Frequencies of the three quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) modes observed simultaneously in the accreting black hole GRO J1655-40 are compared with the predictions of models. Models in which all three QPO signals are produced at the same radius are considered: these include different versions of relativistic precession, epicyclic resonance, tidal disruption, and warped disc models. Models that were originally proposed to interpret only the twin high-frequency QPOs are generalized here to interpret also the low-frequency QPO in terms of relativistic nodal precession. Inferred values of the black hole mass and spin from each QPO model are compared with the mass measured from optical observations and the spin inferred from X-ray spectroscopy techniques. We find that along with the relativistic precession model predicting $M=(5.3\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.286\pm0.004$, the so-called total precession model ($M=(5.5\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.276\pm0.003$), and the resonance epicyclic model with beat frequency ($M=(5.1\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.274\pm0.003$) also satisfy the optical mass test. We compare our results with those inferred from X-ray spectral measurements.
Twin kilo-Hertz Quasi-periodic oscillation with ratio 3/2 has been found in some compact sources, which is believed to be related with their innermost regions of accretion disks, and hence carrying information of gravity in strong regime. However, more complicated phenomena have been revealed, e.g., the twin kilo-Hertz Quasi-periodic oscillation of 4U 1820-20 start increasing at certain spectral state and then saturate upon reaching certain level. Moreover, such quasi-periodic oscillation is not uniform and has multiple peaks, which displays random feature. This letter suggests that these chal…
We study the Rossby wave instability model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) of microquasars. We show ray-traced light curves of QPO within this model and discuss perspectives of distinguishing alternative QPO models with the future Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT) observations.
A model of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) is proposed based on the perturbed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of accretion disk. It turns out that the LFQPOs frequencies of some BHXBs can be fitted by the frequencies of the toroidal Alfvén wave oscillation corresponding to the maximal radiation flux. In addition, the positive correlation of the LFQPO frequencies with the radiation flux from accretion disk is well interpreted.
While nobody would deny the presence of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in the power density spectrum of Black hole binaries nor their importance in the understanding of the mechanisms powering the X-ray emissions, the possible impact on the time-averaged disk energy spectrum from the phenomenon responsible for the Quasi-Periodic Oscillations is largely ignored in models of sources emission. Here we investigate the potential impact of such structure on the resultant energy spectrum. Using data from the well documented outbursts of XTE J$1550$-$564$ we looked at possible hints that the presence of …
Context. One of the often discussed models for X-ray binaries high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations is the oscillating torus model that considers oscillation modes of slender accretion tori. Aims. Here, we aim at developing this model by considering the observable signature of an optically thick slender accretion torus subject to simple periodic deformations. Methods. We compute light curves and power spectra of a slender accretion torus subject to simple periodic deformations: vertical or radial translation, rotation, expansion and shear. Results. We show that different types of deformat…
We present a detailed study of the X-ray energy and power spectral properties of the neutron star transient IGR J17191-2821. We discovered four instances of pairs of simultaneous kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). The frequency difference between these kHz QPOs is between 315 Hz and 362 Hz. We also report on the detection of five thermonuclear type-I X-ray bursts and the discovery of burst oscillations at ~294 Hz during three of them. Finally, we report on a faint and short outburst precursor, which occurred about two months before the main outburst. Our results on the broadband…
Systematically studying all the RXTE/PCA observations for GRS 1915+105 before November 2010, we have discovered three additional patterns in the relation between Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) frequency and photon energy, extending earlier outcomes reported by Qu et al. (2010). We have confirmed that as QPO frequency increases, the relation evolves from the negative correlation to positive one. The newly discovered patterns provide new constraints on the QPO models.
