A search for exclusive or quasi-exclusive gamma gamma to W+W- production, via pp to p(*) W+W- p(*) to p(*) mu+/- e-/+ at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, is reported using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. Events are selected by requiring the presence of an electron-muon pair with large transverse momentum pt(mu+/- e-/+) > 30 GeV, and no associated charged particles detected from the same vertex. The 8 TeV results are combined with the previous 7 TeV results (obtained for 5.05 inverse femtobarns of data). In the signal region, 13 (2) events are observed over an expected background of 3.9 +/- 0.6 (0.84 +/-0.15) events for 8 (7) TeV, resulting in a combined excess of 3.4 standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. The observed yields and kinematic distributions are compatible with the standard model prediction for exclusive and quasi-exclusive gamma gamma to W+W- production. Upper limits on the anomalous quartic gauge coupling operators a[W;0,C] (dimension-6) and f[M0,1,2,3] (dimension-8), the most stringent to date, are derived from the measured dilepton transverse momentum spectrum.
A search for exclusive or quasi-exclusive W(+)W(-) production by photon-photon interactions, pp to p(*)W(+)W(-)p(*), at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is reported using data collected by the CMS detector with an integrated luminosity of 5.05 inverse femtobarns. Events are selected by requiring a mu(+/-)e(-/+) vertex with no additional associated charged tracks and dilepton transverse momentum pt(mu(+/-)e(-/+)) > 30 GeV. Two events passing all selection requirements are observed in the data, compared to a standard model expectation of 2.2 +/- 0.4 signal events with 0.84 +/- 0.15 background. The tail of the di…
We present a search for anomalous components of the quartic gauge boson coupling WWγγ in events with an electron, a positron and missing transverse energy. The analyzed data correspond to 9.7 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The presence of anomalous quartic gauge couplings would manifest itself as an excess of boosted WW events. No such excess is found in the data, and we set the most stringent limits to date on the anomalous coupling parameters a_0^W and a_C^W. When a form factor with Lambda_cutoff = 0.5 TeV is used, the o…
We report new results from CDF on single-diffractive dijet and W/Z production, and on exclusive dijet, diphoton, and dilepton production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured exclusive dijet and diphoton cross sections provide a test of theoretical predictions for exclusive Higgs production at the LHC.
This Letter reports evidence of triple gauge boson production $pp\to W(\ellν)γγ+ X$, which is accessible for the first time with the 8 TeV LHC data set. The fiducial cross section for this process is measured in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the ATLAS detector in 2012. Events are selected using the $W$ boson decay to $eν$ or $μν$ as well as requiring two isolated photons. The measured cross section is used to set limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in the high diphoton mass region.
Results from studies on exclusive production of electron-position pair, di-photon, and di-jet production at CDF in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron are presented. The first observation and cross section measurements of exclusive e+e- and di-jet production in hadron-hadron collisions are emphasized.
Measurements are presented of W gamma gamma and Z gamma gamma production in proton-proton collisions. Fiducial cross sections are reported based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Signal is identified through the W to l nu and Z to ll decay modes, where l is a muon or an electron. The production of W gamma gamma and Z gamma gamma, measured with significances of 2.6 and 5.9 standard deviations, respectively, is consistent with standard model predictions. In addition, limits on…

