In the context of unfitted finite element discretizations the realization of high order methods is challenging due to the fact that the geometry approximation has to be sufficiently accurate. Recently a new unfitted finite element method was introduced which achieves a high order approximation of the geometry for domains which are implicitly described by smooth level set functions. This method is based on a parametric mapping which transforms a piecewise planar interface (or surface) reconstruction to a high order approximation. In the paper [C. Lehrenfeld, A. Reusken, \emph{Analysis of a High Order Finite Element Method for Elliptic Interface Problems}, arXiv 1602.02970, Accepted for publication in IMA J. Numer. Anal.] an a priori error analysis of the method applied to an interface problem is presented. The analysis reveals optimal order discretization error bounds in the $H^1$-norm. In this paper we extend this analysis and derive optimal $L^2$-error bounds.
We propose a new discretization method for PDEs on moving domains in the setting of unfitted finite element methods, which is provably higher-order accurate in space and time. In the considered setting, the physical domain that evolves essentially arbitrarily through a time-independent computational background domain, is represented by a level set function. For the time discretization, the application of standard time stepping schemes that are based on finite difference approximations of the time derivative is not directly possible, as the degrees of freedom may get active or inactive across s…
We present an isoparametric unfitted finite element approach of the CutFEM or Nitsche-XFEM family for the simulation of two-phase Stokes problems with slip between phases. For the unfitted generalized Taylor--Hood finite element pair $\mathbf{P}_{k+1}-P_k$, $k\ge1$, we show an inf-sup stability property with a stability constant that is independent of the viscosity ratio, slip coefficient, position of the interface with respect to the background mesh and, of course, mesh size. In addition, we prove stability and optimal error estimates that follow from this inf-sup property. We provide numeric…
This paper proposes a deep unfitted Nitsche method for computing elliptic interface problems with high contrasts in high dimensions. To capture discontinuities of the solution caused by interfaces, we reformulate the problem as an energy minimization involving two weakly coupled components. This enables us to train two deep neural networks to represent two components of the solution in high-dimensional. The curse of dimensionality is alleviated by using the Monte-Carlo method to discretize the unfitted Nitsche energy function. We present several numerical examples to show the performance of th…
This paper presents a lowest-order immersed Raviart-Thomas mixed triangular finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems on unfitted meshes independent of the interface. In order to achieve the optimal convergence rates on unfitted meshes, an immersed finite element finite (IFE) is constructed by modifying the traditional Raviart-Thomas element. Some important properties are derived including the unisolvence of IFE basis functions, the optimal approximation capabilities of the IFE space and the corresponding commuting digram. Optimal error estimates are rigorously proved for t…
An arbitrarily high order unfitted finite element method for elliptic interface problems with automatic mesh generation, Part II. Piecewise-smooth interfaces
We design an adaptive unfitted finite element method on the Cartesian mesh with hanging nodes. We derive an hp-reliable and efficient residual type a posteriori error estimate on K-meshes. A key ingredient is a novel hp-domain inverse estimate which allows us to prove the stability of the finite element method under practical interface resolving mesh conditions and also prove the lower bound of the hp a posteriori error estimate. Numerical examples are included.
We propose a discontinuous Galerkin(DG) method to approximate the elliptic interface problem on unfitted mesh using a new approximation space. The approximation space is constructed by patch reconstruction with one degree of freedom per element. The optimal error estimates in both L2 norm and DG energy norm are obtained, without the typical constraints for DG method on how the interface intersects to the elements in the mesh. Other than enjoying the advantages of DG method, our method may achieve even better efficiency than the conforming finite element method, as illustrated by numerical exam…
We propose and analyze an unfitted finite element method for solving elliptic problems on domains with curved boundaries and interfaces. The approximation space on the whole domain is obtained by the direct extension of the finite element space defined on interior elements, in the sense that there is no degree of freedom locating in boundary/interface elements. The boundary/jump conditions are imposed in a weak sense in the scheme. The method is shown to be stable without any mesh adjustment or any special stabilization. Optimal convergence rates under the $L^2$ norm and the energy norm are de…
We study Hibridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations for a class of non-linear interior elliptic boundary value problems posed in curved domains where both the source term and the diffusion coefficient are non-linear. We consider the cases where the non-linear diffusion coefficient depends on the solution and on the gradient of the solution. To sidestep the need for curved elements, the discrete solution is computed on a polygonal subdomain that is not assumed to interpolate the true boundary, giving rise to an unfitted computational mesh. We show that, under mild assumptions on …
We present a priori and a posteriori error analysis of a high order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method applied to a semi-linear elliptic problem posed on a piecewise curved, non polygonal domain. We approximate $Ω$ by a polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and propose an HDG discretization, which is shown to be optimal under mild assumptions related to the non-linear source term and the distance between the boundaries of the polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and the true domain $Ω$. Moreover, a local non-linear post-processing of the scalar unknown is proposed and shown to provide an additional ord…
In this article, we develop and analyze a finite element method with the first family Nédélec elements of the lowest degree for solving a Maxwell interface problem modeled by a $\mathbf{H}(\text{curl})$-elliptic equation on unfitted meshes. To capture the jump conditions optimally, we construct and use $\mathbf{H}(\text{curl})$ immersed finite element (IFE) functions on interface elements while keep using the standard Nédélec functions on all the non-interface elements. We establish a few important properties for the IFE functions including the unisolvence according to the edge degrees of free…

Radial basis function generated finite difference (RBF-FD) methods for PDEs require a set of interpolation points which conform to the computational domain $Ω$. One of the requirements leading to approximation robustness is to place the interpolation points with a locally uniform distance around the boundary of $Ω$. However generating interpolation points with such properties is a cumbersome problem. Instead, the interpolation points can be extended over the boundary and as such completely decoupled from the shape of $Ω$. In this paper we present a modification to the least-squares RBF-FD meth…
We study the discretization of an elliptic partial differential equation, posed on a two- or three-dimensional domain with smooth boundary, endowed with a generalized Robin boundary condition which involves the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the boundary surface. The boundary is approximated with piecewise polynomial faces and we use isoparametric finite elements of arbitrary order for the discretization. We derive optimal-order error bounds for this non-conforming finite element method in both $L^2$- and $H^1$-norm. Numerical examples illustrate the theoretical results.