We report the discovery in the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer data of GRS 1915+105 of a second quasi-periodic oscillation at 34 Hz, simultaneous with that observed at 68 Hz in the same observation. The data corresponded to those observations from 2003 where the 68-Hz oscillation was very strong. The significance of the detection is 4.2 sigma. These observations correspond to a very specific position in the colour-colour diagram for GRS 1915+105, corresponding to a harder spectrum compared to those where a 41 Hz oscillation was discovered. We discuss the possible implications of the new pair of fr…
We reviewed multi-wavelength blazars variability and detection of quasi-periodic oscillations on intra-day timescales. The variability timescale from few minutes to up to less than a days is commonly known as intra-day variability. These fast variations are extremely useful to constrain the size of emitting region, black hole mass estimation, etc. It is noticed that in general blazars show intra-day variability in the complete electromagnetic spectrum. But some class of blazars either do not show or show very little intra-day variability in a specific band of electromagnetic spectrum. Blazars …
The study of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux observed in the stellar-mass black hole (BH) binaries or quasars can provide a powerful tool for testing the phenomena occurring in strong gravity regime. We thus fit the data of QPOs observed in the well known quasars as well as microquasars in the framework of the model of geodesic oscillations of Keplerian disks modified for the epicyclic oscillations of spinning test particles orbiting Kerr BHs. We show that the modified geodesic models of QPOs can explain the observational fixed data from the quasars and microquasars but no…
We discuss further observational support of an idea formulated a decade ago by Abramowicz, Klu{ź}niak, McClintock and Remillard. They demonstrated that the 3:2 pairs of frequencies of the twin-peak black hole (BH) high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) scale inversely with the BH masses and that the scaling covers the entire range from stellar to supermassive BHs. For this reason, they believed that the QPOs may be used for accurate measurements of masses and spins of BHs.
In light of the relativistic precession model, we present here detailed analyses, extending the ones performed in the Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. We consider the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations in the Hartle-Thorne spacetime, which describes the gravitational field of a rotating and deformed object. We derive the analytic formulas for the epicyclic frequencies in the Hartel-Thorne spacetime and by means of these frequencies we interpret the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations of low-mass X-ray binaries of the atoll and Z - sources, on the basis of the relativistic precession mod…
Evidence for the presence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the optical polarization of the blazar PKS 2155-304, during a period of enhanced gamma-ray brightness, is presented. The periodogram of the polarized flux revealed the existence of a prominent peak at $T\sim 13$ min, detected at >99.7% significance, and $T\sim 30$ min, which was nominally significant at >99%. This is the first evidence of QPOs in the polarization of an active galactic nucleus, potentially opening up a new avenue of studying this phenomenon.
Exchange of dominance between twin kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in some low-mass-X-ray-binaries (LMXB) suggests the possibility of a resonance between two oscillatory modes. We study the behaviour of the effective gravitational potential around specific resonant radii, and estimate the role of the higher-order terms governing the non-linear, anharmonic forcing. We discuss the impact it has on the mode amplitude in the linear and non--linear regimes. We also discuss a related possibility of lowering of the neutron star mass estimates from the highest observed QPO frequencies.
Extremely peculiar emission lines have been found in the spectra of some active galactic nuclei and quasars. Their origin is totally unknown. We investigate the hypothesis that they are generated from ultra-rapid quasi-periodic oscillations that may occur in jets or black holes, as predicted in a published theoretical paper. We conclude that, although not totally certain, this hypothesis is just as valid as the other highly peculiar hypotheses that have been previously made (e.g. blueshifts due to bulk motions close to the speed of light). We consider ways to further validate our hypothesis.
We investigate the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations of low-mass X-ray binaries within the Hartle-Thorne spacetime. On the basis the relativistic precession model we extract the total mass $M$, angular momentum $J$, and quadrupole moment $Q$ of a compact object in a low-mass X-ray binary by analyzing the data of the Z -source GX 5-1. In view of the recent neutron star model we compute the radius, angular velocity and other parameters of this source by imposing the observational and theoretical constraints on the mass-radius relation.
We report the discovery of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the power spectrum of the X-ray nova MAXI J1535-571 at the initial stage of its outburst in September 2017. Based on data from the SWIFT and INTEGRAL instruments, we have traced the evolution of the QPO parameters (primarily their frequency) with time and their correlation with changes in the X-ray spectrum of the source (changes in the emission flux and hardness). We place constraints on the theoretical QPO generation models.