In CDF we have observed several exclusive processes: 2-photon --> e+e- and --> mu+mu-, photon+pomeron --> J/psi and psi(2S), and pomeron+pomeron --> chi_c. The cross sections agree with QED, HERA photoproduction data, and theoretical estimates of gg --> chi_c with another gluon exchanged to screen the color. This observation of exclusive chi_c, together with earlier observations of exclusive dijets and exclusive 2-photon candidates, support some theoretical predictions for p+p --> p+H+p at the LHC. Exclusive dileptons offer the best means of precisely calibrating forward proton spectrometers.
A search for exclusive or semi-exclusive photon pair production, pp to p(*) + photon pair + p(*) (where p(*) stands for a diffractively-dissociated proton), and the observation of exclusive and semi-exclusive electron pair production, pp to p(*) + ee + p(*), in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, are presented. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at low instantaneous luminosities. Candidate photon pair or electron pair events are selected by requiring the presence of two phot…
We present evidence for diffractive exclusive dijet production with an invariant dijet mass greater than 100 GeV in data collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A discriminant based on calorimeter information is used to measure a significant number of events with little energy (typically less than 10 GeV) outside the dijet system, consistent with the diffractive exclusive dijet production topology. The probability for these events to be explained by other dijet production processes is $2 \times 10^{-5}$, corresponding to a 4.1 standard deviation significance.
We present the first observation and cross section measurement of exclusive dijet production in pbar-p interactions, pbar + p --> pbar + dijet + p. Using a data sample of 310 pb-1 collected by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, exclusive cross sections for events with two jets of transverse energy ET >= 10 GeV have been measured as a function of minimum ET(jet). The exclusive signal is extracted from fits to data distributions based on Monte Carlo simulations of expected dijet signal and background shapes. The simulated background distribution shapes are checked in a…
The Collider Detector at Fermilab, CDF, observed for the first time in hadron-hadron collisions photon-photon to e+e- and mu+mu-, photon-pomeron to J/psi and psi(2S), and pomeron-pomeron to photon+photon and to chi_c. Exclusive pi+pi- production by double pomeron exchange was also measured at p+pbar CM energies 900 GeV and 1960 GeV, showing f0 and f2 resonance structures.
We present a search for exclusive Z boson production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, using the CDF II detector at Fermilab. We observe no exclusive Z->ll candidates and place the first upper limit on the exclusive Z cross section in hadron collisions, sigma(exclu) < 0.96 pb at 95% confidence level. In addition, we observe eight candidate exclusive dilepton events from the quantum electrodynamic process ppbar->gammagamma->p+ll+pbar, and measure the cross section for M(ll) > 40 GeV/c2 and |eta(l)| < 4 to be sigma = 0.24^{+0.13}_{-0.10} pb, which is the first measurement fo…
A measurement is presented of the cross section for electroweak production of a Z boson and a photon in association with two jets (Z$γ$jj) in proton-proton collisions. The Z boson candidates are selected through their decay into a pair of electrons or muons. The process of interest, electroweak Z$γ$jj production, is isolated by selecting events with a large dijet mass and a large pseudorapidity gap between the two jets. The measurement is based on data collected at the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The observed significance …

The measurement is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 450 inverse microbarns collected at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The dipion cross section, measured for single-pion transverse momentum pt >0.2 GeV and rapidity…
The LHCb collaboration has measured central exclusive production of $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and $Υ$ mesons as well as $J/ψJ/ψ$, $J/ψψ(2S)$, $ψ(2S)ψ(2S)$, and $χ_cχ_c$ meson pairs in proton-proton collisions. The analyses of $Υ$ and charmonium pairs are performed at the centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, and those of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ are done at 7 TeV and 13 TeV. The analysis at 13 TeV involves the use of new shower counters. These allow a reduction in the background by vetoing events with activity in an extended region in rapidity. The measurements of central exclusive production at LHCb are…
The cross section for W or Z boson production in association with two photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The W $\to$ $\ellν$ and Z $\to$ $\ell\ell$ decay modes (where $\ell =$ e, $μ$) are used to extract the W$γγ$ and Z$γγ$ cross sections in a phase space defined by electron (muon) with transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV and photon transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV. All leptons and photons are required to have absolute pse…
Measuring the shape of the Higgs boson potential is of paramount importance and will be a challenging task at current as well as future colliders. While the expectations for the measurement of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling are rather promising, an accurate measurement of the quartic self-coupling interaction is presently considered extremely challenging even at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. In this work we explore the sensitivity that a muon collider with a center of mass energy in the multi-TeV range, and luminosities of the order of 10^35cm^-2s^-1, as presently under discussio…

The $WWγ$ production cross-section is determined using a final state containing an electron, a muon, a photon, and neutrinos ($eνμνγ$). Searches for exclusively produced $W$ boson pairs in the process $pp(γγ) \rightarrow pW^+W^-p$ and exclusively produced Higgs boson in the process $pp(gg) \rightarrow pHp$ have been performed using $e^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ final states. These measurements use 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV at the LHC. Exclusive production of $W^+W^-$ consistent with the Standard Model prediction is found with 3.0$σ$ significance. The exclusive $W^+W^-$ production cross-section is determined to be $σ(γγ\rightarrow W^{+}W^{-}\rightarrow e^{…

The data used in the analysis correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns collected by the CMS experiment in sqrt(s) = 8 TeV proton-proton collisions produced at the LHC. Candidate events are selected with exactly one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum, one photon, and two jets with large rapidity separation. An excess over the hypothesis of the standard model without electroweak production of W gamma with two jets is observed with a sign…

The data was recorded by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $32.6$ nb$^{-1}$. The differential cross-section for $Υ$(n) states (n=1,2,3), has been measured as a function of transverse momentum squared $p_{T}^{2}$, and rapidity $y$. The $Υ$(1S) photoproduction cross-section is extracted in the region $|y|<2.2$ as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energies $W_{γp}$, …

