The study of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux observed in the stellar-mass black hole (BH) binaries or quasars can provide a powerful tool for testing the phenomena occurring in strong gravity regime. We thus fit the data of QPOs observed in the well known quasars as well as microquasars in the framework of the model of geodesic oscillations of Keplerian disks modified for the epicyclic oscillations of spinning test particles orbiting Kerr BHs. We show that the modified geodesic models of QPOs can explain the observational fixed data from the quasars and microquasars but not for all sources. We perform a successful fitting of the high frequency QPOs models of epicyclic resonance and its variants, relativistic precession and its variants, tidal disruption, as well as warped disc models, and discuss the corresponding constraints of parameters of the model, which are the spin $S$ of the test particle, mass $M$ and spin $a$ of the BH.
The study of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux observed in the stellar-mass black hole binaries can provide a powerful tool for testing of the phenomena occurring in strong gravity regime. The high frequency (HF) QPOs usually come in pairs of double peaks which have a frequency ratio close to $3:2$. In addition to HF QPOs, some sources display simultaneous existence of the low frequency (LF) QPOs in Fourier power spectra. We demonstrate that the explanation of these phenomena can be well related to the epicyclic oscillations of charged particles in accretion disks orbiting Kerr …
We have previously applied several models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) to estimate the spin of the central Kerr black hole in the three Galactic microquasars, GRS 1915+105, GRO J1655-40, and XTE J1550-564. Here we explore the alternative possibility that the central compact body is a super-spinning object (or a naked singularity) with the external space-time described by Kerr geometry with a dimensionless spin parameter a = cJ/GM2 > 1.We calculate the relevant spin intervals for a subset of HF QPO models considered in the previous study. Our analysis indicates that f…
In our previous work (Paper I) we applied several models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) to estimate the spin of the central compact object in three Galactic microquasars assuming the possibility that the central compact body is a super-spinning object (or a naked singularity) with external spacetime described by Kerr geometry with a dimensionless spin parameter $a\equiv cJ/GM^2>1$. Here we extend our consideration, and in a consistent way investigate implications of a set of ten resonance models so far discussed only in the context of $a<1$. The same physical arguments…
Estimations of black hole spin in the three Galactic microquasars GRS 1915+105, GRO J1655-40, and XTE J1550-564 have been carried out based on spectral and timing X-ray measurements and various theoretical concepts. Among others, a non-linear resonance between axisymmetric epicyclic oscillation modes of an accretion disc around a Kerr black hole has been considered as a model for the observed high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs). Estimates of spin predicted by this model have been derived based on the geodesic approximation of the accreted fluid motion. Here we assume accretion…
We explore the influence of non-geodesic pressure forces that are present in an accretion disk on the frequencies of its axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric epicyclic oscillation modes. {We discuss its implications for models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that have been observed in the X-ray flux of accreting black holes (BHs) in the three Galactic microquasars, GRS 1915+105, GRO J1655$-$40 and XTE J1550$-$564. We focus on previously considered QPO models that deal with low azimuthal number epicyclic modes, $\lvert m \rvert \leq 2$, and outline the consequences for the est…
Spectral fitting of the spin a in the microquasar GRS 1915+105 estimate values higher than a=0.98. However, there are certain doubts about this (nearly) extremal number. Confirming a high value of a>0.9 would have significant concequences for the theory of high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs). Here we discuss its possible implications assuming several commonly used orbital models of 3:2 HF QPOs. We show that the estimate of a>0.9 is almost inconsistent with two hot-spot (relativistic precession and tidal disruption) models and the warped disc resonance model. In contrast, we dem…
The high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) that appear in the X-ray fluxes of low-mass X-ray binaries remain an unexplained phenomenon. Among other ideas, it has been suggested that a non-linear resonance between two oscillation modes in an accretion disc orbiting either a black hole or a neutron star plays a role in exciting the observed modulation. Several possible resonances have been discussed. A particular model assumes resonances in which the disc-oscillation modes have the eigenfrequencies equal to the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies of geodesic orbital motion. T…