We report a possible detection of an ~4.6-hour quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the 0.3-10 keV emission of the high-energy peaked blazar PKS 2155-304 from a 64 ks observation by the XMM-Newton EPIC/pn detector. We identify a total modulation of ~5% in the light curve and confirm that nominal period by periodogram, structure function and wavelet analyses. The limited light curve duration allows the capture of only 3.8 cycles of this oscillation and thus precludes a very strong claim for this QPO, despite a nominally high (>3 sigma) statistical significance. We briefly discuss models capable …
Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) have been routinely observed in black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs). These LFQPOs can be explained by axisymmetric shock oscillation in accretion flow around a rotating black hole. We address the physical origin of Type-C LFQPOs in BHXRBs observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite considering a minimum number of free parameters, namely, specific energy and specific angular momentum of the infalling matter for a given set of BH mass and spin parameter. We apply the solution for a large number of BH candidates to further strengthen the…
Highly precise pulsar timing is very important for understanding the nature of neutron stars and the implied physics, even being used to detect directly gravitational waves. Unfortunately, the accuracy of the pulsar timing is seriously affected by the spin-down irregularities, such as spin fluctuations with a manifestation of low frequency structures (the so-called red noise processes), and various activities of magnetospheres. Except from the random timing noise, significant periodic or quasi-periodic components could also be found in some timing residuals of pulsars, indicating the presence …
We consider twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations observed in the accreting low-mass neutron star binaries and explore restrictions to central compact object properties that are implied by various QPO models. For each model and each source, the consideration results in a specific relation between the compact object mass $M$ and the angular-momentum $j$ rather than in their single preferred combination. Moreover, restrictions on the models resulting from observations of the low-frequency sources are weaker than those in the case of the high-frequency sources.
We suggest a possible explanation for the high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in black hole low mass X-ray binaries. By solving the perturbation general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic equations, we find two stable modes of the Alfven wave in the the accretion disks with toroidal magnetic fields. We suggest that these two modes may lead to the double high frequency QPOs if they are produced in the transition region between the inner advection dominated accretion flow and the outer thin disk. This model naturally accounts for the 3 : 2 relation for the upper and lower frequencies…
H1743-322 is one of the few black hole candidates (BHCs) in low-mass X-ray binaries that shows mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that are not associated with the more common type A, B and C oscillations seen in the X-ray light curves of typical BHCs systems. To better understand the physical origin of the mHz oscillations, we carried out a phase-resolved spectroscopic study of two RXTE observations of this source. As previously reported, the averaged energy spectra of H1743-322 shows a strong iron line at $\sim6.5$ keV. Here we found evidence that the line flux appears to be modulated at …
Three of the averaged light curves from the X-ray spectrum of 4U 1728-34 contain triads of quasi-periodic oscillations: two kHz, an upper and a lower one, and one low-frequency. In the present work, with the assumption that the triads occur simultaneously and with the application of the relativistic precession model the mass and the spin of the neutron star in the atoll source 4U 1728-34 is obtained. The consistency of the three independent estimates of the mass and the spin is also tested. According to the obtained results, the studied neutron star has relatively high mass and moderate spin.
We report the discovery of a 1mHz optical quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the candidate ultracompact low-mass X-ray binary 4U 0614+091. The ultra-low frequency QPO has no X-ray counterpart in contemporaneous RXTE/PCA data and is likely a signature of structure in the accretion disk. The QPO can be reasonably fitted with a single sine wave but with a phase jump part way through the observation, indicating that it is not coherent. We also identify a 48 min modulation, approximately consistent with the suggested orbital period of O'Brien (2005) and Shahbaz et al. (2008). If this is indeed orbi…
Variability is a typical observation feature of Fermi blazars, sometimes it shows quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO). In this work, we obtained 5-day binned light curves (with a time coverage of $\sim$ 12.9 yr) for S5 1044+71 based on Fermi LAT data, adopted five different methods: Date-compensated Discrete Fourier Transform (DCDFT), Jurkevich (JV), Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP), a Fortran 90 program (REDFIT) and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) to the $γ$-ray light curve, and found a possible QPO of 3.06 $\pm$ 0.43 yr at the significance level of $\sim3.6σ$. A binary black hole model inc…