We measure the Lambda_b^0 lifetime in the fully reconstructed decay Lambda_b^0 -> J/psi Lambda^0 using 10.4 fb^-1 of ppbar collisions collected with the D0 detector at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The lifetime of the topologically similar decay channel B^0 -> J/psi K^0_S is also measured. We obtain tau(Lambda_b^0) = 1.303 +- 0.075 (stat.) +- 0.035 (syst.) ps and tau(B^0) = 1.508 +- 0.025 (stat.) +- 0.043 (syst.) ps. Using these measurements, we determine the lifetime ratio of tau(Lambda_b^0)/tau(B^0) = 0.864 +- 0.052 (stat.) +- 0.033 (syst.).
A measurement of the exclusive two-photon production of muon pairs in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV, pp to p mu^+ mu^- p, is reported using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 40 inverse picobarns. For muon pairs with invariant mass greater than 11.5 GeV, transverse momentum pT(mu) > 4 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta(mu)| < 2.1, a fit to the dimuon pt(mu^+ mu^-) distribution results in a measured cross section of sigma(pp to p mu^+ mu^- p) = 3.38 [+0.58 -0.55] (stat.) +/- 0.16 (syst.) +/- 0.14 (lumi.) pb, consistent with the theoretical prediction evaluated with the even…
We report the results on the search for exclusive production of $W$ pairs in the LHC with data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. The analysis comprises the two-photon production of a $W$ pairs, ${pp\to p\,W^{+}W^{-}\,p\to p\,νe^{\pm}νμ^{\mp}\,p}$. Two events are observed in data for $p_{\textrm{\footnotesize T}}(\ell)>$ 4 GeV, $|η(\ell)|<$ 2.4 and $m(μ^{\pm}e^{\mp})>$ 20 GeV, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 2.2 $\pm$ 0.4 signal events with 0.84 $\pm$ 0.15 background events. Moreover, a study of the tail of the …
Rapidity distributions are presented for events containing either a Z boson or a photon with a single jet in proton-proton collisions produced at the CERN LHC. The data, collected with the CMS detector at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns. The individual rapidity distributions of the boson and the jet are consistent within 5% with expectations from perturbative QCD. However, QCD predictions for the sum and the difference in rapidities of the two final-state objects show discrepancies with CMS data. In particular, next-to-leading-order QCD calcula…
We study the indirect constraints on the quartic Higgs self-coupling that arise from double-Higgs production at future hadron colliders. To this purpose, we calculate the two-loop contributions to the $gg \to hh$ amplitudes that involve a modified $h^4$ vertex. Based on our results, we estimate the reach of a $pp$ collider operating at $27 \, {\rm TeV}$ and $100 \, {\rm TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy in constraining the cubic and quartic Higgs self-couplings by measurements of double-Higgs and triple-Higgs production in gluon-fusion.
Central exclusive and semiexclusive production of $π^+π^-$ pairs is measured with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV. The theoretical description of these nonperturbative processes, which have not yet been measured in detail at the LHC, poses a significant challenge to models. The two pions are measured and identified in the CMS silicon tracker based on specific energy loss, whereas the absence of other particles is ensured by calorimeter information. The total and differential cross sections of exclusive and semiexclusive cent…

The measurement is performed using the $Υ$(nS) $\to μ^+μ^-$ decay mode, with data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 32.6 nb$^{-1}$. Differential cross sections as functions of the $Υ$(nS) transverse momentum squared $p_\mathrm{T}^2$, and rapidity $y$, are presented. The $Υ$(1S) photoproduction cross section is extracted in…

For the electron or muon pairs satisfying exclusive selection criteria, a fit to the dilepton acoplanarity distribution is used to extract the fiducial cross-sections. The cross-section in the electron channel is determined to be $σ_{γγ\rightarrow e^+e^-}^{\mathrm{excl.}} = 0.428 \pm 0.035 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.018 (\mathrm{syst.})$ pb f…

