The paper studies a method for solving elliptic partial differential equations posed on hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N=2,3$. The method allows a surface to be given implicitly as a zero level of a level set function. A surface equation is extended to a narrow-band neighborhood of the surface. The resulting extended equation is a non-degenerate PDE and it is solved on a bulk mesh that is unaligned to the surface. An unfitted finite element method is used to discretize extended equations. Error estimates are proved for finite element solutions in the bulk domain and restricted to the surface. The analysis admits finite elements of a higher order and gives sufficient conditions for archiving the optimal convergence order in the energy norm. Several numerical examples illustrate the properties of the method.
We propose a new discretization method for PDEs on moving domains in the setting of unfitted finite element methods, which is provably higher-order accurate in space and time. In the considered setting, the physical domain that evolves essentially arbitrarily through a time-independent computational background domain, is represented by a level set function. For the time discretization, the application of standard time stepping schemes that are based on finite difference approximations of the time derivative is not directly possible, as the degrees of freedom may get active or inactive across s…
Radial basis function generated finite difference (RBF-FD) methods for PDEs require a set of interpolation points which conform to the computational domain $Ω$. One of the requirements leading to approximation robustness is to place the interpolation points with a locally uniform distance around the boundary of $Ω$. However generating interpolation points with such properties is a cumbersome problem. Instead, the interpolation points can be extended over the boundary and as such completely decoupled from the shape of $Ω$. In this paper we present a modification to the least-squares RBF-FD meth…

The thoracic diaphragm is the muscle that drives the respiratory cycle of a human being. Using a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) that models linear elasticity we compute displacements and stresses in a two-dimensional cross section of the diaphragm in its contracted state. The boundary data consists of a mix of displacement and traction conditions. If these are imposed as they are, and the conditions are not compatible, this leads to reduced smoothness of the solution. Therefore, the boundary data is first smoothed using the least-squares radial basis function generated finite …
Motivated by many applications in complex domains with boundaries exposed to large topological changes or deformations, fictitious domain methods regard the actual domain of interest as being embedded in a fixed Cartesian background. This is usually achieved via a geometric parameterization of its boundary via level-set functions. In this note, the a priori analysis of unfitted numerical schemes with cut elements is extended beyond the realm of linear problems. More precisely, we consider the discretization of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems of the form $- Δu +f_1(u)=f_2$ with poly…
This paper develops a unified general framework for designing convergent finite difference and discontinuous Galerkin methods for approximating viscosity and regular solutions of fully nonlinear second order PDEs. Unlike the well-known monotone (finite difference) framework, the proposed new framework allows for the use of narrow stencils and unstructured grids which makes it possible to construct high order methods. The general framework is based on the concepts of consistency and g-monotonicity which are both defined in terms of various numerical derivative operators. Specific methods that s…
The paper studies a geometrically unfitted finite element method (FEM), known as trace FEM or cut FEM, for the numerical solution of the Stokes system posed on a closed smooth surface. A trace FEM based on standard Taylor-Hood (continuous P2-P1) bulk elements is proposed. A so-called volume normal derivative stabilization, known from the literature on trace FEM, is an essential ingredient of this method. The key result proved in the paper is an inf-sup stability of the trace P2-P1 finite element pair, with the stability constant uniformly bounded with respect to the discretization parameter an…
We explore a new way to handle flux boundary conditions imposed on level sets. The proposed approach is a diffuse interface version of the shifted boundary method (SBM) for continuous Galerkin discretizations of conservation laws in embedded domains. We impose the interface conditions weakly and approximate surface integrals by volume integrals. The discretized weak form of the governing equation has the structure of an immersed boundary finite element method. That is, integration is performed over a fixed fictitious domain. Source terms are included to account for interface conditions and ext…
This paper studies a model of two-phase flow with an immersed material viscous interface and a finite element method for numerical solution of the resulting system of PDEs. The interaction between the bulk and surface media is characterized by no-penetration and slip with friction interface conditions. The system is shown to be dissipative and a model stationary problem is proved to be well-posed. The finite element method applied in this paper belongs to a family of unfitted discretizations. The performance of the method when model and discretization parameters vary is assessed. Moreover, an …
We propose a new unfitted finite element method for simulation of two-phase flows in presence of insoluble surfactant. The key features of the method are 1) discrete conservation of surfactant mass; 2) the possibility of having meshes that do not conform to the evolving interface separating the immiscible fluids; 3) accurate approximation of quantities with weak or strong discontinuities across evolving geometries such as the velocity field and the pressure. The new discretization of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations coupled to the convection-diffusion equation modeling the surfactan…

The discretization of surface intrinsic elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) poses interesting challenges not seen in flat space. The discretization of these PDEs typically proceeds by either parametrizing the surface, triangulating the surface, or embedding the surface in a higher dimensional flat space. The closest point method (CPM) is an embedding method that represents surfaces using a function that maps points in the embedding space to their closest points on the surface. In the CPM, this mapping also serves as an extension operator that brings surface intrinsic data onto the e…
