All static and electrically charged solutions with Einstein base manifold in the arbitrary-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell system with a massless scalar field
We present a simple and complete classification of static solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell system with a massless scalar field in arbitrary $n(\ge 3)$ dimensions. We consider spacetimes which correspond to a warped product $M^2 \times K^{n-2}$, where $K^{n-2}$ is a $(n-2)$-dimensional Einstein space. The scalar field is assumed to depend only on the radial coordinate and the electromagnetic field is purely electric. Suitable Ansätze enable us to integrate the field equations in a general form and express the solutions in terms of elementary functions. The classification with a non-constant real scalar field consists of nine solutions for $n\ge 4$ and three solutions for $n=3$. A complete geometric analysis of the solutions is presented and the global mass and electric charge are determined for asymptotically flat configurations. There are two remarkable features for the solutions with $n\ge 4$: (i) Unlike the case with a vanishing electromagnetic field or constant scalar field, asymptotically flat solution is not unique, and (ii) The solutions can asymptotically approach the Bertotti-Robinson spacetime depending on the integrations constants. In accordance with the no-hair theorem, none of the solutions are endowed of a Killing horizon.
A large family of new black hole solutions in 2+1-dimensional Einstein-Power-Maxwell (EPM) gravity with prescribed physical properties is derived. We show with particular examples that according to the power parameter k of the Maxwell field, the obtained solutions may be asymptotically flat for 1/2<k<1 or non-flat for k>1 in the vanishing cosmological constant limit. We study the thermodynamic properties of the solution with two different models and it is shown that thermodynamic quantities satisfy the first law. The behaviour of the heat capacity indicates that by employing the 1+1-dimensiona…
In this work we extend and generalize our previous work on the scale dependence at the level of the effective action of black holes in the presence of non-linear electrodynamics. In particular, we consider the Einstein-power-Maxwell theory without a cosmological constant in (2+1) dimensions, assuming a scale dependence of both the gravitational and the electromagnetic coupling and we investigate in detail how the scale--dependent scenario affects the horizon and thermodynamic properties of the classical black holes for any value of the power parameter. In addition, we solve the corresponding e…
In the present article we obtain, by separation of variables, an exact solution to the Dirac equation with anomalous momentum for an electrically neutral massless particle in a Bertotti-Robinson universe. We discuss the phenomenom of particle creation in this model.
In this work, we generalise the spontaneous scalarization phenomena in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar models to a higher spin field. The result is an Einstein-Maxwell-Vector model wherein a vector field is non-minimally coupled to the Maxwell invariant by an exponential coupling function. We show that the latter guarantees the circumvention of an associated no-hair theorem when the vector field has the form of an electric field. Different than its scalar counterpart, the new spontaneously vectorized Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes are, always, undercharged while being entropically preferable. The…
Recently M. Kamata and T. Koikawa claimed to obtain the charged version of the spinning BTZ black hole solution by assuming an (anti-) self dual condition imposed on the orthonormal basis components of the electric and magnetic fields. We point out that the Kamata-Koikawa field is not a solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations and we find the correct solution of the studied problem. It is shown that a duality mapping exists among spinning solutions obtained from electrostatic and magnetostatic fields with the help of the local transformation $t\longrightarrow t-ωθθ\longrightarrow θ-ωt.$
We present higher-dimensional generalizations of the Buchdahl and Janis-Robinson-Winicour transformations which generate static solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell system with a massless scalar field. While the former adds a nontrivial scalar field to a vacuum solution, the latter generates a charged solution from a neutral one with the same scalar field. Applying these transformations to (i) a static solution with an Einstein base manifold, (ii) a multi-center solution, and (iii) a four-dimensional cylindrically symmetric solution, we construct several new exact solutions.
In the present paper we construct a new solution to the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity equations describing electrically charged dilaton black holes immersed in a strong external magnetic field and we study its properties. The black holes described by the solution are rotating but with zero total angular momentum and possess an ergoregion confined in a neighborhood of the horizon. Our results also show that the external magnetic field does not affect the black hole thermodynamics.