Inclusive diffractive cross sections are discussed and compared to models, while searches and measurements…
A search for exclusive two-photon production via photon exchange in proton-proton collisions, pp $\to$ p$γγ$p with intact protons, is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2016 using the CMS and TOTEM detectors at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Events are selected with a diphoton invariant mass above 350 GeV and with both protons intact in the final state, to reduce backgrounds from strong interactions. The events of interest are those where the invariant mass and rapidity calculated from the momentum losses of the forward-movin…
Experimental results from the CDF experiment at the Tevatron in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV are presented on the diffractive structure function at different values of the exchanged momentum transfer squared in the range $0<Q^2<10,000$ GeV$^2$, on the four-momentum transfer $|t|$ distribution in the region $0<|t|<1$ GeV$^2$ for both soft and hard diffractive events up to $Q^2\approx 4,500$ GeV$^2$, and on the first experimental evidence of exclusive production in both dijet and diphoton events. A novel technique to align the Roman Pot detectors is also presented.
Gluon-gluon to photon-photon scattering $gg \to γγ$ offers to the LHC experiments a uniquely powerful probe of dimension-8 operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) that are quadratic in both the electromagnetic and gluonic field-strength tensors, such as would appear in the Born-Infeld extension of the Standard Model (SM). We use 13-TeV ATLAS data on the production of isolated photon pairs to set lower limits on the scales of dimension-8 operators $M \gtrsim 1$~TeV, and discuss the prospective sensitivities of possible future hadron colliders.
Photon induced processes can be used as a sensitive probe of new physics searches and can be studied using exclusive processes. These processes lead to unprecedented sensitivities on quartic anomalous couplings between photons and W and Z bosons, and new physics searches. By tagging the leading proton from the hard interaction, the Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) provides an increased sensitivity to select exclusive processes. PPS is designed to operate in standard high-luminosity runs at the LHC to perform measurements of e.g. the quartic gauge couplings and search for rare exclusive proc…
We have observed the reactions p+pbar --> p+X+pbar, with X being a centrally produced J/psi, psi(2S) or chi_c0, and gamma+gamma --> mu+mu-, in proton- antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The event signature requires two oppositely charged muons, each with pseudorapidity |eta| < 0.6, with M(mumu) in [3.0,4.0] GeV/c2, and either no other particles, or one additional photon, detected. The J/psi and the psi(2S) are prominent, on a continuum consistent with the QED process gamma+gamma --> mu+mu-. Events with a J/psi and an associated photon ca…
Quartic gauge couplings are tested by this study of the production of $WWγ$ and $WZγ$ events in 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The final state of $WWγ$ events containing an electron, a muon and a photon is analysed as well as the final states of $WWγ$ and $WZγ$ production containing an electron or a muon, two jets and a photon. For all final states two different fiducial regions are defined: one yielding the best sensitivity to the production cross-section of the process and one optimised…
Exclusive W$^{+}$W$^{-}$ pair production in photon-photon collisions during the pp runs at 7 and 8 TeV are observed and used to put constraints on the Anomalous Quartic Gauge Couplings. During the proton lead collisions in photon-induced vector meson production is observed via the decay of upsilon into two muons. The slope of the squared p$_{\rm T}$ distribution is measured to determine the size of the production region.
Exclusive dilepton production occurs with high cross section in gamma-mediated processes at the LHC. The pure QED process $γγ\rightarrow\ell^+\ell^-$ provides the conditions to study particle production with masses at the electroweak scale. By tagging the leading proton from the hard interaction, the Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) provides an increased sensitivity to selecting exclusive processes. PPS is a detector system to add tracking and timing information at approximately 210~m from the interaction point around the CMS detector. It is designed to operate at high luminosity with up to…
A complete list of operators contributing at the lowest order to Quartic Neutral Gauge Boson Couplings involving photons and Z-bosons, is presented. We show that, for the couplings we consider, the lowest order contribution is from dimension 8 operators in the case when a light Higgs is present and from dimension 6 operators in the higgsless case where electroweak symmetry is non-linearly realized. We also show that these operators are generated by exchange of the Kaluza-Klein partners of the graviton in extra-dimensional models. We then explore the possibility of probing these couplings in th…
Recent results on diffractive dijet and vector boson production and exclusive dijet production from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment are presented.
The exclusive gamma-met signal has a small standard model cross-section and is thus a good channel in which to look for signs of new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the CDF detector at the Tevatron, using 87 pb^-1 of data at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale |F|^{1/2} in supersymmetry models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, limits on the fundamental mass scale M_D of 549, 581, and 602 GeV, respectively, are fo…
The ALICE Collaboration has measured the energy dependence of exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ vector mesons off proton targets in ultra-peripheral p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. The e$^+$e$^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ decay channels are used to measure the cross section as a function of the rapidity of the $J/ψ$ in the range $-2.5 < y < 2.7$, corresponding to an energy in the $γ$p centre-of-mass in the interval $40 < W_{γ\mathrm{p}}<550$ GeV. The measurements, which are consistent with a power law dependence of the exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduc…