The multi-resonance orbital model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) enables precise determination of the black hole dimensionless spin a if observed set of oscillations demonstrates three (or more) commensurable frequencies. The black hole spin is related to the frequency ratio only, while its mass M is related to the frequency magnitude. The model is applied to the triple frequency set of HF QPOs observed in Sgr A* source with frequency ratio 3:2:1. Acceptable versions of the multi-resonance model are determined by the restrictions on the Sgr A* supermassive black hole m…
We present phase-resolved spectroscopies based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) for millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in 4U 1636-536. This ~8 mHz QPO can be detected approximately several thousand seconds before a type-I X-ray burst. It was interpreted as marginally stable burning on the neutron-star surface. In this study, we used HHT to analyze the data collected by XMM-Newton between 2007 and 2009. HHT is a powerful tool that enables us to obtain instantaneous frequency, amplitude and phase of non-stationary periodicity phenomena, such as QPOs. With well-defined phases, the …
The data for BL Lac object S5 0716+714 optical B, R and I bands are collected from November 10, 2017 to May 15, 2018. The raw data consists of 21396 quasi-simultaneous multi-band points, with 7132 data points for each band. To search for the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) signal of S5 0716+714, the Lomb Scargle periodogram (LSP) method and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) method are used, and the light curve simulation method is utilized to estimate the significance level of the QPO. For the first time, a QPO with 43-day (> 95% confidence level) of approximate moon-like oscillations is…
Since 2016 October, the active galaxy PKS 2247-131 has undergone a gamma-ray outburst, which we studied using data obtained with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The emission arises from a relativistic jet in PKS 2247-131, as an optical spectrum only shows a few weak absorption lines, typical of the BL Lacertae sub-class of the blazar class of active galactic nuclei. Here we report a ~34.5 day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the emission after the initial flux peak of the outburst. Compared to one-year time-scale QPOs, previously identified in blazars in Fermi energies, PKS 2247-131 ex…
I present recent results studying flare emission in magnetars. Strong quasi-periodic oscillations observed in the tail of giant magnetar flares are frequently interpreted as evidence for global seismic oscillations. I demonstrate that such a global oscillation is not directly observable in the lightcurve. New work suggests the amplitude for the strongest QPO stays nearly constant in the rotation phases where it is observed, which I argue suggests it is produced by an additional emission process from the star.
We withdraw our claim that a component in an XMM-Newton satellite light curve of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716 + 714 shows quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of $\sim$30 minutes. Although both our original periodogram and wavelet analyses gave consistent results, the data do not lead to a statistically significant result once red-noise at low frequencies is properly taken into account for periodogram analyses.
Fast time variability is the most prominent characteristic of accreting systems and the presence of quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) is a constant in all accreting systems, from cataclysmic variables to AGNs, passing through black hole and neutron star X-ray binaries and through the enigmatic ultra-luminous X-ray sources. In this paper I will briefly review the current knowledge of QPOs in black hole X-ray binaries, mainly focussing on their observed properties, but also mentioning the most important models that have been proposed to explain the origin of QPOs over the last decades.
In this paper, the time series analysis method CLEANest is employed to search for characteristic periodicities in the radio light curves of the blazar NRAO 530 at 4.8, 8.0 and 14.5 GHz over a time baseline of three decades. Two prominent periodicities on time scales of about 6.3 and 9.5 yr are identified at all three frequencies, in agreement with previous results derived from different numerical techniques, confirming the multiplicity of the periodicities in NRAO 530. In addition to these two significant periods, there is also evidence of shorter-timescale periodicities of about 5.0 yr, 4.2 y…
The OVRO 40-m telescope has been monitoring the 15 GHz radio flux density of over 1200 blazars since 2008. The 15 GHz light curve of the flat spectrum radio quasar J1359+4011 shows a strong and persistent quasi-periodic oscillation. The time-scale of the oscillation varies between 120 and 150 days over a $\sim4$ year time span. We interpret this as the active galactic nucleus mass-scaled analog of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations from Galactic microquasars, or as evidence of modulation of the accretion flow by thermal instabilites in the "inner" accretion disc.