We derive electrically charged black hole solutions of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations with a nonlinear electrodynamics source in $n (\ge 5)$ dimensions. The spacetimes are given as a warped product $M^2 \times K^{n-2}$, where $K^{n-2}$ is a $(n-2)$-dimensional constant curvature space. We establish a generalized Birkhoff's theorem by showing that it is the unique electrically charged solution with this isometry and for which the orbit of the warp factor on $K^{n-2}$ is non-null. An extension of the analysis for full Lovelock gravity is also achieved with a particular attention to the Cher…
Our research focus on gravitational collapse of electrically charged scalar field in dilaton gravity and in the presence of phantom coupling. We examine dynamical behaviour of the scalar field coupled to Maxwell field when gravitational interactions have form consistent with the low-energy limit of the string theory. Moreover, we allow the evolving fields to have negative sign in front of the respective kinetic term of the Lagrangian. The main aim of our studies is to investigate in what manner does the phantom nature of either Maxwell or dilaton fields (or both of them) affect the outcomes of…
We present a consistent way of coupling three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity theory with massless spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ gauge fields. We first introduce the simplest hyper-Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity containing two massless spin-2 fields coupled with a massless Majorana fermion of spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ and whose novel underlying superalgebra is explicitly constructed. Then, we present three alternative hypersymmetric extensions of the Maxwell algebra which are shown to emerge from the Inönü-Wigner contraction procedure of precise combinations of the $\mathfrak{osp}\left(1|4\right)$ and th…
We construct exact, time-dependent, black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with arbitrary dilaton coupling, $a$. For $a=1$ this theory arises as the four-dimensional low-energy effective description of heterotic string theory. These solutions represent electrically charged, spherically symmetric black holes emitting or absorbing charged null fluids and generalize the Vaidya and Bonnor-Vaidya solutions of general relativity and of Einstein-Maxwell theory, respectively. The $a=1$ case stands out as special, in the sense that it is the only choice of the coupling that allows for …
Based on the conformal energy theorem we prove the uniqueness theorem for static higher dimensional electrically and magnetically charged black holes being the solution of Einstein (n-2)-gauge forms equations of motion. Black hole spacetime contains an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and non-degenerate components of the event horizon.
In this paper we give an electrically charged traversable wormhole solution for the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory when the dilaton is a phantom field, i.e. it has flipped sign kinetic term appearing in the action. In the limit when the charge is zero, we recover the anti-Fisher solution, which can be reduced to the Bronnikov-Ellis solution under certain choices of integration constants. The equations of motion of this theory share the same S-duality invariance of string theory, so the electrically charged solution is rotated into the magnetically charged one by applying such transformations.…
In this work we investigate the presence of electrically charged structures that are localized in two and three spatial dimensions. We use the Maxwell-scalar Lagrangian to describe several systems with distinct interactions for the scalar fields. The procedure relies on finding first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion and ensure stability of the corresponding minimum energy solutions. We illustrate the many possibilities in two and in three spatial dimensions, examining different examples of electrically charged solutions that engender internal structure
Regular black hole solutions are found among the Guilfoyle exact solutions. These are spherically symmetric solutions of general relativity coupled to Maxwell's electromagnetism and charged matter where the metric potentials and electromagnetic fields are related in some particularly simple form. We show that, for certain ranges of the parameters, there are objects which correspond to regular charged black holes, whose interior region is filled by an electrically charged phantom-like fluid, or, in the limiting case, a de Sitter false vacuum fluid, and whose exterior region is Reissner-Nordströ…
Employing a pseudo-orthonormal coordinate-free approach we write down the Dirac equation in spacetimes with static generally prolate metrics. As examples, we consider the electrically charged C-metric, the vacuum C-metric, the Reissner-Nordstrom and Schwarszchild spacetimes and the BBMB black hole and show that the solutions to the Dirac equations for particles these spacetimes can be derived in terms of Heun's general functions and their confluent and double confluent forms.