A model for 3:2 high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) with 3:2 pairs observed in four black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) is proposed by invoking the epicyclic resonances with the magnetic connection (MC) between a spinning black hole (BH) with a relativistic accretion disc. It turns out that the MC can be worked out due to Poynting-Robertson cosmic battery (PRCB), and the 3:2 HFQPO pairs associated with the steep power-law states can be fitted in this model. Furthermore, the severe damping problem in the epicyclic resonance model can be overcome by transferring energy from the BH …
Measurements of black hole spin made using the continuum-fitting method rely on the assumption that the inclination of the black hole's spin axis to our line of sight is the same as the orbital inclination angle of the host binary system. The X=ray and radio jet data available for the microquasar XTE J1550-564 offer a rare opportunity to test this assumption. Following the work of others, we have modeled these data and thereby determined the inclination angle of the jet axis, which is presumed to be aligned with the black hole's spin axis. We find a jet inclination angle of approximately 71 de…
Estimates of the black hole mass $M$ and dimensionless spin $a$ in the microquasar GRO J1655-40 implied by strong gravity effects related to the timing and spectral measurements are controversial, if the mass restriction determined by the dynamics related to independent optical measurements, $M_{\rm opt}=(5.4\pm0.3) M_{\odot}$, are applied. The timing measurements of twin high-frequency (HF) quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequency ratio $3:2$ and the simultaneously observed low-frequency (LF) QPO imply the spin in the range $a\in(0.27-0.29)$ if models based on the frequencies of the g…
We review the spectral properties of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1. Specifically, we discuss two recent sets of multi-satellite observations. One comprises a 0.5-500 keV spectrum, obtained with every flying X-ray satellite at that time, that is among the hardest Cyg X-1 spectra observed to date. The second set is comprised of 0.5-40 keV Chandra-HETG plus RXTE-PCA spectra from a radio-quiet, spectrally soft state. We first discuss the "messy astrophysics" often neglected in the study of Cyg X-1, i.e., ionized absorption from the wind of the secondary and the foreground dust scattering hal…
The black hole mass and spin estimates assuming various specific models of the 3:2 high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) have been carried out in Torok et al. (2005, 2011). Here we briefly summarize some current points. Spectral fitting of the spin a=cJ/GM^2 in the microquasar GRS 1915+105 reveals that this system can contain a near extreme rotating black hole (e.g., McClintock et al. 2011). Confirming the high value of the spin would have significant consequences for the theory of the HF QPOs. The estimate of a>0.9 is almost inconsistent with the relativistic precession (RP), t…
Small oscillations of current-carrying string loops around stable equilibrium positions corresponding to minima of the effective potential in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black holes are studied using the perturbation method. In the lowest approximation, two uncoupled harmonic oscillators are obtained that govern the radial and vertical oscillations; the higher-order terms determine non-linear phenomena and transition to chaotic motion through quasi-periodic stages of the oscillatory motion. The radial profiles of frequencies of the radial and vertical harmonic oscillations that are releva…
Analytical studies have raised the concern that a mysterious expulsion of magnetic field lines by a rapidly-spinning black hole (dubbed the black hole Meissner effect) would shut down the Blandford-Znajek process and quench the jets of active galactic nuclei and microquasars. This effect is however not seen observationally or in numerical simulations. Previous attempts at reconciling the predictions with observations have proposed several mechanisms to evade the Meissner effect. In this paper, we identify a new evasion mechanism and discuss its observational significance. Specifically, we show…
We perform detailed variability analysis of two-dimensional viscous, radiation hydrodynamic numerical simulations of Shakura-Sunyaev thin disks around a stellar mass black hole. Disk models are initialized on both the gas-, as well as radiation-, pressure-dominated branches of the thermal equilibrium curve, with mass accretion rates spanning the range from $\dot{M} = 0.01 L_\mathrm{Edd}/c^2$ to $10 L_\mathrm{Edd}/c^2$. An analysis of temporal variations of the numerically simulated disk reveals multiple robust, coherent oscillations. Considering the local mass flux variability, we find an osci…
We apply epicyclic resonances to the magnetic connection (MC) of a black hole (BH) with a relativistic accretion disc, interpreting the high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) with 3:2 pairs observed in three BH X-ray binaries. It turns out that the 3:2 HFQPO pairs are associated with the steep power-law states, and the severe damping can be overcome by transferring energy and angular momentum from a spinning BH to the inner disc in the MC process.
High frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) appear in the X-ray variability of several accreting low-mass binaries. In a series of works it was suggested that these QPOs may have connection to inhomogeneities orbiting close to an inner edge of the accretion disc. In this paper we explore the appearance of an observable signal generated by small radiating circular hot spots moving along quasi-elliptic trajectories close to the innermost stable circular orbit in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our consideration takes into account the capabilities of observatories that have been operating i…
Light bosonic fields are ubiquitous in extensions of the Standard Model. Even when minimally coupled to gravity, these fields might evade the assumptions of the black-hole no-hair theorems and give rise to spinning black holes which can be drastically different from the Kerr metric. Furthermore, they allow for self-gravitating compact solitons, known as (scalar or Proca) boson stars. The quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the X-ray flux emitted by accreting compact objects carry information about the strong-field region, thus providing a powerful tool to constrain deviations from K…
Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we have measured a trigonometric parallax for the micro quasar GRS 1915+105, which contains a black hole and a K-giant companion. This yields a direct distance estimate of 8.6 (+2.0,-1.6) kpc and a revised estimate for the mass of the black hole of 12.4 (+2.0,-1.8) Msun. GRS 1915+105 is at about the same distance as some HII regions and water masers associated with high-mass star formation in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Galaxy. The absolute proper motion of GRS 1915+105 is -3.19 +/- 0.03 mas/y and -6.24 +/- 0.05 mas/y toward the east and north, respect…
Following the previous research on epicyclic oscillations of accretion disks around black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs), a new model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) has been proposed (CT model), which deals with oscillations of fluid in marginally overflowing accretion tori (i.e., tori terminated by cusps). According to preliminary investigations, the model provides better fits of the NS QPO data compared to the relativistic precession (RP) model. It also implies a significantly higher upper limit on the Galactic microquasars BH spin. A short analytic formula has bee…
High frequency (millisecond) quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) are observed in the X-ray power-density spectra of several microquasars and low mass X-ray binaries. Two distinct QPO peaks, so-called twin peak QPOs, are often detected simultaneously exhibiting their frequency ratio close or equal to 3/2. Following the analytic theory and previous studies of observable spectral signatures, we aim to model the twin peak QPOs as a spectral imprint of specific dual oscillation regime defined by a combination of the lowest radial and vertical oscillation mode of optically thick slender tori with …

Black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) display a wide range of variability phenomena, from long duration spectral state changes to short-term broadband variability and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). A particularly puzzling aspect is the production of QPOs, which -- if properly understood -- could be used as a powerful diagnostic tool of black hole accretion and evolution. In this work we analyse a high resolution three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a geometrically thin accretion disk which is tilted by $65^{\circ}$ with respect to the black hole spin axis.…
In this paper, we study the motion of test particles around two exact charged black-hole solutions in Einstein-Æther theory. Specifically, we first consider the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and their resonances generated by the particle moving in the Einstein-Æther black hole and then turn to study the periodic orbits of the massive particles. For QPOs, we drop the usually adopted assumptions $ν_U=ν_θ$, $ν_L=ν_r$, and $ν_U/ν_L=3/2$ with $ν_U$ ($ν_L$) and $ν_r$ ($ν_θ$) being the upper (lower) frequency of QPOs and radial (vertical) epicyclic frequency of the orbiting particles, respective…