The weak maximum principle of the isoparametric finite element method is proved for the Poisson equation under the Dirichlet boundary condition in a (possibly concave) curvilinear polyhedral domain with edge openings smaller than $π$, which include smooth domains and smooth deformations of convex polyhedra. The proof relies on the analysis of a dual elliptic problem with a discontinuous coefficient matrix arising from the isoparametric finite elements. Therefore, the standard $H^2$ elliptic regularity which is required in the proof of the weak maximum principle in the literature does not hold …
This work introduces a novel, fully robust and highly-scalable, $h$-adaptive aggregated unfitted finite element method for large-scale interface elliptic problems. The new method is based on a recent distributed-memory implementation of the aggregated finite element method atop a highly-scalable Cartesian forest-of-trees mesh engine. It follows the classical approach of weakly coupling nonmatching discretisations at the interface to model internal discontinuities at the interface. We propose a natural extension of a single-domain parallel cell aggregation scheme to problems with a finite numbe…
In this work, we investigate the performance CutFEM as a high fidelity solver as well as we construct a competent and economical reduced order solver for PDE-constrained optimization problems in parametrized domains that live in a fixed background geometry and mesh. Its effectiveness and reliability will be assessed through its application for the numerical solution of quadratic optimization problems with elliptic equations as constraints, examining an archetypal case. The reduction strategy will be via Proper Orthogonal Decomposition of suitable FE snapshots, using an aggregated state and adj…

In this work, we analyse the links between ghost penalty stabilisation and aggregation-based discrete extension operators for the numerical approximation of elliptic partial differential equations on unfitted meshes. We explore the behavior of ghost penalty methods in the limit as the penalty parameter goes to infinity, which returns a strong version of these methods. We observe that these methods suffer locking in that limit. On the contrary, aggregated finite element spaces are locking-free because they can be expressed as an extension operator from well-posed to ill-posed degrees of freedom…
In this work, we bridge standard adaptive mesh refinement and coarsening on scalable octree background meshes and robust unfitted finite element formulations for the automatic and efficient solution of large-scale nonlinear solid mechanics problems posed on complex geometries, as an alternative to standard body-fitted formulations, unstructured mesh generation and graph partitioning strategies. We pay special attention to those aspects requiring a specialized treatment in the extension of the unfitted h-adaptive aggregated finite element method on parallel tree-based adaptive meshes, recently …
We explore a new way to handle flux boundary conditions imposed on level sets. The proposed approach is a diffuse interface version of the shifted boundary method (SBM) for continuous Galerkin discretizations of conservation laws in embedded domains. We impose the interface conditions weakly and approximate surface integrals by volume integrals. The discretized weak form of the governing equation has the structure of an immersed boundary finite element method. That is, integration is performed over a fixed fictitious domain. Source terms are included to account for interface conditions and ext…
We introduce an enriched unfitted finite element method to solve 1D elliptic interface problems with discontinuous solutions, including those having implicit or Robin-type interface jump conditions. We present a novel approach to construct a one-parameter family of discontinuous enrichment functions by finding an optimal order interpolating function to the discontinuous solutions. In the literature, an enrichment function is usually given beforehand, not related to the construction step of an interpolation operator. Furthermore, we recover the well-known continuous enrichment function when the…
In this paper we consider a class of unfitted finite element methods for scalar elliptic problems. These so-called CutFEM methods use standard finite element spaces on a fixed unfitted triangulation combined with the Nitsche technique and a ghost penalty stabilization. As a model problem we consider the application of such a method to the Poisson interface problem. We introduce and analyze a new class of preconditioners that is based on a subspace decomposition approach. The unfitted finite element space is split into two subspaces, where one subspace is the standard finite element space assoc…