We obtain static and rotating electrically charged black holes of a Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory of the Brans-Dicke type in (2+1)-dimensions. The theory is specified by three fields, the dilaton, the graviton and the electromagnetic field, and two parameters, the cosmological constant and the Brans-Dicke parameter. It contains eight different cases, of which one distinguishes as special cases, string theory, general relativity and a theory equivalent to four dimensional general relativity with one Killing vector. We find the ADM mass, angular momentum, electric charge and dilaton charge and…
I derive an exact, static, axially symmetric solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations representing two massless magnetic dipoles, and compare it with the corresponding solution of Einstein's equations for two massless spinning particles (see gr-qc/0201094). I then obtain an exact stationary solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations representing two massless spinning magnets in balance. The conclusion is that the spin-spin force is analogous to the force between two magnetic dipoles, but of opposite sign, and that the latter agrees with the classical value in the first approximation.
We calculated the dimensionless gyromagnetic ratio ("$g$-factor") of self-gravitating, uniformly rotating disks of dust with a constant specific charge $ε$. These disk solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations depend on $ε$ and a "relativity parameter" $γ$ ($0<γ\le 1$) up to a scaling parameter. Accordingly, the $g$-factor is a function $g=g(γ,ε)$. The Newtonian limit is characterized by $γ\ll 1$, whereas $γ\to 1$ leads to a black-hole limit. The $g$-factor, for all $ε$, approaches the values $g=1$ as $γ\to 0$ and $g=2$ as $γ\to 1$.

Along the last decades, several regular black hole (BH) solutions, i.e., singularity-free BHs, have been proposed and associated to nonlinear electrodynamics models minimally coupled to general relativity. Within this context, it is of interest to study how those nonlinear-electrodynamic-based regular BHs (RBHs) would interact with their astrophysical environment. We investigate the propagation of a massless test scalar field in the background of an electrically charged RBH solution, obtained by Eloy Ayón-Beato and Alberto García. Using a numerical approach, we compute the absorption cross sec…
We consider a self-consistent Einstein-Maxwell-Kalb-Ramond system in the bulk D=4 space-time interacting with a variable-tension electrically charged lightlike brane. The latter serves both as a material and charge source for gravity and electromagnetism, as well as it dynamically generates a bulk space varying cosmological constant. We find an asymmetric wormhole solution describing two "universes" with different spherically symmetric black-hole-type geometries connected through a "throat" occupied by the lightlike brane. The electrically neutral "left universe" comprises the exterior region …
We investigate the motion of electrically charged test particles in spacetimes with closed timelike curves, a subset of the black hole or wormhole Reissner-Nordström-NUT spacetimes without periodic identification of time. We show that, while in the wormhole case there are closed worldlines inside a potential well, the wordlines of initially distant charged observers moving under the action of the Lorentz force can never close or self-intersect. This means that for these observers causality is preserved, which is an instance of our weak chronology protection criterion.
The Einstein-Maxwell theory with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions is considered. It is shown that the Smarr relation for the electrically charged BTZ black hole emerges from two different approaches based on the scaling symmetry of the asymptotic behaviour of the fields at infinity. In the first approach, we prove that the conservation law associated to the scale invariance of the action for a class of stationary and circularly symmetric configurations, allows to obtain the Smarr formula as long as a special set of holographic boundary conditions is satisfied. This …
By means of a simple scaling transformation any asymptotically flat Papapetrou-Majumdar solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations corresponding to a localized regular distribution of electrically counterpoised dust can be reformulated as a one-parameter family of solutions admitting a black hole limit. In the limit, a characteristic separation of spacetimes occurs: From the exterior point of view, the extreme Reissner-Nordstrom metric outside the event horizon is formed. From the interior point of view, a regular, non-asymptotically flat (and in general non-spherically symmetric) spacetime wi…
The exact interior static solution of Einstein-Maxwell equations in Bondi's coordinates for the electrically charged fluid ball is obtained as a source of the Reissner-Nordström solution.

