. We find that even in such a simple landscape the structure and kinetics of the ensemble of transition paths change drastically in the presence of activity. Indeed, active Brownian…