In order to search for the evidence of quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in blazar, multicolor optical observations of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 were performed from 2005 to 2012. For $I$ band on March 19 2010 with low variability amplitude and low flux level, the same quasi-periodic oscillation $\simeq50$ minutes with 99% significance levels is confirmed by ZDCF method, Lomb-Scargle method, REDFIT and fitting sinusoidal curves. The observed QPO is likely to be explained by accretion disk variability. If the observed QPO indicates an innermost stable orbital period from the accretion di…
We analyze the properties of the circular orbits for massive particles in the equatorial plane of symmetric rotating Ellis wormholes. In particular, we obtain the orbital frequencies and the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies, and consider their lowest parametric, forced and Keplerian resonances. These show that quasi-periodic oscillations in accretion disks around symmetric rotating Ellis wormholes have many distinct properties as compared to quasi-periodic oscillations in accretion disks around rotating Teo wormholes and the Kerr black hole. Still we can distinguish some common featur…
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) discovered in soft-gamma repeaters (SGRs) are expected to help us to study the properties of matter in neutron stars. In earlier investigations, we identified the QPOs of frequencies below $\sim100$ Hz observed in giant flares of SGR 1806$-$20 and SGR 1900+14 as the crustal torsional oscillations. For this purpose, we calculated the frequencies of the fundamental torsional oscillations with various angular indices $\ell$, by changing the stellar mass and radius. In this work, we try to explain the additional QPO frequencies recently reported by Huppenkothen e…
GRB 211211A was accompanied by a kilonova, implying a merger origin for the event. A precursor flare, modulated by quasi-periodic oscillations at $\approx 22\, \mbox{Hz}$, was also seen $\approx 1\, \mbox{s}$ prior to the main emission. It is suggested here that the precursor resulted from the resonant shattering of one star's crust prior to coalescence. Seismic aftershocks and low-frequency torsional modes may emanate from the rupture site in this case, explaining the underlying oscillations. This interpretation is directly analogous to proposals for giant flares from soft gamma repeaters, wh…
There have been many efforts to explain the dynamical mechanisms behind the phenomenology of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) seen in the X-ray light curves of low-mass X-ray binaries. Up to now, none of the models can successfully explain all the frequencies observed in the power density spectrum of the light curve. Here we perform several hydrodynamic simulations of non-self-gravitating relativistic axisymmetric thick tori applied to the neutron star in the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 and show how the observed oscillation modes triggered by different velocity perturbations give rise t…
Based on previous studies of quasi-periodic oscillations in neutron star LMXBs, mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) are believed to be related to `marginally stable' burning on the neutron star (NS) surface. Our study of phase resolved energy spectra of these oscillations in 4U 1636-53 shows that the oscillations are not caused by variations in the blackbody temperature of the neutron star, but reveals a correlation between the change of the count rate during the mHz QPO pulse and the spatial extend of a region emitting blackbody emission. The maximum size of the emission area $R^2_{\mathrm{…
Observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396 is believed to demonstrate a drift of the central period of the Quasi Periodic Oscillation (QPO) linearly correlated with the temporary X-ray luminosity. We show, using a specific scenario of the oscillation mechanism in black hole accretion disc, that modeling such correlated trends puts very strong constraints on the nature of this oscillation and the characteristic features of the hot flow in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In our model, QPO oscillations are due to the oscillations of the shock formed in the low angular momentum hot accr…
Quasi-periodic oscillations, often present in the power density spectrum of accretion disk around black holes, are useful probes for the understanding of gravitational interaction in the near-horizon regime of black holes. Since the presence of an extra spatial dimension modifies the near horizon geometry of black holes, it is expected that the study of these quasi-periodic oscillations may shed some light on the possible existence of these extra dimensions. Intriguingly, most of the extra dimensional models, which are of significant interest to the scientific community, predicts the existence…
We perform an observational test of no-hair theorem using quasi-periodic oscillations within the relativistic precession model. Two well motivated metrics we apply are Kerr-Q and Hartle-Thorne metrics in which the quadrupole is the parameter that possibly encodes deviations from the Kerr black hole. The expressions for the quasi-periodic frequencies are derived before comparing the models with the observation. We encounter a degeneracy in constraining spin and quadrupole parameters that makes it difficult to measure their values. In particular, we here propose a novel test of no-hair theorem b…
We report transient quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) on minute timescales in relativistic, radiative models of the galactic center source Sgr A*. The QPOs result from nonaxisymmetric $m=1$ structure in the accretion flow excited by MHD turbulence. Near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray power spectra show significant peaks at frequencies comparable to the orbital frequency at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) $f_o$. The excess power is associated with inward propagating magnetic filaments inside the ISCO. The amplitudes of the QPOs are sensitive to the electron distribution function. We argue…