We numerically construct static and spherically symmetric electrically charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with massive dilaton. The numerical solutions show that the dilaton potential allows many more black hole causal structures than the massless dilaton. We find that depending on the black hole mass and charge and the dilaton mass the black holes can have either one, two, or three horizons. The extremal solutions are also found out. As an interesting peculiarity we note that there are extremal black holes with an inner horizon and with triply degenerated horizon.
We present a new asymptotically flat, doubly spinning black ring of D = 5 Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with Kaluza-Klein dilaton coupling. Besides the mass and two angular momenta, the solution displays both electric charge and (magnetic) dipole charge. The class of solutions that are free from conical singularities is described by four parameters. We first derive the solution in six dimensions employing the inverse scattering method, thereby generalising the inverse-scattering construction by two of the current authors of Emparan's singly spinning dipole black ring. The novel black ring it…
A vector model with a hybrid form of spacetime symmetry breaking consisting of explicit diffeomorphism breaking but spontaneous local Lorentz violation is presented. The combined effects of these symmetry breakings give rise to a theory obeying the Einstein-Maxwell equations in a preferred spatially homogeneous and isotropic frame, with photons emerging as massless Nambu-Goldstone modes. Interpretations and possible generalizations of this model are discussed, and comparisons are made to previous models describing photons as Nambu-Goldstone modes.
With motivation by holography, employing black hole entropy, two point connection function and entanglement entropy, we show that, for the higher dimensional Anti-de Sitter charged hairy black hole in the fixed charged ensemble, a Van der Waals-like phase transition can be observed. Furthermore, based on the Maxwell's equal area construction, we check numerically the equal area law for a first order phase transition in order to further characterize the Van der Waals-like phase transition.
A regular static, spherically symmetric electrically charged black hole solution of general relativity coupled to a new theory for nonlinear electrodynamics is presented. This theory has the interesting feature that, at far distances from the black hole, in the weak field limit, the theory reduces to Maxwell Lagrangian with Heisenberg-Euler correction term of quantum electrodynamics. The singular center of the black hole is replaced by flat, de Sitter, or anti de Sitter space, if the spacetime in which the black hole is embedded is asymptotically flat, de Sitter, or anti de Sitter, respectivel…
We present the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of a theory for spin 2 fields. The construction is developed in flat space-time. The construction in curved space-time is conceptually straightforward, although it is not unique. The theory is based on a symmetric tensor $S_{μν}$, contains two degrees of freedom of radiation, is motivated by the teleparallel formulation of general relativity, and displays a certain resemblance with Maxwell's theory for the electromagnetic field.
An electrically charged black hole solution with scalar hair in four dimensions is presented. The self-interacting scalar field is real and it is minimally coupled to gravity and electromagnetism. The event horizon is a surface of negative constant curvature and the asymptotic region is locally an AdS spacetime. The asymptotic fall-off of the fields is slower than the standard one. The scalar field is regular everywhere except at the origin, and is supported by the presence of electric charge which is bounded from above by the AdS radius. In turn, the presence of the real scalar field smooths …
We present some consequences of non-anomalous propagation requirements on various massless fields. Among the models of nonlinear electrodynamics we show that only Maxwell and Born-Infeld also obey duality invariance. Separately we show that, for actions depending only on the $F_\mn^2$ invariant, the permitted models have $L \sim \sqrt{1 + F^2}$. We also characterize acceptable vector-scalar systems. Finally we find that wide classes of gravity models share with Einstein the null nature of their characteristic surfaces.
We investigate the properties of non-rotating, electrically charged strange quark stars in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. For quark matter we adopt the well-motivated quantum chromodynamics (QCD) equation-of-state, while for the charge density we assume it is proportional to the mass density. The system of coupled structure equations are integrated numerically, and we compute the mass, the radius as well as the total electric charge of the stars. Moreover, we perform a detailed numerical study of the effect of electric charge using the interacting quark equation-of-state. We find th…
We construct higher-derivative gravities with a non-minimally coupled Maxwell field. The Lagrangian consists of polynomial invariants built from the Riemann tensor and the Maxwell field strength in such a way that the equations of motion are second order for both the metric and the Maxwell potential. We also generalize the construction to involve a generic non-minimally coupled $p$-form field strength. We then focus on one low-lying example in four dimensions and construct the exact magnetically-charged black holes. We also construct exact electrically-charged $z=2$ Lifshitz black holes. We ob…
We investigate the influence of vacuum polarization of quantum massive fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric black holes. We consider the evolution of a massless scalar field on the spacetime corresponding to a charged semiclassical black hole, consisting of the quantum corrected geometry of a Reissner-Nordström black hole dressed by a quantum massive scalar field in the large mass limit. Using a sixth order WKB approach we find the shift in the quasinormal mode frequencies due to vacuum polarization .
We outline a proof of the stability of a massless neutral scalar field $ψ$ in the background of a wide class of four dimensional asymptotically flat rotating and ``electrically charged'' solutions of supergravity, and the low energy limit of string theory, known as STU metrics. Despite their complexity, we find it possible to circumvent the difficulties presented by the existence of ergo-regions and the related phenomenon of super-radiance in the original metrics by following a strategy due to Whiting, and passing to an auxiliary metric admitting an everywhere lightlike Killing field and const…
The cosmic no hair conjecture is tested in the spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton~(EMD) system with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. Firstly, we analytically show that once gravitational collapse occurs in the massless dilaton case, the system of field equations breaks down inevitably in outer communicating regions or at the boundary provided that a future null infinity ${\cal I}^+$ exists. Next we find numerically the static black hole solutions in the massive dilaton case and investigate their properties for comparison with the massless case. It is shown that their Abbott-De…
Static spherically symmetric distributions of electrically counterpoised dust (ECD) are used to construct solutions to Einstein-Maxwell equations in Majumdar--Papapetrou formalism. Unexpected bifurcating behaviour of solutions with regard to source strength is found for localized, as well as for the delta-function ECD distributions. Unified treatment of general ECD distributions is accomplished and it is shown that for certain source strengths one class of regular solutions approaches Minkowski spacetime, while the other comes arbitrarily close to black hole solutions.
The electromagnetic (EM) perturbations of the black hole solutions in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) are studied for both electrically and magnetically charged black holes, assuming that the EM perturbations do not alter the spacetime geometry. It is shown that the effective potentials of the electrically and magnetically charged black holes related to test perturbative NED EM fields are related to the effective metric governing the photon motion, contrary to the effective potential of the linear electrodynamic (Maxwell) field that is related to the spacetime met…
In spinor formalism, since any massless free-field spinor with spin higher than $1/2$ can be constructed with spin-1/2 spinors (Dirac-Weyl spinors) and scalars, we introduce a map between Weyl fields and Dirac-Weyl fields. We determine the corresponding Dirac-Weyl spinors in a given empty spacetime. Regarding them as basic units, other higher spin massless free-field spinors are then identified. Along this way, we find some hidden fundamental features related to these fields. In particular, for non-twisting vacuum Petrov type N solutions, we show that all higher spin massless free-field spinor…
We propose a new propagation formula for the Maxwell field in de Sitter space which exploit the conformal invariance of this field together with a conformal gauge condition. This formula allows to determine the classical electromagnetic field in the de Sitter space from given currents and initial data. It only uses the Green's function of the massless Minkowskian scalar field. This leads to drastic simplifications in practical calculations. We apply this formula to the classical problem of the two charges of opposite signs at rest at the North and South Poles of the de Sitter space.
We construct a specific example of a class of traversable wormholes in Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell theory in four spacetime dimensions, without needing any form of exotic matter. Restricting to a model with two massive fermions in a singlet spinor state, we show the existence of spherically symmetric asymptotically flat configurations which are free of singularities, representing localized states. These solutions satisfy a generalized Smarr relation, being connected with the extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes. They also possess a finite mass $M$ and electric charge $Q_e$, with $Q_e/M>1$. An ex…
We discuss the zero mass pointlike solutions and charged Einstein-Rosen bridges (wormholes) that arise from the dyonic black hole solution of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. These massless black holes exist individually in spacetime, different from the known massless solutions, which come in pairs with opposite signs for their masses. In order to construct a massless object, we choose the integration constants of the solution to have specific values. The massless solutions present some problems: in one case the dilaton field is complex (or the gauge field has negative kinetic energy), and…
We investigate extremal electrically charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a cosmological constant inspired by string theory. These solutions are not static, and a timelike singularity eventually appears which is not surrounded by an event horizon. This suggests that cosmic censorship may be violated in this theory.
Dark matter and dark energy are dominating components of the Universe. Their presence affects the course and results of processes, which are driven by the gravitational interaction. The objective of the paper was to examine the influence of the dark sector on the gravitational collapse of an electrically charged scalar field. A phantom scalar field was used as a model of dark energy in the system. Dark matter was modeled by a complex scalar field with a quartic potential, charged under a U(1)-gauge field. The dark components were coupled to the electrically charged scalar field via the exponen…
By using conformal Killing-Yano tensors, and their generalisations, we obtain scalar potentials for both the source-free Maxwell and massless Dirac equations. For each of these equations we construct, from conformal Killing-Yano tensors, symmetry operators that map any solution to another.
This paper aims to investigate the astrophysical applicability of the electrically and magnetically charged black hole solutions obtained in a model of nonlinear electrodynamics proposed by Kruglov (Ann. Phys. Berlin 2017, 529, 170073). Theoretical calculations of the bending angles and gravitational redshifts from the theory of general relativity are studied numerically by using the stellar data of charged compact objects and a hypothetical quark star model. Calculations have revealed that although the theoretical outcomes differ from the linear Maxwell case, the plotted bending angles coinci…
The notion of a compact object immune to the horizon problem and comprising an anisotropic inhomogeneous fluid with a specific radial pressure behavior, i.e. the gravastar, is extended by introducing an electrically charged component. Einstein-Maxwell field equations are solved in the asymptotically de Sitter interior where a source of the electric field is coupled to the fluid energy density. Two different solutions which satisfy the dominant energy condition are given: one is the delta-shell model for which the analysis is carried out within Israel's thin shell formalism, the other approach …
Continuous sequences of asymptotically flat solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations describing regular equilibrium configurations of ordinary matter can reach a black hole limit. For a distant observer, the spacetime becomes more and more indistinguishable from the metric of an extreme Kerr-Newman black hole outside the horizon when approaching the limit. From an internal perspective, a still regular but non-asymptotically flat spacetime with the extreme Kerr-Newman near-horizon geometry at spatial infinity forms at the limit. Interesting special cases are sequences of Papapetrou-Majumdar …
We derive and study distorted, five-dimensional, electrically charged, non-extremal black holes on the example of a static and "axisymmetric" black hole distorted by external, electrically neutral matter. The solution satisfies Einstein-Maxwell equations which admits an $\mathbb{R}^1\times U(1)\times U(1)$ isometry group. The inner horizon remains regular if the distortion fields are finite and smooth at the outer horizon. There exists a certain duality transformation between the inner and the outer horizon surfaces which links surface gravity, electrostatic potential, and space-time curvature …
We study the system of self-dual Maxwell field coupled to 3D gravity with torsion, with Maxwell field modified by a topological mass term. General structure of the field equations reveals a new, dynamical role of the classical central charges, and gives a simple correspondence between self-dual solutions with torsion and their Riemannian counterparts. We construct two exact self-dual solutions, corresponding to the sectors with massless and massive Maxwell field, and calculate their conserved charges.
We employ the 'square root' of the Maxwell Lagrangian (i.e. \surd(F_{μν}F^{μν})), coupled with gravity to search for the possible linear potentials which are believed to play role in confinement. It is found that in the presence of magnetic charge no confining potential exists in such a model. Confining field solutions are found for radial geodesics in pure electrically charged Nariai- Bertotti-Robinson (NBR)-type spacetime with constant scalar curvature. Recently, Guendelman, Kaganovich, Nissimov and Pacheva, [Phys.Lett.B704(2011)230] have shown that superposed square root with standard Maxwe…
